[¶0] The Will to Invent

> Russian: Воля к изобретательству

[¶1] CIT, from the very beginning of its activity, threw out [put forward] the slogan: “How to Work”.

[¶2] All of its works were saturated with this rigid Installation [установка: also setting, set]. CIT did not want to astonish with a new plan of work, nor did CIT put forward any technical miracles which could have astonished the Russian simpletons and [those] carried away by the new technical romanticism.

[¶3] The image of the machine always hovered before CIT, but CIT wanted all the time to build its work with a perspective towards the machine, wanted to permeate with its machine approach not only work under the most perfect equipment, but — as has been declared by us many times — under such conditions as when one has to work with whatever is at hand.

[¶4] Even upon the new technology, upon the new perfect machine, CIT set out its own particular view. It held that the most perfect machine will not help if there is not born a new type of worker who will be devoted with his whole soul to this machine, who will spread the tendency of machinism onto every bolt, onto every chock [block of wood], and will strive to make out of everything most imperfect [something] perfect, even if by a few degrees, rather than dream of new “overseas” luxurious machines.

[¶5] CIT proclaimed the slogan of untiring creativity, stopping before nothing — to remake everything that exists, and to compel [it] to work in a new fashion. CIT asserted that the basic, general task is the creation of a new type of working-man [работник: one who works, of any rank], be it a worker, be it a director or an engineer. The question is posed thus: it is necessary to infect all the enormous popular masses with the untiring demon of inventing, with an inexhaustible thirst for more perfect Installations out of that chaos, out of those ruins, in which one has to work.

[¶6] CIT strove to plant everywhere small, scattered Organizers who would infect current reality with incessant [lit. never-silent] work, with constant creativity, sometimes in good conditions, sometimes in unbearably foul ones.

[¶7] CIT held that by way of the creation of a new living human apparatus, with a new cultural Installation — [it] will give birth to a new generation of inventors, active, bold, not only dreamers but also realisers of the deed.

[¶8] CIT said precisely this: that Installation comes first of all. If you like — what is important is not the machine itself, but the Installation towards the machine in everything. Paraphrasing the well-known words of Lessing, we declared that what is important is not the possession of the machine, but the striving towards it.

*Note: Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Eine Duplik (1778): it is not the possession of truth but the striving towards it that constitutes the worth of a man.*

[¶9] If the popular masses, if the Working Class, the engineerdom [the engineers as a body], all the managers will be infected with this restless constructive demon, then absolutely nothing is frightening for this revolutionary people which populates the USSR.

[¶10] We are creating, to the measure of [our] forces, a new generation of installers of machines, installers of transport, installers of the processing flow and, finally, installers of living people.

[¶11] No excuses about hopelessness have any meaning for us. If before us there is the most perfect machine-automaton, then even then we will ask ourselves — but is it not possible to do still more than this machine — is it not possible to impart to it new speeds, so that even, perhaps, insignificant new Installations would make it still better.

[¶12] And if before us there is a simple stone and a sledgehammer — we will in exactly the same way ponder over how to impart to this simple work the most productive rhythm.

[¶13] To compel the working-man to ponder over his most imperfect blow [stroke] and in this way to call forth an inexhaustible striving towards creation, so as literally to give birth, perhaps out of nothing, to a machine.

[¶14] That is why in our work there was always an Installation towards incessant construction and inventing, and not towards romanticism, which so long fusses [lit. carries itself about] with an idea and never can arrive at the model and untiringly reconstruct this model, achieving its precise production effect.

[¶15] We wish here to explain ourselves more fully. We call to inventing, to that very inventing which, after the pattern of Edison, will not stop before the fact that its first apparatus will be mounted out of simple tin cans.

[¶16] We appeal to the inventor who does not talk, but astonishes with the forms of his model.

[¶17] In our formulary [record-form] there must not be an entry of his conception. In the formulary there must be noted the model, its drawing, its defiant reality.

[¶18] THE YOUNG-MASTER WHITE-HANDS [one who shuns dirty work] IS INCLINED TO CHATTER ENDLESSLY. THE STUBBORN FACTORY ORGANIZER, EVEN WITH POOR EQUIPMENT, WILL WIN THROUGH HIS ORGANISATIONAL KNACK

[¶19] Our slogan astonished many by its extremity. Indeed, we said:

[¶20] — “Mounters [fitters]! Here is a burnt-out country for you. In your bags are two nails and a stone. Having this — erect a city!”

[¶21] The machine romantics, who carried within themselves not the producer but the consumer of this machine, called us primitivists. They said — “Where are you going?.. It is necessary to steer a course for America, it is necessary to steer a course for the most perfect production.” — And we answered them — precisely a course for this. And the whole matter lies in this course, and not at all in obtaining a ready machine and, with the charge [зарядка: as of a battery or a gun] of a consumer, spoiling it at the first opportunity instead of perfecting it.

[¶22] We said that ours is not only a course for America, but a course for an entirely new country, which will take all that there is in America and apply it in those heavy, beggarly conditions in which our revolutionary country finds itself.

[¶23] We would wish here to quote the thoughts of an American engineer who has passed through fire and water in America. He fled after 1905 from the persecutions of the Tsarist government and now has an enormous name in America.

[¶24] Here is what he writes:

> Russian:

[¶25] “American engineers also note that the Russians spend so much time on theory that there is none of it left over for the practical application of their excellent projects. They assert that the Russians very easily fall into despair at the slightest obstacle, at a shortage of instruments and poor equipment. And indeed, the American engineer, who is accustomed to create even in the desert, who still remembers California, the Klondike, etc., — can use a frying pan instead of a spirit level and a pair of glasses [tumblers] instead of an astrolabe. And even now, in our days, some engineer in Mexico has at his disposal nothing except a guide, a revolver and several instruments which his mule is in a condition to carry. And meanwhile this land owes all its astonishing progress to the ability of American engineers to work in the desert just as under the highest equipment.”

[¶26] So that is how it is. We spoke of a burnt-out country, and this engineer speaks of the desert… We spoke of nails and stones — he speaks of an iron frying pan…

[¶27] We wrote these words in 1922. He wrote his words in 1925…

[¶28] So listen, then, inventors!

[¶29] The matter is not in dreaming of an unrealisable machine, but the matter is in having an inexhaustible will to inventing. The matter is in never appealing for a handout. The matter is in never shedding tears over hopelessness.

[¶30] The whole matter is only in the restless creative will, which always wants the object, and not entreaty, which always wants the model, and not the conception.

[¶31] Our slogan — a stubborn Installation towards victory, stopping before nothing. Construct out of that material which there is, or else out of that material which must be obtained at whatever price.

[¶32] We precisely need such active broad masses of inventors, and it is necessary [to put] aside all those who only fuss with an idea and cannot give a thing.

[¶33] DO NOT PESTER WITH YOUR INVENTION, DO NOT BUSTLE ABOUT, BUT AT WHATEVER COST TRANSMUTE IT INTO A THING!

[¶34] KEEP SILENT ABOUT THE WIDE SWEEP — SHOW YOURSELF ON A NARROW BASE
