[¶0] II. CHURCH AND CULTURE

> Russian: II.

[¶1] Anyone accustomed to reflecting upon the surrounding reality and listening to the authentic voice of life, to its hidden, intimate whisper, usually drowned out for the inattentive ear by the noise and clamour of the public square, will hardly find it unexpected or disputable to be told that something has long been amiss in the spiritual life of modern humanity, that some crisis is gathering, perhaps a foretoken of a coming turning point. This crisis has been prepared by the whole of modern history. Since the end of the Middle Ages, the spiritual life of humanity, which has produced unprecedented marvels of technology and material culture generally, developed scientific knowledge to an unprecedented degree, especially the exact sciences, displayed an unprecedented breadth of social creativity, sharpened philosophical thought to extraordinary acuteness and subtlety, and created mighty art in its various branches, has developed entirely under the sign of a secular, non-religious and even anti-religious principle of life, has asserted a one-sidedly human, anti-divine principle, and has cultivated the precepts of one-sided or abstract humanism. In this sense, the whole of the so-called modern age must be given the name bestowed upon only one of its early epochs: the age of humanism, in the purely naturalistic, pagan sense, in the sense of the rebellion of humanity, now conscious of its powers, against the medieval ascetic worldview, mistakenly confused with true, that is, universal Christianity, and against medieval inquisitorial clericalism, mistakenly taken for the Church of Christ. (For our homeland this age of humanism begins only in the nineteenth century, especially in its second half, partly as a natural reflection of Western humanism, and partly as an inevitable protest against Filaret’s catechism, taken as a complete and exact account of Christian teaching, and against Pobedonostsev’s policing clericalism, confused with the true life of the Church.) Humanity has broken with patriarchal tutelage and has left for ever the oppressive, though majestic, vaults of medieval Gothic. The son takes his inheritance and leaves his father’s house, setting off for ‘a far country’ to live in freedom.

[¶2] And now freedom has been tried, spiritual maturity acquired through experience has been attained, but the inheritance carried away from home is already running out; the time of feeding on bitter pods and of spiritual hunger is beginning, a time when the abandoned father’s house involuntarily comes to mind. The modern prodigal son is only just beginning, quietly, in the depths of his soul, to sigh for his forsaken homeland, and perhaps the time is still far off when he will accomplish the feat of spiritual self-renunciation, overcome his strained self-assertion and say: ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before Thee.’

[¶3] Yet even now it is becoming indisputable that modern humanity’s spiritual nourishment consists not of the sumptuous dishes it had expected, but of bitter and heavy pods, which merely deceive hunger rather than satisfying it. ‘The despondency of nations and perplexity’: such, for the time being, is the final result of modern culture, imperceptibly deposited in intimate life, in the deepest depths of universal human consciousness. Just take stock of those highest and ultimate values which our complacent, though bewildered, age is forever proposing to revalue. Are these not bitter pods: the impotence of modern philosophical thought, which has retreated into formal scholastic work; or the helpless intellectual and moral neurasthenia of its more demanding representatives, such as Nietzsche, with sceptical adogmatism elevated into a dogma and amoralism turned into a system of morals; or, finally, Renan’s rollicking, boisterous scepticism, with an aesthetic and religious garnish and a boulevard novel in place of the Gospel. Likewise, modern science has sharpened humanity’s spiritual vision extraordinarily in everything that concerns the outer rind of phenomena, but has not lifted by a single inch the veil of Isis that conceals their nature. Present-day technology has made the human being a remarkable artisan, sharpened and refined the working tool, but the human being who lives within this artisan still stands with an outstretched hand. Modern art, for all the richness and splendour of new forms of artistic technique, sinks into dead naturalism or self-destructive tendentiousness; mystical in its very essence, it suffers above all from the age’s lack of religious grounding. The whole of modern culture, grown into a luxuriant and mighty tree, is beginning to wither and fade, deprived of the deep roots of religious and mystical nourishment. The greatest bitterness has fallen to modern humanity to taste in its mutual relations. The age of humanism put forward the great Christian precepts, the old paternal inheritance, the ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity, but put them forward as its own creation and property, tearing the beautiful flower from its parent stem. To embody this ideal, it mobilised the greatest social forces, uniting an entire international army of socialism, which is waging a systematic and successful war for these ideals. New and ever more perfect forms of association and external union between people are being created, the walls of the edifice of socialism are being erected on the roof, and the time is not particularly far off when socialism’s victory in principle will become, and is already becoming, an accomplished fact, and when the capitalist world will collapse, giving way to a socialist one. But here is the fateful and terrible question already arising in human consciousness: will the fruits of this victory too prove to be merely bitter pods; will socialism’s outward victory create genuinely human solidarity?

[¶4] Are people becoming closer to one another; is not only equality but also fraternity being established among them; is there more love on earth; are people being more closely united by an inner bond, even those who belong to the same union or the same party and set themselves the task of benefiting humanity through external reforms? We think that a sincere and conscientious answer to this question cannot be affirmative. Our epoch is characterised not by a drawing together of people, however much they may be united outwardly, but by separation and isolation; some glass wall, transparent yet palpable, divides human hearts. Not solidarity but spiritual solitude; not fraternity but murderous, hopeless individualism; and not equality founded upon the inner humility of individuals, but conceit and the thirst for power (Wille zur Macht!): such is humanity’s true spiritual condition.

[¶5] Read the work of genius by one of the subtlest psychologists of modern times, Maupassant, entitled ‘Solitude’ (Solitude): here is the confession of the modern soul. And when people who have isolated themselves (to use Dostoevsky’s expression), who are quite capable of holy hatred, and alongside it unholy hatred, but have lost any notion of what holy love is, speak of a future ‘paradise on earth’ that will come of itself once capitalism has been abolished, one does not know which should astonish one more: their naïvety or their spiritual blindness. The greatest spiritual revolution must take place; people must recover the lost secret of a union that is not merely external and mechanical, but also inward and mystical, not merely in shared hatred or interest, but also in shared love, if peace on earth and goodwill among people are truly to reign. Otherwise, for all their striving towards union, people will merely knock their heads against one another (to use the same Maupassant’s expression); they will achieve a well-ordered anthill in which, in the absence of social struggle, still greater emptiness and bewilderment will reign, alongside complacent philistinism, but despondency and present-day demonic or neurasthenic individualism will not have been overcome. External union for particular ends is comparatively easily established by compulsory or even voluntary discipline, a kind of socialist drill; yet even in the realm of socialism and economic collectivism, this does nothing to remove the horrors of solitude and disunion. The genuine union of people can only be mystical, religious, and insofar as people strive to attain it outside religion, it is an entirely unattainable goal. One cannot deny the usefulness and significance of modern humanists’ noble efforts to destroy all the external causes of evil and enmity, but they are profoundly mistaken if they think that removing external obstacles provides a positive solution to the question of liberty and equality. An economic union, a socialist state, can remove the external barriers that exist between people and grossly violate justice, but it lacks the creative power to unite that belongs only to the religious and mystical union of faith and love founded upon real mystical unity, that is, the Church. Only the Church can set itself, and is capable of resolving, the task that socialism undertakes, the task of uniting and organising humanity on the basis of the grace-given gifts bestowed by the Saviour, on the basis of love for Him that is at once personal and shared. Those, however, who reject in advance religio, that is, the only real inner bond between people, established by their common bond with Christ, build their edifice upon sand, failing to understand the true nature of human fellowship.

[¶6] The prodigal son’s departure from his father’s house in world history, the age of humanism, during which humanity tests its powers and makes a desperate attempt to establish itself and live without God, has its own meaning and its own necessity. In the building of the Kingdom of God, which is a divine-human process founded upon humanity’s own active appropriation of the divine content of life, the free development of the purely human element, a trial of its powers away from home, is necessary; therefore the humanistic, non-religious, even anti-religious period of historical creative work is necessary to the divine-human undertaking. While representing an obvious one-sidedness and revealing its ultimate impotence, it nevertheless realises a dialectical moment of development, a religious antithesis leading to a higher synthesis.

[¶7] But not all humanity left the father’s house: the elder brother remained there, was with the father the whole time, and greeted his returning brother with such jealous ill will. What happened to him; what happened to the Church in this humanistic age outside the Church and even opposed to it? It cannot be denied that during this time it took on certain features of the elder brother’s spiritual character as depicted in the Gospel story. Alongside the faithfulness and strictness of its service, it also acquired an arrogantly ill-disposed and pharisaically deadening attitude towards the younger brother, who, although he had ‘sinned against heaven and before his father’ during his wanderings, had preserved an open, living soul.

[¶8] Will the two brothers be reconciled inwardly and come to understand each other? That is the great and fateful question which is now becoming history.

[¶9] The splitting of life into ‘secular’ and ecclesial, modern culture’s estrangement from the Church and from religion, and in part its opposition to the Church and to religion, and the modern Church’s estrangement from culture, and in part its opposition to culture, bring discord and double-entry bookkeeping even into the souls of those who recognise the entire historical relativity and inner abnormality of this division. To create a genuinely Christian, ecclesial culture and awaken life within the Church’s enclosure, to overcome the opposition between the ecclesial and the secular: such is the historical task for the spiritual creativity of the modern Church and modern humanity.

[¶10] The thought just expressed will probably offend many Church people of the old school. They conceive of the Church as the perfect fullness of grace-given gifts, which need only be preserved in accordance with tradition, and therefore, in their opinion, talk of new creative work is out of place. Against this view of the Church, which ascribes to it only protective functions, the conservatism of tradition, we set the ideal of a Church that creates, grows and develops. As a divine-human institution, it has an unchanging mystical foundation in the person of its Divine Head and, of course, the Church’s dogmatic teaching about Him, and a human element that develops historically within the bounds of space and time. The interaction between the mystical foundation and the human element conditions the historical progress of the Church, called to bring historical humanity into the sphere of the Kingdom of God. It would therefore be equally mistaken to limit the sphere of the Church’s influence, and consequently of Church life or, more precisely, life in the Church, to any single narrow sphere, for example, worship or piety within the church building. Owing to this unwarranted narrowing of the concept of the Church, habitual usage generally understands it only as Church–temple, rather than as Church–humanity, Church–culture, Church–social life; and this narrowing of the sphere of the Church’s influence and life is the chief cause, and at the same time a symptom, of its historical weakness at the present moment. In principle, religion, and consequently the Church as the sphere of religious life, ought to be everything, extending to every sphere of believers’ lives. There ought to be nothing ‘secular’ in principle, no neutral zone that is religiously indifferent, that has no religious coefficient of one kind or another. The spiritual activity of historical humanity, that is, culture, which takes material form both in external material objects and in the products of spiritual creativity, must likewise grow upon the spiritual soil of the Church, within the Church’s enclosure; every aspect of life must be sanctified by it, in intimate communion with it. This requirement was fulfilled to a certain extent in the Middle Ages, but at the price of spiritual despotism, whose time has passed for ever. For its denial of the rights of free creative work, the medieval Church paid, on the one hand, through the humanistic secession of its most active part, and, on the other, through its own impoverishment. The quenching of the spirit and the hostile opposition of the secular and ecclesial elements resulted in the degeneration and distortion of Church life and activity beyond the church building as well. The Church organisation became a conservative and even reactionary force in history rather than a creative one, finding itself in a natural and lamentable alliance with dark historical forces, and thereby degrading itself to a role wholly unworthy of its dignity. But if the Church organisation is not to remain for ever a fortress of obscurantism and reaction, a refuge only for the weary and the backward, rather than for workers and men, then alongside common prayer there must of necessity begin a common, conciliar life in the Church, a life full of spiritual gifts, with the breadth and range that the modern human being cannot and ought not to renounce, even if they wished to; and consequently cultural creative work must begin as well. The Church’s enclosure must contain not only a home for invalids and an almshouse, for which room has hitherto been found within it, but also a workshop, a scholar’s study and an artist’s studio. Church life must be reborn, on the basis of free fellowship and conciliar creative work rather than an inquisitorial regime, so that to take part in the creative work of culture one need not depart for ‘a far country’, beyond conciliar life and fellowship in the Church.

[¶11] Thus Christian culture, the Church’s creative work directed ad extra, is the world-historical task set before our age. It is not for us to ask to what extent this task can be accomplished: the Will on High will decide that for us. We need only determine whether the task really exists, and if it does, we must work towards its fulfilment as far as our powers allow.

[¶12] It is hard to imagine how much our whole life would change, what rainbow colours would adorn it, how light and gracious it would become, if the authentic flame of Christian creativity and inspiration were to blaze up, if that fullness of life for which the modern human being thirsts were restored in the Church. Science would come inwardly to life; it would cease to torment us with lifeless specialisation devoid of ideas and severed from the whole, or with the torments of Faust, the consequence of the empty and absurd pretension to put the part in place of the whole, to replace both philosophy and religion with science alone. How many idle questions imposed upon it by this inappropriate function, and how many associated idle theories diverting so much intellectual energy, would fall away as a result of this liberation of science from the grip of positivism and materialism, this restoration of its connection with religious roots. And philosophy, fertilised by religion, would gain the strength to emerge from the quagmire of impotent scepticism and sterility in which it now finds itself. One of two things: either European philosophy has already completed its cycle of development and spoken its last word, as Vl. Solovyov thought in the last years of his life, or its rebirth can come about only upon the ground of a new deepening of religious and mystical life. Only on this condition can the joy of metaphysical creativity be experienced again, the work of the great thinkers find new successors, and creative reason, the Logos, vanquish the ‘abstract principles’ of modern philosophy and pronounce judgement upon them.

[¶13] Christian art must have still greater importance. For perhaps it is precisely in the direction of art that new revelations lie, since the saying that ‘beauty will save the world’ is true, and so is the saying that ‘perfect art, in its ultimate task, must embody the absolute ideal not in imagination alone, but also in reality: it must spiritualise, transubstantiate our actual life’. But of course this task not only exceeds the powers of present-day art; it simply does not even enter its consciousness, dominated as it is by wingless naturalism, utilitarian tendentiousness or impotent aestheticism. New spheres of action and new tasks for art are within the powers only of a new, religious art, the mystery play of the future. If this Christian, ecclesial social life were at last created, then socialism too would lose the lifeless class character it now has, tied to a narrow class basis; it would become a living embodiment of universal Gospel love and cease to be coupled with the spiritual devastation that the narrowness of its preaching now brings into the hearts of its adherents. Political and social life as a whole would lose that tedious, prosaic tinge, that peculiar winglessness felt especially in the West, and would acquire an inspired and prophetic character. And all culture, illumined by an inner light, would prove permeable to light, full of light and life. This task exceeds not only the powers but also the understanding of a single generation; it is an ideal, not a practical programme. But this ideal gives quite definite guidance, creates corresponding dispositions and feelings, and compels us to struggle against dispositions, feelings and opinions that contradict it. What contradicts it is that spirit of detachment which has simply established itself in the modern Church’s consciousness, and which feeds upon the complacent but groundless opinion that in ‘culture’ the dark, satanic principle holds absolute sway. Yet there life gushes forth which could find no room within the Church’s enclosure; there the experience of world history and of humanity as a whole accumulates, experience necessary for the Church’s consciousness too. For even from a strictly dogmatic point of view, so-called ‘natural’ revelation is admissible; and who will set bounds and limits to it, who will say that it has no place in present-day ‘secular’ culture? We must therefore open our hearts to the ‘secular’ world lovingly, without arrogance but with Christian humility; and perhaps then the elder brother too, together with the Father, will live to see the joyful day when he beholds that the prodigal son was dead and has come to life, was lost and has been found. On both sides mutual guilt must be acknowledged and a spiritual sacrifice offered, and then, naturally, mutual attraction will arise and the living, creative, truly militant Church, seeking the city to come, will be reconstituted. ‘Behold, I stand at the doors and knock…’

[¶14] The broadening of the Church’s self-consciousness is necessary also for the completion of the tragedy of world history, for the definitive disclosure of the forces of good and evil and of the boundary dividing them. So long as the extensive religiously neutral zone of ‘secular’ culture exists, the final decisive clash between good and evil has not ripened for the final harvest, since it cannot be recognised in all its breadth and irreconcilability. ‘Nothing in the universe must remain ambiguous’ (Schelling). Only when light is brought into regions hitherto unillumined will the light-permeable points be revealed. While the woman clothed in the sun hides in the wilderness, the full opposition has not yet been disclosed between the bride of Christ, awaiting the Bridegroom in her wedding attire, and the woman sitting on a scarlet bed, clothed in purple and scarlet, with a name upon her forehead: mystery, Babylon the great, mother of harlots and abominations of the earth (Apocalypse 17:5).

[¶15] May this flame of religious inspiration blaze up all the sooner, illumining the world and culture, and then humanity will ascend to the highest, final stage of world-historical and religious consciousness. Yes, come, Lord Jesus!
