[¶0] III. AN ENIGMATIC THINKER

> Russian: III.

[¶1] (N. F. Fedorov)

> Russian: (Н. Ф.

[¶2] A substantial volume of N. F. Fedorov’s writings has recently appeared in print, containing various articles of a philosophical character. Fedorov’s name, known during his lifetime only to the narrow circle of those who knew and loved him, appears in print only now, after his death, which occurred in 1903, in his seventy-eighth year. A most original mind and a most original man speaks to you from these pages, varied in their subjects but imbued with a unity of thought. You are at once overcome by an unusual feeling, one of respect and a touch of dread before genuine, unostentatious greatness in our publicity-seeking and bustling age. Everything in Fedorov’s literary fate is unusual and exceptional: this proud and at the same time humble unwillingness to publish under his own name during his lifetime, and this posthumous publication of chaotic papers and notes on a distant frontier by devoted friends, who spared neither time nor labour for the publication, which, moreover, in accordance with the deceased’s intention, was “not for sale”. One of them, V. A. Kozhevnikov, wrote an entire study for the appearance and development of his friend’s hard-to-assimilate and paradoxical thoughts; its first volume, published in the pages of the Russian Archive, recently appeared in Moscow, likewise “not for sale”, in accordance with N. F. Fedorov’s rule.

[¶3] Already in the first part of this work V. A. Kozhevnikov has applied his outstanding and many-sided scholarly, philosophical and literary erudition to developing and elucidating N. F. Fedorov’s views, merging himself with him, so that an outside observer is at times unable to distinguish where Fedorov ends and Kozhevnikov begins. A beautiful monument to a friend’s fidelity and love!

> Russian: В. А.

[¶4] V. A. Kozhevnikov’s book serves as a key to understanding Fedorov’s own writings, for I have never encountered a writer more unliterary, capricious, intricate and unsystematic, and reading his original writings may be accessible either as a literary “obedience” for those who have already broken enough teeth on intricate writings, or else becomes possible only after Kozhevnikov’s accessible exposition (accessible, of course, to the extent that such subjects can be made accessible at all). And yet this reading is amply rewarded by sudden illuminations, inspired thoughts that flare up like sparks on these rough and awkward pages. Even someone who shares not a single thought of N. F. Fedorov’s will have to acknowledge that he is dealing with a thinker of native gifts, distinctive and entirely independent, while someone in whose soul resonances are found for N. F. Fedorov’s teaching will also acknowledge him as a great thinker, as his publishers do. In any event, one cannot but agree that in Fedorov’s book, and still more in its author, this Moscow Socrates, we have one of the most original phenomena of Russian life in modern times.

> Russian: Книга В. А.

[¶5] V. A. Kozhevnikov begins his book with the following words:

> Russian: В. А.

[¶6] “An astonishing, rare, exceptional man is no more! To remind those who knew him at all of N. F. Fedorov’s lofty mind, his varied and extensive knowledge, his conscientiousness as a worker and his ideal moral purity is superfluous: without it they will all unanimously say: he was a sage and a righteous man! And those closer to him will add: he was one of those few righteous men by whom the world is sustained!”

[¶7] Such a judgement from a man so thoughtful and cautious in his assessments of people, who moreover knew N. F. closely for twenty-eight years (compare also the introductory essays by V. A. Kozhevnikov and N. P. Peterson to volume I of Fedorov’s writings), finds weighty confirmation in the judgement of none other than L. N. Tolstoy, which can be read in Fet’s letter appended to Kozhevnikov’s book (Fet himself also concurs with it). Here we read:

[¶8] “He (L. N. Tolstoy) said: I am proud to live at the same time as such a man. One must possess much spiritual capital to deserve such comments, for I know no one who knows you who does not speak of you in a similar vein. If I did not consider it awkward, I would boldly include myself among such people.”

> Russian: «Он (Л. Н.

[¶9] L. N. Tolstoy himself asks in a letter to Iv. M. Ivakin: “Give him (N. F.) my love.” Finally, V. S. Solovyov writes to N. F. Fedorov: “For my part, I can acknowledge you as my teacher and spiritual father”, “dear teacher and comforter”. These comments alone are already enough to draw attention to the man to whom they refer. And if he remained a stranger to widespread fame during his lifetime, then, according to V. A. Kozhevnikov’s testimony, “the cause of this was partly the deceased’s astonishing modesty, not merely his complete absence of vanity, but even his fear of praise and fame... Just as in material respects this poor man renounced all property and, with the scantiest of means (after reaching the age of seventy, following thirty-five years of service, he had a pension of 17 roubles 51 kopecks a month), gave everything he had to the first person in need or the first who asked, so too he knew no feeling of authorial ownership. This is why this tireless, original writer resolutely recognised no copyright whatsoever, and if he consented to the expression of his thoughts in print, it was only anonymously, or, still more willingly, under someone else’s name, giving his spiritual possessions to the first person who wanted them” (Kozhevnikov, 1).

> Russian: Сам Л. Н.

[¶10] N. F. served first as a teacher in district schools, then as assistant librarian at the Chertkov Library, subsequently as the official on duty in the reading room of the Rumyantsev Museum and, finally, at the library of the Moscow Archive of Foreign Affairs. Among those studying there he was known as an extraordinary bibliographer, ready to help anyone who needed it.

> Russian: Н. Ф.

[¶11] “He was entirely content with his position close to books and to people engaged in literary and intellectual labour; he wanted no changes or improvements; he stubbornly refused promotions in the service and advancement in rank, sometimes astonishing his superiors by this; he declined the salary increases offered him, asking that they be transferred to one of his colleagues with a family” (Kozhevnikov, 3).

[¶12] An ascetic in his life, who astonished those who knew him by his lack of demands, although at the same time an opponent of asceticism on principle, he astonished them by his positively fire-breathing vitality. “Who among those who visited the reading room in the seventies and eighties, and later the so-called ‘catalogue room’,” writes Kozhevnikov, “does not remember the tall, withered, slightly stooping but energetic figure of this old man dressed in threadbare rags, in whose eyes the fire of chaste youth sparkled...” Into every occupation, and above all into his beloved library work, he put life and energy and self-sacrifice, “voluntariness”, a going beyond duty, and knew how to awaken them in others.

[¶13] To expound N. F.’s teaching, even in the most general and brief outline, in a short note is an utterly impossible undertaking. Here at every step thought makes such unusual, abrupt movements, such sharp turns, and is at the same time so distinctive in its content, that much would have to be said separately on each point. V. A. Kozhevnikov has performed this task in his book on Fedorov, and to it we refer the inquisitive reader. Here we intend not to expound this teaching, but merely to arouse interest in it, to indicate its theme for the thinking and thoughtful reader. We shall therefore pass over in complete silence N. F. Fedorov’s highly interesting ideas about the Orthodox Church, whose zealous and convinced son he was, about the museum and the university, about education, his original conception of autocracy and critique of constitutionalism (somewhat Slavophile), and his political-economic views, with their sharp criticism of urban industrialism and industrial capitalism.

[¶14] Many-sidedness is the distinguishing feature of N. F.’s teaching: the theologian and philosopher, the historian and economist, the student of the state and the natural scientist will find nourishment here. The subjects of our polymath’s reflections were as varied as his bibliographical knowledge and reading were extensive.

[¶15] N. F. considers the fundamental sin of philosophy and science to be its separation from the “common task”, the recognition of knowledge as an independent, self-sufficient task, an end in itself; and this separation of thought from action, outwardly expressed in the segregation of the learned estate into a corporately closed milieu and its opposition to the unlearned estate, has led philosophy to subjectivism, illusionism and the dualistic division of the human spirit into theoretical and practical reason. N. F.’s thoughts on the history of ancient and modern philosophy, from Socrates to Nietzsche, sparkle with originality and insight (compare: Kozhevnikov, cited work, chapter IV, 2, 3). His antipathy is particularly great towards Kant, who sanctioned the division into practical and pure reason, and towards Nietzsche, in whom he saw the last word in the development of the philosophy of estate-based isolation, fragmentation and thought without action.

[¶16] “Everyone must be a knower and everything must be the object of knowledge inseparable from action, for without the second there can be no first. The totality of knowing rational beings, in relating to the entirety (totality) of all that is knowable, will bring the world or nature to self-knowledge and self-government through rational beings who, fully armed with knowledge and united volitional and moral energy, will acquire a strength and power whose limits it is at present impossible even to foresee. When the question of the tasks of wisdom is posed in this way, the object of the first reason, the theoretical, would no longer be thought about thought, but thought about action and about the project of the universal task, while practical reason would become its executor; the third reason, as the creation of likenesses, would serve as an introduction to the second, creating examples (‘models’) of what is to be re-created.”

[¶17] There is one universal, exhaustive theme for philosophy: human kinship and non-kinship.

[¶18] “Despite its negative, incompletely and indistinctly apprehended relation to kinship and non-kinship, philosophy is nevertheless nothing other than the science of kinship and non-kinship, expounded in a form inaccessible to the majority, that is, a non-kindred form, abstract, speculative, devoid of feeling, in the form of ‘pure thinking’, rather than in a project of practical action.”

[¶19] The idea of kinship as the model, and project of universal kinship, of the organisation of all humanity, is one of N. F.’s central religious-social ideas. In egoism a person lives for himself, tearing himself away from others; in altruism a person sacrifices his own personality for others, a personality that before God is worth more than the whole world; and only kinship is the unity of all the “I”s in a complete “we”.

[¶20] “One must live not for oneself alone and not for others alone, but with everyone (brotherhood) and for everyone (fatherhood); because to live not with everyone but only for others, that is, for some, even if many, would mean doing good to some while causing harm to others. One must live with all who live, because nothing greater can now be done, and anything less is immoral.”

[¶21] This bond of humanity in universal kinship, in which all are conscious of themselves as brothers, feeling themselves to be sons, is expressed in the designation “son of man”, so frequently applied to himself by the Saviour. “Man, generic man, all-man, superman: all these concepts are merely a barren distortion of the sole life-giving and fruitful concept, son of man.” Proceeding from this concept, N. F. offers a powerful, at times irresistible criticism of the fundamental concepts of modern, neo-pagan humanism, materialist socialism (see Kozhevnikov, chapter 4) and progress.

[¶22] “Progress is self-exaltation... consists in the consciousness of superiority, first, of an entire generation (the living) over its predecessors (the dead), and, second, of the younger over the older; the superiority itself, the object of the younger generation’s pride, will consist in an increase in knowledge, in the improvement and elevation of the thinking being; even the development of moral convictions will be an object of the younger generation’s exalting itself over the older... The triumph of the younger generation over the older is an essential feature of progress. Biologically, progress consists in the younger’s swallowing up the older, in sons’ displacing fathers; psychologically it is the replacement of love for fathers by soulless self-exaltation over them, contempt for them. Sociologically, progress is expressed in the attainment of the greatest measure of freedom accessible to man... Sociology is the science not of communion, but of separation or enslavement... Progress as the negation of fatherhood and brotherhood is the most complete moral decline, the negation of morality itself.”

[¶23] What, then, is the common task to which humanity is called if it adopts as the foundation of its relations a kindred unity-in-manyness, whose norm and ideal is given in Christianity’s fundamental dogma, that of the Holy Trinity, and whose prefiguration we have in the Church? This task is the struggle and victory of human consciousness over unconscious nature, the “regulation of nature”. The cause of poverty and limitation lies not in the conditions of distribution, where socialism often seeks them, but in slavery to nature and its blind elemental forces, which finds its most immediate expression in the dominion of death.

[¶24] “Humanity’s task is resolved not by the question of wealth and poverty, but by the question of life and death, the question: why does that which lives die? Humanity’s task consists in turning an unfree world, where everything is determined by physical necessity, by unconscious and involuntary causality, into a conscious and free world, which we can now picture to ourselves only in thought, but which we must bring into being actually, actively and really, because it is not merely an ideal but also a project in which the highest demands of knowledge and moral feeling, of truth, beauty, the good or goodness, and universal happiness and bliss converge, are reconciled and united. Natural poverty is the cause of enmity among people and of the growth of suffering, and the way out can only be a change in people’s relations to nature.”

[¶25] Here we approach the very central point of Fedorov’s “project”. Kindred humanity, the “sons of man”, grieving for their dead fathers, must inevitably set themselves as their task in victory over nature the raising of the dead.

[¶26] “Rational beings, truly possessing the present (in the fullness of knowledge and power), also acquire power over the past, the power to re-create what has been, and at the same time to determine the future in every possible perfection. What is required, consequently, is a paradise that is not universal, a Kingdom of God that is not other-worldly, but this-worldly; what is required is the transfiguration of this-worldly, earthly reality, extended to all the heavenly worlds and bringing us closer to the other world unknown to us... The Kingdom of God, apprehended in this its fullness, in the fulfilment of God’s will, directed by God, realised by Him through us, is the product of all people’s good powers, all their good capacities in their totality, the result of the fullness of knowledge, the depth, and purity of feeling, the might of a good will” (Kozhevnikov, 279–280). “Christ’s resurrection demands the raising of all... Christianity is the common task of raising the dead, and not thought alone, and it cannot be replaced by any other task.” “The preaching of life, immortality and resurrection: that is the essence of the Saviour’s preaching; He calls the Heavenly Father ‘the God of the Fathers’, that is, of those who have died, but who are at the same time not dead but alive” (Mark 12:26–7), that is, who are to come to life, to rise, for “God did not create death” and does not wish a single one to perish (John 6:39), wishes “all to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth” (I Timothy 2:4). God’s commandment is eternal life (John 12:50); accordingly, the Saviour’s “promise” is also eternal life (John 2:25). Hence He says of Himself: “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25).”

[¶27] The duty of love towards the fathers, the duty of raising them, becomes the “common task” of the sons of man, while resurrection becomes immanent instead of transcendent. If the sons of man do not fulfil this duty of theirs, “the work of salvation can also be accomplished by divine power alone! Salvation not only can, but will take place without people’s participation, unless they unite in the common task, but this salvation will be only for the elect; in relation to the rest it will be an expression of wrath; and therefore all our care, all our attention must be directed towards not angering the Lord, towards making it possible, in accordance with His desire, for all to come to knowledge of the truth... For even according to the Gospel itself, the end of the world will come only if union does not take place, if the preaching of the Gospel proves unsuccessful; famine and diseases are merely the beginning of the end!.. But if union in the common task does take place, then there will be no end either, because in this case the end of the world-process taking place within and outside us will be the transformation of the blind course of the earth and of all worlds into one governed by the collective reason of all generations that have come to life, that have risen.”

[¶28] No idea of N. F.’s is exposed to such danger of misinterpretation, distortion and vulgarisation as this dizzyingly bold “project” of his. The danger is particularly great of interpreting N. F.’s religious idea in the spirit of contemporary scientific positivists à la Mechnikov, and turning the religious ideal into an intolerable banality that leaves those already in circulation far behind. N. F. was right to make his ideas so “esoteric” and to shun the printing press. I cannot refrain from quoting the judgements on N. Fedorovich’s “project” by F. M. Dostoevsky and V. S. Solovyov that are contained in the letters appended by V. A. Kozhevnikov. In these letters we have literary-historical documents of the very first importance, casting light on the most intimate and most hidden expectations and thoughts of both our thinkers.

[¶29] N. P. Peterson gave F. M. Dostoevsky a brief outline of N. F.’s ideas (without naming the thinker). F. M. Dostoevsky’s reply is dated 24 March 1878 (St Petersburg). Here is what F. M. Dostoevsky writes there, among other things:

> Russian: Ф. М. М.

[¶30] “First of all, a question: who is this thinker whose thoughts you have conveyed? If you can, tell me his real name... Next I shall say that in essence I agree entirely with these thoughts. I read them as though they were my own. Today I read them (anonymously) to V. S. Solovyov, our young philosopher, who is now giving lectures on religion, lectures attended by a crowd of almost a thousand. I deliberately waited for him in order to read him your exposition of the thinker’s ideas, since I found much that was similar in his outlook. This gave us two splendid hours. He deeply sympathises with the thinker and intended to present almost the same thing in his next lecture. But here is the definite and firm question that I intended to put to you as early as December: in the exposition of the thinker’s ideas the most essential thing is undoubtedly the duty of the resurrection of ancestors who lived before, a duty which, if it were fulfilled, would stop procreation, and there would come about what is designated in the Gospel and the Apocalypse as the first resurrection. But in your exposition you have not indicated at all how you understand this resurrection of the ancestors, in what form you picture it to yourself and believe in it. That is, do you understand it in some mental, allegorical way, like, for example, Renan, who understands it as human consciousness becoming clear at the end of humanity’s life to such a degree that it will be perfectly clear to the minds of those future people how much, for example, such-and-such an ancestor influenced humanity, by what he influenced it, how, and so forth, to such a degree that the role of every person who lived before will become perfectly clear, his deeds will be divined (by science, by the power of analogy), and all this to such a degree that we will, of course, also become conscious of the extent to which all these former people, by influencing us, have thereby each become reincarnated in us; and consequently in those final people, who have come to know everything and are harmonious, with whom humanity will end; or does your thinker picture to himself directly and literally, as religion intimates, that the resurrection will be real, personal, that the abyss separating us from the souls of our ancestors will be filled in, overcome by death already overcome, and they will rise not in our consciousness alone, not allegorically, but actually, personally, really, in bodies. (But, of course, not in present-day bodies, for the very fact that immortality will come about, that marriage and the birth of children will cease, already testifies that the bodies in the first resurrection, appointed to take place on earth, will be different bodies, not the present ones, that is, perhaps such as Christ’s body after his resurrection, before the Ascension at Pentecost?).

[¶31] An answer to this question is necessary, otherwise everything will be incomprehensible. I forewarn you that we here, that is, Solovyov and I, at least believe in a real, literal, personal resurrection and that it will take place on earth...”

[¶32] An involuntary tremor seizes one on reading this letter now, thirty years after it was written. It is as though the dead lips of the man who has left us had opened, and he had said explicitly to the end what was spoken of in hints at various places in his works. Nevertheless, the letter still lacks final clarity; it would be very important to have in one’s hands the manuscript sent to him, to which this letter is the reply, in order fully to comprehend its content. Is it a question of resurrection or of raising the dead, and does Dostoevsky not here confuse his chiliastic hopes for the first resurrection and the thousand-year kingdom, which is nevertheless followed by the general and final, “transcendent” resurrection, with the “project” of a universal and final, “immanent” resurrection that is to replace and eliminate the transcendent one? (For N. F.’s own comments on this letter, see The Philosophy of the Common Task, 485–488.)

[¶33] But such doubts and perplexities, still appropriate in relation to Dostoevsky, are entirely inadmissible in relation to Solovyov, who, through his personal contact with N. F. Fedorov, undoubtedly understood perfectly well what the wilful thinker wanted, what he was driving at and what he meant (this is also confirmed by V. A. Kozhevnikov’s personal recollections). And here is what we read in V. S. Solovyov’s letter to N. Fedorovich (dating from the early eighties; the originals are kept by V. A. Kozhevnikov):

[¶34] “I read your manuscript avidly and with delight of spirit, devoting the whole night and part of the morning to reading it, and for the next two days, Saturday and Sunday, thought much about what I had read. I accept your ‘project’ unconditionally and without any discussion: what needs to be discussed is not the project itself, but some of its theoretical foundations or presuppositions, and also its first practical steps towards its realisation... Since the appearance of Christianity, your ‘project’ is the first forward movement of the human spirit along Christ’s path. For my part, I can only acknowledge you as my teacher and spiritual father. But your purpose is not to make proselytes and found a sect, but to save humanity through a common task, and for that it is necessary above all that your project should become generally recognised. What means could lead to this is what I should principally like to discuss with you when we meet.”

[¶35] In another letter (undated), V. S. Solovyov makes certain comments on the question of resurrection:

[¶36] “The work of resurrection, not only as a process but also in its very goal, is something conditioned. The simple physical resurrection of the dead cannot in itself be a goal. To resurrect people in the condition in which they strive to devour one another, to resurrect humanity at the stage of cannibalism, would be both impossible and entirely undesirable. Thus the goal is not the simple resurrection of humanity’s constituent persons, but its restoration in its proper form, namely in a condition in which all its parts and individual units do not exclude or replace one another but, on the contrary, preserve and complement one another. With this you are of course entirely in agreement; it is your own thought. But here is what seems to me to follow from it: if humanity’s proper form (as it will also be in the life of the age to come) is still only desired, rather than actual, then actual humanity cannot possibly be reasoned about after the pattern of humanity as it ought to be, because if humanity as it ought to be (in which God is all in all) entirely does the Father’s will, so that here God Himself acts directly and inseparably in human actions, so that there is no need for any special divine actions, it is quite otherwise with natural humanity, which does not do the Father’s will at all and is in no way the direct expression and form of the Godhead; in so far as our actions do not accord with God’s will, that will acquires for us its own particular action, which appears to us as something external. If humanity by its activity covered the Godhead, then indeed God would not be visible behind people; but this is not the case now, we do not cover God, and therefore divine action (grace) peers out from behind our actuality, and moreover in forms all the more alien (miraculous) the less we ourselves correspond to our God. If an adult son is so inwardly at one with his beloved father that in all his actions he directly does his will, without needing any external instructions, then for a child the father’s will necessarily appears to a certain degree as an external power and an incomprehensible wisdom, from which he demands instructions and guidance. We are all still children and need the tutelage of external religion. Consequently, in positive religion and the church we have not only the beginning and prefiguration of resurrection and the future Kingdom of God, but also the true (practical) path and actual means to this goal. Therefore our task, too, must have a religious, rather than a scientific character, and must rest on the believing masses, rather than on the arguments of our intellectuals.”

[¶37] The extensive excerpts we have made from V. S. Solovyov’s letter testify to the strong impression made upon him by Fedorov’s ideas, “the first forward movement of the human spirit along Christ’s path”. Given such an assessment of these ideas, it is natural to look for traces of their influence in the philosopher’s own works too, and we do indeed find them. To the greatest extent, as V. A. Kozhevnikov also indicates (pp. 277–278), this manifested itself in Solovyov’s famous paper at the Moscow Psychological Society in 1891, “On the Decline of the Mediaeval World-View”. If one rereads this paper after Fedorov’s writings, one gains a definite impression that the paper’s essential content is Fedorov’s ideas left incompletely expressed, conveyed with great evasiveness and caution, with hints incomprehensible to the uninitiated. Fedorov himself, too, recognises them as his own, but sternly reproaches Solovyov for his evasive, ambiguous formulation, for leaving them incompletely expressed (see: Fedorov, I, 479–490). By the common Christian task, as Fedorov declares here, Solovyov “means precisely the raising of the human race”, but he “not only nowhere speaks out clearly and openly, but has taken such pains to conceal his thought that in the discussion following the paper there was not even any mention either of the common task or of resurrection”. “19 October 1891”, Fedorov therefore concludes, “might have become the greatest of days, when a beginning would have been made of Christianity as a common task of all the fathers”, if Solovyov had not feared “above all to be ridiculous” (487–488). For our part, we suppose that, besides considerations of outward and inward historical and religious tact, and perhaps also of tactics, fully justified by pedagogical considerations, Solovyov, for all his closeness in principle and even dependence on Fedorov in recognising the ultimate tasks, differed greatly from him in his understanding of their immediacy and the means of approaching them. Elsewhere in Fedorov we find a polemic with F. M. Dostoevsky (concerning his letter known to us) and V. S. Solovyov, in which he observes: “Dostoevsky, speaking of the duty of resurrection... probably supposes that the fulfilment of this duty is possible only in the most distant future, no earlier than in approximately 25,000 years, that is, just as Solovyov also thought of it; and that Solovyov thought so we know for certain” (440). From this testimony, among other things, we may indirectly judge Solovyov’s eschatology in the eighties and nineties, when it differed considerably, and to a certain extent even in principle, from that expressed in the Three Conversations, where the sense of a near end, cutting short a failed history like a deus ex machina, differs considerably, through this passivity of expectation, from the vigorous, active eschatology of the preceding period. Returning to the relations between Solovyov and Fedorov, let us add that even apart from the paper mentioned, when one rereads Solovyov’s writings after Fedorov’s works or alongside them, many obscurities and things left unsaid in Solovyov receive new illumination. Only after becoming acquainted with Fedorov’s ideas did I for the first time understand what, for example, the fundamental idea of Solovyov’s aesthetics concerning the ultimate tasks of art means, or at least what it may mean (in the articles of 1889–1890, “Beauty in Nature” and “The General Meaning of Art”, collected works, volume VI). Art is assigned the following task here:

[¶38] “Perfect art in its final task must embody the absolute ideal not in imagination alone but also in reality; it must spiritualise, transubstantiate our actual life. If it is said that such a task exceeds the limits of art, the question is: who established those limits? Of course, this future development of aesthetic creation depends on the general course of history; for artistry in general is the sphere of the embodiment of ideas, rather than of their original inception and growth.”

[¶39] Dostoevsky’s words “beauty will save the world”, taken as the epigraph to the first of these articles, are interpreted in the sense of a creatively transformative effect upon the world, and it seems to me not difficult to recognise here, expressed in the language of aesthetics, Fedorov’s idea of the “regulation of nature”, with the “duty of raising the dead” as its moral centre. One could cite further examples of Solovyov’s dependence upon Fedorov (for example, in his judgements on the attitude towards nature in connection with the famine, on superhumanity in the articles on Nietzsche and Lermontov, and others), which weakens and perhaps even ceases towards the end of the nineties, when, according to V. A. Kozhevnikov’s testimony, their personal relations, too, deteriorated. In any event, both of them, each in his own way, defend the ideal of activity in Christianity and struggle against the passivity of ascetic metaphysics, although in Fedorov this sometimes went as far as denying or underestimating the importance of personal ascetic discipline. Christianity calls us to an active attitude towards nature and indicates the highest moral goal for it.

[¶40] “In a teaching that calls everyone to freedom (‘You are called to freedom, brothers’, Galatians 5:13; ‘know the truth and the truth will make you free’, John 8:32) and everyone to knowledge of the truth (‘May all come to knowledge of the truth’), humanity’s active participation in the work of its salvation cannot be subject to the slightest doubt. It is necessary not through physical necessity, for it could also be accomplished by divine power alone; it is necessary as an expression of the greatest wisdom and the highest morality, as an expression of the fullness of the love and goodness of God, our Father, towards people.” “The transformation by God through us of a still imperfect world (only potentially destined for perfecting) into a perfect one, without in the least diminishing the Creator, immeasurably elevates creation through the fulfilment of the Heavenly Father’s will on earth and in heaven (in other worlds), through the fulfilment of the Only-Begotten Son’s commandment to become like Him in the deeds that He performed, deeds of salvation and the restoration of life. Will not man’s realisation of the Christian plan of universal salvation be the realisation of the fullness of love both for God and for our neighbours, for the Heavenly Father and for earthly fathers and brothers? And will not the world, transfigured by such love, become the expression of the God of love and concord Himself, the Triune God?”

[¶41] Failure to understand Christianity’s active injunctions, in Fedorov’s view, led to the materialism of the nineteenth century, which is “the direct consequence of separating the heavenly from the earthly, that is, of the complete distortion of Christianity, whose injunction consists precisely in uniting the heavenly with the earthly, the divine with the human” (Fedorov, I, 32). “The world is not given for looking at; contemplation of the world is not man’s goal. Man has always considered it possible to act upon the world, to change it in accordance with his wishes.” In Fedorov’s conviction, God created not the best world, already finished, but only a potentially best one, which can become the best, but with the participation of human labour. “God educates man through man’s own experience. He is a King, but a King who does everything not only for man but also through man. This is precisely why there is no purposiveness in nature (as yet): man himself must introduce it, and in this precisely lies the highest purposiveness.” Nothing is gratuitous, everything is earned by labour: such is the highest principle, and what we have received gratuitously we must replace with what is earned by labour, pay the debt, and in this lies the great moral foundation of the idea of the regulation of nature.

[¶42] “We have nothing of our own, produced by us, but everything is gratuitous, or rather, owed. Our life is not ours at all; it can be taken away, alienated, is mortal. We received it from our fathers, who are in the same debt to their parents, and so on. Birth is only the transfer of a debt, not its repayment. From our parents, as from our ancestors in general, we received not only life but also the means of life, consisting in those methods of work in which almost everything belongs to our predecessor and only very little, and only in exceptional cases, to us.” “We live not only at another’s expense, at the expense of nature, which is not kindred to us; we also live at the expense of those like ourselves, even of those closest to us, replacing them, displacing them, and such an existence makes us already <not only> unworthy but also criminal... Man’s essential, distinguishing feature is two feelings: the sense of mortality and shame at birth. One may surmise that all the blood must have rushed to man’s face when he learnt of his beginning, and how pale he must have turned when he saw the end of one like himself, of his own blood!.. Animal-like birth is a punishment; but to one who reflects on the process of birth something still more terrible is revealed: death...” “The content of the debt is always the same; its content is always life in one form or another of its manifestation, as a whole or in parts, in its totality or in its separate aspects, material or spiritual... and therefore the discharge of the debt can only be the restoration of life, the raising of the dead.” And this is attainable only by liberation from humanity’s universal enslavement to the elemental forces of nature, by its regulation, which must be “the universal labour obligation of the human race”. It follows that “immortality and the raising of the dead, which complete the fullness of knowledge and the fullness of man’s moral and rational power over nature, are the labour that turns the gratuitous into one’s own, clearing the debt”. “This debt is the only one common to all people, as death is common to all people. All the obligations laid upon us by the teaching of the Triune God are expressed in one commandment, the commandment concerning the duty of raising the dead. In opposition to Islam we may say: ‘There is no other God but the Triune God, and the raising of the dead is His commandment!’”

[¶43] In the preceding lines I have pursued only one aim: by citing some of N. F. Fedorov’s thoughts, to make the importance and seriousness of his ideas and dispositions felt, and thereby to call for a more serious acquaintance with him. The latter is not easy and will demand patience and perseverance. Fedorov, who did not publish during his lifetime, is protected even now from being frittered away in feuilleton graphomania and everyday frivolity by the hieroglyph of his style and by publication “not for sale”, in accordance with the thinker’s injunction, piously observed by his friends and admirers. But even with a more attentive reading of him, it will hardly be easy to find someone who shares all his ideas, who does not halt, stumbling before his boldest and ultimate conclusions and expectations, concerning which it may perhaps be fitting to recall Hamlet’s words: “the rest is silence!” (the rest is silence!). Yet it is hardly likely that after this reading he will not feel himself given wings, made fruitful, enriched. And the prophetic, enigmatic and terrible, yet at the same time great and kindling things that he reads there will make him look into the very depths both of his own soul and of mother-nature, God’s world. And perhaps, even without feeling himself a disciple in everything and to the end, he too will nevertheless call the departed righteous man, following Solovyov, not only a “teacher” but also, which is far more, a comforter!
