[¶0] The Workplace

> Russian:

[¶1] Ordering [распорядок: also regimen, arrangement] at the workplace — this is a necessary condition for good productive work. If the workplace is found in full order, if it is well organised, then this is already half of the matter for the execution of the work.

[¶2] The workplace, this is all the same as the bed [frame] in a machine-tool. If it is well secured, if it is precisely calculated, then upon it may be secured whatever instrument one pleases, and the work will go in full order.

[¶3] Many speak of the Scientific Organisation of Labour, but pay no attention to so trifling a thing as the workplace. A good worker may be distinguished from a bad one, chiefly, by the fact that with him the workplace is tidied and superbly organised.

[¶4] With the bad worker the workplace is found in disorder, it is slovenly, it is neglected.

[¶5] Before assimilating any lofty matters concerning normalisation [standardisation] and machinisation, it is necessary to occupy oneself with creating the culture of one's own workplace, of one's own working workshop.

[¶6] Two golden rules it is necessary to remember in this:

[¶7] 1) the bringing about of cleanliness and 2) of order. If these conditions are not fulfilled, then of the Scientific Organisation of Labour one may speak only by mocking this organisation.

[¶8] GRASP THE INSTRUMENT WITH A DEFT, SURE HAND, GUARD IT AND CHERISH IT

[¶9] The Planning [Layout] of the Workplace

[¶10] (On the example of the fitter's bench in operational filing work)

[¶11] We make an attempt to present a plan of the disposition of everything that is found at the workplace.

[¶12] We set about this matter very cautiously: we do not wish to give a plan that would suit everything and everyone, that would be fit for every work and for every instrument. We make attempts to show by an entirely concrete example how best and most conveniently to dispose materials, tools and instruments. Probably each will here have to draw a whole series of general conclusions, but we nonetheless, in our explanations, shall hold entirely to the concrete. This — [is] the fitter's [слесарный: also locksmith's] bench. By fitter's works, in the precise sense of this word, we shall count works of fitting one part of metal to another. Fitter's works may be roughly divided into two categories: mounting [montage] works and operational works. By mounting works we shall understand the work of fitter's assembly, when it is necessary, after the processing of details [machine parts] on machine-tools or at benches, to assemble all these details together into some one mechanism. Mounting work — this is assembly work. Under the name of operational work we understand work exclusively upon some one detail: whether this work consists in the detail being cut, filed or chipped [рубка зубилом: cutting with the chisel]. We now give a plan exclusively for operational works, when the work goes piece after piece, in mass, and when this work is produced exclusively by one kind of instrument. As the chief instrument of the fitter one must count the chipping instruments and the filing instruments. We have in view now the filing instruments, i.e. files or fitter's saws. The present plan of the bench is worked out on the basis of the principle of short and useful distributive motions. Here we wish to eliminate all motions superfluous and useless. In order that this plan be better perceived, we divide the bench into two parts: the left part — comparatively smaller — will be occupied by materials, the right part — comparatively larger — will be occupied by tools. Closest of all to the worker must be disposed his working instrument, especially if the material upon which he works is not very small and the operation itself is not too small. At a comparative remove from the worker will be found the materials for processing and such tools as are used comparatively rarely. There results a disposition of this kind: the left part of the bench, from its very edge, will be occupied by blanks [prepared stock], i.e. either by rough material, or else by such fitter's and machine work as has arrived from preliminary operations; to the right of these blanks must then be found the details which have been finished by the worker. That the blank must be found to the left of the finish [finished work], this is clear, because the blank itself tends to be more bulky than the finish; it is often brought by an outside worker, and it is necessary to provide that, in the transfer, the transferring worker should need to use fewer motions, and that it should not hinder the working fitter. Therefore it is clear that the blank must be found at the left edge.

[¶13] The finished parts are found further to the right, under the very hand of the worker. This is important also because the worker, having constantly before his eyes his own finished thing, all the more so when disposed in order, has the possibility of constantly taking measure with his eyes and casting [sketching] in his head a constant stereotype (precise pattern) of his work. The right part of the bench is occupied by tools, which we divide into two grades: rarely used and frequently used.

[¶14] The frequently used must be under the hand, at a short distance; the rarely used must be further, at a comparatively far distance. There results, approximately, such a picture: in the far part of the right side is found the surface plate [checking plate] and the auxiliary measuring instrument connected with it, such as, for example, squares, rules, etc.; nearer to oneself are found the vice and the files, and right there, on the front part of the vice, especially if the work is fine, is found the fine measuring instrument in the form of templates, profile-gauges, etc. Let us turn attention to the position of the files. That the file must be found to the right of the vice — this is clear from the fact that we work with the file by the right hand, and at changes of file it would be strange to lay this file on the left side of the vice. It is clear that the file must lie to the right. By this precise determination of the place of the files we wish to eliminate a very harmful habit, widespread among fitters, when they, after work and during it, throw the file onto the bench straight before themselves, in front of the vice; apart from the fact that this habit signifies slovenliness, it accustoms the worker to disorder and compels him to search comparatively long for the needed file. The disposition of the files to the right, however, and in strict parallel order to one another, will help the worker to find the needed file quickly. There may be, of course, excuses that to dispose the files thus in parallel order, strictly perpendicular to the front line of the bench, will be an idle undertaking and require much time, but this is not true. Only at the beginning is it necessary to apply considerable efforts in order to accustom oneself to lay the files in order; afterwards it will already be possible to lay them entirely blindly [without looking]. We intensively recommend laying the file on the bench so that the handle of the file hangs over from the bench. By this is eliminated the possibility of a splinter in the taking finger, and, on the other hand, it is far more convenient to take the file in empty space than on the table, and it may even be more quickly found and kept in the needed order.

[¶15] Each who attentively reads the given explanation and looks closely into the plan presented above may carry out an experiment of this kind. He may take the measure of another work and only then give a somewhat different plan. Thus, for example: it would be useful for those fitters who stand for a prolonged time at chipping with the chisel or the cross-cut chisel to convince themselves that the plan presented above will no longer suit, because the chisel is held by the left hand, while the hammer is found in the right hand. Then, probably, a far more convenient position will be such that the chisel will be found to the left of the vice, the hammer — to the right. It does no harm to ponder what the position of the chisel on the bench must then be: edge towards oneself or else away from oneself. It is proposed to each to solve this problem and to raise it into a rule, having verified it well by experiment. And then, at all other works, there will already be worked out a very good habit — to plan the disposition of instruments at one's own workplace.

[¶16] THE AXE… THIS IS THE ETERNALLY YOUNG GRANDFATHER OF THE STEAM HAMMER, THE HYDRAULIC PRESS, THE TURNING MACHINE-TOOL, THE GRINDING MACHINE

[¶17] BEFORE THE BEGINNING OF WORK YOU PRONOUNCE: “THIS IS DIFFICULT” — AND ALREADY THINK OF NOT TAKING IT UP. BUT IS IT NOT POSSIBLE THE OTHER WAY ROUND: TO SAY — “DIFFICULT” AND BE INSPIRED BY THIS DIFFICULTY, IN THE HOPE OF VANQUISHING IT, HAVING INVENTED A MEANS OF EASY OVERCOMING

[¶18] Rules

> Russian: Правила

[¶19] In the planning-out of the workplace it is necessary to take into account the following circumstances:

[¶20] 1) From which side the work is brought to the workplace, from which side — carried away.

[¶21] 2) With which hand the instrument is taken: the right or the left.

[¶22] 3) Whether the instrument is taken often.

[¶23] 4) What [kind] it is — measuring or working.

[¶24] 5) Convenience for the grasping of the instrument (both with orientation by sight and blindly).

[¶25] 6) Short distance from the machine-tool or the vice.

[¶26] 7) That the processed things not be mixed with the instruments, nor the instruments with one another,

[¶27] IF YOU YOURSELF ADD A RULE TO THIS — IT FOLLOWS THAT YOU HAVE BEEN DRAWN INTO THE BUSINESS
