How to Invent?
If anyone speaks seriously of the Scientific Organisation of Labour, he must know this: in order to carry it out, it is necessary without fail to be an Inventor.
Let us suppose that today we have assimilated all the rules of the Scientific Organisation of Labour. We know well what the Taylor System is, we have superbly assimilated what normalisation [standardisation] is, but in order to approach some concrete work, [to approach] this work of normalisation, and under all conditions to carry out there the principles of the Scientific Organisation of Labour, for this it is obligatory to be an Inventor.
Properly speaking, all the great people who worked out the principles of the Scientific Organisation of Labour were Inventors. An Inventor was Gilbreth, an Inventor was Ford. But the very same can be said also of each rank-and-file man who will carry out this organisation. For the whole matter consists in how to join the very simple principle of order and calculation (the Scientific Organisation of Labour) with a wholly concrete actuality [reality]. As soon as we have collided with this actuality, the question is posed thus: that it is obligatorily necessary to invent, obligatorily necessary to find a way out of the situation, obligatorily necessary to calculate and to create a wholly new combination, a wholly new order of work, new fixtures, new instruments; in a word, it is necessary so to ad-just one-self that, without fail, something to the highest degree important [and] practical is contrived.1
1Gastev hyphenates при-но-ро-вить-ся (to adjust oneself, to get the knack of something, to fit oneself to conditions) syllable by syllable, as if drawing out or stamping the word; the hyphenation is reproduced.
From this it is clear that it is necessary for each who will seriously speak of the Scientific Organisation of Labour, it is necessary for each to be, if only a small one, but an Inventor.
And so, in order to be an Inventor, there is required:
UNBENDING ENERGY, FINE OBSERVATIONALITY [power of observation], ANALYSIS, MEMORY, IMAGINATION, FANTASY.
