Hence there have arisen two cities, different from and opposed to one another ... because some live according to man, others according to God. B. Augustine, ibid.

Hinc extitisse duas civitates diversas inter se atque contrarias ... quond alii secundum hominem, alii secundum Deum vivant. B. Augustini, ibid.

This book brings together studies and essays written over the past few years and devoted to various questions of a philosophical, sociological, religious-historical and economic character. Yet for all this outward diversity of subjects, one thought, one intention unites them and forms the spiritual nerve of the whole book. This is the question of the true nature of the cultural and social ideal, of its ultimate foundation.

For me it is an axiom possessing apodictic certainty that the true foundation of social life must be seen in religion. Religion is a phenomenon of social life, the ‘base’ upon which the various ‘superstructures’ are erected. In this sense religion is the universal unifying principle, and man is a social being (Aristotle’s ζώον πολιτικόν) only in so far as he is a religious being. Although various causes or ‘factors’ of an elemental, impersonal kind operate in history, in the final reckoning they still serve only as passive material, which is overcome and given form by the human spirit, the active principle of history. It remains true that man makes his own history, although he makes it not out of nothing but out of inert and resistant material; and history is the arena in which spiritual forces act, the struggle of spiritual potentialities that mature and become clear in this struggle. This general understanding of the essence of history can remain valid even with a thoroughly realistic, indeed economic, interpretation of concrete history; for whatever layers of passive matter we uncover in our study, the sole active, genuinely creative principle remains the spirit, which makes its way through these obstacles, overcomes them and, in this victory, becomes conscious of itself and returns to itself. Only through misunderstanding or in utter blindness can one speak of an elemental, impersonal and therefore soulless and thing-like (or ‘natural’) course of history. Whatever is genuinely creative in history belongs, of course, to the human spirit in its living and therefore concrete self-determination; and the nature of spirit is freedom. History, in this sense, is humanity’s free deed, labour and feat. But in tracing human history back to this source, we thereby bring it back to the religious self-determination of the human spirit as the ultimate and deepest self-ground of spiritual being, which determines what each spirit is in a free act that, for this very reason, can no longer be explained causally. And just as freedom is an inalienable property of spirit, its nature, so religion, as the most fundamental exercise of this freedom, is the common possession of all human beings. Man is a religious being: there may be non-religious or even anti-religious people, but there are none who stand outside religion, by virtue of man’s metaphysical nature, his spirituality and freedom on the one hand, and his creaturely limitation on the other. If man were an absolute, self-sufficient being, as only the Godhead, the Creator and not the creature, can be conceived to be, he would then be above religion; if he were not conscious of his spirituality and freedom, and had no aspiration towards absolute being, he would be below religion. But given his actual condition, religiosity is a natural and even inevitable sense of himself. Religion, in its most literal and original meaning, is the sense of one’s bond with the whole, with the absolute, and of the necessity of this bond for the possibility of spiritual life, of spiritual self-preservation. Man cannot establish himself solely in and upon himself; such religious solipsism is impossible for him. He carries the centre of his existence beyond the bounds of his I, goes spiritually out of himself, regards himself only in relation to the whole, as a part of it, gives up his I in order to restore it in union with the whole, and in this sense makes himself a form that receives absolute content. Religions differ, but religiosity is universal. The opposite of religiosity is not atheism, or the denial of a personal God, but irreligiosity, or, more precisely, religious incapacity, when man sinks to a state in which the centre of his life really becomes his own I in its empirical shell, or the service of his instincts, in the absence of any enthusiasm for good or evil. From this point of view, even enthusiasm for evil, demonism, that is, religion turned inside out, constituting a hostile and conscious opposite to religion, is far removed from the state of irreligiosity, of spiritual hibernation. Spiritual philistinism, listless indifference, or the animal service of one’s lower instincts, in general the renunciation of one’s freedom and spirituality: this is what irreligiosity actually is, and every human being carries its possibility within the soul, regardless of his beliefs. It constantly draws him down, oppresses the life of the spirit, which is therefore attained only in a struggle full of victories and defeats. Here the power of the element of sin manifests itself, the weakness of the flesh against which the spirit keeps watch.

There are two fundamental paths of religious self-determination to which their various ramifications lead: theism, which finds its fulfilment in Christianity, and pantheism, which finds its fulfilment in the religion of man-godhood and anti-Christianity. The world, and man within it, passes through stages of existence outside God: not, of course, in the sense that it possesses independence of being and could exist for even a moment by its own power, apart from the will of the Almighty Creator, but in the sense that, in human consciousness, it has the freedom to establish itself in God and outside God. Pure self-godhood, the assertion of one’s own creatureliness as the absolute, is Satanism, a state not directly accessible to man. Man’s self-assertion outside God takes the form only of the conscious deification of the creature, of pantheism or cosmotheism, and is defined as atheism, or even anti-theism, anti-Christianity, only in opposition to theism. This pantheism can take various forms: the materialism of the Encyclopaedists, Haeckel’s hylozoism, the spiritualistic atheism of Hartmann and Schopenhauer, Marx’s economic materialism, the agnostic positivism of Kant and Spencer. In religious terms, however, all these varieties amount to one and the same content: pantheism and cosmotheism. But this all-godhood or world-godhood inevitably takes on the features of man-godhood in religious experience. Man is the glory of creation, its king and lord; humanity is the deity in which every individual human being comes to participate. And just as the world gave birth to man, so humanity is faced with the task of giving birth to the superman, to a god. But humanity exists only in persons, and all that is highest in man necessarily receives personal embodiment; hence, in its final expression, this task comes down to the aspiration to bring forth a single superman, a personal god, that is, the one who in Christianity is called the Antichrist. The developing potentiality, the inescapable task of man-godhood, is this individual man-god, in whom the whole of creation would find its apotheosis; Nietzsche elucidated this idea of the Antichrist-superman for modern humanity. The ultimate meaning of man-godhood amounts to appropriating God’s creation and declaring oneself its god. This is the path of Satan, who, having no power of being of his own, and in his falling away from God becoming a spirit of non-being, can manifest this power only through metaphysical theft, acquiring only a phantom, ‘meteoric’ existence (in Schelling’s expression) in oscillations between being and non-being; he exists only through a deception that will be exposed at the complete separation from being and non-being, from light and ‘outer darkness’, which lies beyond the edge (‘outside’) of being.

Although humanity, in taking the path of man-godhood, is likewise lured onto a false and ruinous path, it nevertheless falls into a self-deception that is to a certain extent natural and understandable. It is natural to fall into the deification of humanity because, even in fallen and sinful humanity, divine powers really do mature and manifest themselves, and history really is progress in their unfolding; hence the temptation to self-deification here has an objective basis, just as the possibility of natural pantheism rests on a genuine perception of nature’s mystical essence. The question is not whether history is a revelation of divine power in man, but whether it is merely a revelation about man or man’s self-revelation. Is it human self-creation, or do there merely unfold within it the powers implanted at man’s creation, the ‘image and likeness’, which in themselves already constitute an original given and merely pass in history from a potential, hidden state into an actual one? But in that case, by attributing history to himself in the ontological sense, man simply wishes to steal and appropriate what does not belong to him; the son turns into a rebellious slave. It is in this conjunction of the manifest divinity of the world and man with the self-legislation and independence of creation that there lies the possibility, and, if we take into account the reality of the evil principle and the universal inclination towards sin, also the inevitability, of the fundamental religious antinomy: self-determination towards God and against God, the paths of Christianity and man-godhood, of theism and pantheism. In the religious sense, no third possibility is given. And this duality determines the entire course of the development of Christian Europe (we leave non-Christian countries aside so as not to complicate the question), shines through all its culture and is reflected in the social ideals that possess minds and hearts.

The life of the world in its being outside God leads to the separation of these principles, which takes place in their struggle against one another. The world’s autonomy is redeemed only through tragedy, and therefore ‘the fundamental material of all life and being is the terrible’ (Schelling). The sense of the tragic is a constant feature of every profound religious and philosophical outlook. From it were born the mysteries of the ‘suffering god’ and the tragedies of the Greeks. The religion of the Cross proclaimed to us the world as the footstool of Golgotha. Modern philosophy, too, in the persons of Kant, Schelling and Schopenhauer, teaches ‘radical evil’. Friedrich Nietzsche, the herald of Dionysian frenzy and lamentation, proclaimed tragedy to the nineteenth century. And if history contains progress in true and higher humanity, it is the progress of tragedy, its inward maturation. A partial overcoming of tragedy is granted only to a spiritual feat, whether of prayer, morality or art, as a victory won with blood, wrested in struggle from hostile forces and defended against them; its cosmic overcoming, however, transcends natural life and will take place only on the new earth and beneath the new heaven, beyond the gates of personal and world death, in the beyond. Hence this struggle goes on in the life both of the individual person and of all humanity, ceaseless and unremitting; its heights are lit by bliss not of this world, but this is not what is usually called happiness and sometimes made the goal of history. Wherever, instead of overcoming tragedy, there is reconciliation with it, philistinism invariably reigns. The vulgar is the shadow of the tragic, a tragedy that failed to come into being and resolved itself into light comedy. Here lies Gogol’s horror before a life in which he saw Chichikovs and Khlestakovs, farce in place of tragedy. Here lies Herzen’s despondency when he read the ominous inscription on the brow of Western civilisation: philistinism. These are the colours that inevitably tinge depictions of ‘earthly paradise’ in the various social utopias. Only the religion of Redemption leads beyond this inescapable predicament of life through its promises, whose fulfilment is anticipated in the grace of the sacraments. But cosmotheism and man-godhood require tragedy to be overcome within history; otherwise the kingdom of this world will prove impossible to realise, and then the opening abyss of pessimism and despair threatens. Hence the characteristic optimism, the idyllic complacency, the belief in the possibility of humanity’s self-salvation and in the realisability of universal harmony on earth through progress. This optimism receives its classical expression in eighteenth-century doctrines of ‘natural man’, but it is invariably assumed, whether implicitly or openly, in nineteenth-century social doctrines as well, however pessimistic they may appear with regard to the present.

Humanity is moving towards the city to come. Its sacrificial path is drenched in sweat and blood and is wholly foreign to every idyll; hence the dream of the city likewise takes on a transcendent, religious character. And this is the shield that protects from religious death, from genuine irreligiosity, that part of humanity which mistook the mirage in the desert for the pillar of cloud and followed it. And this holy unrest of seeking, this unceasing call somewhere into the distance and the heights, this refusal to be reconciled to the present, is what is truly divine in man, something that can only be distorted by taking the wrong path, by directing one’s aspiration falsely. History is unremitting striving, eternal unrest, a path without an end. History cannot find its inward completion within history; ‘bad infinity’ is its nature. Only once in his life could Faust say to the moment: stay! But that was the moment of his death. The hand of the clock fell, time ended, contracting to a single point. And the whole positive outcome, the integral of his life, is summed up in the beyond, for which All that is transient Is but a likeness; What falls short Here becomes event. But if this unattainable (Unzulängliche), which can be attained, can become ‘Ereigniss’, only after the hand of the clock has fallen, that is, when ‘there shall be time no longer’, is declared attainable and already being attained within time, then the spiritual gaze is blinded by the mirage of the earthly city, enticing and tantalising, yet deceptive. The phantom does its work, for it drives us onwards, allowing no repose; but this phantom character penetrates the human soul as well and fatefully leads it onto the path of man-godhood. Humanity kisses its own wounds, worships its own sufferings, measures its arduous path, but already appropriates for itself all that has been accomplished, falls away from God and wishes to live ‘in its own name’. Throughout the whole of world history we can observe this spectacle. One after another these earthly ideals are created, the earthly city is built in thought, its plan and blueprint elaborated. In the ancient world this dream found its clearest expression in Plato’s Republic: he built the earthly city on the model of a pagan monastery and found in philosophical clericalism the key to its cherished doors. And the same dream, in the form of Jewish chiliasm, blinded the eyes of Jewry and prevented it from recognising the true Messiah in the King not of this world. It enters the Christian world first in the doctrine of papal hierocracy, from which the whole system of papism grew, culminating in the dogma of papal infallibility. It was given to Augustine to express with the power of genius the entire opposition between the two cities, only for him immediately to proclaim the earthly church the city already attained, the kingdom of God on earth. In this sense Augustinianism predetermined the development of the entire Middle Ages, indeed of all Catholicism as papism (of course, these concepts must in no way be equated, for ‘Catholicism’ is the Western part of the one universal Christian Church, whereas papism is its local deviation and new formation, which can also be considered entirely separately and in its own right). Throughout the Middle Ages the Roman Church asserted itself as the earthly city, an earthly theocracy, and only from this standpoint can both the theory of the two swords and all the claims of papism be understood. Through papism, through Jewish chiliasm, the dream of the earthly city was reborn in Western Christianity and became the cause of many of its misfortunes. This same poison also penetrates Orthodoxy in the doctrine of mystical autocracy, supposedly called upon to realise the earthly city. But in Orthodoxy this opinion never acquired the character of dogma, as it did in Catholicism, remaining at most a local or private opinion. For Orthodoxy, Caesaropapism is merely the fruit of abuse, a product of the sinful weakness of the members of the Church, of their acquiescence, but never a dogma. Orthodoxy has kept itself free of the admixture of Jewish chiliasm; it remains unbound to any definite ideal of the earthly city, and therefore, however much this may seem to contradict the existing historical state of affairs, Orthodoxy is also inwardly more independent, freer than papism, for it remains a kingdom not of this world. The Church is not a city. True, it exists in the city and, in so far as it comes to participate in it, is constantly exposed to the danger of worldliness and captivity, of ‘paralysis’; historical Caesaropapism also arises on this soil, but this is not its nature.

What papal Caesarism once was, socialism in its various forms has now become: a dream of the earthly city. Dostoevsky correctly discerned and noted this connection between papism and socialism as products of one and the same essence, which found its classical expression in Jewish chiliasm. The other variants of this dream of the earthly city also come down to it, and, in establishing themselves in it, they all fatefully assume a more or less anti-Christian character. It is precisely here that the mysterious boundary runs: between the kingdom of this world and the kingdom not of this world.

But does this not mean devaluing history, drowning the temporal in the abyss of eternity, depriving history of its religious numen? By no means. Christianity itself is a historical religion; the Incarnation of God took place in time, and for everything there is the fullness of time, ‘times and seasons’. By placing the outcome of history beyond the bounds of the temporal, it does not deprive this temporal process of its significance: it can neither be bypassed nor leapt over. Everything immanent is connected with the transcendent, is its symbol. History, this biography of all humanity, has absolute significance just as individual life does. And just as nature is a book of revelation, an unwritten Bible, so revelation takes place in history, religious experience is acquired, the world matures inwardly and, in the final reckoning, history borders upon the beyond. Hence, among other things, the earthly life of the Church also presupposes unceasingly unfolding revelation; in other words, dogmatic creativity cannot dry up, although it may temporarily be suspended or take on an elusive and indefinable character. Only someone who does not believe in the Church can deny this. Connected with this is also the question of Christian chiliasm (in its opposition to Jewish chiliasm), as an ideal projection of religious revelations in the fullness accessible within history. This is merely another formulation of the idea of religious revelation in history. But growth is possible only from soil that conditions the continuity and unity of growth; and to aspire towards the future, one must be firmly bound to the past, live by it, know it through experience. There must therefore be neither breaks nor revolutions in the life of the Church: it all grows upon a single vine. And those who speak of new religious creativity in a break with the Church leap into the void or else fatefully cut themselves off into sectarianism. What is said here will, of course, also be rejected by those who adhere to the old belief (in the broad sense), that is, those who deny the possibility of movement in the life of the Church and elevate immobility into dogma. Sometimes this springs from the very best intentions, as a protest against the rootlessness and frivolity of reformers who simply do not know and cannot value their bond with the Church. But if this immobility is elevated into dogma, it is already a manifest error. There has never been a dogmatic definition in the Church that there can be no new dogmas and that they are all exhausted by the definitions of the seven Ecumenical Councils. Such a profoundly unhistorical view can find no dogmatic foundation. The Church is life, creativity, an impetuous striving. The law of unceasing movement holds here more than anywhere else.

Thus a city really is being built in history, and this is what its positive content amounts to; but it is built in parts, and the whole cannot be contained in the consciousness of its builders. Moreover, the builders themselves come to their work only in turn, and death maintains the regularity of this succession. Death is therefore one of the fundamental preconditions of the historical process, and passing beyond the boundary of history is necessarily bound up with victory over death. All historical activity must be judged by a twofold criterion: in the light of temporal purposiveness, of pursuing history’s successive tasks, and in the light of religious consciousness, of the sense of eternity living in the soul. The resultant of history runs along a diagonal determined by these two perpendiculars, inclining now more towards the one, now towards the other. Finding it is the work of creativity in personal life.

The antithesis of theism and pantheism, Christianity and man-godhood, is posed throughout European history. Two souls live and develop, striving to attain maturity, in this culture, which is one only in its material embodiment but twofold in its spiritual potentialities. Two cities are being built within it. Culture is a means for the spirit. It may be more or less technically perfected, hence the difference in the degrees of ‘cultivation’ of different countries, or their different cultural ages; but the coefficient of culture is solely the spirit that lives within it, or, more precisely, since these spirits are not one but two, their struggle against one another and its outcome.

This same struggle takes place in Russian culture too, and becomes conscious in the soul of the Russian intelligentsia. The problem of Russian culture thus inevitably becomes the problem of the Russian intelligentsia as well. The latter was posed with unprecedented acuteness by the Russian Revolution, that mirror of our whole life, that test of our spiritual and cultural-historical powers; and to this day it remains the riddle of the Russian Oedipus, fixing his eyes upon the terrible Sphinx. In the Russian soul, with its religious passion joined at the same time to a lack of cultural self-education, the clash of the two principles occurs with particular force and devastation, producing on the one side an obscure, fantastic ‘Black Hundredism’ that mistakes itself for Christianity, and on the other an equally fanatical man-godhood, leaving only a numerically small and historically uninfluential minority outside this fateful, barren and fundamentally false antithesis. In Black Hundredism the dark forces of the past speak: its lack of culture, its benightedness and arbitrary rule. However great this force’s actual influence may be at the present moment owing to the historical conjuncture, it is nevertheless a force of the past, naturally weakening with the growth of enlightenment and culture, and deprived of a future. The practical politician inevitably has to reckon with it, but for Russian culture it has little and purely negative interest. It is different with the intelligentsia, which, whatever it may be, is a new force: the future of culture belongs to it. And in its soul a deadening ‘intelligentshchina’ struggles against the spiritual potentialities of genuinely cultural creativity. I would define ‘intelligentshchina’ as extreme man-godhood, concentrated, moreover, solely upon the intelligentsia, that is, upon themselves, in conjunction with a primitive lack of culture, an absence of education in culture understood as a process of labour and creation. And this nihilism, by diminishing the practical fitness of the class that guides culture and impeding the country’s process of cultural education, already impeded by general historical and political conditions, is quite simply our national disease.

But ‘intelligentshchina’ is not the ineradicable essence of the intelligentsia; on the contrary, it is a pathological distortion of its countenance. The numerous critics and denouncers of Landmarks refuse to understand the simple thought that one can criticise ‘intelligentshchina’, commit the crime of lèse-majesté against this idol with so many sincere and hypocritical priests, only in the name of love for the intelligentsia and faith in it. And to the extent that this resentment, this disturbed self-satisfaction, sounded in the criticism, it merely confirmed the correctness of the diagnosis. The historical undertaking outlined by Landmarks, one might say, is still at its very beginning. The future of Russian culture depends to a considerable extent on whether the Russian intelligentsia overcomes ‘intelligentshchina’ within itself and proves capable, having grown organically together with the nation, of creating a national culture. But this requires metanoia, a conscious reconsideration of oneself, self-examination and inevitable self-condemnation: in short, personal and social ‘repentance’. Our guilt before our homeland lies not only where it is usually seen and answered with social repentance, as in Mikhailovsky’s ‘penitent nobleman’, for even in this one may still remain a ‘nobleman’ in one’s soul, but in personal self-exaltation, in an arrogantly patronising attitude towards the popular, historical and ecclesial element. This inward severance from one’s native soil can be overcome only from within. And this acknowledgement of guilt, primarily personal guilt, I stress once again, rather than guilt in the abstractly social sense, can change the whole social psychology and have an effect upon practical activity as well; for the person, who determines himself in the secret places of the soul and the most intimate experiences of conscience, is nevertheless the sole creative principle in history. Only here is there freedom, and creativity belongs to freedom alone.

The present epoch is in some respects a critical period and a turning point in Russian history. If the preceding decade was predominantly a preparatory period in the growth of political self-consciousness, the present one marks a critical epoch in our cultural self-consciousness. Of course, we are still far from a satisfactory resolution of the political questions posed by life as well; but here the slow and difficult work of history must do its work. The political mountain pass has already been crossed: we live under new political and social conditions. But this is precisely what places Russian culture in a new position and demands of it a deeper self-consciousness. And this exertion of the nation’s creative powers is extraordinarily difficult, incomparably more difficult, of course, than a purely political movement. We find ourselves facing a mighty Western culture in its full flowering; moreover, we must learn from it and in a certain way make it our own. But even this very appropriation is not a merely mechanical process: it requires organic assimilation. And this must be said still more of independent cultural creativity, whose weak shoots are exposed to the danger of a graft that, although related, is nevertheless alien. Before us once again stands the antinomy of Slavophilism and Westernism, only in a new formulation. Then, as now, Westernism, that is, spiritual capitulation before the culturally stronger, remains the line of least resistance; and the striving for cultural distinctiveness, on the basis, of course, of a creative appropriation of world culture and participation in it, then, as now, can establish itself only through a feat of faith and may seem a certain act of daring. Yet did not Fichte also dare in this sense when he delivered his Addresses to the German Nation, likewise in an epoch of political and national disintegration? Russian pain and Russian anxiety for our culture must not abate in this time of difficulty and responsibility, when the tasks are so vast, the cultural forces so scattered and weak, and national self-consciousness so oppressed. And it is towards what is to come, towards the future young Russia, that our hope, our faith, is directed. May she at last reach Canaan, return to her spiritual homeland, and may she be happier than our transitional generation, which is perhaps destined to perish during forty years of wandering in the sands of the desert.

But are not the personal life of each of us and that of all historical humanity alike just such an unceasing wandering in striving towards the city to come? In this movement towards a goal beyond, an interruption alone is possible, but a standstill is impossible, in the words of the Apostle: For we have here no abiding city, but seek the one to come. For here have we no abiding city, but seek the one to come (Heb. XIII, 14).

XIII, 14).
