[¶0] Recently (in 1904) the centenary was celebrated of the birth of a remarkable thinker who, although he spent the greater part of his adult life in rural seclusion, remaining faithful to it even in the revolutionary year 1848, nevertheless exerted through his philosophical ideas a profound influence on his contemporaries, an influence that is still far from spent. And, properly speaking, among the names that express the spiritual countenance of the nineteenth century, alongside Hegel and Darwin, Marx and Auguste Comte, Spencer and Mill, we should place the comparatively little-known name of the recluse of Bruckberg, Ludwig Feuerbach.

[¶1] But although Feuerbach’s ideas remain alive, so that he may justly be counted among the spiritual leaders of modern humanity, his name suffers undeserved neglect and oblivion. The centenary, too, brought nothing except a few newspaper notices, in most cases entirely insignificant. Only one exception can be cited. A new, enlarged edition of Feuerbach’s works is now appearing through the efforts of Jodl and Bolin, two present-day Feuerbachians, and, in addition, a study of Feuerbach by the same Jodl has appeared in the series “Fromann’s Klassiker der Philosophie” (together with the monographs by Starcke and Bolin, it almost exhausts the scant literature about him). Although I am a determined and principled opponent of Feuerbach’s worldview in its very foundations, I should nevertheless particularly like to draw public attention to his ideas and his writings. For, thanks to the immense merits of the latter, foremost among which must be placed Feuerbach’s philosophical radicalism and candid directness, they pose with irresistible force the fundamental questions concerning the highest and ultimate human values, questions so often relegated to the background. Feuerbach belongs among those thinkers who do a great deal to help people consciously determine their position in one direction or the other. From him, as from a philosophical crossroads, roads diverge sharply in opposite directions; and everyone would do well, before finally setting out along the winding paths that lead deeper into the thickets, to come to this crossroads, from which the initial difference between the paths is visible. Such is the general significance of L. Feuerbach’s philosophy for our time.

[¶2] It is not at all difficult to understand why Feuerbach receives so little attention from representatives of contemporary philosophical thought, especially German academic philosophy. This is chiefly because he is too unlike them: this rough, audacious, even revolutionary writer differs far too much from the solid and decorous representatives of “scientific” critical philosophy, who are shocked by Feuerbach’s militant and passionate atheism but are unwilling to discern and appreciate in it genuinely human motives and real human suffering. Nietzsche has already become fashionable, but Feuerbach’s turn has not yet come, and perhaps never will. The fundamental and deepest reason for this cold indifference to Feuerbach (which also long prevented Nietzsche from being properly seen) is that philosophy for Feuerbach is not a matter of the academy and academic specialization, as it is for many specialists in philosophy, but a matter of life. Feuerbach lived in his philosophy; hence its agitation and inconsistency, and his constant, restless propensity to develop, recast, and alter his system. In this sense there is something Nietzschean about him. Once philosophy really becomes a matter of life, this necessarily affects its themes and fundamental problems. Problems of an academic, propaedeutic, or technical character recede into the background, often, let us admit, to the detriment of precision and clarity of thought. (Feuerbach, for example, has no specialized treatises on the theory of knowledge at all, horribile dictu; when he does touch on these questions, he lapses into a helpless, childish sensationalism that an average philosophy student could refute.) Instead, his whole attention is absorbed by philosophy’s tasks in life, questions about absolute values or the meaning of human life, that is, religious questions. Religious interest remained predominant in Feuerbach throughout his life, so that the characterization of one of Dostoevsky’s heroes applies to him fully: “God has tormented me all my life.” And despite all Feuerbach’s atheism, he ought in fairness to be called an atheistic theologian. He says of himself, in the lectures on religion that he delivered in his declining years on almost his only public appearance: “Despite the diversity of subjects in my writings, strictly speaking they all have only one aim, one will and thought, one theme. This theme is precisely religion and theology and everything connected with them.… In all my writings I have never lost sight of the relation to religion and theology, and have always occupied myself with this principal object of my thought and life, although, of course, differently at different ages.”

[¶3] Even a cursory acquaintance with his writings is enough to establish the justice of this characterization. He first appeared in print with Thoughts on Death and Immortality; his principal work, one of the most remarkable and characteristic monuments of nineteenth-century thought, is The Essence of Christianity, to which he wrote another entire volume of additions and explanations. There followed The Essence of Religion, Lectures on Religion, Theogony, and many short critical and polemical studies, even poems (couplets). This intensity of religious searching, the atheistic passion that possessed Feuerbach, the ceaseless exertions of his struggle against God, unable to find repose or finally vanquish the “tormenting” God, in short, this absence of the religious indifferentism so usual in our time, makes Feuerbach a highly distinctive and significant phenomenon in the religious life of the nineteenth century. And all these traits, which estrange him from his present-day compatriots, strangely bring him close to us and our present-day searchings. His lack of rigor in the academic sense does not repel us, for it is not for us to lay claim to such rigor; but how dear and intelligible to us are this religious ardor, the concentrated self-enclosure of his thought, his religious, albeit atheistic, enthusiasm. Stirner ironically dubbed Feuerbach a “pious atheist” (frommer Atheist), and in fact Feuerbach is pious in his atheism, although at the same time there was in him a certain implacable obstinacy (which in our view constitutes the most characteristic feature of his face in his portrait), a certain heavy fixation on a single thought that turned his heart away from God and made him a contradiction incarnate, a “pious” fighter against God. Yet perhaps sincere, arduous, agonizing struggle against God really does contain a particular (though, so to speak, preliminary) type of piety. Can it be that Feuerbach, Nietzsche, even Stirner (and among us today, Shestov), like kites devouring their own livers, so alien to and far removed from the balanced and tranquil, “sober” indifferentism of the positivists, will really find no place for themselves in one of the “many mansions” prepared by the Father, and will not at last put their searching fingers, the fingers of doubting Thomas, into the wounds of the nails? Can it be that these sincere religious sufferings will go unrewarded!?

[¶4] But if Feuerbach is so close to us by virtue of his right hand, by which we mean the direction of his thought that is free of religious indifferentism, he acquires no less vital a significance through his left hand, by which we mean the entire positive content of his teaching, his atheistic dogmatics, his religious and philosophical doctrine as a whole. This doctrine lives on to the present day, above all among the masses who profess the teaching of Marx and Engels, for in religious and philosophical matters both are disciples of Feuerbach, and unoriginal disciples at that, who for their part merely dried out their master’s doctrine. Those acquainted with the genesis of Marxism know the enormous influence exerted here by Feuerbach’s ideas. Engels himself, indeed, describes it in his pamphlet, which, though it has no independent philosophical significance, is of great historical interest: L. Feuerbach and the Outcome of Classical Philosophy. There we read the following: “…then Feuerbach’s Wesen des Christenthums appeared. At one stroke it destroyed the contradiction by unceremoniously placing materialism back on the throne. Nature exists independently of all philosophy; it is the foundation upon which we have grown; we human beings are ourselves a product of nature; outside nature and man nothing exists, and the higher beings created by our religious philosophy are merely fantastic reflections of our own being. The spell was broken, the ‘system’ burst and was cast aside, the contradiction was removed, although it existed only in the imagination. One had to experience the liberating influence of this book oneself to form an idea of it. Enthusiasm was universal: we all instantly became Feuerbachians.”

[¶5] Marx’s early writings, dating from the 1840s and now republished by Mehring, reflect this enthusiasm for Feuerbach (Heilige Familie, Zur Kritik der Hegelschen Rechtsphilosophie, in part Zur Judenfrage; in Engels, Die Lage Englands). Later Marx and Engels departed from orthodox Feuerbachianism, but Engels undoubtedly exaggerates the extent of this disagreement enormously. The materialist conception of history and the doctrine of class struggle merely supplemented and, so to speak, gave concrete form to Feuerbach’s general formula; they did not affect its essence in the slightest degree. In general philosophical ideas Marx took not the smallest step beyond Feuerbach, whose teaching was the soil in which Marxism grew and remains to this day its true general philosophical foundation. Feuerbach’s atheistic humanism constitutes the soul of Marxist socialism and is no less characteristic of it than Marx’s own doctrine of political economy, which can also be compatible with a fundamentally opposed general worldview. With the philosophical genealogy of ideas in mind, we can boldly advance the seemingly paradoxical proposition that Feuerbach is far more the spiritual father of Marxism than Marx himself, who merely gave flesh to Feuerbach’s ideas. Therefore, if present-day Social Democracy is pursued down to its general philosophical foundations, Feuerbach’s ideas will be found at its base. This connection of ideas, however, is only very faintly recognized, or not recognized at all, by participants in the contemporary Social Democratic movement, owing to its general philosophical impoverishment, which increases the further we move away from the philosophical fountainhead. In any event, anyone wishing to criticize the essence of Marxism must reckon not with socialist ideas (which are not so characteristic of Marxism as such, since they can also be combined with an opposing theoretical worldview), nor even with “economic materialism,” which is merely a superstructure erected upon Feuerbach’s teaching, but with Feuerbach’s religious and philosophical ideas. Here lies the religious and metaphysical center of Marxism, as of all materialist, atheistic socialism generally. For the purposes of religious and philosophical criticism, Marxism must be understood precisely as Feuerbachianism.

[¶6] But Feuerbach lives on not only in Marxism, for Feuerbachianism is far broader than Marxism: the latter is only a particular case of the former, and there can be several such particular cases. Certainly, the sphere of Feuerbach’s direct or indirect influence is not limited to Marxism. It makes itself felt throughout the most recent anti-religious humanistic movement, throughout atheistic humanism, in the atheistic religion of humanity that characterizes modern times. Here his influence meets and merges with the kindred influence of Comte, likewise a preacher of the religion of humanity.

[¶7] This coincidence of fundamental ideas, and the simultaneous appearance of two kindred thinkers, strangers in blood and language who scarcely knew or had heard of one another, yet were bound together by the real unity of European civilization and the spirit of the age, is astonishing. While the recluse of Bruckberg was nurturing his teachings on the religion of humanity in a Bavarian village, another recluse in Paris was creating his astonishingly, mysteriously similar doctrine of “positive polity,” founded upon the same religion of humanity. The two thinkers are separated by every difference that exists between the cultures and characters of the countries that produced them. One, a representative of the exact sciences, contemptuous of speculative philosophy and very poorly acquainted with it, arrived through scientific investigations at his final ideas, to which he gave the crudely dogmatic form of a kind of papism without a pope. The other came from Hegel, from the depths of absolute German idealism: a son of reflection and abstraction who contradicted himself in the tangled course of his thoughts and retained to the end the indelible stamp of Hegelianism; a writer of whom Lange, reserved and accustomed to philosophical subtleties, speaks as follows: “Feuerbach’s system is marked by a mystical obscurity that is not in the least clarified by its emphasis on sensuousness and self-evidence.”

[¶8] And so these very different thinkers said the same thing at the same time in different languages: they posed, and then resolved as best they could, the question of a religion without a personal God, but with humanity as god. They gave philosophical expression to modern humanity’s aspiration, in Dostoevsky’s words, to “make a life without God,” fully and definitively.

[¶9] Comte fared better among us than Feuerbach: he was better known and more revered. But as a thinker Feuerbach is much deeper, more significant, and more interesting than Comte. He offers a better introduction to the complex problem of man-godhood; his argument is subtler and stronger, although its greater complexity also reveals a greater number of weak points. It was precisely Feuerbach who gave the idea of man-godhood, the religion of humanity, full and as complete an expression as possible.

[¶10] The reader can see why Marxism is only a particular case of Feuerbachianism or Comtism, for in substance these amount to the same thing in the respect under consideration (although this does not prevent Marx from giving Comte a good kick on occasion, with his customary harshness). Atheistic humanism, or the religion of humanity, finds many forms of expression in modern history besides Marxism. It is a universal, encompassing phenomenon in the spiritual life of the modern age, insofar as that life takes shape outside Christianity or even in conscious opposition to it. The religion of humanity is the most significant religious creation of modern times. This product of the age’s religious creativity, so contradictory and complex, demands an attentive, conscientious, and impartial attitude, and the importance of studying it attentively cannot be overstated.

[¶11] Feuerbach left a large literary legacy in the form of works on philosophy, the history of philosophy, and religious philosophy, so that an account of these works would require an entire monograph. Furthermore, we must not forget that Feuerbach evolved throughout his life, beginning with Hegelianism and ending with a more or less resolute materialism. In view of this, a great many questions can be raised about his philosophical development and teaching, concerning different aspects of his worldview at different periods. We do not set ourselves so broad a task. The fact is that Feuerbach is of very different interest in the different aspects of his teaching. We have little interest, for example, in his theory of knowledge (if one can speak of such a thing), which lapses into sensationalist materialism, and of a vulgar cast at that. We are also little interested in his purely philosophical position, although it is highly characteristic of the general dissolution of Hegelianism and therefore of interest to a student of the fortunes of Hegelian philosophy. Finally, we may also leave aside Feuerbach’s direct attacks on the Christian religion and his criticism of Christian dogmas. This criticism is inseparably connected with Feuerbach’s own metaphysics; and, with its superficially rationalistic character, it does not in itself appear serious enough to require consideration on its own terms. It acquires interest and significance only in connection with his own positive teaching about religion, his philosophy of religion.

[¶12] It is in this last that we see the center of gravity and the principal interest of Feuerbach’s teaching. He himself, too, saw the main work of his life in a new doctrine of religion, which he regarded as a turning point in history. “The task of modern times,” he says, “was the reification and humanization of God, the transformation and rebirth of theology as anthropology.”

[¶13] Feuerbach’s anthropological doctrine of religion; Feuerbach as a preacher of the religion of humanity, as a religious teacher of humanistic atheism: this is the subject of the present essay. In the fundamental propositions of this doctrine of his, Feuerbach remained comparatively stationary; he tried to improve and supplement it, but left its foundations intact, foundations that had already been fully established in Wesen des Christenthums.

[¶14] Feuerbach developed and deepened the fundamental ideas about the essence of religion expressed in that work in Wesen der Religion, Vorlesungen über das Wesen der Religion, Ergänzungen und Erläuterungen zum Wesen des Christenthums, and so on. In doing so he burdened the exposition of his ideas with endless repetitions in different, sometimes scarcely different, words, with the insistence of a man obsessed by a single thought who, moreover, had grown somewhat unsociable in the countryside. Yet everywhere, throughout his activity, one question runs: what is the secret of religion? Why does man create a God for himself? Characterizing his spiritual evolution, which began with the study of theology, passed through metaphysics, and ended with the philosophy of rationalism, positivism, and atheism, Feuerbach says of himself: “God was my first thought, reason my second, man my third and final thought.” This frequently quoted statement characterizes the different answers he gave at different times of life to one and the same vital question, namely the question of God as the object of religion. God was Feuerbach’s first, second, and final thought.

[¶15] III

> Russian: III

[¶16] A preacher of atheism, Feuerbach not only does not reject religion in general, but sees in it the essential distinction between man and the animals, which have no religion. He connects this with the nature of human consciousness, to which the idea of the infinite, the chief mark of religion, is intrinsic. “Consciousness, in the strict or proper sense of the word, and consciousness of the infinite are inseparable; limited consciousness is not consciousness.”

[¶17] Feuerbach seeks not to abolish religion but to humanize it, to bring it down from heaven to earth, dissolve it in the elemental force of feeling, and, most importantly, present it as man’s division against himself, which, once recognized, must be abolished and consciously replaced by the religion of humanity. “The absolute being, man’s god, is his own being.” In the preface to his collected works, Feuerbach formulates his fundamental thought about religion in these terms:

[¶18] “The question of whether god exists or not, the opposition between atheism and theism, belongs to the eighteenth and seventeenth centuries, not the nineteenth. I deny god: by this I mean that I deny the negation of man. In place of the illusory, fantastic, heavenly affirmation (Position) of man, which in real life necessarily leads to the negation of man, I put the sensuous, real, and therefore necessarily also political and social affirmation of man. For me, the question of the existence or nonexistence of god is precisely the question of the existence or nonexistence of man.”

[¶19] “What god is for man is his spirit, his soul, and what constitutes his spirit, his soul, his heart is his god: god is man’s inner being laid open, his self (Selbst) expressed; religion is the solemn disclosure of man’s hidden treasures, the avowal of his most secret thoughts, the open confession of the mystery of love.” “Religion, at least Christian religion, is man’s relation to himself or, more precisely, to his own being, but a relation to his own being as to another being. The divine being is nothing other than the human being or, better, the being of man, freed from the limits of the individual, that is, actual, bodily man, objectified (vergegenständlicht), that is, regarded and revered as another, distinct, separate being; all determinations of the divine being are therefore determinations of the human being.”

[¶20] “Religion is man’s division against himself; he sets god over against himself as a being opposed to himself. God is not what man is; man is not what god is. God is an infinite being, man a finite one; god is perfect, man imperfect; god is eternal, man temporal; god is almighty, man powerless; god is holy, man sinful. God and man are opposites (Extreme): god is the exclusively positive principle, the sum of all realities; man is the exclusively negative, the sum of all nullities (Nichtigkeiten). But in religion man objectifies his own being. Thus it must be demonstrated that this opposition, this division between god and man with which religion begins, is man’s division against his own being.”

[¶21] “You believe in love as a divine attribute because you yourself love; you believe that god is a wise, good being because you know nothing higher above yourself than goodness and reason; and you believe that god exists, that he is therefore a subject or a being, because you yourself exist, are yourself a being.… For you god is something existing (ein Existierendes), a being, on the very same grounds on which he is for you wise, blessed, and good.”

[¶22] On this basis, “to deny man means to deny religion,” and “where man ceases, religion ceases too.”

[¶23] Thus, “belief in god is nothing other than belief in human dignity, in the divine significance of the human person.” “Man is the beginning of religion, man is the middle of religion, man is the end of religion.”

[¶24] “Our attitude toward religion,” Feuerbach sums up, “is therefore not merely negative but critical: we separate the true from the false. Religion is man’s first self-consciousness. Religions are sacred precisely because they are the traditions of the first consciousness. But what comes first for religion, god, is in reality second, for he is only man’s objectified being; and what comes second for it, man, must be posited and declared to be first. Love for humanity must not be derivative; it must become original (ursprünglich). Only then does love become a true, sacred, and dependable power. If man’s being is the highest being for man, then in practice, too, man’s love for man must be the first and highest law. Homo homini deus est: such is the highest practical rule; this is the turning point of world history. The relations of children and parents, spouses, brothers, friends, of man to man in general, in short, moral relations, are in themselves truly religious relations. Life in general is, in its essential aspects, wholly divine in nature.”

[¶25] Thus, homo homini deus est is the lapidary formula expressing the essence of Feuerbach’s religious views. This is not the denial of religion, nor even atheism: it is, in contrast to theism, anthropo-theism, with anthropology, by the nature of the case, assuming the role of theology.

[¶26] Feuerbach subsequently adds a second story to this original teaching. In his later writings (Wesen der Religion and Vorlesungen über das Wesen der Religion), the essence of religion is also seen in the feeling of dependence (Abhängigkeitsgefühl, Schleiermacher’s well-known formula) upon nature, and the original formula, Theologie ist Antropologie, receives the further addition und Physiologie. Moving ever closer to naturalism and vulgar materialism, and fearing that even his first formula sounds too idealistic, Feuerbach hastens to safeguard it against such an interpretation by giving it a corresponding materialistic interpretation.

[¶27] “The essence that man presupposes, to which he is necessarily related, without which neither his existence nor his being can be conceived, is nothing other than nature.” The divine essence revealed in nature is nothing other than nature itself, which reveals, presents, and impresses itself upon man as a divine being.… Nature is not only the first, original object; it is also the abiding foundation, the constantly existing, though hidden, ground (Hintergrund) of religion.” “My doctrine is expressed in two words: nature and man. The essence of man that I presuppose, the essence that is the ground or cause of man, to which he owes his origin and existence, is, and is called by me, not god, a mystical, incomprehensible, ambiguous word, but nature, a clear, sensuous, unambiguous word and essence.” (!!!).

[¶28] Feuerbach painstakingly adds to his principal drawing the caption: “Behold a lion, not a dog”; this must be understood materially and sensuously, not idealistically and abstractly. A former follower of Hegel, who has presumably also passed through Kant, and a philosophically educated man in general, he waves away the phantom of religion that pursues him, fences himself off from God with a crudely mythological concept of nature, which he accepts without any criticism or analysis. Although this side of his teaching has a certain distinctive historical and psychological interest, which is why we too could not pass over this later theoretical extension in silence, if only because the author himself attached such fundamental importance to it, these later self-interpretations have no philosophical interest or independent significance. We shall therefore dwell on them no further, but turn to a closer study of Feuerbach’s fundamental religious and philosophical idea, his anthropo-theism.

[¶29] Here the fundamental question arises first of all: if man really is, or must become, the true object of religion, then which man precisely? This man here or anyone one encounters, myself or another, the individual or the species; in other words, man or humanity?

[¶30] Anthropo-theism, or, in Dostoevsky’s Russian expression, man-godhood, may take as its object either particular chosen individuals or the entire human species. It may be aristocratic, oligarchic, and even egoistic (“egotism”), or democratic, extending in idea to the whole human species. It is precisely this democratic deification of the human species as a whole that characterizes Feuerbach’s worldview. His homo homini deus est must be translated as follows: the human species is god for the individual human being; the species is god for the individual.

[¶31] “The concept of divinity (we read in Feuerbach) coincides completely with the concept of humanity. All divine determinations, all the determinations that make god god, are determinations of the species. Although these are limited in the individual, their limits are removed in the essence of the species and even in its existence, insofar as it has a corresponding existence in the totality of all human beings. My knowledge, my will are limited; but limits for me are not at the same time limits for another, to say nothing of humanity; what is difficult for me is easy for another; what is impossible and incomprehensible for one age is comprehensible and possible for a future age. My life is bound to a particular time, but humanity’s life is not (?!). The history of humanity consists in nothing other than the progressive overcoming of limits that, at any particular time, are considered the limits of humanity and therefore absolute and insuperable. The future reveals ever more clearly that the supposed limits of the species were only limits of individuals.… Thus the species is unlimited; only the individual is limited.

[¶32] But the feeling of limitation is oppressive; the individual frees himself from this oppression in contemplating a higher being; in it he possesses what he lacks. The Christians’ God is nothing other than the intuition (Anschauung) of the immediate unity of species and individual, of the universal and particular being. God is the concept of the species as an individual, the concept or essence of the species, which is the species as a universal being, as the sum of all perfections, all attributes freed from the actual or imagined limits of the individual, but at the same time an individual, particular being. ‘Essence and existence are identical for god.’ This means nothing other than that he is the concept of the species, the species-being, immediately existing also as a particular being.”

[¶33] “The idea of the species (Feuerbach elaborates in his polemic with Stirner) is necessary and inalienable for the separate individual, and everyone is, after all, a separate individual. ‘We are sufficiently perfect,’ as the Unique One (Stirner) justly and elegantly puts it; but at the same time we feel ourselves limited and imperfect, for we necessarily compare ourselves not only with others but with ourselves as well. We feel ourselves limited not only morally but also sensuously, in space and time; we, these particular individuals, exist only in this particular place, in this limited time. How can we be healed of the feeling of this limitation except in the thought of the unlimited species, that is, in the thought of other people, other places, other happy times? Whoever does not therefore put the species in place of the deity leaves a gap in the individual that is necessarily filled by the idea of god, that is, the personified being of the species. Only the species is capable of abolishing divinity and religion and at the same time replacing them. (Here Feuerbach lets slip the genuine motive of struggle against God that called his religion of humanity into existence.) To have no religion means to think only of oneself; to have religion means to think of others. And this religion alone abides, for as soon as we have even two people, husband and wife, we already have religion. Two, differentiation, is the origin of religion: you are god for me, for I do not exist without you; I depend upon you; without you, there is no me either.” In Grundsätze der Philosophie der Zukunft we find the following decisive aphorisms on the divinity of the species:

[¶34] “The individual man by himself does not have the being of man within him, either as a moral or as a thinking being. The being of man is contained only in community, in the unity of man with man, a unity resting solely upon the reality of the distinction between I and you” (no. 59). “Solitude is finitude and limitation; social life is freedom and infinity. Man by himself (für sich) is only man (in the ordinary sense of the word); man with man, the unity of I and you, is god” (§ 60).

[¶35] Thus there can be no doubt that what is at issue here is nothing other than the religious deification of humanity, whether in the person of the first “you” one encounters or in the human species as a whole. Feuerbach constantly wavers (and this wavering, as we shall see below, follows from the very nature of the matter and is an unavoidable property of the philosophical position he has adopted) between a narrow and a broad understanding of humanity as God. In his polemic with Stirner he even points to the difference of the sexes and the family union as the necessary basis of a religious attitude toward man, so that the temple of this deity now contracts to the marital bedroom and nursery, now expands to embrace the arena of the life of all historical humanity. Particularistic and universalistic tendencies struggle within Feuerbach’s worldview. If, with the former in mind, Lange called it tuism (from tu, you), then with the latter in mind it must be called humanism in the broadest sense of the word. And when Feuerbach was not pressed so hard against the wall by devastating criticism, as he was in the case of Stirner, he was inclined to view the object of his religion universalistically, even showing a clear tendency to personify the species, to give the idea of humanity not only abstract but real existence, to feel the Grand-être of which Auguste Comte taught. His judgments about Christ are extraordinarily characteristic in this respect, showing how, unwittingly and against his will, certain truths of Christianity were nevertheless dear and close to the man who made the struggle against Christianity his life’s task. We read:

[¶36] “Christ is nothing other than the image in which the unity of the species was imprinted and expressed for popular consciousness. Christ loved human beings; He wished to unite them all, without distinction of sex, age, rank, or nationality. Christ is humanity’s love for itself (!!), as an image (in accordance with the developed nature of religion) or as a person, but a person who (in the religious respect) has the significance only of a symbol, an ideal person. That is why love is set forth as the distinguishing mark of His disciples. But love, as has been said, is nothing other than the practical realization of the unity of the species in disposition (Gesinnung). The species is not merely a thought: it exists in feeling, in disposition, in the energy of love. The species is what instills love in me. A heart full of love is the heart of the species. Thus Christ as the consciousness of love is the consciousness of the species. We must all become one in Christ. Christ is the consciousness of our unity. Therefore, whoever loves man for man’s sake, whoever rises to love of the species, to universal love corresponding to the essence of the species, is a Christian, is himself Christ. He does what Christ did, what made Christ Christ. Where, therefore, consciousness of the species as species arises, there Christ disappears, although His true essence is preserved, for He was only a substitute, an image of the consciousness of the species.”

[¶37] Despite all the religious poverty of these judgments, which completely eliminate the living Countenance of Christ imprinted in the hearts of those who believe in Him, they express clearly enough the thought of the real, rather than merely abstract, unity of the human species. Refusing to see this real mystical unity in the God-man, yet instinctively feeling the full importance and necessity of this unity, Feuerbach is compelled to seek it in Leviathan, and humanity is declared to be the body of Leviathan instead of the body of Christ. Inexorable logic punishes Feuerbach’s idolatrous atheism, driving him, the lover of freedom and the communist, step by step through the Hegelian deification of the state to the Roman deification of the head of state. Having rejected Christ, he sets up the head of state as the real head of humanity: Divus Caesar! Anyone who regards this as slander is invited to follow Feuerbach’s next judgments attentively:

[¶38] “The subjective origin of the state is explained by belief in man as god for man. In the state, man’s powers are differentiated and developed so that, through this division and their renewed union, an infinite being may be established; many people, many powers, are one power. The state is the sum of all realities; the state is providence for man. In the state one person replaces another, one supplements another; what I cannot do or do not know, another can. I am not alone, abandoned to the contingencies of natural force; others exist for me; I am embraced (umfangen) by the universal being, am a member of the whole. The true state is unlimited, infinite, true, perfect, divine man. Only the state is man determining himself, relating to himself, absolute man.… The bond of the state is practical atheism; people exist in the state because they exist in the state without god; the state is god for man, and for this reason it rightfully claims for itself the divine predicate of ‘majesty’ (Majestät).”

[¶39] A singular cult! But let us listen further:

[¶40] “Man is the fundamental being (Grundwesen) of the state. The state is the realized, organized, manifested totality (Totalität) of the human being. In the state, man’s essential qualities or kinds of activity are embodied in the various estates, but in the person of the head of state they are once again brought into identity (Identität). The head of state represents all estates without distinction: before him they are all equally necessary and have equal rights. The head of state is the representative of universal man.”

[¶41] This, then, is the content ultimately acquired by the formula homo homini deus est: the head of state becomes god for man, and all that remains is to revive the outward vesture of this ancient idea as well, that is, to restore sacred images of the head of state, sacrifices offered to them, and so on. Does there not pass over this, like a fateful presentiment, the shadow of him who will one day sit in the temple as god and demand divine honors for himself!..

[¶42] Be that as it may, such is the religion preached by Feuerbach. For what is at issue is precisely a religion capable of opposing the Christian religion, a consciously anti-Christian religion. A philosophical teaching alone, such as the various theories have hitherto been, is not enough for Feuerbach.

[¶43] “Philosophy hitherto (die bisherige) could not replace religion; it was philosophy, but not religion, without religion. It left the distinctive essence of religion outside itself; it claimed (vindicirte) for itself only the form of thought (Gedankenform). But if philosophy is called upon to replace religion, it must become religion as philosophy; it must take into itself, in a manner proper to it (ihr konform), what constitutes the essence of religion, the advantages that the latter has over philosophy.”

[¶44] “If in practice man has now taken the place of the Christian, then in theory, too, the human essence must take the place of the divine. In a word, we must express what we wish to become in one supreme principle, in one supreme word: only in this way do we sanctify our life and establish the ground of our tendency. Only in this way do we free ourselves from the contradiction that at present poisons our inward being: the contradiction between our life and thought and a religion fundamentally opposed to them. For we must become religious again: politics must become our religion; but this is possible only if, in our worldview too, we take as the highest of all that which turns politics into religion for us.”
