28:1

Rabbi Natan would say: There is no love like the love of Torah. There is no wisdom like the wisdom of the “way of the world.” There is no beauty like the beauty of Jerusalem. There are no riches like the riches of Media. There is no power like the power of Persia. There is no promiscuity like the promiscuity of Arabs. There is no arrogance like the arrogance of Elam. There is no flattery like the flattery of Babylon, as it says (Zechariah 5:11), “And he said [to me] to build a house for it in the land of Shinar.” And there is no witchcraft like the witchcraft of Egypt.

28:2

Rabbi Shimon ben Elazar would say: When a sage lives in the Land of Israel and then leaves, his wisdom is impaired. (Whereas one who lives there is praised, and even if he is impaired, he is still praised above any sages who live in foreign lands.) They give a parable to explain what this can be compared to: When steel from Nadoi is imported across the sea, even if it diminishes in quality, it is still much better than any of the best metal in those countries [it is imported to].

28:3

Rabbi Shimon ben Gamliel would say: Anyone who brings peace into his own home is regarded by the Torah as if he had brought peace to everyone in Israel. And anyone who brings jealousy and competitiveness into his own home is regarded by the Torah as if he had brought jealousy and competition to Israel. For everyone is a king in his own home, as it says (Esther 1:22), “So that every man shall rule over his own home.”

28:4

Rabban Gamliel would say: The Cuthean Kingdom survives off of four things: taxes, bathhouses, theaters, and tithes.

28:5

He would also say: Words of Torah are as difficult to acquire (as wool garments), and as easy to lose as linen garments. Words of foolishness and nonsense are as easy to acquire and as difficult to lose as sackcloth. Sometimes a person buys sackcloth in the marketplace for a sela, and then uses it for four or five years. Rabbi Yehudah HaNasi would say: Anyone who indulges in the pleasures of this world prevents himself from experiencing the pleasures of the World to Come. And anyone who denies himself the pleasure of this world is given all the pleasures of the World to Come.

28:6

He would also say: Righteous people who suffer in this world – to what can they be compared? [They can be compared] to a chef who prepares a meal for himself. Even though he has gone to all the trouble, in the end he will be able to eat and others will not. But wicked people who suffer in this world – to what can they be compared? [They can be compared] to a chef who has prepared a meal for others. Even though he has gone to all the trouble, in the end it is others who will eat and not the chef.

28:7

He would also say: Let your secrets be revealed. But do not say to your friend that which should not be heard.

28:8

Hillel would say: Do not separate yourself from the community.

28:9

He would also say: The more one eats, the more one excretes. The more meat, the more worms and maggots. The more good deeds one does, the more peace one feels inside. Rabbi Elazar ben Shamua would say: There are three types of Torah scholars – the Hewn Stone, the Corner Stone, and the Polished Stone. The Hewn Stone – what is he like? This is a scholar who studies Midrash. When another scholar comes to him and asks him a question about the Midrash, he is able to answer. He is like a hewn stone, which has only one surface. The Corner Stone – what is he like? This is a scholar who studies Midrash and Halakhah. When one scholar comes and asks him a question about Midrash, he is able to answer. And when another scholar asks about Halakhah, he is able to answer. He is like a corner stone, which has only two surfaces. The Polished Stone – what is he like? This is a scholar who studies Midrash, Halakhah, Aggadah, and Tosefta. When one scholar comes and asks about Midrash, he is able to answer. And when another scholar asks about Halakhah, he is able to answer. And when another scholar asks about Tosefta, he is able to answer. And when another scholar asks about Aggadah, he is able to answer. He is like a polished stone, which has four surfaces, one on each of its four sides.

28:10

Rabbi Yehudah ben Ilai would say: Anyone who makes words of Torah primary and the way of the world secondary will be made primary in (this) world. Anyone who makes the way of the world primary and words of Torah secondary will be made secondary in (this) world. They give a parable to explain what this can be compared to: [It can be compared] to a troop that has to pass between two paths, one of fire and one of snow. If it goes too near the fire, it will be burned. If it goes too near the snow, it will be frozen. What should it do? It must go between them, and be careful not to be burned by the fire or frozen by the snow. (Rabbi Shimon ben Elazar would say: “Do not try to make your friend feel better when…”)
