[¶0] FAUST MARGARET _(passing by)_
FAUST
Fair lady, let it not offend you,
That arm and escort I would lend you!

> German: Faust. Margarete vorübergehend.

FAUST.
Mein schönes Fräulein, darf ich wagen,
Meinen Arm und Geleit Ihr anzutragen?

[¶1] MARGARET
I’m neither lady, neither fair,
And home I can go without your care.

[_She releases herself, and exit_.

> German: MARGARETE.
Bin weder Fräulein, weder schön,
Kann ungeleitet nach Hause gehn.
(Sie macht sich los und ab.)

[¶2] FAUST
By Heaven, the girl is wondrous fair!
Of all I’ve seen, beyond compare;
So sweetly virtuous and pure,
And yet a little pert, be sure!
The lip so red, the cheek’s clear dawn,
I’ll not forget while the world rolls on!
How she cast down her timid eyes,
Deep in my heart imprinted lies:
How short and sharp of speech was she,
Why, ’twas a real ecstasy!

(MEPHISTOPHELES _enters_)

> German: FAUST.
Hat tief sich in mein Herz geprägt;
Wie sie kurz angebunden war,
Das ist nun zum Entzücken gar!
(Mephistopheles tritt auf.)

[¶3] FAUST
Hear, of that girl I’d have possession!

> German: FAUST.
Hör, du mußt mir die Dirne schaffen!

[¶4] MEPHISTOPHELES
Which, then?

> German: MEPHISTOPHELES.
Nun, welche?

[¶5] FAUST
The one who just went by.

> German: FAUST.
Sie ging just vorbei.

[¶6] MEPHISTOPHELES
She, there? She’s coming from confession,
Of every sin absolved; for I,
Behind her chair, was listening nigh.
So innocent is she, indeed,
That to confess she had no need.
I have no power o’er souls so green.

> German: MEPHISTOPHELES.
Da die? Sie kam von ihrem Pfaffen,
Der sprach sie aller Sünden frei
Ich schlich mich hart am Stuhl vorbei,
Es ist ein gar unschuldig Ding,
Das eben für nichts zur Beichte ging;
Über die hab ich keine Gewalt!

[¶7] FAUST
And yet, she’s older than fourteen.

> German: FAUST.
Ist über vierzehn Jahr doch alt.

[¶8] MEPHISTOPHELES
How now! You’re talking like Jack Rake,
Who every flower for himself would take,
And fancies there are no favors more,
Nor honors, save for him in store;
Yet always doesn’t the thing succeed.

> German: MEPHISTOPHELES.
Du sprichst ja wie Hans Liederlich,
Der begehrt jede liebe Blum für sich,
Und dünkelt ihm, es wär kein Ehr
Und Gunst, die nicht zu pflücken wär;
Geht aber doch nicht immer an.

[¶9] FAUST
Most Worthy Pedagogue, take heed!
Let not a word of moral law be spoken!
I claim, I tell thee, all my right;
And if that image of delight
Rest not within mine arms to-night,
At midnight is our compact broken.

> German: FAUST.
Mein Herr Magister Lobesan,
Laß Er mich mit dem Gesetz in Frieden!
Und das sag ich Ihm kurz und gut.
Wenn nicht das süße junge Blut
Heut Nacht in meinen Armen ruht,
So sind wir um Mitternacht geschieden.

[¶10] MEPHISTOPHELES
But think, the chances of the case!
I need, at least, a fortnight’s space,
To find an opportune occasion.

> German: MEPHISTOPHELES.
Bedenkt, was gehn und stehen mag!
Ich brauche wenigstens vierzehn Tag,
Nur die Gelegenheit auszuspüren.

[¶11] FAUST
Had I but seven hours for all,
I should not on the Devil call,
But win her by my own persuasion.

> German: FAUST.
Hätt ich nur sieben Stunden Ruh,
Brauchte den Teufel nicht dazu
So ein Geschöpfchen zu verführen.

[¶12] MEPHISTOPHELES
You almost like a Frenchman prate;
Yet, pray, don’t take it as annoyance!
Why, all at once, exhaust the joyance?
Your bliss is by no means so great
As if you’d use, to get control,
All sorts of tender rigmarole,
And knead and shape her to your thought,
As in Italian tales ’tis taught.

> German: MEPHISTOPHELES.
Ihr sprecht schon fast wie ein Franzos;

[¶13] FAUST
Without that, I have appetite.

> German: FAUST.
Hab Appetit auch ohne das.

[¶14] MEPHISTOPHELES
But now, leave jesting out of sight!
I tell you, once for all, that speed
With this fair girl will not succeed;
By storm she cannot captured be;
We must make use of strategy.

> German: MEPHISTOPHELES.
Jetzt ohne Schimpf und ohne Spaß.
Ich sag Euch, mit dem schönen Kind
Geht’s ein für allemal nicht geschwind.
Mit Sturm ist da nichts einzunehmen;
Wir müssen uns zur List bequemen.

[¶15] FAUST
Get me something the angel keeps!
Lead me thither where she sleeps!
Get me a kerchief from her breast,—
A garter that her knee has pressed!

> German: FAUST.
Schaff mir etwas vom Engelsschatz!
Führ mich an ihren Ruheplatz!
Schaff mir ein Halstuch von ihrer Brust,
Ein Strumpfband meiner Liebeslust!

[¶16] MEPHISTOPHELES
That you may see how much I’d fain
Further and satisfy your pain,
We will no longer lose a minute;
I’ll find her room to-day, and take you in it.

> German: MEPHISTOPHELES.
Damit Ihr seht, daß ich Eurer Pein
Will förderlich und dienstlich sein’
Wollen wir keinen Augenblick verlieren,
Will Euch noch heut in ihr Zimmer führen.

[¶17] FAUST
And shall I see—possess her?

> German: FAUST.
Und soll sie sehn? sie haben?

[¶18] MEPHISTOPHELES
No!
Unto a neighbor she must go,
And meanwhile thou, alone, mayst glow
With every hope of future pleasure,
Breathing her atmosphere in fullest measure.

> German: MEPHISTOPHELES.
Nein! Sie wird bei einer Nachbarin sein.
Indessen könnt Ihr ganz allein
An aller Hoffnung künft’ger Freuden
In ihrem Dunstkreis satt Euch weiden.

[¶19] FAUST
Can we go thither?

> German: FAUST.
Können wir hin?

[¶20] MEPHISTOPHELES
’Tis too early yet.

FAUST
A gift for her I bid thee get!
[_Exit_.

> German: MEPHISTOPHELES.
Es ist noch zu früh.
FAUST.
Sorg du mir für ein Geschenk für sie!
(Ab.)

[¶21] MEPHISTOPHELES
Presents at once? That’s good: he’s certain to get at her!
Full many a pleasant place I know,
And treasures, buried long ago:
I must, perforce, look up the matter. _[Exit_.

VIII

> German: MEPHISTOPHELES.
Gleich schenken? Das ist brav! Da wird er reüssieren!
Ich kenne manchen schönen Platz
Und manchen altvergrabnen Schatz;
Ich muß ein bißchen revidieren.
(Ab.)
