[¶0] MARGARET
(_at the spinning-wheel, alone_)

> German: Gretchen (am Spinnrad, allein).

[¶1]         My peace is gone,
        My heart is sore:
        I never shall find it,
        Ah, nevermore!

> German: GRETCHEN.
Meine Ruh ist hin,
Mein Herz ist schwer;
Ich finde sie nimmer und nimmermehr.

[¶2]         Save I have him near.
        The grave is here;
        The world is gall
        And bitterness all.

> German: Wo ich ihn nicht hab,
Ist mir das Grab,
Die ganze Welt
Ist mir vergällt.

[¶3]         My poor weak head
        Is racked and crazed;
        My thought is lost,
        My senses mazed.

> German: Mein armer Kopf
Ist mir verrückt,
Meiner armer Sinn
Ist mir zerstückt.

[¶4]         My peace is gone,
        My heart is sore:
        I never shall find it,
        Ah, nevermore!

> German: Meine Ruh ist hin,
Mein Herz ist schwer,
Ich finde sie nimmer und nimmermehr.

[¶5]         To see him, him only,
        At the pane I sit;
        To meet him, him only,
        The house I quit.

> German: Nach ihm nur schau ich
Zum Fenster hinaus,
Nach ihm nur geh ich
Aus dem Haus.

[¶6]         His lofty gait,
        His noble size,
        The smile of his mouth,
        The power of his eyes,

> German: Sein hoher Gang,
Sein edle Gestalt,
Seines Mundes Lächeln,
Seiner Augen Gewalt,

[¶7]         And the magic flow
        Of his talk, the bliss
        In the clasp of his hand,
        And, ah! his kiss!

> German: Und seiner Rede
Zauberfluß,
Sein Händedruck,
Und ach! sein Kuß!

[¶8]         My peace is gone,
        My heart is sore:
        I never shall find it,
        Ah, nevermore!

> German: Meine Ruh ist hin,
Mein Herz ist schwer,
Ich finde sie nimmer und nimmermehr.

[¶9]         My bosom yearns
        For him alone;
        Ah, dared I clasp him,
        And hold, and own!

> German: Mein Busen drängt
Sich nach ihm hin,
Ach dürft ich fassen
Und halten ihn,

[¶10]         And kiss his mouth,
        To heart’s desire,
        And on his kisses
        At last expire!

XVI

> German: Und küssen ihn,
So wie ich wollt,
An seinen Küssen
Vergehen sollt!
