[¶0] Why, then, did the son raise his hand against his mother, coldly turn away from her centuries of suffering, spiritually renounce his own people?

[¶1] The answer is perfectly clear: in the name of rationalism and enmity toward religion, in the name of consistent atheism. Br. Bauer put forward the assertion, against which Marx argues in his article, that the Jewish question is at root a religious one, a question of the relation between Jewry and Christianity. I fully share this opinion, for from the standpoint of Christian beliefs no other understanding of the fate of Jewry is possible. The historical and spiritual fate of Jewry is bound up with the relation of Judaism to Christianity. We do not intend here to delve deeply into this question, but for us it is certain that precisely religious affirmations and negations, attraction and repulsion, fundamentally determine the historical fate of Jewry. "Schacher," the world role of Jewry in the history of capitalism, is merely the empirical shell of the peculiar religious psychology of Jewry.

[¶2] Despite all the atheism of a significant part of present-day Jewry, despite all its materialism, both practical and theoretical, beneath all these historical layers there still lies a religious substratum, which the religious genius of Vl. Solovyov was able to feel and so strikingly reveal. But Marx, of course, could not reconcile himself with a religious understanding of the Jewish question, and in order to consistently apply an anti-religious point of view here, he had to sacrifice his nationality, utter blasphemy against it, and fall into a peculiar anti-Semitism, not only practical but even religious.

[¶3] Thus we see that the principled indifference in matters of religion which found its official expression in the programmatic statement of the Social-Democratic Party of Germany and Austria that "religion is a private matter" (Privatsache) was already completely alien to Marx in the 1840s. Of course, on the party’s part too this is a conventional hypocrisy, prompted by tactical considerations, mainly the conditions of agitation in the countryside. Even a superficial acquaintance with the literature and general mood of the party of the followers of Feuerbach and Marx is sufficient to convince one of the insincerity of this statement, for of course this is, for the present, a party not only of socialism but also of militant atheism. Marx, however, never made a secret of this at all. In his well-known critical commentary on the draft of the Gotha Programme, Marx protests against the demand for "freedom of conscience" put forward there, calling it bourgeois and liberal, inasmuch as what is implied is freedom of religious conscience, whereas the workers' party, on the contrary, must free conscience from religious phantoms.

[¶4] One might object, however, that we have become acquainted with Marx's philosophical-religious worldview in statu nascendi, in an epoch when Marx himself was not yet a Marxist, not having yet worked out that peculiar doctrine which is usually associated with his name in political economy and sociology. Without denying this latter fact, we nevertheless assert that in the Deutsch-Französische Jahrbücher of 1844 Marx appears before us, in religious-philosophical terms, as fully formed and settled in his position. After this, he experienced no fundamental changes or upheavals in his philosophical faith. In this sense the general spiritual theme of his life was already given, its fundamental religious-philosophical motif fully recognized. The question could concern not what, but only how, and this how was Marxism, which in our eyes represents merely a particular case of Feuerbachianism, its special sociological formula.

[¶5] The distinctiveness of Marxism belongs to an entirely different domain from the philosophical one that interests us here—it is a complication, if you will, an enrichment, a further development of Feuerbachianism, but not its religious-philosophical overcoming. Engels in his pamphlet on Feuerbach greatly exaggerates this difference, turning it into a difference of principle. Perhaps Engels was guided here by the thought of defending Marx's originality even in a domain where he was completely unoriginal, namely the philosophical, and therefore he presents "economic materialism" here as something that fundamentally surpasses Feuerbachianism. Yet this doctrine merely indicates a certain sociological substratum for that historical process which has as its final result the realization of the Feuerbachian-Marxist postulate: "human emancipation," that is, the emancipation of humanity from religion, through its practical socialization, its transformation into a Gattungswesen on the basis of a socialist economy.

[¶6] In all of Marx's subsequent works there is nothing that would invalidate or limit the religious-philosophical program developed in the articles of the Deutsch-Französische Jahrbücher. One must consider that these articles represent, so to speak, the philosophical maximum for Marx, the point of greatest intensity of his purely philosophical thought. Thereafter, remaining faithful to what he had accepted and assimilated in his youth, he turns more and more away from philosophical problems, never to return to them at all, obviously owing to a complete inner calm, such as is given by the conviction that one is right and the absence of doubts about accepted dogmas. A paradoxical conclusion results: the richest material for understanding and judging Marx with regard to the aspect that interests us, which is also his most essential one, comes precisely from that epoch when Marx was not yet a Marxist, when his authentic spiritual character had not yet been obscured by the details of the specialized research by which he made his name.

[¶7] Thus, the world-historical task of human self-emancipation arose in Marx's consciousness. It was necessary to find an appropriate means for accomplishing it. Such a means was "scientific socialism," the system of which Marx begins to elaborate in his scientific activity. And from this time the range of his theoretical interests and pursuits, insofar as we can determine it from his writings and his own testimony about himself, narrows and concentrates predominantly, if not exclusively, on political economy and current politics. However, the most curious thing is that at this time Marx's theoretical pretensions are by no means limited to political economy but extend to the universal domain of the philosophy of history. At this time his "materialist understanding of history" takes shape, claiming to provide the key to comprehending all historical being. Whatever our view of this celebrated "discovery" of Marx, what interests us here is how it was actually made, what its psychology and inner motive are. We know that during this time Marx did not occupy himself, at least to any noticeable degree, with either history or philosophy. This means that the "discovery" came not as the result of a deeper theoretical inquiry, but as a new formula, dogmatically put forward and accepted on faith, a kind of artistic intuition rather than the fruit of scientific research (as, indeed, many genuinely scientific discoveries are born). The elements from whose combination the materialist understanding of history was formed are easy to distinguish: on the one hand, it is the same Feuerbachian doctrine of militant atheism which we already know, and on the other, the strong impression made by the facts of economic reality both through the study of political economy and through involvement in current politics. Thus, the new doctrine does not go beyond the limits of the old worldview, though it does complicate it.

[¶8] In particular, as regards religion, its philosophical treatment becomes even cruder, though it does not change in essence. It is declared, together with other "forms of consciousness," a "superstructure" above the economic "base." In the first volume of Capital we encounter the following judgment about it, which in essence does not take us at all beyond the articles on Hegel and other works of the 1840s: "For a society of commodity-producers, whose social relation of production consists in the fact that they treat their products as commodities, that is, as values, and in this material form relate their private labors to one another as equal human labor—for such a society Christianity with its cult of abstract man, especially Christianity in its bourgeois form—Protestantism, deism, etc.—represents the most fitting religion."

[¶9] This is Feuerbach, only translated into the language of political economy and, in particular, of Marx's economic system. The further general judgment on religion also sounds like an echo of Feuerbach: "The religious reflection of the real world can in general vanish only when the conditions of practical everyday life daily present men with perfectly clear and rational relations of man to man and to nature. The social process of life, that is, the material process of production, will cast off its mystical veil only when, as the product of freely associated men, it comes under their conscious and planned control."

[¶10] We see from the example of these judgments—and this is all that can be found in Marx in this period—that Marx's religious thought became neither more complex nor richer through his acceptance of the dogma of economic materialism; in it the same propositions assimilated from Feuerbach are still repeated. This dogma does not compel one here to renounce anything or reconsider anything afresh, but leaves everything as before, giving only a special formula which makes the specific subject of his new scientific pursuits—political economy—the science of all sciences and declares it the key to all "ideologies," that is, to the entire spiritual life of humanity.

[¶11] Let us touch in conclusion on the peculiar imprint that socialism received from Marx. And here we must state that the most profound, defining influence of Marx on the socialist movement in Germany, and later in other countries, manifested itself not so much in his political and economic program as in the general religious-philosophical character. The Social-Democratic Party, or, more generally, the political form of the workers' movement in Germany, was created not by Marx—who, properly speaking, was responsible for the unsuccessful attempt to divert it onto the false path of international organization (which the Communist Manifesto also advocates)—but by Lassalle, who founded the workers' party and firmly set it on the rails. Its further development and fate were determined by the specific conditions of the Prusso-German regime and subsequent historical events, but by no means by the influence of Marx. True, through his economic works Marx determined the worldview of Social-Democratic theoreticians and through them the official credo of the party. However, this theoretical credo is by no means so inseparably bound to the actual program, which is not theoretical Marxism but the so-called minimum program, more or less common to all democratic parties regardless of their relation to Marx. The tangible influence of Marxism makes itself felt here only in that its dogma still binds the party's feet in the agrarian question, and even here the urgent demands of life compel it finally to disregard this dogma, as the Russian Social-Democrats have already done and as the Germans are doing. Moreover, for any economist it must be obvious how far the purely economic doctrine of Marx has already fallen behind developments in life and social science simply through the passage of time; revealing ever new defects and simply becoming outdated, it increasingly becomes a matter of purely historical interest, retreating to the icon-shelf of the history of political economy, where Marx's name, of course, must be numbered among the honored names of Quesnay, Smith, Ricardo, List, Rodbertus, and other creators of political economy.

[¶12] Thus, however risky such an assertion may be and however much it contradicts the prevailing opinion, we nevertheless consider it highly probable that even without Marx the workers' movement would have been cast into its present political form, and a Social-Democratic workers' party would have been created with approximately the same program and tactics as the existing one. But Marx impressed upon it the indelible seal of his spirit (and consequently of that spirit of which he himself was the instrument) in the philosophical-religious sphere, and through Marx, Feuerbach did so as well. The general conception of socialism worked out by Marx is, of course, permeated with this spirit and responds to the needs of militant atheism; he gave it that tone which, as the saying goes, makes the music, turning socialism into a means of struggle against religion. However clear the general historical tasks of socialism may appear, the concrete forms of the socialist movement, we know, can differ greatly in their spiritual content and ethical value. It can be animated by a high, purely religious enthusiasm, insofar as socialism seeks the realization of truth, justice, and love in social relations, but it can be distinguished by the predominance of feelings of another, not so high an order: class hatred, egoism, the very same bourgeois spirit—only inside out—in a word, those feelings which in the form of the class standpoint and class interests play so dominant a role in the preaching of Marxism. Indignation against evil is, of course, a high and even holy feeling, which no living person or social activist can do without, yet there is a fine, almost imperceptible, and nevertheless supremely real boundary, beyond which this holy feeling turns into something not at all holy; we understand all the ease, naturalness, even imperceptibility of such a transformation, but the predominance of feelings of one order or another determines the spiritual physiognomy of both the person and the movement, although in our practical age it is not customary to take interest in the inner side unless it has immediate practical significance.

[¶13] Marx's entire doctrine flowed from his fundamental religious motif, his militant atheism: economic materialism, the preaching of class hostility à outrance, the denial of universal human values and universally binding norms beyond the limits of class interest, and, finally, the teaching about the unbridgeable abyss separating two worlds—the proletariat invested with a higher mission and the "general reactionary mass" of its oppressors. All these teachings could, of course, only coarsen the socialist movement, make it more earthbound, give it a more prosaic and economic character, and make the notes of class hatred louder in it than the notes of love for all humanity. We by no means attribute the introduction of this coloring into the movement to the influence of Marx alone; on the contrary, this spiritual temptation for the socialist movement is too great even without him and, of course, has found many paths in the past and continues to find them now (including here in Russia), but Marx was its mighty instrument. The personal influence of Marx in the socialist movement was reflected above all precisely in the strengthening of that anti-religious, God-defying element which rages in it, as in all our culture, and which will not say its last word without receiving its adequate, though final, embodiment.

[¶14] With great wisdom and deep understanding of the true character of the anti-religious element striving to seize the socialist movement and seduce it, Vladimir Solovyov in his tale of the Antichrist depicts him, among other things, as a social reformer, a socialist.

[¶15] And in socialism, as throughout our culture, the struggle between Christ and Antichrist goes on...

[¶16] "Thy Kingdom come! Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven!" Such is our prayer.

[¶17] Such too is the ultimate goal of the cosmic and historical process. Such must be the highest and sole criterion for evaluating human deeds, assigning them a plus or a minus in creation, giving them an absolute and final, that is, religious coefficient. Have we employed the powers granted us by God for the building of the Kingdom of God, which it is given to us not only to await but also, to the extent of our strength, to prepare, even if only as the lowliest and most insignificant masons—in this work there is nothing insignificant—or have we squandered these powers in vain, in shameful idleness and sloth, or, finally, have we employed them for work "in one's own name," alien and hostile to the purposes of the Kingdom of God? In the life and activity of each person, in various combinations, there are elements of all these three categories, and no one will dare to strike an overall balance and pronounce the final verdict upon his neighbor: he is an enemy of God's work! But this impossibility of making a final evaluation—an evaluation that belongs only to the righteous judgment of God—in no way frees us from the duty to peer into life with a searching gaze, where evil wages, as we know, an irreconcilable struggle with good and, what is most dangerous, in this struggle sometimes appears even under the mask of good, distinguished from it not by external but only by internal signs. And, faithful to this demand, though by no means daring to draw an overall conclusion, we must distinguish in Marx too, alongside the work of the Lord, energy of an entirely different order, ominous and dangerous—he presents a mysterious and terrible duality. The socialist activity of Marx as one of the leaders of a movement directed toward the defense of the dispossessed in capitalist society and toward the transformation of the social order on the principles of justice, equality, and freedom, in terms of its objective aims, it would seem, must be recognized as work for the building of the Kingdom of God. But the fact that he wanted to make this movement a means for destroying what is sacred in man and setting himself in its place, and was guided by this aim in his activity, must from a religious point of view receive a negative evaluation; here we have precisely that subtle and most dangerous temptation, when good and evil differ not outwardly but inwardly. Which weighs more here—the plus or the minus—we shall learn only when our own balance too has been struck, and we ourselves must leave the question open. However, to state here what, after many years of intense scrutiny of Marx’s spiritual countenance, we saw in him and what many others do not see, we considered our moral duty, a matter of conscience, however it may be received by those to whom precisely this dark, shadowy side of Marx's spirit is congenial.
