[¶0] “One can make politics into religion instinctively, but here what is at issue is the highest consciously recognized (letztem ausgesprochenen) ground, the official principle. This principle is nothing other than, expressed negatively, atheism, that is, the elimination of a god distinct from man.”

[¶1] Words remarkably characteristic of Feuerbach, drawing aside the misty philosophical veil and revealing both the chief driving force of his thought and his proud dream. That driving force is atheism, more precisely anti-Christianity; the dream is to begin a new era, create a new religion, turn people from “theologians into anthropologists, from theophiles into philanthropists, from candidates for the next world into students of this world, from religious and political valets of heavenly and earthly monarchy and aristocracy into conscious, free citizens of the earth.”

[¶2] There is no god but man, and Feuerbach is his prophet. No small matter is at issue, for if Feuerbach’s own view is correct, that historical periods differ from one another through religious upheavals, then Feuerbach wanted to inaugurate a new era in history and, in the seclusion of his Bruckberg, forge a spiritual lever with which humanity could be overturned and set upon a new path.

[¶3] It is remarkable how successfully Feuerbach, in the words quoted, catered to the spirit of the age. Nothing could have been said more in keeping with the contemporary mood, more pleasing to the guile of the prince of this world, than this summons to find religion in politics, to make politics into religion. For throughout the nineteenth century and down to our own day, and ever more rapidly as time goes on, the number of people who dispense with otherworldly ideals and have transferred them entirely here, into “the kingdom of this world,” is growing; and in fact, for these people politics has become religion. The numerous regiments of materialist socialism, continually multiplying in various countries, live by this religion. This confirms, among other things, the justice of our introductory remarks on the extent to which Feuerbach expresses in his teaching the soul of modern materialist socialism, its religion, and how deeply he penetrates into its most hidden and intimate core.

[¶4] Once the species is declared to be the absolute and the deity, an inevitable and necessary conclusion follows: “das Maass der Gattung ist das absolute Maass, Gesetz und Kriterium der Menschheit,” that is, “the measure of the species is the absolute measure, law, and criterion of humanity.” In the species are all the law and all the prophets.

[¶5] Although Feuerbach only briefly and incompletely outlines the dogmatics of the religion of the species, we shall nevertheless indicate some of its fundamental dogmas, in view of their characteristic importance for the whole conception and the possible direction of its further development.

[¶6] Believers see in the deity the living embodiment of truth, which is revealed in humanity’s historical knowledge, in the development of scientific and philosophical thought, gradually drawing nearer to human consciousness. They see in it, further, the embodiment of absolute moral perfection, the living ideal of which it is said: “Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Finally, they see in it the source of perfect beauty, diffused throughout the world and destined in its triumph to “save the world.” The deity is conceived as the triunity of truth, goodness, and beauty. Feuerbach’s religion of the species does not abolish this triunity, but refers it to its own deity, makes these determinations predicates of the species, which plays the role of the absolute. (It should be noted, however, that Feuerbach himself did not concern himself with questions of aesthetics, but it is not difficult to imagine the direction in which aesthetics might have been developed in general accordance with his fundamental ideas.)

[¶7] Truth, according to Feuerbach, is a function of the species and is established by species-consciousness.

[¶8] “Only in community, only out of relations between people, do ideas arise. Not alone, but only together, do people arrive at concepts, at knowledge in general. Two people are necessary for the birth of spiritual man just as for that of physical man: the community of man with man is the first principle and criterion of truth and universality. Even my certainty of the existence of other things besides myself is mediated for me by certainty of the existence of another human being besides myself. What I alone see, I doubt; only what another sees too is certain.” “Truth does not exist in thinking, in knowing on one’s own account (für sich selbst). Truth is only the totality of human life and being.” “What is true is that in which another agrees with me: agreement (Uebereinstimmung) is the first mark of truth, but only because the species is the ultimate measure (Maas) of truth.… What is in accordance with the being of the species is true; what contradicts it is false. No other law of truth exists.”

[¶9] Such is Feuerbach’s fundamental epistemological thesis, which today, complicated by Kantianism and Darwinism, expresses Simmel’s fundamental epistemological idea (and in part Riehl’s). Feuerbach himself, however, recoils from the conclusions that follow from a straightforward and resolute application of this thesis, according to which it is not Socrates but his judge who is right, not Copernicus but the tribunal that tried him; in general, not the innovator and revolutionary of thought, but the inert and ignorant crowd. “The other,” Feuerbach continues, “is in relation to me the representative of the species, the substitute for others in the plural; it is precisely his judgment that may have greater significance for me than the judgment of a numberless crowd.” Thus Feuerbach slips away from his own demagogic epistemology; and since elsewhere Feuerbach remarks that the individual represents the species for himself, Feuerbach’s thesis loses all real significance. Having freed himself of all the unpleasant conclusions of his teaching, he passes from defense to attack: “In short, there exists a qualitative, critical distinction between people, but Christianity effaces these qualitative distinctions.” Whether Christianity is guilty or innocent of this effacement, under such an interpretation the religion of the species, of humanity, imperceptibly passes into the religion of the individual-superman, and Feuerbach is transfigured into Nietzsche, who, generally speaking, represents Feuerbach’s antipode precisely on this point.

[¶10] In the species there is not only truth but goodness as well. “The other is my objective conscience: he reproaches me for my shortcomings even if he does not say so to me directly; he is my personified feeling of shame. Consciousness of moral law, right, purposiveness, even truth, is tied to the consciousness of others.”

[¶11] For the species as absolute, however, it is not enough to be “objective conscience,” that is, a subjective stimulus to goodness; this proposition by itself is not particularly characteristic of the religion of humanity. It must also be objective goodness, the embodiment of actually existing goodness. If it is the absolute, then let it be the absolute: holiness, consequently, also belongs to it as an inalienable attribute. A sum consists of all its terms, and the species of all individuals; consequently I, too, participate in collective holiness, with all the indelible stains known to my conscience, as do Messalina, Caligula, Borgia, and Chekhov’s “tedious,” drab people.… Behold your god: fall prostrate and pray, pray to yourself, pray to Messalina, pray to “Ionych.” This is the fateful question for Feuerbach and for every religion of humanity: what is to be done with all the weakness and all the depravity of the new god, which in the Christian religion are connected with the fundamental human Fall, with original sin and, further, with the dogma of redemption? I ask for your attention now: we shall see how Feuerbach extricates himself from the difficulty. This argument seems to me the most important, the most decisive, and the most consequential in all Feuerbach’s writings, in his entire worldview, and moreover one that is wholly impossible to remove from it. Whoever accepts it will readily accept the rest of the dogmatics of the religion of humanity; whoever rejects this one point accepts nothing. Feuerbach is speaking precisely of the dogma of original sin, and in criticizing this dogma he says the following:

[¶12] “Here there is a complete absence of the objective view, of the consciousness that you belong to the perfection of the I, that only in their totality do people constitute man, that only together are they what man ought to be, exist as he ought to exist. All people are sinners, I concede this, but they do not all sin in the same way; on the contrary, there is a very great, indeed essential, difference. One person is inclined to lie, another is not: he will sacrifice his life sooner than break his word or lie; a third has a tendency toward drunkenness, a fourth toward debauchery, while the first has none of these tendencies, whether by the grace of his nature or thanks to the energy of his character. In the moral respect people supplement one another, as they do in the intellectual and physical respects, so that taken together as a whole they are as they ought to be, constitute perfect man.”

[¶13] Thus, to obtain perfect man, Feuerbach proposes taking the algebraic sum of virtues and vices. He fails to notice only that even by this recipe, which teaches how to obtain one Cecilia from ten Messalinas, one Marquis of Posa from ten Caligulas, one hero from ten Chekhovian types, and so on and so forth, the final sum yields at best only zero, as the result of positives and negatives cancelling one another out, rather than “perfect man.” Feuerbach develops his thought as follows:

[¶14] “If even love and friendship make of beings that are in themselves imperfect a single whole that is at least relatively perfect, how much more do the sins and vices of individual people disappear in the species itself, which has an adequate existence only in humanity as a whole (in der Gesammtheit der Menschheit).… Lamentations over sin therefore enter the order of the day only when the human individual in his individuality is regarded as completely absolute, as not needing others to realize within himself the species, perfect man; when the exclusive self-consciousness of the individual takes the place of species-consciousness; when the individual is not conscious of himself as a part of humanity, does not distinguish between himself and humanity, and therefore turns his own sins, his limitations, his weakness into universal sins, into the sins, limitations, and weakness of all humanity. Therefore, where the species is not an object for man as species, it becomes an object for him as god. The absence of the concept of the species is made good by the concept of god as a being free from the limitations and shortcomings that burden the individual and, in his opinion, the species itself, since he identifies himself with the species. But this essence, free from the limits of individuals and unlimited, is precisely nothing other than the species, which reveals the infinity of its essence in being realized in indefinitely numerous and diverse individuals. If all people were absolutely alike, there would, of course, be no difference between the species and the individual. But in that case the existence of many people would be sheer luxury; one would be enough for the purposes of the species.… Yet although the being of man is one, it is infinite; its actual existence has the aim of disclosing the infinite, mutually complementary diversity, the wealth of its essence. Unity in essence is diversity in existence.”

[¶15] This is how Feuerbach disposes of the fateful questions of individual consciousness, the tragedy of the spirit, the wounds of conscience, the absoluteness of its demands and the powerlessness to satisfy them, all those antinomies that make man so enigmatic a contradiction and give birth to metaphysical systems and religious beliefs. And there is one answer to everything: the individual’s imperfections are absorbed into the species; the sum is greater than its terms. The species is credited with perfection, infinity, diversity of forms of existence, and, naturally, the capacity for unlimited progress in history, which in contemporary philosophical consciousness is something like a “committee” among bureaucrats: to dispose of troublesome questions of life that insistently demand resolution and yet cannot be resolved by bureaucratic means, they are referred to a committee; and to dispose of the “accursed” philosophical questions, one appeals to progress: it will resolve everything, arrange everything. In connection with the question of a future life, we read the following in Feuerbach too:

[¶16] “The inference of a theological or religious Jenseits, the assumption of a future life for the purpose of perfecting man, would be justified if humanity remained constantly at one point, if there were no history, no perfecting and improvement of the human species on earth.… But the cultural history of humanity exists. Countless things our ancestors could not do and did not know, we can do and know today.… Thus what is now only an object of desire for us will one day be fulfilled; countless things that seemed impossible to the unenlightened guardians and defenders of current notions of faith and religious institutions of contemporary political and social conditions will one day become reality; countless things we do not know today but would like to know will be known to our descendants. In place of deities in whom only man’s groundless, capricious wishes are fulfilled, we have the human species or nature; in place of religion, education; in place of a Jenseits beyond our grave, the historical future on earth, the future of humanity.”

[¶17] Yet Feuerbach is not troubled by the question of the death of all that lives, of everything individual, which fits so poorly into this optimistic picture. We must do Feuerbach justice: he did not pass over this problem in silence or simply wave it away, as is customary. On the contrary, he always looked intently into the riddle of death, without shutting his eyes and while striving to reconcile himself with death and justify it, to create, in Jodl’s phrase, a “thanatodicy” (by analogy with theodicy), something so difficult and so contrary to living and immediate feeling. He returned to the problem of death several times. His first work, Todesgedanken, was devoted to it; it was still imbued with pantheistic Hegelianism, in which the immortality of the whole is acknowledged alongside the death of the individual (it is one of Feuerbach’s most obscure and immature works). Todesgedanken is thus an optimistically complacent hymn to the death of the person in the name of the immortality of the whole. Later Feuerbach concentrates his criticism on existing conceptions of life after death, but this rationalistic criticism has little fundamental interest. In the end, having become a philosophical materialist, Feuerbach finds repose in the idea of biological adaptation to death, of the naturalness of death at the proper time, anticipating what Mechnikov is now preaching. In Vorlesungen über das Wesen der Religion, which sums up his entire worldview, we read the following judgment on this subject:

[¶18] “Everything has its measure, says the Greek philosopher; in the end satiety comes for everything, even for life, and man finally wishes for death. Normal death, death in accordance with nature, the death of a completed man who has lived out his life, therefore has nothing terrifying about it. Old people often even sigh for death. The German philosopher Kant could scarcely wait for death in his impatience; he strove toward it not in order to begin living again, but out of a desire for his own end. Only an unnatural, unfortunate death, the death of a child, a youth, a man in his full strength, arouses our indignation against death and makes us wish for a new life. But however strange and grievous such unfortunate deaths may be for the survivors, they do not, nevertheless, authorize us to accept a Jenseits, if only because these abnormal cases, abnormal even if they now recur more often than natural death in accordance with nature, entail an abnormal otherworld as well, a world only for those who died violently or prematurely; but such an abnormal world would be something incredible and contrary to reason.”

[¶19] These judgments fully characterize Feuerbach’s general worldview.

[¶20] We can now turn to a critical examination of Feuerbach’s worldview. First, however, we must pause over an episode in the literature that is extraordinarily illuminating for Feuerbach’s doctrine and therefore of immense importance to an exact understanding of it. We mean Feuerbach’s polemic with Stirner, the celebrated author of Der Einzige und sein Eigenthum [The Unique One and His Property]. These two contemporaries, Stirner and Feuerbach, are both closely akin and irreconcilably opposed. Their affinity consists in their both being militant preachers of atheism; their opposition lies in the different ways they understand this atheism and in the content they give it. Feuerbach preaches a positive, humanistic atheism, which denies god in the name of man and humanity, and formulates his atheistic religion as homo homini deus est [man is god to man]. Stirner, by contrast, understood his atheism in an audaciously nihilistic way, sharpening it into the preaching of pure nihilism, the denial of all higher values, of everything sacred: “Alles Heilige ist ein Band, eine Fessel” [Everything sacred is a bond, a fetter]. He approached the very edge of the precipice, beyond which a yawning abyss opens up; he atomized humanity, abolishing every collective aspect of its existence and leaving only his own, one “unique” I, for which there is neither right, nor any common norm, nor good (Ich bin meine Gattung, bin ohne Norm, ohne Gesetz, ohne Muster u. dgl. [I am my own species; I am without norm, without law, without model, and the like]), since all these concepts arose from and are bound up with the idea of acknowledging human society, the “species,” the equal value of another’s I and my own I. In the preface to his book Stirner says: “The divine is god’s affair, the human is ‘man’s.’ My affair is neither the divine nor the human; it is not what is true, good, just, free, and so forth, but exclusively my own (das Meinige), and it is by no means universal, but unique (Einzig), just as I am unique. Nothing stands above me! (Mir geht nichts über Mich).” Here are two lapidary formulas expressing the two atheisms, Stirner’s and Feuerbach’s: “Mir geht nichts über Mich” and “homo homini deus est.” Could there be any greater opposition, accentuated still further by the closeness of their starting positions? The clash between these two atheists has immense philosophical interest, which has somehow remained unnoticed and unappreciated in the literature. Which of them is right as an atheist? Which is the more genuine atheist, whose atheism is more consistent, more radical, more sincere, more courageous? Observe that for people who have made atheism a kind of specialty, who care about nothing so much as being consistent atheists, there can be no greater insult, no more biting irony, than to accuse them of theology, piety, religiousness. And this is precisely the accusation made by one, bolder atheist against the other, who would like, in the crude but apt proverbial phrase, both to preserve his innocence and to acquire capital, who would like to retain an atheistic dogmatics without giving up certain conclusions drawn from religious beliefs. Stirner first threw down the gauntlet in his book, which may be described as one sustained objection to Feuerbach, openly mocking his piety:

(Mir geht nichts über Mich)».

[¶21] “After the destruction of faith, Feuerbach dreams of taking shelter in the supposedly peaceful harbor of love. ‘The highest and first law must be man’s love for man. Homo homini deus est: this is the highest practical rule, this is the turning point of history.’ Strictly speaking, only god, deus, has changed; love has remained: there love became a superhuman god; here there is love for the human god, and homo in the capacity of deus. Thus man is sacred to Me. And everything ‘truly human’ is sacred to Me! Marriage is sacred in itself. And so it is with all moral relationships. Sacred is friendship, and sacred may it be to you; sacred is property, sacred is marriage, sacred is the welfare of every human being, but sacred an und für sich [in and for itself]. Is there not a priest here once again? Who is his god? Man What is considered divine? The human! Thus the predicate alone has been made into the subject, and in place of the proposition ‘god is love’ stands ‘love is divine’; in place of ‘god became man’ stands ‘man became god,’ and so forth. This is only a new religion.”

[¶22] Rebelling against the thoughts and concepts of his age, the egoist mercilessly carries out the most decisive desecration (Entheiligung). Nothing is sacred to him!

[¶23] “It would be foolish to assert that I have no power over my own. Only the position I take toward it will be completely different from the one that existed in the religious age: I shall be an enemy of every higher power, whereas religion teaches us to make it our friend and abase ourselves before it. The desecrator (Entheiliger) strains all his powers against the fear of god. Whether god or man has sanctifying power in man, and consequently something is regarded as sacred in the name of god or of man, makes no difference to the fear of god; for man is just as readily regarded as the ‘supreme being’ as god, from the specifically religious point of view, demands fear and reverence from us as the ‘supreme being,’ and both impress us.”

[¶24] “The fear of god itself has long since been shaken, and a more or less conscious atheism, outwardly recognizable by widespread ‘unchurchedness,’ involuntarily sets the tone. But what has been taken from god has been bestowed upon man, and the power of humanity (Macht der Humanität) has increased to the same extent that piety has lost its weight: ‘man’ is an external god, and fear of man has taken the place of the old fear of god. But since man is merely a variety of the supreme being, in reality the supreme being has only undergone a metamorphosis, and fear of man is merely the unchanged form of the fear of god.

[¶25] Our atheists are ‘pious people.’

[¶26] Whether there is one god or a triune god, or a Lutheran god, or an être suprême [supreme being], or no god at all, so long as ‘man’ represents the supreme being, makes no difference to someone who denies the supreme being itself; for in his eyes these servants of the supreme being are all pious people: the most furious (wüthendste) atheist no less than the believing Christian.”

[¶27] The impression Stirner’s criticism made on Feuerbach was immense. Before our very eyes Feuerbach positively writhes in pain under the heavy blows of Stirner’s sarcasm. Although in a letter to his brother he declares that Stirner’s “brilliant” book “misses the point as regards me” and that its criticism “rests either on sheer incomprehension (puren Unverstand) or on frivolity,” in his reply to Stirner (Das Wesen des Christenthums in Beziehung auf den “Einzigen und sein Eigenthum” [The Essence of Christianity in Relation to “The Unique One and His Property”]) he displays, in our view, not only astonishing weakness but complete disarray. His theory could not withstand the alkaline acid of the reagent that the reckless “egoist” proved to be for it. Feuerbach first tries to go on the offensive himself: “‘Ich hab mein Sach auf Nichts gestellt’ [I have staked my cause on nothing], sings the Unique One. But is not nothing also a predicate of god, and is not the proposition ‘god is nothing’ (which, let us observe in passing, Stirner never asserted and never would have asserted, since he advanced an altogether different thesis: not ‘god is nothing,’ but ‘there is no god, there is nothing sacred’) an expression of religious consciousness?” In a note to this passage, to give it a scholarly appearance, Feuerbach adduces a reference showing that the definition “god is nothing” occurs not only in Eastern religions but also among Christian mystics. By this reference Feuerbach merely reveals conclusively his confusion and his inability to raise any substantive objection: need it be said that between the mystical acosmism of Buddhism and certain Christian mystics and Feuerbach’s militant nihilism there is far less resemblance than even between Feuerbach’s teaching and ecclesiastical orthodoxy? Feuerbach then tries to dispute the “unique one’s” thesis of his “uniqueness” by invoking the existence of sex, a wife, children, and so forth, as though this appeal had any significance for the “unique one” and could induce him to renounce his “uniqueness,” descend from his nihilistic throne, and acknowledge rights in these people and duties in himself, recognize in them something sacred for him, rather than a means. As though the existence of harems and brothels did not sufficiently demonstrate that sexual difference alone is still entirely insufficient to make a woman a person of whom one could say homo homini deus, rather than a thing that satisfies the whims of her “unique” master. In his further remarks Feuerbach becomes helplessly entangled in contradictions, but offers no substantive objection to Stirner. We think the reason is, of course, not Feuerbach’s accidental weakness, but the very nature of the case: he really had no objection to offer, for as regards Feuerbach, Stirner is entirely right. In Feuerbach’s own language, Stirner is Feuerbach’s truth, his revealed secret. The true atheist is Stirner, while Feuerbach does indeed remain a “pious” atheist, a “priest.”

[¶28] “The moralists,” Stirner reproaches Feuerbach, “have skimmed the fat off religion and used it for themselves, and now are trying to get rid of the glandular disease (Drüsenkrankheit) that comes from it.” “With the strength of despair Feuerbach clutches at the whole content of Christianity, not to throw it away, no, but to draw it to himself, to pull it, long desired but always distant, by a final effort into his own heaven and keep it with him forever. Is this not the struggle of final despair, a struggle of life and death, and is it not at the same time Christian yearning (Sehnsucht) and a desire for the beyond (Jenseits)? The hero does not want to enter the beyond, but wants to draw it to himself, force it to become this world (Diesseits)! Has not the whole world been crying out ever since, more or less consciously, that this world (Diesseits) is what matters, and that heaven must come down to earth and be experienced here already?” In the presence of this all-shattering nihilist who stops at nothing, Feuerbach looks like a proper good boy, a pastor, a good-natured sectarian. The full opposition between the two atheists and the two “egoists,” who flaunt their atheism and their egoism, will perhaps emerge still more fully if we learn how they understand their egoism.

[¶29] Let us first hear the “Unique One.” In answer to possible reproaches of egoism he declares:

[¶30] “Very well! I do not wish to have anything special in comparison with others; I do not wish to claim any advantage over them, but I do not measure myself by others and do not wish to have any right at all. I wish to be everything and have everything I can. Whether others have the same is no concern of mine. Something equal, something the same, they can neither have nor be... I regard myself not as something special, but as unique (einzig). Certainly I resemble others, but that matters only for comparison or reflection; in reality I am incomparable and unique. I do not wish to recognize or respect anything whatever in you, neither the property owner, nor the tramp (Lump), nor even simply the human being, but I wish to use you up (verbrauchen)... For me you are only what you constitute for me, namely my object, and, as my object, my property.” “Ausser mir giebt es kein Recht” [Outside me there is no right].

«Ausser mir giebt es kein Recht».

[¶31] How completely Dostoevsky divined all this! He surely never knew Stirner, but penetrated deeply into the worldview of atheism. Indeed, the German phrase just quoted can be translated directly into Russian by Ivan Karamazov’s fateful formula: everything is permitted; there is no God, and no morality. “Where I stand, there will at once be holy ground.”

[¶32] And alongside these truly satanic speeches, Feuerbach babbles his pious speeches, pretending all the while to be a fearsome nihilist, although the tassel on the nightcap of a home-loving bourgeois, a kindly uncle and the children’s favorite, peeps out from behind his mask:

[¶33] “By egoism I understand man’s love for himself, that is, love for the human being, that love that impels him to satisfy and develop all those aspirations and inclinations without whose satisfaction and development he cannot be, and is not, a true, perfect human being. By egoism I understand love for those like oneself, for what am I without it, what am I without love for the being of those like me? I understand the individual’s love for himself just as much as any love for an object or being as direct love for oneself, since I can love only what corresponds to my ideal, my feeling, my being.”

[¶34] Such is the loving heart of our good-natured “egoist,” beside whom falls the black, gloomy shadow of the demonic figure of the other, clad in the somber radiance of his prototype, with singed wings and the brand of the curse of eternal solitude.

[¶35] Can one imagine a more instructive spectacle than this clash of two “egoists,” one of whom has traveled his road to the end and stopped at the pole, while the other has merely lifted his foot and remained standing on the old, reliable ground, performing a philosophical “running in place”?

[¶36] The intellectual clash between Stirner and Feuerbach can by no means be considered a thing of the past. Stirner made only a slight impression on his time and was forgotten all too easily. But a new, later and more gifted preacher of kindred ideas appeared, who is beginning to exert a mighty influence upon the souls of contemporaries hitherto piously subsisting on the naive religion of humanity of Feuerbach and Comte. With still greater passion and no less audacity he attempted a “revaluation of all values,” attacking most fiercely the values of humanism that remained in Feuerbach’s teaching as the “fat skimmed off religion.” Nietzsche, for it is of him that we speak, treated the doctrine of love with particular hostility, accusing Christianity on this account of corrupting historical humanity; and for Nietzsche, as earlier for Stirner, Feuerbach, who imagined himself Christianity’s enemy and destroyer, necessarily turns out to be among its representatives. In the sphere of morality, “love thy neighbor” was replaced by sei hart [be hard], “push the one who is falling.” In place of the democratic doctrine of the equal ethical value of human beings, a doctrine of their unequal value was proclaimed, of the exceptional, higher or sole value of chosen overmen, aristocrats for whom the rest of humanity is merely material to be molded. Thus everything is turned upside down. What is most interesting here is that these ideas, expressed in an exotic form attractive to many, made the strongest impression on the contemporary world, muddled people’s heads, destroyed the unreflective immediacy of earlier humanistic beliefs, and became fashionable, whereas Stirner in his day passed almost unnoticed and disconcerted no one. But resurrected in Nietzsche, he now makes his voice heard across the heads of several generations. Atheistic humanism is undergoing an unquestionable and profound crisis, now that its foundation, its most fundamental democratic dogma, has been called into question. And in our view this crisis is still at its very beginning; the breaking up of the dominant worldview is only beginning, for, as Vladimir Solovyov wrote, “the window of Nietzschean over-humanity opens directly onto an immeasurable expanse of every possible path in life.” What these paths are has yet to be definitively established, but spiritual turmoil has already begun.

[¶37] Stirner and Nietzsche undermine the fundamental dogma of Feuerbach and of atheistic humanism in general: homo homini deus. For this dogma does indeed underlie every possible variety of that humanism, forming the ground common to them all. Contemporary theories of social development or progress that assume the guise of science may differ very greatly from one another both in their theoretical foundations and in their practical or tactical conclusions, but they all acknowledge one sole value: man, in the sense of any individual representative of the species or of the species as a whole. Liberals and socialists, Marxists and populists, factions of whatever kind, will in practice agree on one thing: there is no God, but man and humanity are god. This does not always lie on the surface or emerge clearly into consciousness, but the dogma retains its force even when it is denied in words. In the last years of his life Engels was inclined to deny his closeness to Feuerbach, first because he disliked Feuerbach’s use of the word “religion,” as though it were a matter of words here and changing a word would alter the essence; and second because Feuerbach, with his doctrine of love, indulges in sentimentality and fails to understand the significance of class struggle. But it is obvious that this last objection can be explained only by the narrowing of Engels’s own intellectual horizon; otherwise he would not object to a proposition of general philosophical and religious significance by invoking a particular sociological thesis which, whether true or false, cannot compete with the former. The doctrine of class struggle answers the question “how,” but not the question “what”; it supplies no goal, but only a form and a means, inseparably bound up with given conditions and liable to be eliminated along with them. In Marxism, class struggle aims at the abolition of classes and consequently at its own abolition; in this sense it too is a path of love. Thus Feuerbach could have been just as much a Marxist in his sociology as Engels, while Marxists remain Feuerbachians in their philosophy, that is, atheistic humanists. Indeed, do they know any value higher than man and humanity, do they in practice call the formula homo homini deus into question, and does it not determine all their ideals of the future, their ideals of socialism, of a free ordering of society? Their atheism is the same anthropotheism as Feuerbach’s, and in this sense all its representatives, irrespective of their differences, prove fundamentally opposed to the more radical atheists Nietzsche and Stirner, who in the name of atheism reject anthropotheism too, and, denying the heavenly God, do not want an earthly deity either.

[¶38] VII

> Russian: VII

[¶39] “Religion is man’s relation to his own essence: in this lies its truth and its morally beneficent power; but it is a relation to his essence not as his own, but as another essence, different from his own, even opposed to it: in this lies its untruth, its limitations, its contradiction with reason and morality.”

[¶40] The task of Feuerbach’s principal work, Wesen des Christenthums [The Essence of Christianity], is precisely to refute the untrue, that is, theological essence of religion by elucidating the true, that is, anthropological essence of religion; these are the very titles of the two divisions into which the work falls.

[¶41] In other words, Feuerbach’s attempt amounts to freeing the religion of God-manhood, founded on faith in the God-man, from that support and turning it simply into a religion of humanity, without impoverishing it in any way, merely removing its theological cataract. Feuerbach is convinced that the operation he undertakes is indeed wholly feasible and does no essential damage, and that a religion of humanity deprived of all theological support will stand more securely than with its assistance. With conscientiousness and talent Feuerbach carefully removes these supports everywhere, consciously and consistently performing a philosophical experiment of immense, one might say fateful, importance. He assumes the task of a religious prophet, the creator of a new religion. Here, then, is the decisive and fateful question: does the building, deprived of its former foundation, stand without cracking, or has it become merely a heap of debris? And that “being” (Wesen) of religion on which Feuerbach performs his operation: is it alive and vital, or has it long been dead, with only its corpse still retaining the former features of a living face, distorted and disfigured by death? And the new god to whom Feuerbach prays: is it a god, or a dead idol, or, worse still, an oracle for whom a priest speaks, no longer a prophet but an impostor?

[¶42] In view of this, so to speak, surgical origin of Feuerbach’s teaching, which nevertheless retains an inseparable connection with the Christianity it denies or, more accurately, corrects, our overall attitude toward it is naturally twofold. It cannot be accepted, but neither can it be rejected in its entirety. It contains the greatest and most important truths, but taken in such one-sidedness and abstraction that they thereby turn into equally great errors. The assertions Feuerbach retains from the Christianity he has rejected are true, but while accepting these derivative truths he simultaneously denies the far more important truths that ground them; the result is a strange mixture of deformities, contradictions and paradoxes, a labyrinth in which one must find a way.

[¶43] Two great and important truths are expressed with immense emphasis and energy in Feuerbach’s teaching: first, that man and humanity have unconditional religious significance; in other words, that man for man, or humanity for the individual, is and ought to be something religiously sacred, in Feuerbach’s expression an earthly god, a kind of absolute. The second truth is that humanity is a single whole, in which individuals are merely separate parts that lose all meaning and significance outside it, and that this unity is no abstraction, does not exist merely in thought, but is entirely real: humanity is a living, collective organism.

[¶44] These two truths, concerning the supreme dignity of the human species and its real unity, organically connected with each other, constitute the positive part of Feuerbach’s teaching. Its negative side consists in his directly connecting them with atheism, striving to present them as necessary conclusions from the philosophy of atheism and thereby undermining both doctrines at their foundation. In locating the essence of his worldview in atheism, Feuerbach undermines his own humanism, wages a continuous struggle against himself, and is torn by irreconcilable contradictions. Let us look closely at this instructive struggle.
