[¶0] Hosea, Amos, Micah, Joel, too,

[¶1] 255 With Obadiah, Jonah, Nahum, come;

[¶2] Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai,

[¶3] And Zechariah who did violence

[¶4] Suffer, and Malachi—angel himself!

[¶5] Are here: these are the Lord’s seers; and their choir,

[¶6] 260 As still they sing, is heard; and equally

[¶7] Their proper wreath of praise they all have earned.

[¶8] How great was Daniel! What a man!

[¶9] What power!

[¶10] Who by their own mouth did false witnesses

[¶11] Bewray, and saved a soul on a false charge

[¶12] 265 Condemned; and, before that, by mouth resolved

[¶13] The king’s so secret dreams; foresaw how Christ

[¶14] Dissolves the limbs of kingdoms; was accused

[¶15] For his Lord’s was made the lions’ prey;

[¶16] And, openly preserved before all eyes,

[¶17] 270 Rested in peace.

[¶18] His Three Companions, scarce

[¶19] With due praise to be sung, did piously

[¶20] Contemn the king’s iniquitous decree,

[¶21] Out of so great a number: to the flames

[¶22] Their bodies given were; but they preferred,

[¶23] 275 For the Great Name, to yield to penalties

[¶24] Themselves, than to an image stretch their palms

[¶25] On bended knees. Now their o’erbrilliant faith,

[¶26] Now hope outshining all things, the wild fires

[¶27] Hath quencht, and vanquisht the iniquitous!

[¶28] 280 Ezra the seer, doctor of Law, and priest

[¶29] Himself (who, after full times, back did lead

[¶30] The captive People), with the Spirit filled

[¶31] Of memory, restored by word of mouth

[¶32] All the seers’ volumes, by the fires and mould

[¶33] 285 Consumèd.

[¶34] Great above all born from seed

[¶35] Is John whose praises hardly shall we skill

[¶36] To tell: the washer of the flesh: the Lord’s

[¶37] Open forerunner; washer, too, of Christ,

[¶38] Himself first born again from Him: the first

[¶39] 290 Of the new convenant, last of the old,

[¶40] Was he; and for the True Way’s sake he died,

[¶41] The first slain victim.

[¶42] See God-Christ! behold

[¶43] Alike, His Twelve-Fold Warrior-Youth! in all

[¶44] One faith, one dove, one power; the flower of men;
