[¶0] FROM THE PHILOSOPHY OF CULTURE

[¶1] I. REFLECTIONS ON NATIONALITY

> Russian: I. РАЗМЫШЛЕНИЯ О НАЦИОНАЛЬНОСТИ

[¶2] Our attitude towards the problem of nationality, as towards other problems in the philosophy of culture, necessarily reveals the character of our general worldview or of those general philosophical premises which are invariably present alongside it, sometimes even without the awareness of those making the judgements, and which partly predetermine the course of the argument. The question of nationality, this must be said plainly and affirmed decisively, by no means belongs among those questions which can be considered and studied apart from such premises, voraussetzungslos (if indeed any such questions exist), solely through the rigorous application of scientific methods. However important the scientific study of the various manifestations of nationality may be, the general metaphysical problem of the nation, that is, questions concerning its nature, value and idea, is neither posed nor encompassed within it. Here, as elsewhere, science merely leads us up to these questions and supplies its material for posing them, but stops at that point, provided that it is critical, that is, aware of its actual competence. That nationality exists at all as a quite particular, distinctive historical force is, of course, disputed by no one, not even by anyone who would wish to abolish this fact. We learn ever more about how a nation expresses itself in history, everyday life, customs and institutions from our expanding historical experience of life and from scientific study. But the question of what a nation is shifts the discussion to a still more general plane. In answering it, the fundamental metaphysical disagreements must inevitably emerge. Two fundamental tendencies have naturally taken shape in the history of philosophy, assuming different formulations within it: the counterparts in modern philosophy to the nominalism and realism of medieval philosophy are positivism, empiricism or idealism (of course, “transcendental” idealism), in their opposition to mystical or spiritualistic realism. For the first view, being is exhausted by the immediate givenness of states of consciousness, which, in its expression and logical elaboration, clothes itself in the symbolism of general concepts and judgements. For the other view, reality is incomparably deeper than what is given in experience; the testimony of experience consists merely in the contact of genuine res with our subjectivity, in its changing and imperfect, inadequate symbols (“alles Vergängliche ist nur ein Gleichniss”). If the first view, nominalism, inevitably dissolves the world into the subjective illusionism of a closed, immanent experience (one, moreover, artificially restricted and dissected), the second postulates and seeks to comprehend, in the form now accessible to us, the world of things, of that which is (τό ὄντως ὄν). Applied to the question of the nation, this division in philosophical thought produces the following results. For positivistic or idealistic nominalism and illusionism, the nation is wholly dissolved into an aggregate of facts connected in one way or another with national life, and is merely an abstraction from these facts, or a collective concept in the sense in which, for example, a forest is an aggregate of many trees. Here the content of the concept of the nation is in principle exhausted by the aggregate of national traits and manifestations, determined through as complete an enumerationem simpli. cem as possible, and an explanation of its origin by the means available to history fully resolves its problem. Such is the standpoint of the philosophy of the Enlightenment, old and new; Chernyshevsky already reasoned about the nation in this way, and Milyukov reasons in approximately the same way today. The present adherents of neo-Kantian idealism ought also to reason thus if they are to remain consistent, although, through some misunderstanding, some of them do speak of creating a national culture. The philosophy of realism illuminates the question of the nation quite differently. For it, the nation is not merely the aggregate of its phenomenological manifestations, enumerated and studied by science, but above all a certain substantial principle, creatively producing its manifestations, yet never contained wholly within any one of them and therefore never merging with them. The historical school of law did not think through the idea of the “national spirit”, with which it operated, precisely from this metaphysical side; nevertheless, the actual relation of things was formulated in it (albeit in application to the particular question of the formation of law) quite correctly, though in the terms of positivistic historicism. The nation exists not as a collective concept or a logical abstraction, but as a creative living principle, as a spiritual organism whose members are inwardly and vitally connected with it. When we experience national feeling, sense the nation in ourselves or ourselves in the nation, we apprehend a determination of ourselves that belongs to being, and is not merely epiphenomenal. The customary comparison of our relation to the fatherland with our relation to our mother becomes especially interesting and instructive when these two opposing worldviews are set beside one another. What are the relations of sonship, fatherhood and motherhood, or that force, so beloved of natural scientists, so mysterious and enigmatic, called heredity? For some, these are sexual conception, then the development of the organism in the mother's womb, a “nine-month lodging”, then an aggregate of everyday relations, childhood memories, habits and so on and so forth, and, in addition, the hereditary transmission, together with diseases and predispositions to them, of sometimes the minutest traits of character. For others, here is the mystery of mysteries, an almost immediate self-manifestation of the transcendent. In nothing, perhaps, are the mystery and depth of life and the real unity of the human being so manifest as here. The fatherland (patria, patrie, Vaterland, fatherland, πατρίς) is merely an extended concept of fatherhood and sonship, an assembly of fathers and mothers who have begotten and continually beget sonship. This idea of the nation as a real unity of blood found a vivid embodiment in the language of the Bible (and not only there), in which tribes and peoples are designated as persons by the names of their progenitors or leaders (the names of the tribes of Israel, Asshur, Moab, Gog and others); this personification of nationalities is, of course, not merely an artistic image or a manner of expression, but implies a definite religious-metaphysical idea.

[¶3] Thus both philosophical views, nominalism and realism, necessarily lead to different metaphysics of the nation: in the one case dissolving it wholly into phenomenology, in the other affirming it as a transcendent reality intuitively recognised in immediate experience. These metaphysical disagreements have no bearing whatever on the empirical study of the nation, on a science of the nation which, if faithful to its own methods, can to a certain extent be pursued independently of philosophical premises. But they become very keenly felt when questions of values are discussed, and generally whenever a person acts not merely as a scientific recorder but as an agent guided by particular ideas, dispositions and impulses of the will. Starting from the premises of mystical realism, we must conceive and feel nationality solely as a certain substantial being, existing before consciousness and constituting its ontological prius. We are conscious of ourselves as members of the nation because we really belong to it as to a living spiritual organism. This belonging of ours is entirely independent of our consciousness; it exists before it, apart from it, and even in spite of it. It is not only a product of our consciousness or our will; rather, on the contrary, this very consciousness of nationality and the will towards it are products of nationality, in the sense that conscious and volitional life in general already presuppose for their existence a certain ontological core of personality, as a nourishing organic medium in which they arise and develop, subsequently acquiring, of course, the capacity to act upon the personality itself. However we define this core of personality, as instinct with Bergson, or subliminal consciousness with James, or in any other rationalistic concepts created in the light of daytime consciousness already made manifest, all these will be attempts more or less suitable in practice for orientation towards “instrumental” ends, but in essence, of course, equally inadequate, to express in words, to logicise that which is alogical or supralogical or even antilogical, yet at the same time serves as a substratum for the logos. Consciousness moves along the boundary between being and non-being; it is differentiation, or, as Hegel showed, every Werden is synthesised from Sein and Nichtsein, omnis definitio est negatio. Therefore the empirical “I” not only fails to express our genuine, substantial personality, but cannot even lay claim to doing so: it is inadequate to it; it merely discloses, reveals it, and does so in a state of being affected by another being and in accordance with the character of that affection. Yet the human being, although endowed with creative powers together with the image of the Creator, is nevertheless a creature, and not his own creator; in this sense he is a given even to himself, that is, a creation. And by the immutable determination of the Creator, the human being is created as a son and at the same time a father, as a daughter or a mother, not merely in a verbal but in a real sense, just as the branches of trees in a forest do not grow straight out of the air or the earth, but grow out of the trunk. And once again our consciousness is powerless to change anything essential in this reality, just as a Russian cannot be reborn a foreigner, even if he were as French at heart as the brigadier’s wife in Fonvizin.

[¶4] In scientific thought, which inhabits a world of abstractions, the abstract and therefore more general becomes more familiar than the real and concrete; science, as it were, merely condescends to permit the existence of an individual specimen of a given species or genus in all its rebellious and unruly individuality; at any rate, for science individuality is accidentia, while general traits of the species are essentia. Science cannot, of course, be reproached for this convention, which arises from its “pragmatic” aims and the limitations of human cognitive powers, compelling it to resort to abstraction; but at the same time one must always resist the extension of this habit of thought beyond the boundaries of science. According to this habit, it is customary to think that humanity or the human being in general exists immediately (homo sapiens is likewise a characteristic designation of the species in natural science), although this human being also happens to belong to a particular nation, speak a particular language (until the invention of Esperanto) and, finally, be a member of a family. The actual relation is precisely the opposite of this representation. What exists in reality is the concrete human being, the individual; he is born into a particular family, into a particular tribe and nation, and enters each of these broader groupings only through the mediation of his own immediate concreteness, without destroying it, but merely in a certain sense outgrowing it. Abstract, cosmopolitan universal human beings, out of whom an equally abstract universal humanity is composed, do not exist at all; in reality it is composed of nations, and nations are made up of tribes and families. One has only to translate the abstract language of science into the concrete language of reality for the whole problem of the relation between the universally human and the national or individual to be entirely recast: what now becomes problematic is no longer, as before, the existence of the national alongside the universally human, but, on the contrary, the possibility of the universally human within the national, of the universal within the concrete.

[¶5] Thus reality is concrete, and it is this concreteness that is lived through in experience. In experience, unless we arbitrarily restrict it and close our eyes to its testimony, we also find such primordial feelings as fatherhood, sonship and nationality. These are precisely, and above all, feelings or, if you will, instincts, and only in the moment of reflection are they apprehended as ideas. Here, as elsewhere, it is not consciousness that produces being or instinct, but being that produces consciousness. Nationality cannot be invented or created by a conscious, reflective ideology; it exists before that ideology as its foundation. Various explanations of the genesis of this feeling may be sought: for example, the prevailing evolutionary doctrine seeks to resolve the question by assuming imperceptible, infinitesimal changes and adaptations which, retained by “heredity”, subsequently produce the phenomenon to be explained. An explanation of this kind entirely destroys the substance of the question, dissolving it into evolution. However we explain the genesis of the human being in evolutionary terms, it nevertheless remains indisputable that human beings are born, that is, that there exists some transcensus inaccessible to scientific investigation, beyond which a new individuality, a new human being, suddenly comes into being. By seeking with all its might to efface this fateful boundary, evolution imagines that it resolves the question by abolishing it. Likewise with nationalities: although they arise historically from complex ethnographic mixtures, it nevertheless remains true that nationalities are born, that is, that there exists a historical boundary beyond which an ethnographic mixture becomes a nation with its own particular being, self-consciousness and instinct, and that this nation then leads an independent life and struggles to defend its existence and distinctive character. And the entire logical trick of the theory of “the descent of man from the ape” in its crude form amounts solely to the tacit abolition of precisely this ultimate boundary separating the human being from the ape, so that no explanation of the descent of man from the ape is given, but only an abolition of the difference between them, substituted for such an explanation.

[¶6] Thus nationality is recognised in the intuitive experience of reality, or in mystical experience, in which noumenal being manifests itself as that which is and which underlies its own phenomenology. But this phenomenology does not contain that which is itself: it only discloses, reveals it. The national spirit is not exhausted by any of its manifestations, does not merge with them and does not ossify within them. The national spirit, a living and creative principle, cannot finally be identified with any one of them, however valuable it may be. Here lies the condemnation of a wingless, exclusively conservative attitude towards nationality, for in it the living is in effect conceived as dead or deadened; but here too lies the condemnation of a frivolous and disrespectful attitude towards the past, for the same spiritual substance finds historical expression in it.

[¶7] The noumenal is recognised by us in mystical experience as that which is, but we come to know it only in its phenomenology. We can come to know ourselves in the national sense not by peering into our own bosoms or examining ourselves through a magnifying glass, but by studying national creativity as objectified in its individual products. This study is inductive, not intuitive, although without that original intuition it would be blind. Only a strong, immediate feeling can give it sight. That is why, in periods of excited, heightened national self-consciousness, eyes are opened to national phenomenology too: the people’s language, lyric poetry, epic, art, customs and so forth are studied, and everything that went unnoticed or undistinguished by a slumbering national self-consciousness comes alive, becomes colourful and vivid. The very turning of attention in this direction, its sharpening, the awakening of love for what is one’s own, already renders a service to national self-consciousness, for this is what nurtures it. Instinct passes into consciousness, and consciousness becomes self-knowledge. And from this new national creativity may also be born. Of course, one cannot be national to order or deliberately, for at its foundation nationality is a subconscious or, better, a superconscious instinct, and everything instinctive is unpremeditated and in this sense naïve (which is why all deliberate straining after a show of national character is so cloying and disagreeable); but national consciousness and feeling can be cultivated in a certain way and, of course, can also be perverted.

[¶8] The instinct of nationality, gaining sight from blindness and passing into consciousness, is experienced as a certain profound, mystical attraction towards one’s own people, as love, not in the impoverished, moralistic understanding of rationalistic ethics (as, for example, in Tolstoy), but in the mystical sense, as a kind of eros that gives the soul wings, as finding oneself in unity with others, an experience of sobornost, a real going-out from oneself, a particular transcensus. Of course, this natural unity or sobornost is fundamentally different from the one, truly catholic sobornost in the realm of grace, the Church; and insofar as any such natural sobornost (people, class, humanity, state) puts itself in the place of this catholic sobornost, it becomes a false sobornost, denying the higher and grace-filled in the name of the lower and elemental. In the order of sobornost too there exists a certain hierarchy, whose succession of degrees cannot be violated with impunity. Yet every overcoming of one’s individualistic separation from the whole, of one’s natural “Protestantism”, every feeling of sobornost, is already experienced by the human being as a certain erotic pathos, as love which grants the lover a particular clairvoyance concerning the beloved. The stronger the love, the stronger the faith: the one rests upon the other, and each sustains the other. Our fundamental and deepest feelings are not born of reasoning; they arise before reasoning, out of the dark depths of our personality. Proofs therefore have a secondary significance here. In them, love already felt seeks to become conscious of itself and to unfold more fully; but it would be mistaken to think that it is born because of them.

[¶9] In this way the idea of a national vocation is born and grows stronger. National messianism, quite apart from any definite content imparted to it, is above all a purely formal category into which national self-consciousness, love of one’s own people and faith in it inevitably take shape. Together with the Slavophiles one may see this content in an ecclesiastical-religious mission, in the manifestation to the world of a “Russian Christ”; together with Herzen and the Narodnik movement one may see it in the people’s socialist inclinations; finally, together with the revolutionaries of recent years one may see it in the particular “apocalyptic” character of Russian revolutionary fervour, thanks to which we shall accomplish the social revolution ahead of Europe. These opposed or different contents have a formal similarity: they are different expressions of a national mission. And this messianism appears in every age and among all peoples in periods of national upsurge; it is the general form of consciousness of national individuality.

[¶10] The national spirit expresses itself elementally in the various aspects of national creativity, but does not become fixed in any one of them in particular, as is rightly pointed out. Yet it is entirely mistaken to draw from this, as is sometimes done, the further conclusion that one ought not even to strive to become conscious of it. The striving to find the logos of national feeling, to understand the ideal of national vocation and bring it to the greatest possible clarity, is ineradicably rooted in this feeling itself, which, like every deep feeling, is not satisfied with instinctive self-consciousness but seeks its own logos. Granted that all attempts to define it are relative and change in history, this is no objection whatever to their legitimacy. The work of national self-consciousness proceeds unceasingly together with the historical growth of the nation, and in this growth it makes ever new attempts at self-definition. Something similar happens here to what we observe in the growth of personal self-consciousness.

[¶11] This self-definition is organically connected with the entire religious-philosophical worldview and represents one of its particular applications. Therefore, given a general difference between worldviews, which conditions differences of perception and evaluation, an identical national ideology cannot possibly result. Thus, for example, a religious thinker of the type of Solovyov, Khomyakov or Dostoevsky cannot, of course, have the same philosophy of Russian history as a rationalistic, irreligious member of the intelligentsia; what seems to one a mental aberration now outgrown will appear to the other as precisely the most valuable thing. Consequently, for all the elemental character of national feeling, there can scarcely be an identical philosophy of the nation; but at the same time one can scarcely abstain from such a philosophy on that ground alone.

[¶12] The ideal of national messianism demands expression in a certain ideal projection, and at the same time inevitably becomes a norm by which reality is judged. Nationality represents an ideal value not as ethnographic material, not through its outer shell, and it bodes ill for national self-consciousness if this is all that it amounts to, but as the bearer of the ideal recognition of a higher mission. Therefore the purest expression of the spirit of a nationality is found in its “heroes” (in Carlyle’s sense) or “saints” (in the religious sense). That is why every living people has its own saints and heroes and honours them as best it can. They are those righteous persons for whose sake the raw material of the ethnographic mass exists; in them the people’s mission is fulfilled. They themselves are the beautiful and delicate flower blossoming on the branches of a tree that has a thick, rough trunk and roots reaching deep into the earth. This thought, that a people’s very existence is justified only by its righteousness, its fidelity to its vocation and service, received its classical expression in the Jewish prophets; in them this opposition between the whole people as ethnographic material and the “holy remnant”, for whose sake God chose this people, assumes an exceptionally tragic character. The whole understanding of the external history of Jewry and its tragic destinies is concentrated in this opposition between the mass of the people, which has betrayed its vocation, and the “holy remnant” for which the immutable promises remain in force. A people is not only exalted by its high vocation, but is judged by it too. National faith stands in tragic conflict with sorrowful reality; it wavers, at times seems to die away, and revives again beneath the waves of different impressions. Our national faith in “Holy Rus’”, in that “holy remnant” for whose sake alone, in the highest sense, “Russia” exists, is now undergoing just such a trial by fire. National faith, as the Judaean prophets showed by their own example, not only does not authorise complacency and self-glorification, but obliges one to be exacting, implacable and stern; it impels one to self-flagellation and self-denunciation. Those whose heart bled with pain for the motherland were at the same time its sincere accusers. But only suffering love gives the right to this national self-chastisement; where it is absent, where it is not felt, reviling the motherland, mocking the mother, arising from frivolity or spiritual opportunism, evokes a burning feeling, always wavering between hope and despair, full of fear, anxiety and responsibility. This feeling not only does not conceal the unlovely reality that stands in such contradiction to the high mission, but underscores it all the more. “O unworthy of election, you are chosen”, Khomyakov once exclaimed. And this sense of unworthiness in an election which nevertheless remains irrevocable for the believing heart fills the soul with confusion, agitates and torments it. National feeling therefore harbours the terrible and ever-present danger of betraying catholicity, universal humanity, for its sake, just as a national church can easily separate itself from the universal Church, “one, conciliar and apostolic”. Nationality, although an organic form of human unity, is not the highest, for it not only unites but also divides. And national messianism, especially in an age of historical prosperity, passes all too easily into national exclusiveness, that is, into what is ordinarily called nationalism. The same history of Jewry gives us the classic example of such nationalism; but it can also be observed everywhere.

[¶13] National feeling must therefore always be kept on a rein, subjected to ascetic regulation, and never surrendered to unreservedly. The idea of election degenerates all too easily into a consciousness of special privilege, whereas it ought to engender a heightened sense of responsibility and intensify the demands one makes upon oneself. If national feeling develops properly, it ought to generate historical humility, despite faith in one’s vocation, just as the height of the Christian ideal and the sublimity of the promises do not puff up their true bearers but humble them. In a word, national asceticism must set a limit to national messianism, which otherwise turns into grotesque, repellent nationalism.

[¶14] However, proceeding further in this direction too, we encounter a peculiar difficulty. The point is that nationality must not only be humbled within oneself, but must at the same time be defended, for in this world everything develops through opposition and struggle. And patriotism is as obligatory as nationalism is reprehensible.

[¶15] Nations do not exist without a historical covering or a shell enclosing them. This shell is the state. Of course, there are nations without a state of their own; in this sense the nation is prior to the state. It is precisely the nation that gives birth to the state as an envelope necessary to itself. The national spirit seeks its embodiment in the state, according to Lassalle’s beautiful expression in his speech on Fichte (used with reference to the German people). It is supremely significant that states are created neither by an agreement among cosmopolitan universal human beings nor by class or group interests, but by self-asserting nationalities seeking an independent historical existence. States are national in their origin and in their core: this is a fact upon which thought inevitably dwells. Even those states which in their eventual form consist of many tribes and nationalities arose as the result of the state-forming activity of one people, which in this sense is the “dominant” or state-bearing people. One may go as far as one likes in recognising the political equality of different nations; their equal historical value within the state still cannot be established. In this sense Russia, of course, remains and will remain a Russian state, for all its many tribes, even with the introduction of the most extensive equality of national rights. The coexistence of many nations under a single state roof creates relations not only of solidarity but also of competition and struggle between them. In this struggle the feeling of nationality grows tense, and it is, of course, always in danger of passing into nationalism, although the latter’s outward manifestations may differ greatly in different historical epochs. The moral consciousness of modern humanity is ever less reconciled to the oppression of weaker nationalities by the dominant one; in this it sees above all a degradation of the latter and a flagrant injustice. Yet alongside these political relations there also exist moral relations between nationalities, and these do not always correspond in their distribution to the political ones. Owing to the rationalistic cosmopolitanism of our intelligentsia, which sets the tone in the press and in public opinion, a state of affairs has somehow arisen among us in which Russian nationality, by virtue of its odious political privilege, finds itself under a kind of moral boycott in the public consciousness; every manifestation of Russian national self-consciousness is met with distrust and hostility, and this boycott or self-boycott of Russian self-consciousness in Russian society reflects its spiritual weakness. The whole abnormality of this situation, sufficiently felt in immediate everyday experience, is vividly revealed at even the most delicate touch upon this question.

[¶16] The growth of individualism appears to bring with it a sharpening of national feeling too, and at the same time its differentiation. Alongside a self-consciousness embracing the whole people or the whole state, a local, tribal patriotism develops; the carpet of nationalities becomes ever more variegated and multicoloured, and their struggle assumes a more complex character, cultural as well as political. At any rate, future students of the state still have much work ahead of them to arrive at a satisfactory resolution of the political side of these questions, on which our remarkable political thinker Drahomanov was already reflecting with foresight in the last century.

[¶17] For all the struggle and competition among nationalities within a single state, the latter nevertheless remains their common home, and the consciousness of this common life grows stronger the greater their political self-activity. Thus, out of individual manifestations of national patriotism, a patriotism embracing the whole state is formed. The state or authority contains within itself an independent mystical principle: authority exists as the will to power and the capacity for obedience in the human being. The empirical state does not bring into existence, but merely reveals, this supra-empirical principle of authority as an ordinance of God, in the Apostle Paul’s formulation. It would therefore be superficial and unhistorical to regard the state as an instrument invented by someone and created for a particular purpose through a social contract, as it appeared to the rationalists of the eighteenth century. The state is within us, and only for this reason does it exist outside us; otherwise, without this presupposition, the existence of authority at all would be a wholly incomprehensible miracle, and the state would always be defeated by anarchy, or, more precisely, no state would ever have been born from anarchy. This does not, however, alter the fact that in the hierarchy of values the state stands below the nation, serving as its organ or instrument.

[¶18] Although there is no life outside the state, an independent national state is nevertheless not the only possible form of a nation’s existence, as the history of the Jewish people (and, in more recent times, of the Polish people too) shows all too convincingly. But an independent state represents an immense national value, and therefore patriotism inevitably extends to the state as well, to the political body of the people. The Russian state is dear to me not as a state, or as some particular form of organisation of the legal order in general (we know how great its imperfections are in this respect), but as a Russian state in which my nationality has its own home. And insofar as other nationalities under the Russian state’s dominion can feel at home within it, and insofar as they are historically connected with the Russian nationality, this same feeling is shared by them too, though in varying degrees. This feeling does not remain platonic: it expresses itself in concern for the state, for its external security and power and its internal prosperity. That is why patriotic feeling flares up with such force during a foreign war, and its absence can be explained either by deficiencies in civic consciousness or by the predominance of various rationalistic attitudes over instincts. Under normal conditions, the liberation movement with its programme of internal reforms also takes on a patriotic character. The national economy, which develops only within a national-state organisation, although in time it outgrows this form, is also bound up with healthy and strong statehood. One cannot but wish one’s country to develop successfully in economic terms (does this still need separate proof!) and grow stronger politically, so that the national-state body may be healthy and strong. And this signifies an entire political-economic programme of healthy national egoism, as one must say plainly and without dissembling. For if one reflects upon the character of contemporary political and economic struggle, upon its historical development from the age of mercantilism, that naïve yet also classical expression of national egoism, down to contemporary imperialism, one cannot fail to see here an intense worldwide struggle in which the laggard or the weak inevitably falls and is put out of action. Therefore national egoism, the feeling of national-state self-preservation (just as, in a narrower sphere, concern for one’s family’s welfare), inevitably becomes a guiding norm of politics, a political virtue. For duties and responsibility rest upon us both towards those close to us and towards our descendants.

[¶19] But here too the conflict between higher and lower norms sounds a warning to us. For in caring for the national body and serving national egoism, it is all too easy to overstep the boundary, and then politics becomes simply international brigandage, while the victorious nation itself degenerates into a predator. Consequently a corrective is needed here too, and here too national self-limitation, the asceticism of nationality, must always be on guard. Yet even apart from these conflicts, the task of creating or maintaining the might of the state and its economic power, though infinitely important in itself, is nevertheless not the foremost task. Nationality does not exist in history in order to grow fat and accumulate fat, threatening every rival with an armoured fist. If health is a good and care for it is necessary, one surely cannot make concern for preserving health the highest or sole norm of conduct. And if such aims become dominant, moral degeneration follows, and then degeneration of the state. Ideal aims recede into the distance, while aims that are anything but ideal obscure them in consciousness. Here too the conflict of spirit and “flesh” is reproduced on the scale of nation and state.

[¶20] Alongside the national and state unity of human beings stands their economic grouping, based on “class” interests. There is a widespread opinion that places classes above the nation. “Proletarians have no fatherland”, “proletarians of all countries, unite”: who is unfamiliar with these slogans nowadays? One must not understate the strength of class solidarity and the unifying effect of common economic interests and struggle on this basis. And yet, for all that, nationality is stronger than class feeling, and in reality, despite all proletarian ideology, workers are nevertheless more intimately bound to employers of their own people than to foreign proletarians, as becomes apparent in the event of an international conflict. Quite apart from the fact that economic life too proceeds within the framework of the national state (pointing out this connection is Fr. List’s immortal contribution), the classes themselves also exist within the nation, without cutting it into pieces. The latter, if possible at all, is only a pathological case. Economic groupings are rooted in the changing external conditions of life, in historical empirical reality; nationality, however, is noumenal, its roots laid deeper than this empirical foundation. People are not born proletarians or capitalists but become them; they can move up or down the social ladder, whereas people are born sons of a particular people, not made so. There exists a national culture, national creativity and a national language, but the world has not yet seen a class culture. The nerves of national solidarity penetrate the armour of class separation. If this is not realised under ordinary conditions of life, it is only for the same reason that a low hill can, at close range, conceal a high mountain, which becomes visible as soon as one steps a few paces back from it. Class is an external relation between people which can engender common tactics and determine conduct in accordance with the norm of class interest, but it does not unite people inwardly, as the family or nationality does. Only the nation stands between the individual and humanity, and we participate in humanity’s common cultural work as members of the nation.

> Russian: III

[¶22] Nationality manifests itself in cultural creativity. Culture should not, of course, be identified with modern education, for cultural creativity is more primordial and older than education. The most powerful instrument of culture, in which the soul of a nationality is imprinted, is language (it is no accident that in Slavonic “language” directly signifies a people, nor is it without reason that Fichte, in his Addresses to the German Nation, considers the purity and primordial character of language to be the fundamental mark of nationality). In language we possess an inexhaustible treasury of cultural possibilities, and at the same time both a reflection and a creation of the people’s soul. That is why, in loving one’s people, one cannot but love above all one’s own language. That is why, for all his scepticism and Westernism, such a master of the Russian language as Turgenev realised so clearly that “the great Russian language can be given only to a great people”. In the early stages of history the people’s faith proves to be as national as its language, something also reflected in popular usage: Christians or Orthodox as a synonym for Russians. Non-Christian, natural religions arise in the dark depths of the religious instinct exclusively as national religions. They express the religious self-consciousness of an entire people. The national character of religions is, of course, common knowledge; nevertheless, it seems to us that this connection between religion and nationality is still insufficiently appreciated. The phenomena of religious syncretism and the supposed migration of religious beliefs, sought out by modern scholarship with such enthusiasm and even feverish eagerness, by no means negate this fact; indeed, one might rather say of them that the exceptions only confirm the general rule. Moreover, even unquestionable, and not merely supposed, instances of religious syncretism presuppose not at all a mechanical borrowing of a novelty from abroad, but a certain assimilation, an organic process which modern historians do not sufficiently take into account. From the standpoint of the realist understanding of the nation to which we adhere, these national religions represent stages of natural revelation, contacts with the divine world, whose rays are refracted through the prism of the national soul and its distinctive perceptions. And the theology of these religions, or their mythology, is the symbolic expression of these distinctive experiences and revelations. Of course, if one sees in it only mythologemes or fables, the phenomena of religious syncretism receive a very simple explanation: it amounts almost to a statement of literary borrowings and influences. But if one rejects this wholly unscientific and at the same time religious understanding of the nature of natural (or “pagan”) religions, and sees in them above all a certain religious experience and a systematisation of these experiences, then the problem of religious syncretism acquires an entirely different character, and an independent question comes to the fore: the internal conditions of this appropriation or assimilation by one religion of elements of another. There is only one religion above nations, truly catholic, that of the Incarnate Word, and it therefore addresses “all tongues”. It contains the revelation of absolute truth and is therefore free of national limitation. Yet even this religion, though above nations in its content, is not without nationality in the manner of its appropriation. It addresses the person, whatever nation that person belongs to, with one and the same good news, thereby creating a supranational universal human being. But this human being remains a living, concrete person, clothed in national-historical flesh and blood. Each hears the one glad tidings in his own way, translated into the language of his national soul, and responds to it likewise in his own way. The universal preaching of the Gospel does not turn the human being into an abstract, depersonalised creature; each soul vibrates in its own way in response to the call of the Risen One. We therefore observe in history that Christianity too is received and realised in life nationally; a particular national character of the local churches is established, and very early, and this difference subsequently leads to the great schism between the Eastern and Western Church. We by no means wish to reduce differences of confession (especially in such fundamental oppositions as that between ecclesial Christianity and Protestantism) wholly to differences between national types, all the more since different confessions can also be observed within a single people (the Germans), though admittedly only by way of exception. But there is no doubt that they nevertheless stand in a certain correspondence to national characters. Even within one and the same confession these national traits are felt. The Slavophile expression “Russian Christ” can therefore be understood, among other things, as a statement of the fact that different nationalities, as genuinely distinct from one another, each receive Christ in their own way and are changed by this reception. In this sense one can speak, quite seriously and without a shadow of blasphemy, not only of a Russian Christ, but also of a Greek, an Italian and a German Christ, just as one speaks of national saints. Of course, immediately and inwardly, by the character of our own religious experience, it is precisely our Russian Christ, the Christ of St Seraphim and St Sergius, who is closer and more accessible to us Russians than the Christ of Bernard of Clairvaux or Catherine of Siena or even Francis of Assisi. We by no means thereby turn religion into an attribute of nationality; rather, on the contrary, nationality here becomes an attribute of religion, or, more precisely, the individual form in which universal truth is received, its receptacle. And it is precisely this capacity for an entirely distinctive reception of divine fullness, the drawing forth of one’s own particular ray from the divine pleroma, that appears to the religious outlook to be the most valuable and important element in the nature of nationality. “Holy Rus’” is that aspect of the soul of the Russian people through which it receives Christ and the Church and which, in relation to the entire life of the people, is a light shining in darkness.

[¶23] The opposition frequently drawn between the national and the universally human is profoundly mistaken. The universally human can have a twofold character: abstractly human, impersonal and outside nationality, or concretely human, individual and national. In the first sense, every technical invention put into general circulation, every scientific truth once established and made common property, will be universally human. Both the techniques of life, what is called external culture, and theoretical and applied science alike belong to this type: they are the impersonal, anonymous possession of a single humanity, the many-armed Briareus, which in its collective being produces and develops both this “technology” and this “science”. Here nationality manifests itself comparatively weakly, as a degree of general giftedness or of special abilities, while cultural age, the stage of historical development, has far greater significance. In the second sense we attain the universally human through the fullest possible disclosure of our individuality, personal or national: when Nietzsche spits out clotted lumps of blood and bile and lays bare his tormented soul, when Goethe creates a work national in language and spirit to the very highest degree, such as Faust, we do not doubt that this is a possession of universal humanity which could, at the same time, have been born only from the depths of an individual and national spirit. It is beyond doubt that neither Faust nor a work like it will ever be written in Esperanto. Fortunately, the replacement of the concrete by an abstract homunculus is not accomplished so easily, and homunculism triumphs chiefly in the sphere of external culture, the techniques of life. All cultural creativity that creates spiritual values, however, is concrete and national. This proposition may at present be regarded as generally acknowledged with regard to art, whose mystical roots plainly descend into the mother earth and draw nourishment directly from her sap. Matters are far more complex and controversial with that activity of the human spirit which belongs to both spheres, that is, both the abstractly human and the concretely human. We mean philosophy. There are unquestionably branches or problems of philosophy that pass entirely into the domain of science, for example logic, methodology and particular problems of the theory of knowledge (except, however, the fundamental and central problem of the nature of knowledge and of truth). Here only differences of cultural age matter, and younger nations naturally enter into a relation of apprenticeship to older ones. In this sense one must, of course, frankly acknowledge, indeed, so far as I know, no one has ever denied it, that young Russian philosophy has to learn from the more mature philosophy of the West, and should generally join the movement of world philosophical thought. But are the tasks of philosophical thought exhausted by this? The answer to this question will inevitably reveal that fundamental difference between philosophical worldviews, realist and idealist, of which we spoke at the beginning. For idealistic illusionism (“transcendentalism”), the task of philosophy is exhausted by the logical elaboration of the ultimate concepts of experience and by the problems of the theory of knowledge. In this sense philosophy is declared a science and, of course, as such it is devoid of particular national traits. But philosophy also has other, creative tasks which bring it close to religion and art. It strives to construct an integral worldview founded upon a distinctive feeling for the world. It too is nourished by the mystical roots of being, and a qualitatively determinate national individuality inevitably manifests itself in its creativity. This will find expression in the predominance of favourite problems and of particular ways of approaching them, in the particular direction of philosophical interest. Borrowing the language of Marxism, one may say that philosophy is the ideology of metaphysical being, which determines philosophical consciousness. Of course, all significant works of national philosophical thought inevitably become a possession of universal humanity, but this does not prevent Plato or Plotinus from remaining genuine Greeks, or Kant (or even Rickert) a typical German, just as James remains American from head to foot. Given such an understanding of the tasks and nature of philosophy, it is entirely appropriate to speak of Russian philosophy too, even though it is still very young in comparison with European philosophy, and lovingly to seek out and inwardly recognise its national traits in its first steps and early beginnings. This by no means signifies that there is no single philosophical truth. But it is of a different nature from scientific truth: it is not abstract but concrete, and may be accessible to knowledge in different aspects. One cannot deny the possibility that this loving concentration of attention upon what is one’s own will divert or weaken attention to the work of Western thought at a time when schooling overseas is still so necessary; but the other fear is no less natural, that the pupils of that school will turn into “perpetual students”, unwilling or already unable to return spiritually to their motherland. The strength of Western culture and the evident seniority of its age dispose us so greatly towards an inward capitulation before it that for the present one has to struggle more against the inclination towards this capitulation than against cultural nationalism. And therefore, turning our thoughts to the old dispute between Slavophiles and Westernisers, we recall with involuntary gratitude, as a particular service of the Slavophiles to Russian culture, precisely their feat of national faith. Our generation ought to inherit their broad and thorough philosophical education, but with the purpose of using it to equip ourselves to continue their own national-cultural work.

[¶24] To this day our society has failed to attain spiritual equilibrium in its sense of national identity. It still suffers from the rationalistic cosmopolitanism of its intelligentsia and from the militant nationalism of ruling circles and leading parties. In questions of culture, where it is high time to be imbued with a striving for national self-definition and self-consciousness, we make do with cosmopolitan or Westernising attitudes; conversely, in questions of statehood and politics, where it has long been time to embark upon the path of freedom and equality of nationalities, we have once again taken the path of reactionary nationalism (as is shown both by the Finnish bill and by the whole of recent policy towards Poland). Yet the path imperiously pointed out to us by history ought to lead us towards an upsurge of cultural patriotism and a weakening of political nationalism. Russian nationality will, of course, remain, and ought to remain, the state-bearing nationality in the Russian state, but let this be the position of the first among politically equal and free nationalities, united by a common statehood, a common home. Nationalism among us kills patriotism and indirectly sustains cosmopolitanism, while militant nationalism in turn finds its spiritual support in this cosmopolitanism. A vicious circle results.

[¶25] Recently, however, some improvement in this respect has begun to emerge. National self-consciousness seems to be beginning to awaken in educated society. It has to make its way through prejudices fostered by our official nationalism and by cosmopolitan or Westernising preconceptions; the principal difficulty, however, still remains the weakness of our cultural tradition. All the more, then, must we cherish our cultural shoots, weak though they may be, because they are our own; for only by sincerely loving what is our own and striving to be faithful to it can we work fruitfully towards the creation of a national culture and, insofar as our strength permits, prepare the formulation of those high tasks to which, we believe, our great people is called.
