[¶0] Fixtures [приспособления: also devices, adaptations] in Work

> Russian: Приспособления в работе

[¶1] In this chapter it would be desirable to give simple organisational advice to every worker, be it a sweeper, a fitter, a mechanic, a factory director or an office clerk.

[¶2] It is necessary for every worker to achieve in work precision, so that the thing comes out of a determined, required size, and speed, so that the thing is produced speedily.

[¶3] This booklet speaks mainly of how to arrange work organisationally. And so it would be desirable to strike harder at the question of fixtures in work.

[¶4] If you want your thing to be precise and to be produced speedily, it is necessary to make fixtures. It is not necessary to frighten yourself with [the notion] that fixtures must be very complex. If you examine attentively all the fixtures in machine-tools, in any machine, then you will see that each fixture can consist of the following three parts: template, director and driver.

[¶5] A template must be the name for such a fixture as precisely determines the place of an object during work. If you do roofing work, for example a pipe, then the block [болванка: mandrel, former] on which you work the thing is at the same time also its template. It precisely indicates the place where the object being worked must be laid, [the object] which must be struck.

[¶6] If you need to drill a hole, and moreover several times in a row, then in order not to err in the distance between the holes it is necessary to install a template for holes (it is sometimes called a jig [кондуктор, literally: conductor]), which will precisely determine the place where to make the given hole.

[¶7] Any folder into which incoming papers are filed is a template, which precisely determines the place where the given paper must be laid.

[¶8] The template precisely determines the order of the arrangement of objects. Consequently, to introduce several templates means to produce the organisation of the work-place.

[¶9] Templates are scattered literally throughout all machine-tools. There is a template for the cutter, there is a template for the centres, the chuck and the headstock, and the centres themselves are a template for the blank being worked.

[¶10] One can arrange a template very imprecisely, approximately, or one can, on the contrary, make it so that your thing being worked enters the template precisely.

[¶11] If you needed to make it so that the given thing not only occupied a determined place but also remained completely motionless, then this is achieved likewise by a special template.

[¶12] Incidentally, for example, the vice in which material is clamped during work is at the same time a template for this material.

[¶13] We will not speak in more detail of the template; we pass now to the director.

[¶14] If the template precisely determines the place, then the director already determines the line of motion of the material during work. In all machine-tools the director plays the chief role. For example, the support [slide rest, carriage] travels along the director. If it did not go along the director, then, understandably, such a precise line of turning would not be obtained.

[¶15] But in hand work too the director plays an enormous role. As is known, the ruler is the director in the ruling of paper.

[¶16] Directors of every kind have significance, I repeat, for hand work as well. The introduction of these directors already brings simple work closer to machine work.

[¶17] ALL THE WEALTH OF PROCESSING FIXTURES CAN BE REDUCED TO THREE TYPES:

[¶18] TEMPLATES, PRECISELY DETERMINING PLACE,

[¶19] DIRECTORS, PRECISELY DETERMINING THE DIRECTION OF MOTION,

[¶20] DRIVERS, BRINGING INTO MOTION.

[¶21] UNTIL NOW THEY HAVE BEEN APPLIED TO THE INSTRUMENT, AND TO THE MATERIAL BEING PROCESSED.

[¶22] LET US APPLY THEM TO THE WORKER — LET US BEGIN THE MACHINISATION OF LABOUR

[¶23] In fact, if you have a template and a director, then for you the place and direction of your motion are determined. Therefore even in the most primitive, especially monotonous work, try to introduce templates and directors of your motion, regardless of whether this be the motion of the left hand or the right.

[¶24] The last fixture, which makes out of our fixtures a regular [veritable, downright] machine, — this is the driver.

[¶25] The driver can be the very simplest. For example, the driver can move the material being processed simply by the force of its own gravity [weight]. If you, for example, in mass work build a chute in an inclined position, then the thing being processed will roll down simply by the force of its own gravity. In this way we will obtain a natural motor for the moving of things.

[¶26] There are drivers — as, for example, in the weaving machine-tool — where the shuttle is pushed by an auxiliary mechanism. And, finally, the very highest form of drivers is, of course, the motor.

[¶27] So, if you do hand work and introduce a template, this will help you to work speedily and precisely in a fixed place. If you fit a director, — this means that you will make your own motions speedy and precise. And if you introduce the driver as well, then out of your primitive work you will make almost a machine.

[¶28] Consequently, the basic kinds of fixtures will be these: template, director and driver.

[¶29] And every time you set about work, you must ask yourself: and can a template not be attached, and can a director not be attached, and can, finally, a driver not be attached.

[¶30] TO COPY OUT, TO LICK OFF, TO COPY — THAT IS A TRIFLE OF A JOB [ПУСТЯКИ ДЕЛОВ: deliberately substandard speech], BUT TO ADAPT [ONESELF] TO A NEW JOB — THERE ONE MUST INVENT
