[¶0] SERVICE, ORGAN _and_ ANTHEM.
(MARGARET _among much people: the_ EVIL SPIRIT _behind_ MARGARET.)

> German: Amt, Orgel und Gesang. Gretchen unter vielem Volke. Böser Geist hinter
Gretchen.

[¶1] EVIL SPIRIT
HOW otherwise was it, Margaret,
When thou, still innocent,
Here to the altar cam’st,
And from the worn and fingered book
Thy prayers didst prattle,
Half sport of childhood,
Half God within thee!
Margaret!
Where tends thy thought?
Within thy bosom
What hidden crime?
Pray’st thou for mercy on thy mother’s soul,
That fell asleep to long, long torment, and through thee?
Upon thy threshold whose the blood?
And stirreth not and quickens
Something beneath thy heart,
Thy life disquieting
With most foreboding presence?

> German: BÖSER GEIST.
Wie anders, Gretchen, war dir’s,
Als du noch voll Unschuld
Hier zum Altar tratst
Aus dem vergriffnen Büchelchen
Gebete lalltest,
Halb Kinderspiele,
Halb Gott im Herzen!
Gretchen!
Wo steht dein Kopf?
In deinem Herzen
Welche Missetat?
Betst du für deiner Mutter Seele, die
Durch dich zur langen, langen Pein hinüberschlief?
Auf deiner Schwelle wessen Blut?
—Und unter deinem Herzen
Regt sich’s nicht quillend schon
Und ängstet dich und sich
Mit ahnungsvoller Gegenwart?

[¶2] MARGARET
Woe! woe!
Would I were free from the thoughts
That cross me, drawing hither and thither
Despite me!

> German: GRETCHEN.
Weh! Weh!
Wär ich der Gedanken los,
Die mir herüber und hinüber gehen
Wider mich!

[¶3] CHORUS
        _Diesira, dies illa,
        Solvet soeclum in favilla_!
        _(Sound of the organ_.)

> German: CHOR.
Dies irae, dies illa
Solvet saeclum in favilla.
(Orgelton.)

[¶4] EVIL SPIRIT
Wrath takes thee!
The trumpet peals!
The graves tremble!
And thy heart
From ashy rest
To fiery torments
Now again requickened,
Throbs to life!

> German: BÖSER GEIST.
Grimm faßt dich!
Die Posaune tönt!
Die Gräber beben!
Und dein Herz,
Aus Aschenruh
Zu Flammenqualen
Wieder aufgeschaffen,
Bebt auf!

[¶5] MARGARET
Would I were forth!
I feel as if the organ here
My breath takes from me,
My very heart
Dissolved by the anthem!

> German: GRETCHEN.
Wär ich hier weg!
Mir ist, als ob die Orgel mir
Den Atem versetzte,
Gesang mein Herz
Im Tiefsten löste.

[¶6] CHORUS
        _Judex ergo cum sedebit,
        Quidquid latet, ad parebit,
        Nil inultum remanebit_.
MARGARET

> German: CHOR.
Judex ergo cum sedebit,
Quidquid latet adparebit,
Nil inultum remanebit.

[¶7] I cannot breathe!
The massy pillars
Imprison me!
The vaulted arches
Crush me!—Air!

> German: GRETCHEN.
Mir wird so eng!
Die Mauernpfeiler
Befangen mich!
Das Gewölbe
Drängt mich!—Luft!

[¶8] EVIL SPIRIT
Hide thyself! Sin and shame
Stay never hidden.
Air? Light?
Woe to thee!

> German: BÖSER GEIST.
Verbirg dich! Sünd und Schande
Bleibt nicht verborgen.
Luft? Licht?
Weh dir!

[¶9] CHORUS
        _Quid sum miser tunc dicturus,
        Quem patronem rogaturus,
        Cum vix Justus sit securus_?

> German: CHOR.
Quid sum miser tunc dicturus?
Quem patronum rogaturus?
Cum vix justus sit securus.

[¶10] EVIL SPIRIT
They turn their faces,
The glorified, from thee:
The pure, their hands to offer,
Shuddering, refuse thee!
Woe!

> German: BÖSER GEIST.
Ihr Antlitz wenden
Verklärte von dir ab.
Die Hände dir zu reichen,
Schauert’s den Reinen.
Weh!

[¶11] CHORUS
_Quid sum miser tune dicturus_?

MARGARET
Neighbor! your cordial! (_She falls in a swoon_.)

XXI

> German: CHOR.
Quid sum miser tunc dicturus?
GRETCHEN.
Nachbarin! Euer Fläschchen!
(Sie fällt in Ohnmacht.)
