[¶0] How to Work

> Russian:

[¶1] We pass at work the best part of our own life.

[¶2] It is necessary, then, to learn to work in such a way that work would be light and that it would be a permanent school of life.

[¶3] Preface to Edition I

> Russian: Предисловие к I изданию

[¶4] The rules “How to Work” were for the first time made public by me at the conference on the Scientific Organisation of Labour in February 1921.

[¶5] They were printed in “Izvestia”, reprinted in all the workers’ newspapers, both of the capital and of the provinces; finally, they were reprinted in the journals on the scientific organisation of labour.

[¶6] In the newspaper “Trud” [Labour] I printed popular commentaries on each point.

[¶7] In the present booklet I reprint both the rules and the commentaries without changes. I attach only two small articles — “The Plan of the Workbench” and “How to Invent”.

[¶8] _A. GASTEV_

> Russian: _А.

[¶9] _CIT_

> Russian: _

[¶10] _Pedagogical Laboratory._

> Russian: _Педагогическая лаборатория._

[¶11] _Moscow, January 1922._

> Russian: _Москва, январь 1922 г._

[¶12] Preface to Edition II

[¶13] The first edition of my booklet “How to Work”, released by the Central Institute of Labour, has sold out. But before letting the booklet go into the II edition, the author decided to make additions. Firstly, more concrete explanations have been introduced into the very chapter “How to Work”; secondly, the edition is calculated so that, while introducing the reader into the simplest questions of everyday work, it gradually connects this practice with the most complex problems of the organisation of labour.

[¶14] The introduction into the so-called Scientific Organisation of Labour (NOT) has been made with the calculation of a gradual straining [loading] of the reader. The reader who wishes to stop at a determinate stage may limit himself to a determinate part of the content, with the calculation of consolidating the information by experimental means.

[¶15] _A. GASTEV_

> Russian: _А.

[¶16] _January 1924._

> Russian: _

[¶17] _CIT. Moscow._

> Russian: _

[¶18] Preface to Edition III

> Russian: Предисловие к III изданию

[¶19] The second edition of the booklet “How to Work” has long since sold out. The author delayed the edition because he wanted to make an organisational addition, reflecting the organisational methodology of CIT. And this could be done only after the works of the author upon this methodology.

[¶20] Life has made a verification of the idea “How to Work”, as of all the ideas of CIT. These ideas turned out to be not only needed by the Working Class: they are now considered the alphabet of work. More than that, these ideas are the beginning of the education of the worker who wishes to pass the examination for manly [courageous], responsible direction both of his own work and of that of others.

[¶21] The idea of training, at first put forward by us as a method of education of the working youth, is now defended by us as a method of re-education of the entire Working Class for a new, precise, fast and creative production.

[¶22] _THE AUTHOR._

> Russian: _

[¶23] DO NOT FORGET: YOUR FIRST STEP IN THE REORGANISATION OF ENTERPRISES AND INSTITUTIONS IS TO BRING ABOUT CLEANLINESS
