The Bolshevik "God-builder" reads the religions of the world as dreams of a just humanity.

## 23. The Tendencies of Hellenism

Source: https://scriptura.si/works/lunacharsky-rs1/23/ · cite a paragraph as https://scriptura.si/works/lunacharsky-rs1/23/#p-N

[¶0] The Greek deified nature. That is, he loved it to the point of making it a god, of identifying it with his ideal. The Greek humanised nature, gave the cosmic deities the character of ideally human personalities. Thereby he deified man. And moreover man as body and spirit at once. Not will alone, not reason alone, as the Jew did (and later Hellenism), but the whole man, in his kalokagathia, in his beautiful body and good character.

[¶1] But in the present chapter it is not this positive side, flowing from an active love of life, that interests us, but the reverse, negative side. Negative, that is, in our view, of course.

[¶2] The Greek loved nature, we said. But did he not also fear it? Yes, he feared it too. He did not fear the radiant sky, nor the "curly sea", nor the blue-tinged mountains, nor the free forests, but disease, death, misfortune — in general the force of fate that sends calamities.

[¶3] Among almost all peoples there exist myths teaching that self-conceit, pride, the striving for something better — destroys men. The Greeks too arrived at the conviction that presumption and self-conceit are the chief source of sin and unhappiness. They invented the concept of the envy of the gods. One must not be too happy, their myths teach; the gods do not like it. That which later developed into Cynicism — the striving to reduce one's needs in order to diminish suffering — lives constantly in the Greek soul. But in Cynicism moderation itself is immoderate. The Greek of the flowering period wanted moderation to be moderate too. The fear of the immeasurable, the fear of too great a passion, even of too great a wisdom — this was indeed the complete negation of what later received the name of romanticism, that is, the negation of impulse, of that aesthetics which acknowledges even ugliness as beautiful for the sake of force. Classicism holds feeling in chains. Σωφροσύνη — prudence, soundness of mind — is considered the fundamental virtue.

[¶4] The great exponent of this feeling of fear before the immeasurable, of this thirst to take one's modest place in the world and not anger the gods — Sophocles — exclaims through the lips of the chorus:

[¶5] Pride begets tyrants, and many, Higher, ever higher it leads them to the cliff, and into the abyss Suddenly casts them from the heights— Into nets from which there is no escape, Into irreparable grief.

[¶6] But if this fear of soaring too high was, as it were, the soul of Greek poetry, politics, morality and religion, does it follow that classicism is penetrated with the fear of life? By no means. Neither in Herodotus, with his philosophy of history founded on the envy of the gods, nor in Sophocles, nor in Aristotle with his "golden mean", nor in Epicurus and other greatest representatives of the truly classical spirit, is there any particularly sharp shade of sorrow or pessimism. If the Greek feared the striving towards the immeasurable, he also did not love it. He loved measure; he admired measure. Calling men to life within the bounds permitted by the gods — that is, in essence by the laws of nature, hygiene and society — he did not feel the weight of self-renunciation; on the contrary, he was proud of the sense of measure, of the capacity to establish order and voluntarily submit to it, as a sign of his superiority over the barbarians with their unbridledness.

[¶7] The world is a beautiful order, a cosmos. Oh, if only the state too could be made as stable and harmonious. That is the dream of the greatest sages of Greece. To attain the greatest and most stable order of social relations, and then to obey the wise laws of the natural cosmos and the social cosmos, to admire the world from one's own place, determined by the common order, taking one's lawful note in the common chorale — that is happiness.

[¶8] The spirit of classicism is a conservative spirit, deeply opposed to the spirit of revolt. Classicism is joyful resignation, man's reconciliation with his own limitedness in the name of acknowledging the beauty of the whole — that is, of society (πόλις) and of nature.

[¶9] It was against the impossibility of a social cosmos that classicism was shattered. Its ideational culminating point was Pythagoreanism, of which we shall speak in more detail. Plato through the lips of Socrates in his marvellous dialogue Gorgias, or On Rhetoric proclaims "the great, common and eternal law of harmony, order and beauty, ruling over all the parts of the universe and over its ends, wherefore it is called Cosmos. The point is not to live, but to live well — that is, in accordance with the absolute laws of the good, of justice and of order."

[¶10] The individual's right to revolt is rejected utterly, as something ugly. Classicism is in general anti-revolutionary, which is precisely why it hates tyranny — tyranny is an unstable order: every Peisistratid finds his Harmodius, every Critias his Thrasybulus. A liberal constitution, a stable compromise between classes — that is what Greek political thought seeks. But the prospects of eternal technical progress, the bold thought of proclaiming man the future god of nature, of putting forward the laws of his life and the fundamental desires of his will as the programme of labour for the re-creation of the material world — all this is utterly alien to Hellenism. It does not even slip into those theological or semi-theological forms in which it was clothed in Judaism and Mazdeism. So: the absence of revolt, in social and cosmic ideals alike; the obedient man, voluntarily bowing down. Even his own Prometheus, Aeschylus made voluntarily bow down in the end. Order is already reason; it already triumphs. If a man does not know how to be happy — so much the worse for him. Such is the spirit of cosmism. Such it has remained.

[¶11] The eloquent representative of later cosmism, Renan, teaches:

[¶12] "Mental culture eliminates belief in the supernatural even at a low level; that is indubitable. But it is equally indubitable that even at its highest stages the religious feeling in the elevated sense is not destroyed. Man does not of course depend on a capricious master, at whose will he would live, die, prosper or suffer. But he depends on the Universe, which has an aim and directs everything towards that aim. Man is a subordinate being; whatever he does, he adores and serves. Virtue consists in voluntary and joyful service of a higher aim. Evil is to serve without zeal — to be a bad soldier, who is compelled to go into the fire like everyone else but grumbles at the general meanwhile. The world is an enormous choir, in which each must hold his own note. Religion consists in doing one's business with a song on one's lips, in praising God morning and evening with cheerfulness, a fine disposition of spirit and meekness (undemandingness)."

[¶13] Renan is altogether in agreement with Anaxagoras and Cicero that man is born for the contemplative life. In one of his studies he declares: "Religion has an ideal aim, independent of its real utility. The task of humanity is to realise the highest form of the contemplation of the universe — that is, the adoration of God. The solution of this task inevitably, or so to speak, apart from God, leads to a mass of sufferings. To diminish their sum is of course also to do God's work. However, this work is secondary. Man was not created for a painless existence."

[¶14] Is it surprising that the intelligent bourgeoisie is now clutching at this meek contemplativeness? The frank counter-revolutionary Lasserre, in his Histoire du romantisme en France, trumps with Hellas and with Wolfgang Goethe against the "rebels". Is society not a part of the world? Are its laws not determined by necessity? He calls for replacing unbridled ideals, dreams of absolute rationality and justice, with the aesthetic spirit of exulting in the "whole" and of self-sacrificing service to it. 34 Classicism in its turn enters the police service, so as to "drag" [ташшить] people into the service of the "fatherland", of M. Clemenceau and of various Majestäten, and not to "let" [пушшать] dreaming humanity rush headlong in pursuit of the "chimera of happiness".

[¶15] I have already said that one can be religious in a fairly crude sense of the word while being a materialist. The atheist Haeckel calls for reverence before nature and hails it as God in his recent book Religion and Evolutionism.

[¶16] "Our monistic God," he says, "is the universal being embracing the whole of nature, the Deus-Natura of Spinoza and Goethe; he is identical with the energy that eternally quickens all things. He is far from alien or hostile to the matter filling space; he is joined with it and forms together with it the highest substance; he is omnipresent, as the Gospel also teaches.[E89] Since we know that the law of substance is absolute and universal, that the conservation of force and matter is inviolable, since we know that the continuous evolution of substance is everywhere subject to the same great and immutable, iron laws — we may conclude that God is the law of nature itself. The will of God manifests itself lawfully in a drop of rain as in the development of a crystal, in the fragrance of a rose and in the reason of man."

[¶17] Hence it is not difficult to conclude that alongside the fragrance of a rose the iron law of nature also creates the social order, and the Haeckelian can without hesitation repeat on occasion the words of Skvoznik-Dmukhanovsky: "This is established by God himself, and the Voltaireans speak against it in vain."

[¶18] Indeed, what is a pygmy — man — before the face of the cosmos?

Another major cosmist exclaims:

[¶19] "To suppose, as contemporary education in the schools of France does, that there is in nature no moral and intellectual principle, that matter is soulless — means to commit a monstrous error, which will lead to a kingdom of brigands(!). Man is an inhabitant of a rather insignificant planet, heavy as a piece of lead, tiny, a million times smaller than the sun, which holds it suspended in its rays. This sun, a million times exceeding the earth in size, is merely a small atom of the stellar system. For example Sirius exceeds the sun more than a million times. But Sirius too is a speck of dust in the infinity of the stars, for the Milky Way in its equatorial condensation represents eighteen million systems. This earthly man, infinitely small upon the infinitely small, sees, hears and knows nothing. His pitiful organism is endowed with only five senses, of which four play almost no role in cognition, since they testify only to phenomena extremely close at hand. Only sight allows him to have some representation of the universe. But what a meagre representation! The optic nerve is adapted to the perception of vibrations between 400 and 765 trillion per second. Below and above this boundary nothing exists for man. He has no electric nerve, no magnetic nerve, no orienting nerve; he has not a single sense capable of putting him in direct connection with reality (?). And this insignificant atom imagines that it can judge infinity!"

[¶20] Here are reasons enough for extreme modesty in judgments. And since the universe is so great, is it not clear that it is rational? And how many more learned arguments can be adduced in proof of this proposition. And having been imbued with reverently trembling modesty and with the consciousness of the worthlessness of earthly life — no one will any longer become an "apache", the "kingdom of brigands" will cease to threaten us, and the kingdom of the "messieurs comme il faut" will be consolidated. In Joseph Dietzgen the feeling of the universe was developed no less than in M. Camille Flammarion, the astronomer for ladies and pillar of the church of the spiritualists, to whom the lines quoted above belong — but he knew at the same time what the spirit actually observed by us is. He says: "Whoever acknowledges reason, that lever of all systematics and lawfulness, to be the product of natural causes, cannot ignore the systematic lawfulness of nature. And yet the only spirit that exists is the spirit of man. Neither in the course of the stars nor in the eggs of the cuckoo is there consciousness; there is no understanding in the building of the hive or in the head of an ant or an ape; and only in the form of the work of human thought does consciousness deserve the name of spirit or reason. Our spirit is the highest being."

[¶21] Dietzgen, true, is perhaps even excessively afraid lest man should grow proud, should tear his spirituality away from nature, should forget the real connectedness of all that exists — but he knows where the summit of the really observed, and not the romantically astronomo-spiritualist, universe lies: "Out of chaos the world developed further up to the man endowed with consciousness, upon whom there now rests a joyful obligation, and who is capable of leading our still sufficiently chaotic earth to further progress by way of the study and organisation of its forces."

[¶22] I shall ask only one thing: the earth only? But for a first occasion, is not the earth enough?

[¶23] But if human reason is the most rational reason — what is there then for the priest to catch hold of? Even a priest of science? He wants not only to utter truths dictated to him by the universal reason, that is, revealed truths, but wants further, resting on their indisputability, to prop up the kingdom of the well-dressed over the blouses: he is so afraid of the apaches, and without God the blouse-man, as everyone knows, turns at once into a "brigand". Science, in the form of cosmism morally interpreted, is already beginning to function as a guardian of order. And it is taken into the police service. Old Bakunin long ago foresaw this danger; he scented the policeman god even under the Phrygian cap clapped on him by the prophets of Mammon[E90]. "Thus we return again backwards under the yoke of church and state. True, this new organisation, founded by idealists, philosophers and scholars, and owing its existence, like all old political organisations, to 'the grace of God'[E91], but supported this time by the supposed will of the people, will no longer be called a church but will be called a school. But who will gain by that? On the benches of this school there will not sit children; no, there will abide there eternally the chronically under-age pupil, who by general admission will never be able to pass his leaving examinations and rise to the level of his teachers and do without their drilling: this pupil is the people. The state will no longer be called a monarchy; it will be called a democratic republic, but nonetheless it will be a state, that is, the tutelage of an officially and systematically organised minority of competent people, geniuses, talents or virtuous men, who will watch over and direct the behaviour of this big, incorrigible and terrible child — the people.

[¶24] The professors of the school and the officials of the state will be called republicans; but they will nonetheless be guardians and pastors, and the people will remain what it has been until now, that is, a flock. And where there is a flock, there must necessarily be shepherds too, to shear and devour it."[E91][E92]

[¶25] And Paul Adam, in his reply to the journal's questionnaire — the Mercure de France — depicts the future of religion in such propositions: "1) All the religions of the past were merely stages of a single revelation; 2) the secret meaning of the vulgar legends is science; 3) let us raise a temple-museum to the whole of those beliefs thanks to which man developed from a fear-filled anthropoid into a synthetically thinking scholar; 4) in these pantheons let us restore the old cult, a kind of thanksgiving mass to the universal forces; 5) since the most ancient cult was dedicated to the sun and to fire, and the newest revelation consists in this, that the source of life is movement — light — warmth, let us raise to the lightning, interpreted by a priest-physicist, a logical, that is, a laboratory, cult; 6) on the basis of biology our preachers will speak from the pulpit about morality and solidarity; 7) for greater convenience let us try to dress these sermons and ceremonies as far as possible in the forms of the Catholic cult native to our race. Such a religion seems to me entirely acceptable and answering the needs of our time. It will have a beautiful influence on the mind and ethics of the crowd. If I rose again in a hundred years, I should not be surprised to find this cult dominant."

[¶26] We thank you humbly. Tell me, readers, is this not exactly like what Bakunin feared? The bourgeoisie needs an indisputable hierarchy; for that an hierarchy must be established in nature too. And so man will pray on bended knee ("the form of the Catholic cult native to our race") — to movement, light and warmth. In my view it was more rational to pray to a cock, a dog, a cow. Those have at least a little reason. But warmth — there is an idol for you. And man will bow his head, full of brain, that most precious product of painful evolution, before warmth, which in the chain of other phenomena is the most elementary form of manifestation of that very energy which has attained its most complex and subtlest form in the functions of the cerebral cortex. No, the world is not a monarchy, where slave-men would have to bow down and thank the Lord, and not a republic where light, warmth and other important senators reign, before whom the little mannikin must beat his brow. The world is an anarchy, the world is a struggle of unconnected elements, the world is a chaos that rushes about and in which forces in a tenacious struggle gradually find their place, warring, advancing, being destroyed, changing. That is why the world is cruel — it is a struggle without mercy. That is why the world is beautiful — it is the elemental coexistence of victorious forms that have managed to live together in space. The world is the highest form of democracy — it is the carrière ouverte aux talents, as Napoleon used to say. And the little soldier — man — wants to be a general; he stretches his hand towards the marshal's baton and the imperial crown. Man produces on me the impression of a genius arising out of the torments and confusion of a fruitful anarchy, as geniuses were born in the disorderly, cruel, beautiful and culturally stimulating communities of Hellas and of the early Renaissance.

[¶27] Rise from your knees. Dare. All things are possible to man. (cf. Matt. 19:26)[E93] Perhaps death, perhaps apotheosis. Perhaps a "lord", perhaps "ruined". Physics and biology must be studied by the "crowd", in order to make use of them; but physicists and biologists who have pulled on the priest's cassock, clambered up into the church pulpit and utter "revealed" truths about the necessity for man to be modest in his desires and to conform to the order dictated by the Universal reason itself — such physicists and biologists must be driven with sticks out of the temple of freedom and development.[E94]

[¶28] It seems clear to me that the tendencies of ethical, aesthetic and scientific cosmism, as a religion setting before man a new, inhuman God, are harmful, conservative. On the contrary, the religion of the human species, of faith in oneself and in one's brothers, of love for the coming, ever more harmonious and mighty type of man — is a revolutionary force, forming and tempering souls and welding them together.
