[¶0] The loveliness of roses and lilies has blossomed,

[¶1] And in its clear waters the silvery brook

[¶2] Catches the gleam of her curls and brow,

[¶3] But the queen does not hear what the brook whispers,

[¶4] Nor does she glance at the flowers:

[¶5] Sorrow dims the light of her azure eyes,

[¶6] And her dream is full of grief.

[¶7] She sees: far away, in the northern land,

[¶8] Amid frosty mists and snowstorms,

[¶9] In solitary battle with the evil power of darkness,

[¶10] The friend she has abandoned is perishing.

[¶11] And she casts aside her diamond crown,

[¶12] Leaves her golden chamber

[¶13] And at her faithless friend’s, an unexpected visitor,

[¶14] Knocks with a hand full of grace.

[¶15] . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

> Russian: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

[¶16] And with eternal love in her azure eyes

[¶17] She says softly to her friend:

[¶18] “I know, your will is no steadier than the waves of the sea,

[¶19] You swore to remain faithful to me,

[¶20] You broke your vow, but by your betrayal

[¶21] Could you change my heart?”

[¶22] So, here love is mutual, and the ‘friend’ is under the ‘queen’s’ unsleeping, jealous, solicitous protection. Let us listen further to the confessions of 1884.

[¶23] Beneath the alien power of a sultry blizzard,

[¶24] Forgetting former visions,

[¶25] Once more, from my mysterious companion,

[¶26] I heard a fading call.

[¶27] And with a cry of horror and pain,

[¶28] An eagle caught in iron,

[¶29] My spirit trembled in captivity

[¶30] And tore the net and soared aloft...

[¶31] And here is an entry from 1886:

[¶32] What a heavy dream! In a crowd of silent visions,

[¶33] Pressing and hovering all around,

[¶34] In vain I seek that grace-giving shadow

[¶35] That touched me with its wing.

[¶36] But as soon as I yield to the onslaught of evil doubts,

[¶37] Gripped by dull anguish and horror,

[¶38] Again I sense above me the unseen shadow’s wing,

[¶39] Her words ring out as before.

[¶40] What a heavy dream! The crowd of silent visions

[¶41] Grows, grows and blocks the way,

[¶42] And the shadow’s distant voice is scarcely heard:

[¶43] Do not trust the fleeting; love and do not forget.

[¶44] And an even more significant entry from 1898:
