[¶0] In monotheism the inner contradiction of every moralised theology stands out especially brightly. God is absolute good and absolute might, and yet evil exists. That is the absurdity of theism, the source of senseless "theodicies". 20 In order to get out of it, one must inevitably go backwards in the moral respect. Morality has elaborated the concept of the absolute good — that is, of an inwardly harmonious ideal of life, utterly distinct from evil as disharmony, malice and suffering. Man's thirst for the triumph of justice made him proclaim his postulate, his dream, his programme — the good, perfection — proclaim it the king of the world. Only the assurance of the absolute might of the absolute good gave man the possibility of preserving a proud devotion to it and an unshakeable hope of its victory amid the bitter vicissitudes of historical destinies. But if the good is omnipotent — whence evil? One has to muddy again the clear abstract concepts of good and evil, elaborated with such difficulty. Now the good ceases to have the character of good, now evil turns out not to be so very black. God is good, but in his own way, not in a human way. The world is good; if it seems to us bad, that is because it must be good in God's eyes, and by no means in the eyes of limited man. But on this conception the good and love are replaced by mystery, by arbitrary will; moral criticism dies and yields its place to fatalism. The triumph of this principle, which kills culture, thought and living feeling, we see in Islam. "God wills it so." We return to the abysses of slavery. God becomes almost evil. Only the transference of retribution, of the restoration of justice, to the other world still saves God's goodness. But what a pitiful outcome. First, the reward of paradise for the painful comedy of life — and that with hell existing for the bad actors — outrages a highly developed feeling: suffering is not redeemed by subsequent blessedness; if God's omnipotence is admitted, it remains a kind of unnecessary mockery20a; secondly, the transference of the centre of gravity from life into a fantastic existence beyond the grave justifies far too much; it kills all indignation, all protest, it kills all interest in life and makes religion a conservative force, deeply hostile to progress. Saving God's omnipotence, the metaphysicians admitted that a dark principle is concealed in him too, which will, however, be conquered by the light principle. But such a deity, ceasing to be absolutely good, loses its might as well: it becomes a copy of man, and moreover not in the moments of the sensation of might and harmony, but in the moments of inner discord, of the disintegration of the will. This conception morally degrades the deity, making it not the summit of light, love and truth but the enormous shadow of a man struggling with himself. And the guarantee of victory disappears too. If in the course of infinite time the eternal God has not conquered evil, the dark principle in himself, why then should one expect that he will ever achieve the full radiance of light? Mill proposed to save all-goodness at the price of omnipotence. God then is the good in its struggle with evil. That is already frank dualism. Besides muddying the concept of the absolute, whole and pure good, the metaphysicians, in saving monotheism, have recourse also to muddying the concept of evil. Evil is not evil but a kind of good. It is needed as a shadow is needed for the light to stand out, as a purifying school, as an object of struggle that tempers moral energy, and so on. All these are moral falls from the height of absolute moral monotheism. Why is a shadow needed for the light to stand out? For we know what that shadow is — it is sufferings, diseases and death, oppression, malice, executions, tortures; it is a sea of unutterable torment flooding the history of our species and the history of all life.

[¶1] To say that all this is necessary precisely for the greater shining of the good beside it — means, instead of solving the religious question (the question of happiness, perfection and harmony of life), simply to remove it; it means calling the world the best of worlds, in defiance of man's passionate cry: "I do not accept this world." A purifying school, a tempering of energy! But why did God not create everything at once pure and tempered? We shall not forgive him the streams of tears and blood, wherever he may lead us. The doctrine was a great ruse: God suffers himself together with you. To what end? If he is omnipotent, then this is a kind of sport, for he could have attained the goal without suffering, by the simple motion of his boundless will. But if he can attain the preordained goal only at the price of real suffering, then he is not omnipotent — for this precisely is the essence of "non-omnipotence", that the goal cannot be attained without suffering and struggle. And again they return from omnipotence to sufficient might. The good is mighty enough to conquer, but for that struggle is needed. Let this be a dualism with the preponderance of light over darkness. But the question remains: why, if the good is stronger, has it not already conquered in billions of centuries, in the infinity of the past? And one must either stupidly come up against the darkness, at the moment of the origin of the world of struggle and development and of the gods themselves out of something else, or out of nothing, or accept a rotation of the Empedoclean kind: an eternal attainment of the summits of light and a casting down again headlong into the abyss of darkness. And that is already a final dualism, and a hopeless one at that. Why then does human thought beat so fruitlessly? This is easy to understand: the real terms of the dilemma are given us. Man struggles for his ideals against the forces and obstacles standing in the way. That is the indubitable dualism of life. But the instinct of life thirsts for assurance of victory: hence the idea of the omnipotence of the good. Religious assurance of victory sharply contradicts the continuing hard struggle. The religious contradiction is the longing for assurance of victory which cannot be given, for that assurance is guaranteed only by actual victory. Therefore a victory of the good is invented which would be compatible with the continuing struggle.

[¶2] A mind logically ripened, and a proud feeling that permits no domineering over it and no arbitrary will, can preserve religion only by replacing the thirst for assurance with hope and with a tragic affirmation of life as a task, with all its difficulties and doubts.
