[¶0] The arrangement of the working parts of the body [корпус: trunk, hull] and the extremities is of great significance during work. An enormous quantity of operations becomes difficult only because, together with the work, it is necessary to hold the entire body suspended [on the weight]. This can be said wholly about all operations where it is necessary to apply insignificant muscular manual forces (the work of gauge-makers [лекальщики: makers of templates and gauges]). In such operations far more force is expended on holding the body than on the work itself. The more stools and chairs there are in the factory, the more Labour Force [рабочая сила] will be conserved; the work will proceed more evenly and more calmly. In exactly the same way many women, executing extremely petty, painstaking work, often do not themselves guess that it is possible to work sitting. But if it is already impossible to work sitting, and it is necessary to hold the body upon the legs, then the arms and legs must be dealt with calculatingly. If in the work the motions happen to be away from oneself, then for the most part it is necessary to stand so that one leg is in front, and the other — behind. If the motion happens to be longitudinal, along the chest or the abdomen, then the legs are to be set apart to the side. If we work with the right hand, with motions away from ourselves and towards ourselves (filing), then the left leg must be set forward, with the foot almost perpendicular [отвесно: plumb] to the chest, the right leg backward, with the foot almost parallel to the chest, and in general with the toes slightly inward. If we, having grown tired, were to try to change the legs over and were to stand with the right in front and the left behind, then we would see that there was far less support in the work, and we would soon again step over with the left forward, the right backward. This is because, with the setting [постановка] of the right leg forward, the foot would be placed not as a stop against the left foot, but would, as it were, slide along it. In operations where it is necessary to make motions not away from oneself, but along oneself, parallel to the chest — as, for example, in joiner’s operations, where, among other things, it is very difficult to change the leg — the question of the arrangement of the legs has an even greater significance. He who works standing must ponder this science, at first glance a trifling one; and if this science were carried through upon great masses, then we would see what great advantages it yields.

[¶1] WITH THE RATIONALISATION OF LABOUR THE NEED FOR ITS PROTECTION WILL VANISH

[¶2] IX

[¶3] _“During work it is obligatory to rest. In heavy work it is necessary to rest more often and, where possible, to sit; in light work the rests are rare, but uniform.”_

[¶4] In our backward country it has long been the established practice [ведётся: is conducted] that men work with a colossal pressure up to complete fatigue, and afterwards remain in perfect rest, in a completely lazy state. Thus, it is known that in the village in summer they work up to complete exhaustion (“страда” — harvest-time, literally the season of suffering), and in autumn and partly in winter they remain in a half-sleep. This seasonality of rests lays its stamp even upon factory work. We know that in summer the public is drawn intensively from the factories towards work in the village, and in autumn and at the beginning of winter returns back to the factory; and very often it turns out that the released workers work extremely intensively in their own village, but look upon factory work as upon a half-rest. In Western Europe such a sharp difference between seasonal work and ordinary work does not exist. There the work proceeds evenly, even across the seasons of the year. It is precisely this pressure, reaching exhaustion, and this rest, reaching complete laziness, that must be ended. It is necessary to make it so that in work the rests are scattered uniformly. This is, above all, in the interests of the working man. As a law one may install [установить: also set, establish] the rule that in heavy work it is necessary to make frequent interruptions, and, conversely, in light work the interruptions must be small. It is in the highest degree harmful to work until the moment when the heart already begins to beat unremittingly, and the man in exhaustion falls or sits down at work.

[¶5] It is especially difficult to keep watch over oneself in this respect at the beginning of work. One must never bring oneself to exhaustion; rather, it is necessary to act so that even at the beginning of work, when there is no full need for rest, one nevertheless strives to make even a small interruption. This immediately creates in the work such a fitting-together [приладка: adjustment, adaptation] that the man will cope with heavy work over the course of a round day. If even at the very beginning, when there is not yet full fatigue, one does not rest, then by the middle of the day we have already quite cut off our own wings in the work. Anyone can make an experiment: take up heavy work and carry it through for two hours without rest, and then after a rest begin to work again; and on the next day make an experiment of such a kind that over the course of two hours one nevertheless rests three or five minutes at a time — the working man will see that in the second case he will hold up [продержится: keep going] during the day far better and will accomplish more work than without such rests. For in any case, for such a violation in the distribution of rest, one will necessarily have to pay at the end of the day by having to rest, and to rest thoroughly, losing an enormous quantity of time. Rests of this kind are extremely useful in piece-work. Ordinarily it happens thus: at first the man begins to drive out piece after piece, works up a mountain, and then “gives way,” and only at the end of the day bears down again. It is necessary to act so that even in piece-work one carries it through during the day at one average tempo. Then there will never be great fatigue, and the work will proceed completely calmly, and the labourer will relate even to failures of every sort with complete cold-bloodedness. It is very important, after prolonged experience, to adjust [наладить: set up] the rest evenly, uniformly. But if one acts so as to rest a little, then to work, then to rest a great deal, then by this very fact we undoubtedly corrupt ourselves and spoil the work. We then resemble a frenzied horse, which flies with all its swiftness until it is bloodied and lies down.

[¶6] IT IS IMPORTANT NOT ONLY TO GIVE REST, BUT ALSO TO IMPART AN INSTALLATION TO IT — TO ORGANISE IT

[¶8] _“During the work itself one must not eat or drink tea; one must drink, in extreme cases, only for the quenching of thirst; one must not smoke either — it is better to smoke in the working interruptions than during the work itself.”_

[¶9] In workshops and factories the custom of chewing something, drinking tea and smoking during work is very widespread. Great efforts must be applied in order to break this habit. If hunger takes hold between arrival at work and dinner, and bread is at hand, then it is better to interrupt the work and eat, but never to eat during the work itself. This is bad for the stomach; it is very bad also for the character of the man, in whom every holding-out [выдержка] is knocked out; and it is still fouler for the work itself, which during this time is necessarily executed slovenly. Not to speak of the fact that mugs, glasses, bread and crumbs appear at the working place and order is violated — during eating there must necessarily be slovenliness and distraction in the work. If it is impossible to endure until dinner, then one must go so far as to have the entire workshop make an interruption for breakfast of approximately 10–15 minutes. This will be far more advantageous for the working man, for the work and for the enterprise as a whole. It often happens now that over the course of a whole day the labourers, now and again, begin to chew, drink, etc. This, of course, introduces into the whole work a colossal disorder [разлад: discord, disarray]. Among us Russians there exists a most harmful habit of drinking much tea. The consumption of tea in large quantities terribly slackens the man, slows down the life of the entire organism and makes the man very nervous; in Western Europe tea or coffee is drunk one glass each, whereas among us they drink up to ten. This same habit is carried through among us during work as well. One must drink only for the quenching of thirst, but tea as a beverage must be destroyed [abolished], all the more so since the factory then transforms itself into some sort of tea-house, and great disorder is introduced.

[¶10] Concerning smoking, it would be required to forbid it strictly and stringently during work; but since this cannot be done, because the harmful habit has taken root thoroughly, it would be necessary to introduce as a rule that, in any case, during work men never work with a cigarette in the mouth, but smoke in the working interruptions, during rest; cigarette smoke, inhaled during work with particular force, spoils the lungs far more than in a calm state. True, it is thought that a cigarette excites the man, and that the work proceeds more briskly [спорей: more productively] with smoking. This is sometimes true, but only at times, whereas in general only a spoiling of the character occurs. The worker then commits precisely that fundamental sin: he works with strong bursts [порывы: gusts, impulses] and soon gives way. There are men who absolutely cannot work without a cigarette. This is already the most dangerous moment; such a habit must be combated with full force.

[¶11] ONE CAN WORK FOUR HOURS OUT OF EIGHT, REST FOUR, AND FEEL ONESELF SHATTERED. ONE CAN REST ONLY TWO HOURS OUT OF EIGHT AND NOT BE TIRED. EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON HOW THE RESTS ARE DISTRIBUTED.

[¶12] WHEN THE WORK DOES NOT GO — DO NOT GRAB AT A CIGARETTE, BETTER TAKE A DEEPER BREATH.

[¶13] WORK OUT [вырабатывайте: develop] HOLDING-OUT — YOU WILL CONQUER, YOU WILL ATTAIN.

[¶14] WORKER, TAKE FROM THE SOLDIER HIS COURAGE, ORGANISEDNESS AND DISCIPLINE; SOLDIER, TAKE FROM THE WORKER HIS KNACK [

[¶15] X, XII, XV

> Russian: X, XII, XV

[¶16] _“If the work does not go, then do not grow heated; better make an interruption, bethink yourself and take it up again quietly; even deliberately slow down, in order to hold yourself out [выдержать себя].”_

[¶17] _“During the work itself, especially when the affair does not go, it is necessary to interrupt the work, to bring the working place into order, to lay away the instrument and material carefully, to sweep away the rubbish and to take up the work again, and once more gradually, but evenly.”_

[¶18] _“In the event of complete failure one must look upon the affair lightly, not become upset, begin the work anew as though for the first time, and conduct oneself as indicated in rule II.”_

[¶19] Holding-out [выдержка] in work is the chief thing. Upon failure one must not, as is customary, go out of oneself; one must take oneself in hand, and if there has been a failure, then one must act thus: just take and, completely calmly, make a small rest, and then, having thought it through properly, take up the work again. And here, in order that there be holding-out, it is necessary to carry through a thorough struggle with oneself. Ordinarily in such cases it happens thus: a man, having spoiled some thing, tears himself from the spot exactly like a madman and hot-headedly begins to pull the work about [теребить: pluck, tug at] again; he becomes, as in a race, very rapid, hot, but at the same time distracted; he wants necessarily to make up the lost time, wants to finish the work very quickly, and lo — he has spoiled the work a second time. It will be necessary to recall the golden rule concerning even work, concerning rests, and to take oneself in hand in this manner: to begin the work again, without hurrying at all, executing all the grips [приёмы: techniques, methods] of work completely precisely, constantly looking back upon the work cold-bloodedly, resting; you will then conquer all difficulties. One must be rigidly confident that the work is being carried through well, distinctly; and then the man will undoubtedly believe in himself, will execute the work with free courage and will conquer the work. And thus it must be remembered: if another man, or you yourself, upon failure quite naturally begins to hurry and chase, then one must immediately say to oneself or to the other: “quieter! even running [ровный ход: stroke, course]!” — and then the work will go.

[¶20] But if nevertheless the work jams [заедает: seizes up], if the work has finally worn the working man down, then the following must be done: one must tidy oneself up, one must clean the hands, the clothing, one must bring the machine-tool, the entire working place, into order, one must lay out the instrument properly, in order, examine properly whether there is anything superfluous, and at the same time whether perhaps something is lacking; and after order has been imposed and the man has felt a certain elevation [uplift], one must begin to work again, and then the work willy-nilly will necessarily go. If everyone, carrying through such experiments upon himself, were in the end to attain successes, he would understand what it means to conquer oneself, one’s own looseness [расхлябанность: slackness, as of a loose joint], one’s own slovenliness.

[¶21] And so: to work evenly, to work in order, to work cleanly.

[¶22] DO NOT IMAGINE YOURSELF AN ORGANIZER BEFORE YOU HAVE IMPOSED CLEANLINESS.

[¶23] XIII

> Russian: XIII

[¶24] _“One must not tear oneself away from work for another affair, except for what is necessary in the work itself.”_

[¶25] In work we often lack attention. We often tear ourselves away from work for other affairs, whereas it is necessary to chain oneself to the work; it is necessary to make it so that one grasps at nothing else. Work will succeed especially when everything is well prepared beforehand, everything calculated beforehand. And meanwhile many work thus: they work a while, and then run off for something, and often even for that which they do not need at all in their work. And what comes of this? What comes of it is that the man has shaken off from himself the working mood, that he has at once forgotten much in his work, he has put the work out of adjustment [разладил: disarranged], he has switched himself off and, of course, has lost much in the work. Now, if he had simply rested at this time, and had not gone to another place, had not grasped at extraneous affairs, then it would have been far better for the affair. That is just the point: we sin in that at one and the same time we take up a thousand different affairs, but finish not one affair and execute not one affair properly. The rule is this: to hammer [долбить: chisel, peck] at one and the same place firmly, constantly, without tearing away, up to complete victory.

[¶26] WE SHALL FIGHT FOR AN EVEN TEMPO OF WORK. THERE MUST BE NO EXCESSIVE STRAINS REPLACED BY A COLLAPSE OF FORCES.

[¶27] XIV

> Russian: XIV

[¶28] _“There is a very bad habit — after the execution of work to show it at once; here it is obligatory to ‘hold out’, so to speak, to grow accustomed to success, to crush one’s satisfaction, to make it internal; otherwise, another time, in the event of failure, there will result a ‘poisoning’ of the will and the work will become repulsive.”_

[¶29] We speak much of holding-out, but if holding-out is necessary anywhere, it is not even in the work itself, but in that mood which results after the completion of the work. A very widespread type in the working milieu among us is the upstart. If he works something well, then he will necessarily rush about with it; he will necessarily show it to the first comer and crosser [first person he meets]. Here one must crush oneself, here one must take oneself in hand; one must conquer in work, one must execute it well and not bat an eye at it. Then, another time, when the work is completely spoiled, one will not have to hide it from alien eyes and suffer as upstarts suffer. A man with holding-out will relate very lightly to his failure; he will just as lightly begin to make the thing anew, whereas the upstart is almost incapable of making a spoiled thing anew: he can surrender only to the mood of the minute, he is a man of chance, he will sooner consent to divine his failure or success by cards than to test it in the affair. A real, proud Worker will never display himself; he must necessarily be restrained. Look at the Western European mechanics who before the whole people somewhere at an exhibition service a complex machine, or in the cinematograph show some complex demonstration; they conduct themselves like ordinary modest servitors [служаки: diligent servicemen], and you will scarcely pay them any attention. But among us a small success is immediately carried out into the street; they begin to shout and chatter about it, and within a week everything has already stalled [заглохло: died away, as an engine]: a new transition to new successive affairs… And so, holding-out in everything, including in success.

[¶32] _“Upon the completion of work everything must be tidied — the work, the instrument and the working place; laid in a defined place, so that, taking up the work again, everything can be found and so that the work itself does not become repulsive.”_

[¶33] In work it is important not only to prepare everything in order for the work, but also to clear away and tidy everything in full order. One must not act so that, when the time comes to finish the work, this work and the instrument are thrown down and left however they fall. It is obligatory, before every completion of work, to stop working, to tidy everything thoroughly, to arrange it in order, to lay the instruments in a safe place, to wipe, tidy and clean the machine-tools or the working place. Otherwise, what will there be on the next day? You have come to work; the machine-tool has rusted overnight, the instrument is buried under a heap, you cannot find it, to the left a rag, to the right crumbs, straight under your nose shavings together with crusts. How will this affect the labourer? Why, thus: he will want to spit, not to work. But if everything were in order, were clean, everything arranged as it should be, and he had only to take up the instrument and work — everything would at once go for him as if on oil [как по маслу: like clockwork]. The work will not be repulsive, but, on the contrary, the work will elevate the man. Among us it often happens thus: they work and either chase or dawdle [волынят: go slow], but as soon as the hooter sounds, as soon as the hour of the end of work has come, they tear themselves straight from the spot, run without looking back and leave the working place to the mercy of fate; and on the morrow — one thing stolen, another lost, a third shoved against the wall, a fourth spoiled overnight. It must be firmly remembered that care for one’s working place is the same as care for oneself. If the working place is neat, if upon the completion of work it is all smoothed down and cleaned, then the man himself will be neat, clean, accurate [аккуратный: tidy, exact]; his work must go without knot or snag.

[¶34] CEASE WORKING “ROUGHLY”, BECOME ARTISTS OF WORK.

[¶35] NEVER SPEAK OF HOPELESSNESS. DO NOT BOW BEFORE OBSTACLES. A PERSISTENT THOUGHT AND A TENACIOUS WILL WILL KNOW HOW TO CONQUER THEM.
