[¶0] Craft and Contemporary Industry

[¶1] In contemporary industry there is observed a struggle of two methods — the craft method and the method of machine-mass production. These two tendencies do not always step forward distinctly. Their difference is capturable only in certain constructions, in completely indisputably expressed articles, or else in those tools [орудия] which represent one or another tendency. However, an inexperienced eye can always mix up the articles or tools characteristic of trade, and the tools or articles characteristic of contemporary rapid-mass production.

[¶2] Still less capturable is the difference in methods. Properly speaking, trade differs from contemporary rapid-mass production chiefly by its working and organisational methods. Organisational science — a young movement [motion], it is in fact living through the first decade of its formation and has not yet composed itself into a completed doctrine; therefore a sharp delimitation of the craft method from the machine-mass one, even in details devoted specially to organisational science, is not produced with sharp decisiveness.

[¶3] If, however, attention is turned to contemporary factory empirics, then very often there step forward side by side both the craft method and the method of rapid-mass production. You can see how at a contemporary advanced factory, alongside a vividly expressed methodology of rapid-mass production, there step forward such craft anachronisms which are truly representatives of the XVIII century.

[¶4] But still more uncapturable [elusive] is the methodological difference in the contemporary psychology both of the leaders [directors] of production and of the Proletariat. You can see how a worker working at a factory of mass production is in essence situated in an ineradicable psychological opposition to its methods and all the time thinks, organises and regulates exclusively as a tradesman. And this is no wonder. For contemporary rapid-mass production had to complete [staff] its working composition out of those districts which were characteristic as handicraft-craft districts and craft centres. The Worker-tradesman of the highest qualification, upon entering a contemporary factory of rapid-mass production, ordinarily turns out to be extremely useful to it. Strange as it may be, the factory can hold itself upon these tradesmen, as though buying them in order to negate them in the near future, in order in the near future to displace them completely and replace them with a completely new Proletariat, characteristic of rapid-mass production.

[¶5] If we do not establish the characteristic traits of trade, or, at the least, if we are not constantly on guard against the craft breakthroughs of the psychology of the contemporary Proletariat, if we are not constantly ready for the fact that under the flag of a high qualification of knowledge of production a given worker will in essence represent the tendencies of the XVIII or the beginning of the XIX century, then we shall play an extremely foul trick [on ourselves]. The whole difficulty of the position consists in the fact that it falls [to us] to construct a new doctrine of work, to construct the very newest method of work, upon the base of a definite empirics, and, unfortunately, the bearers of this empirics are the most qualified workers, precisely the bearers of trade, of the craft secret. And here precisely it will be necessary to note those exceptionally enlightened units who with an open heart can bury (from them burials are required every day, every hour) their past and bury it — mercilessly.

[¶6] Let us lay bare those characteristic traits of craftsmanship which exist in the craft Proletariat.

[¶7] Operational universalism, this constant readiness “for any case” to arrive in time with a definite skill [умение] and with a definite knowledge — is characteristic of the tradesman. The tradesman is characterised by the accumulation of concrete, sometimes in the highest degree whimsical cases [казусы: incidents], frequently inherent only to a given tradesman, for he had such a case in his life. This universality, which is very similar to practical resourcefulness, is extremely characteristic of the tradesman. Properly speaking, craft service [length of service] is measured not in years, but in decades. 40 years of trade — this is a comparatively small term in order to be acquainted with various sorts of working cases. To this there is opposed in rapid-mass production the growing specialisation of work, the growing universalism in the transition from machine-tool to machine-tool. But here there will be far fewer of those practical unregulated cases which the tradesman knows and which are characteristic of his universalism.

[¶8] Alongside this, if it is possible so to express it, case-universalism, there is characteristic the universalism of the working place. With the tradesman the working place is adapted for all cases of his work. The tradesman does not know so-called special machine-tools, special working places. He must twist out of the position, bend himself into three perditions [bend double], but precisely there where he sits, there where he works, chained for ever, — he must come out of the position that has formed. To him there is opposed in contemporary mass factories the strict specialisation of working places, of working machine-tools and of all the fixtures which are characteristic of work, a universalism of equipment so complete that the tradesman absolutely cannot make out what is a fixture for the production of a given work and what is universal equipment. Solid empiricism, the constant piling-up of one practice upon another, aversion to any systematics of this practice, aversion to a code of all those laws of his own labour which are characteristic of him, — to all this in new production there is opposed strict scientificness, the experimental derivation of all the laws of processing production, their reduction into definite norms, their reduction into definite graphs. It is fully natural, as a definite consequence of what has just been said, that for the tradesman there is characteristic the “secret.” His whole life is a solid conspiracy against other tradesmen, it is a solid conspiracy against all the uninitiated in general, who do not know how to come out of a position in a given case. The tradesman loves nothing that would be expressed in a strictly defined schedule, in a strictly defined regulation of his work. He absolutely does not tolerate the Installation [установка: also setting, set] of his work being visible to all. In essence he is a conspirator and always prides himself on the fact that precisely he, exclusively he, knows this. In rapid-mass production to all this there is opposed an all-exposing documentation, expressed in drawings, diagrams, instructions, in exact records and sketches of that equipment which is necessary for work. Properly speaking, the entire sense of contemporary rapid-mass production, in its opposition to trade, consists in this solid exposure of the secrets of those tradesmen whose days are becoming fewer and fewer, whose days are numbered.

[¶9] For the tradesman there is characteristic, as a derivation from the previous, the fact that all his knowledge and all his skills he, as he expresses it, “holds in his head.” The tradesman is difficult to force to express in a definite instruction that which he knows, since he nourishes an aversion to all instructions, to every external organisational formulation of work, for after all they might “whistle away” [steal] his secret. Hence for the tradesman there is characteristic an organisational slovenliness staggering to contemporary man, an organic intolerance to external order, an organic intolerance to the regulation and exact scheduling of separate operations, separate grips [приёмы: techniques, methods], an organic protest against every regulation of work, as against “intelligentsia-ism and bourgeoisness.” All this is characteristic of the tradesman. Rapid-mass production is characterised, on the contrary, by clearly expressed organisational formulation, by the distinct disposition of equipment, the distinct disposition of material and, finally, by the distinctness of completely disclosed methods of work. Craft production in itself is extremely conservative, individualistic and anti-social. It decomposes at the root every sort of joint work, it is a barbaric challenge to the whole of contemporary evolution, and it is necessary to apply incredible efforts in order to counteract this craftsmanship, sometimes covered over by the newest organisational tendencies such as NOT [Scientific Organisation of Labour] and others.

[¶10] For contemporary trade there is characteristic the limitedness of its production. In fact, whatever may be said, that the tradesman produces pins, that the tradesman produces nails — where is he in his productivity to equal those trillions of shells which were produced during the war, where is he to equal those sextillions of bullets which were produced during the war, and those thousands of sextillions of nails, rivets, cotters, which were produced and are being produced by rapid-mass production.

[¶11] For contemporary rapid-mass production there is extremely characteristic the presence of ever-growing fixtures, of various sorts of constructions, which are auxiliary either in manual work or in machine work, which grow into a completely independent world, a particular production kinematics, terribly mobile, easily adaptable, sometimes special, sometimes universal. All this is precisely what is characteristic of mass production. The tradesman does not love this expanding world of constructive fixtures. He is ready, especially the handicraftsman, to make fixtures sooner out of his own sleeve, or else to content himself with that primitive blank which he has at hand. The combination of executive functions with the managerial and organisational function is characteristic of the tradesman. He gives no one the right to manage him, he will yield to no one the right to execute; both the one and the other he considers his right, — the right to manage he considers his honour, the right to execute he considers his secret.

[¶12] For the tradesman there was characteristic an enamouredness with measure, an enamouredness with the universal measuring instrument, with the arshin, with the metre, which he constantly carried in his pocket, with which he constantly had to “size up” [estimate by eye], whereas in the work of rapid-mass production there is characteristic absolutely not this concrete universal measuring instrument, but for it there is characteristic the template, for it there is characteristic the gauge, for it there are characteristic the patterns.

[¶13] The contemporary instrument of rapid-mass production is the mechanical grip of the object being processed. And the highest expression of these instruments, known under the name of limit gauges, is such a fine and at the same time exact concept, with which, of course, the instrument of the tradesman cannot compare.

[¶14] The craftsman, having in his pocket a metre, having in his pocket an arshin, is undoubtedly an individualist; he constantly seizes the individual measure in the object, he constantly seizes the changes characteristic of a given thing, whereas the labourer of rapid-mass production works according to norms, works according to standards.

[¶15] Gauges, patterns and templates — these are precisely those instruments which gestate in contemporary rapid-mass production one or another separate standard, one or another separate norm; whereas the tradesman, with his pitiful metre and universal instrument in his pocket, all the time wants to fish out in contemporary production an original secret, some mystery inaccessible to the entire mass of workers. Hence in the newest rapid-mass production there is such attention to analysis, to the drawing, the schema, the diagrams, the graph, such attention to every sort of reconstruction; in the tradesman, however, there exists literally an organic hatred towards this analysis, towards this drawing, towards this schema and diagram. Contemporary rapid-mass production is, undoubtedly, a synthesis of the laboratory with trade, whereas trade — is only trade.

[¶16] Hence — the most characteristic thing that distinguishes the tradesman from the worker of rapid-mass production. Consider how much literature is devoted to the question of whether, in the training of labour habits, it is necessary to prepare so-called utilitarian things or not necessary. Is it necessary, for example, to work up a flat-iron, a hammer, callipers, pincers, etc. Of course, already the question itself, under whatever flag it might be brought forward, in itself from head to foot gives away the tradesman. For contemporary rapid-mass production is never executed as so-called utilitarian. The contemporary worker of rapid-mass production is interested in work predominantly in the very method of work. If, however, he is interested not in the method of work, but in the expression of this method in work, then for him there exist definite standards, standards of actions. If he speaks of the method of work, then with him there constantly figure such words as cutting, milling, drilling, chiselling, soldering, etc., whereas the tradesman will always emphasise to you that precisely he produced a flat-iron, precisely he produced a hammer, callipers, or, for example, he produced a mechanical jumping flea.

[¶17] If it were necessary for us to formulate for the needs of CIT [ЦИТ, Central Institute of Labour] certain delimitations in works, then we could admit only a delimitation into imitational works, by which we teach, and natural works, in which we conduct the final period of training. We absolutely do not use the word “utilitarian,” as extremely dangerous, for it can end in Zaidel’s hammer and flat-iron.

[¶18] It does no harm to turn attention in this respect to such phenomena which, perhaps, are familiar to our qualified metal-workers, but have insufficiently drawn their attention upon themselves. For it is not long ago that the test at a factory was made precisely thus: to make callipers, to make a hammer, to make pincers, whereas in recent times, even before the war, the test consisting in the so-called “dovetail,” or the test under the name “nut into nut,” conquered the right of citizenship. At the base of this there is placed exclusively the method of work, a definite standard of the combination of planes and round or sometimes oval surfaces.

[¶19] The “dovetail” and the “nut into nut” represent a test on methods of work; they represent out of themselves a test on the assembly of a finished utilitarian thing. Consequently, contemporary rapid-mass production in such decisive moments, when enormous masses of qualified workers are needed, put out such a test where the methodics of work was identified, but did not produce things where a crude utilitarianism of work was manifested. Sometimes at a factory they give [the task] to make simply a groove and to fit to this groove a cotter by anything other than a file. Still before the war the following was practised: a simple nut was clamped in a vice; this nut is completely ground down on its upper and reverse side; the worker being accepted had to file this nut. If he spoils this nut with his strokes, he has not held out the trial. If, however, he gives exact parallel planes — he is accepted. We must especially emphasise the significance of such trials and, especially, of the standards [эталоны: reference models] of these trials, upon which CIT at present fixes its attention.

[¶20] There is widespread the opinion that supposedly for contemporary production and for the so-called scientific organisation of labour there is characteristic work by operations. Nothing of the sort! Work by operations, as is known, was exalted already by Adam Smith. Work by operations was known also from antiquity — both the strictly calculated operation and the strictly calculated work. For contemporary rapid-mass production there is characteristic not work by operations, but the methodology of the working grip [рабочий приём] in its pure form, applicable to a thousand things. For contemporary rapid-mass production there are characteristic precisely the standards of grips, the norms of grips, whether they be expressed in manual work or in machine work.

[¶21] We should especially like, for a greater fixation of our thoughts, to turn attention to the craft secret. It would be possible to bring forward a long martyrology of these exposed secrets. In recent times science has undermined [dug under] the most concealed secrets of this proud boastful trade. By science in the given case it is not necessary to understand some exactly elaborated discipline. The contemporary factory is characterised precisely by the fact that in its very organisation it conceals a strict scientificness. This scientificness consists in the fact that it sets up a completely previously unknown mass rejection [браковка: the sorting-out of rejects]. Precisely the latter: these gauges, patterns, every sort of single-dimensioned and exact instruments, normal or else with a tolerance, permit the production of a selection of exact work which was not previously known to any absolutely craft production.

[¶22] If at factories of rapid-mass production there is produced a rejection at the operation, a repeated rejection, a control rejection, a selective rejection or, finally, a final acceptance rejection, then it is possible to imagine to oneself what an enormous contingent of rejectors [inspectors] contemporary rapid-mass production contains and what a responsible part of the entire organisation of the factory rejection constitutes. In its unfolded form rejection is nothing else — we say this completely definitely and in italics, — it is nothing else than a laboratory method of production. In that moment when at a factory there appear exact single-dimensioned gauges, exact single-dimensioned measurers, the factory transforms itself into a laboratory with exact accounting, with exact curves, with the most perfected diagrams. Here there can no longer be, without doubt, any secrets; here the very organisation of rapid-mass production transforms itself into an enormous operating [acting] scientific “Institute of Production” with grandiose laboratories. It is precisely this contemporary rejection, in which many have probably grown up, but to which they still pay insufficient attention, that is the most revolutionary step characteristic of contemporary production. Precisely this rejection is in recent times that factor of the dethronement of contemporary production, before which all so-called inventings, all patents, all personal ambitions fly to the devils, which has already crushed not one thousand and not one ten-thousand of every sort of inventor and bearer of craft secrets. In fact, for example, the speed of cutting, which formerly was taken by touch, is now laid down in the rulers [slide-rules] of Taylor, Gantt and others, laid down in definite placards located on every purchased machine-tool.

[¶23] The sharpening of cutters, which also was a secret of the worker, the famous hardening [калка: tempering] with all its alchemical grips and expressions at every sort of charging in blast-furnaces and open-hearth furnaces — now all this is handled by any boy. By means of CIT-exposure all the secrets connected with chipping [рубка зубилом: cutting with the chisel], riveting and machine-tool work have been laid bare. Finally, there exists the CIT organisational exposure of work, when the very arrangement and the very equipment of the working place exactly prompt by their external appearance this work. And everyone who is a protestant against this organisational exposure by CIT is in essence a tradesman, a completely hopeless tradesman. In contemporary factories, even in the most perfected, there are still not a few shaded corners where these ambitious tradesmen find themselves shelter with their individualism, with their secrets, with their instructions in their heads. All those little-machinised branches of labour, such as smiths, hardeners, founders, are the most inveterate elements in the factories, who greet with mockery every newcomer, who do not give anything new in this branch. All the toolmakers, who sit upon various sorts of bits and handicraft handiwork, are the most conservative.

[¶24] Especially striking in this respect — which the author has had occasion to observe not only in Russia, but also abroad — is that [a man] once initiated into the mystery of tool-work is condemned for his whole life to walk about with his craft blinkers.

[¶25] Not a few such tradesmen are observed among foremen. What nourishes them in this respect is their role as initiators and inventors: the invention, for example, of some die or other, which makes them in their own eyes possessors of secrets, geniuses of trade. It is precisely for this reason that the new foreman conceived by Taylor is born so slowly.

[¶26] The contemporary foreman either is such an individualist-inventor and constantly wants to replace science with a machine-tool, or else is simply a batman [orderly] sitting about in his place, who serves out the work [as a term is served].

[¶28] Comrade [Т.] Zaidel, under the guise of sympathies for various labour schools, for contemporary production, for so-called work by operation, is, undoubtedly, the most definite Tula tradesman of the XVIII century. And is it for him to argue against this triumphantly marching rapid-mass production with its methods of processing, and not with its method of exalting utilitarian things, such as flat-irons and samovars.

> Russian: Т.
