[¶0] In all the great and mature religious systems, sometimes in mixed form, sometimes appearing in greater or lesser purity, there are encountered two principles of distinguishing good from evil, in essence opposed to one another. According to which of the two principles triumphs in a given religion, life itself is valued differently. The ideal too acquires — not only in substance but even formally — a completely different character. (a) The whole world of phenomena is held to be evil; the good is salvation out of the world. Life in its fullness (sensation, thought, feeling, action) is rejected as inseparably bound up with the world (evil); only the life of the spirit in its purest manifestations (pure thought) is accepted.

[¶1] Since there exist in general only two places for human hopes — the future, bound up with the world, and the other-worldly, utterly different from the world, utterly spiritual — the future is rejected (acknowledged to be essentially hopeless and equal to the present), and the other-worldly is extolled. This proclamation of pure spirit and of the supersensible world corresponding to it as the single good, utterly different from the world of phenomena, makes such religious systems essentially metaphysical.

[¶2] (b) In the world, everything that causes suffering, destroys life, inflicts damage upon it, is held to be evil. On the contrary, everything that corresponds to the interests of life and its development is acknowledged as good.

[¶3] All life in all its fullness (sensation, thought, feeling, will) is acknowledged as good. Only those passions which harm individual or social life are acknowledged as evil.

[¶4] The world is acknowledged to be improving, and man capable of actively increasing the sum of good and diminishing the sum of evil, and in the end of cleansing the world of it and bringing about the triumph of the single good, pictured as a blessed life amid an illumined nature.

[¶5] The proclamation of the process of the ennobling of man and nature as the meaning of being makes the corresponding religions essentially historical.

[¶6] Translated into the language of pure, mature and honest realism, the metaphysical religions, which deny the whole world, of course lose their ideal (pure spirituality) and lead to the idea of death — that is, they become utterly pessimistic. In the light of science, man must either recoil in horror from the supposed ideal of "pure spirituality", or say loudly: death is better than life.

[¶7] The historical principle, on the contrary, loses nothing by being cleansed of mythology. In the light of scientific consciousness, the historical religions come down to the proclamation of life and of its servant labour as the sole divine thing in the universe.

[¶8] Throughout the whole religious life of humanity down to our own day (and of course this will continue in the near future too) there proceeds a struggle between the two religious principles. Christianity is an illogical, disorderly mixture of both principles, struggling with one another in its depths. It is very important to represent clearly to oneself both forms of religious world-feeling. The best means for this is acquaintance with the two religions which embodied both principles in considerable purity and powerfully influenced the development of the human genius. A brightly typical metaphysical religion is Indian religiosity (namely Brahmanism and its natural continuation, Buddhism). A bright historical religion, the first philosophy of history, is Mazdeism.
