[¶0] Equipment and NOT

> Russian:

[¶1] Many think that the Scientific Organisation of Labour [НОТ] can be introduced only with very good equipment. In fact, this is not true. The Scientific Organisation of Labour can be introduced in a very perfected factory, in which there will be machine-automata, but it can be introduced also in any shelter [hut of branches], in any ravine.

[¶2] It is necessary to remember that the chief quality which is required of the worker in the Scientific Organisation of Labour — this is extreme thrift [sparingness], thrift of material and thrift of human energy. And indeed such thrift can be carried out anywhere at all.

[¶3] So that this should be clear, we want to explain it on one, as it seems to us, vivid example. It is known that good factories work with cutters, milling cutters, grinding machines, steam hammers, hydraulic presses and mechanical traction. But note that all this — both the cutters and the steam hammers appeared not at once. They developed gradually out of the most primitive tools. In fact, it can be said that the grandfather of all these perfected tools is the axe.

[¶4] In the working part of the axe 2 parts can be distinguished: the blade and the butt [poll]. If you look well at the blade, then precisely it, constituting out of itself the form of a knife, — gradually perfecting itself, arrived at that which is now known under the name of the cutter, which is prepared out of high-speed [rapid-cutting] steel. If the axe was once adapted, chiefly, for wood, then the cutter is now adapted for the hardest metal and can work even at a temperature of around 600 degrees — and does not undergo, in so doing, changes harmful for work. Exactly so with respect to the butt. It can be said that its very close relative — this is the hammer. This very butt and hammer, gradually developing and perfecting themselves, created in the end all the striking and pressing machines in the factories, so that we do not yet know what will happen in the not-distant future with the cutter and the hammer: perhaps they will be replaced by perfected machines of such a kind that they will be just as laughable to us as the axe is laughable before the face of the steam hammer and the cutter.

[¶5] The development of the machine goes on unceasingly, but let us put the question in reverse. If we sat with only the axe, if we sat with only the hammer and the simplest instruments, is it really impossible to bring order into such instruments? Let us take the example of that same axe. Indeed, the handle of the axe in some axes goes completely straight, at a right angle to the cutting part of the axe, while in other axes it goes at an inclination. Such an instrumental people [a people of tool-makers] as the Swedes have worked out in detail the construction of this very axe and in the end found the most advantageous inclination of the handle. Exactly as the Swedes, so the Americans too pondered the question: what, then, must the slope of the blade be for various kinds of work. It turns out that if we are to speak with respect to work with hand instruments [tools], then some change of the handle, a change in the blade, will save us force several times over.

[¶6] Exactly so that same axe. If its handle is completely straight, as with factory hammers, then during work, when the man grows tired, his hand will no longer hold the axe so firmly, and it will tear itself out. If, however, at the end of the axe handle a curvature inward is made, then the hand will feel itself much calmer and, of course, with such an axe we can work longer. From this it is clear that we have to ponder simple instruments much more than perfected machines. If we make some perfection to a machine, then the machine will give us, of course, a great effect, but every perfection of simple instruments will give a more striking effect.

[¶7] And so, it must be thought that the Scientific Organisation of Labour can be introduced everywhere under any and all-whatsoever conditions. Even if we, for example, were digging earth in a vegetable garden, we would immediately need to ponder the form of the spade, we would need to ponder how low one's own body must be bent, to ponder what width the beds must be so that they could be watered better, more economically, faster, weeded more economically and faster, or if we even began today to cart manure onto the field, then there too we would have to try to apply the principle of the Scientific Organisation of Labour. We would ponder which is more advantageous to do: to let the horse go along the strip and during its motion scatter manure on the field from behind, or else from time to time to stop and scatter manure around the cart. We would see that the one and the other method differ sharply from one another, [that] the one and the other method cost time and money. And therefore there too, in simple surroundings, in the field, where there is nothing except earth and such a simple thing as manure, which is scattered with an ordinary pitchfork, there too the Scientific Organisation of Labour can be introduced. If, at that, there in the field, we have at our disposal a clock [watch], and if we keep track by it, then, of course, notwithstanding that we will be dealing only with earth, with a horse, with manure and pitchfork, we will obtain a not-at-all-bad laboratory of the Scientific Organisation of Labour.

[¶8] LOOK AT THE MACHINE-TOOL. CREATE THE MACHINE-ORGANISATION
