[¶0] What Is NOT?

> Russian:

[¶1] Many, having already preliminarily acquainted themselves with the foundations of the Scientific Organisation of Labour, nevertheless ask: what is the Scientific Organisation of Labour? We want now briefly, popularly, to tell in two words what sort of thing this is.

[¶2] The Scientific Organisation of Labour — means calculated organisation.

[¶3] The whole matter lies precisely in calculation. True, calculation in labour existed before as well: it was calculated how much it costs, and it was calculated in how much time any thing whatsoever could be made. The Scientific Organisation of Labour makes this calculation the most precise and the most minute. Consequently, of it one can say that it is a precisely calculated organisation of labour.

[¶4] Now let us say in brief how, then, it is carried out.

[¶5] And here is how. For millennia, from case to case, people learned to work, re-made work otherwise, re-built work, and in the end the science of the trade took shape. But all the same, every country worked in its own way, every handicraftsman invented his own modes of work. And now the time has come when all these modes we preliminarily study, then every mode and every grip [приём: technique, method] we decompose into separate parts, these parts are then compared with one another, and then we choose which of them is better.

[¶6] After this, out of these parts we build special series, and, finally, we so arrange these series that there should be the most economical work, that there should be the least time, that there should be the least fatigue and, finally, that the work itself should be the most precise.

[¶7] Here is wherein the essence of the Scientific Organisation of Labour lies.

[¶8] IF YOU WANT TO INTRODUCE NOT, BECOME A MASTER OF AT LEAST ONE OPERATION, CALCULATE IT AND GIVE IT ACCELERATION. THEN YOU WILL SPEAK WITH FACTS, AND NOT WITH ROTE-CRAMMING

[¶9] All this work can be produced almost without any instrument whatsoever, having at one's disposal only the most ordinary pocket watch. And further, if this work arouses interest, if at the very first stages it yields gains, then instead of the watch we will take a chronometer, which will calculate time with a precision not only to the minute, but to the second and even to one hundredth part of a second.

[¶10] Then, of course, the whole of the work will be visible as if under a glass cap [bell-jar], and every trifle which we formerly did not notice will be on account [registered].

[¶11] The Scientific Organisation of Labour has to deal not only with the mode of work, not only with dead material, not only with the machine; it has to deal also with man. It looks upon man too as upon a machine, but only the very best of the machines that exist in the world.

[¶12] IF YOU WANT TO LEARN TO WORK — KNOW:

[¶13] YOUR FIRST TRIALS,

> Russian:

[¶14] THE FIRST ATTEMPTS,

> Russian:

[¶15] THE FIRST EXERCISES —

> Russian:

[¶16] ARE THE DEAREST [most precious, most costly].

> Russian:

[¶17] IT IS PRECISELY IN THE FIRST DAYS THAT YOU

[¶18] GIVE YOURSELF A GENERAL INSTALLATION [установка: also setting, set],

[¶19] CREATE HABIT,

> Russian:

[¶20] WORK OUT AN APPROACH,

> Russian: ВЫРАБАТЫВАЕШЬ ПОДХОД,

[¶21] TEMPER [harden] THE WILL.

> Russian:

[¶22] AND THEREFORE

> Russian:

[¶24] THINK OVER HOW YOU TAKE THE INSTRUMENT IN YOUR HANDS,

[¶25] DETERMINE YOUR STANCE, THE SEATING [fit] OF YOUR BODY,

[¶26] WATCH OVER THE EYE AND GIVE IT LIGHT, CONVENIENT WORK,

[¶27] LEARN TO BRING YOUR GRIP TO PERFECTION

[¶28] The Scientific Organisation of Labour strives to conserve the forces of the worker, to make it so that he would work as long as possible, would not tire, and at the same time would work productively.

[¶29] It must be said that the skilful Organizer is he who can unfold the business in compressed positions [conditions]: in a limited piece of time, on a very limited, small space, with a small quantity of instruments and with limited material. Moreover, he will often have to translate time into space, to translate space into time. With a shortage of instrument, he must find a way out in other material. With a shortage of material — in the instrument.

[¶30] FOR CENTURIES, FROM CASE TO CASE, MODES OF WORK TOOK SHAPE. THESE MODES WE NOW DECOMPOSE INTO PARTS, COMPOSE KINDRED SERIES, COMPACT AND ECONOMISE
