[¶0] Renan depicts the culture of Solomon's time in such colours: "His alliances and religious tolerance, his magnificent seraglio with seven hundred queens and three hundred concubines[E99], the order and beauty of his court, the commercial and industrial successes of his time, awakened in men's souls a taste for well-being and the joy of life, to which Israel gladly gave itself up whenever it did not feel the spur of suffering. The Song of Songs is a charming reflection of the gay, happy, subtly sensual life of Israel in the moments of its religious self-oblivion." In the struggle of the kings and the prophets Renan in many respects takes the side of the former. "On the one side," he says, "breadth of mind striving to comprehend the world, to imitate other peoples, to emerge from narrow frameworks; on the other — a conservative thought, but one with which the good of humanity was bound up, despite its narrowness." Yes, had the "broad culture" triumphed, Israel would have been one of many Semitic cultured little peoples. But it was crushed. This gave victory to the revolutionary-reactionary elements of the people.

[¶1] Amos's description of "culture" drips with hatred: "Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near; that lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the best rams out of the flock, and the calves from rich pasture; that chant to the sound of the viol, thinking that they command a musical instrument like David; that drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph." (Amos 6:3–6)[E100]

[¶2] The prophets were revolutionaries because they struggled for the oppressed people and strove towards a social upheaval in the spirit of egalitarianism. They were reactionaries because they saw the ideal behind them, in the simplicity of morals and the patriarchal equality of the pastoral period, and struggled against economic progress, which proceeded through the concentration of lands and capitals.[E97]

[¶3] The especially irreconcilable ones, the so-called Rechabites, did not wish even to settle in houses and felt an aversion to grapes and wine; they continued to live in booths, to shear and milk livestock.[E101] These austere shepherds were the support of the prophets.

[¶4] Solomon's kingdom collapsed. The primacy of the tribe of Judah was overthrown; the tribes rallied around Ephraim and formed a new kingdom — the Israelite, as distinct from the Judaean. But the dynasty of the worker, the stonemason Jeroboam, went along the path of the magnificent Solomon. The struggle boiled up in both halves.

[¶5] Under the talented king Ahab, who stood under strong Phoenician influence, there appears the first great prophet, "the troubler of Israel" (1 Kgs. 18:17)[E102] — Elijah. Out of the desert where he lives, half-naked, huge and menacing, this poet and tribune comes into the capital of the kings. He mocks the king's priests, he reviles the king's wife, he threatens the king himself. Attacking foreignness with all the force of his thunderous eloquence, he clearly marks out the social character of his preaching: in the typical example of Naboth's vineyard he struggles against the enrichment of some and the ruin of others, against the concentration of wealth, especially of land.[E103]

[¶6] The king is rather afraid of the terrible old man. In moments of anger he only asks him to go out of his sight, lest some harm come of it.

[¶7] But Elijah's disciple Elisha, inferior to the teacher in impressive force of speech, was harsher and more practical. Not for nothing did he give even the boys who naively mocked his venerable baldness to be eaten by a she-bear.[E104] Together with the Rechabites, with the convinced Yahwists Jehu and Jonadab, he carried out a bloody coup, an armed rising of the zealots of the old ways and the defenders of the rights of a backward but freedom-loving peasantry. The dynasty of Omri was destroyed. The beautiful and proud Jezebel was torn to pieces by dogs.[E105]

[¶8] But all the horrors of an Eastern revolution led to nothing. Debauchery, idolatry and the accumulation of riches at the cost of the ruin of the poor continued as before. To fight with the sword against an inexorable cultural process was evidently beyond their strength. The Israelite kingdom seethed and boiled with passions, sufferings and ideas. Power had not yet succeeded in becoming firmly established. In the country there reigned in general an anarchy. From outside terrible Asshur already threatened with its short curved sword. Debauchery at the top, the decline of prosperity at the bottom, everywhere the dominion of stupid superstitions, the official cult of foreign gods — as an index of the triumph of Phoenician culture beneath national-democratic tendencies[E106] — such was the setting in which the first true prophet began his preaching: the first and mighty political writer of Israel — Amos.

[¶9] He was a Tekoa shepherd[E107] — that is, one of those convinced economic reactionaries whose very manner of life makes them so. Wealth and power are his enemies. He drenches them in venomous contempt, burns them with fiery hatred. In the cult of Jehovah he sees the only salvation for his passionately loved people. Jehovah is the god of the poor, the god of justice — in that is his whole essence.

[¶10] "Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail, saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit? That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; yea, and sell the refuse of the wheat? The Lord hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their works." (Amos 8:4–7)[E108]

[¶11] For all these crimes the god of justice will punish the Israelite nobility by destroying its culture and its kingdom. With the same Amos threatens the mighty, proud and predatory neighbours. Over the whole world of aristocratic militarism rolls the thunderstorm of outraged justice. "And they shall cut one another down with swords."[E109]

[¶12] "Ye who are enemies of the righteous," cries Amos to the authorities, "ye take bribes and pervert the cases of the poor in the courts. Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken. Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the Lord God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph." (Amos 5:12, 14–15)[E110]

[¶13] And at last, in magnificent words, he marks out his democratic religion, expresses the very soul of his Jehovah, exclaiming: "Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts. Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols. But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream." (Amos 5:22–24)[E111]

[¶14] But this great poet, "roaring like a lion", no longer called the righteous to activity, only to patience. The sinners will by God's will be destroyed by the sword, the people will be purified by losing its proud and unjust rulers, and then better times will come.[E112] The prophet Hosea, almost a contemporary of Amos, depicts in bright colours the loveliness of a firm covenant with God: "And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely. And I will betroth thee unto me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies. I will even betroth thee unto me in faithfulness: and thou shalt know the Lord. And it shall come to pass in that day, I will hear, saith the Lord, I will hear the heavens, and they shall hear the earth; and the earth shall hear the corn, and the wine, and the oil; and they shall hear Israel." (Hos. 2:18–22)[E113]

[¶15] And such times had already been. The people loved Jehovah, and he led it out of Egypt and gave it Canaan. There is no salvation outside Jehovah — the god of the righteous, that is, of the supporters of the equality of the small-propertied order. Now it is otherwise: "The Lord hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land. By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood." (Hos. 4:1–2)[E114]

[¶16] To Hosea belong also the words "for I desired mercy, and not sacrifice" (Hos. 6:6)[E115]. Amos and Hosea had already created a lofty representation of the god of righteous judgment, the hater of the rich and the oppressors, to whom justice and purity of morals are infinitely dearer than sacrifices and incense. Other prophets would vary and develop these themes, which evidently passed to Amos and Hosea from their predecessors. Prophecy, always true to itself, would nonetheless be supplemented by important features, thanks to the historical destiny of the two peoples. Yet important changes would not distort the fundamental solution of the religious question: happiness can be attained by the observance of justice; suffering comes from immorality, which draws upon itself the wrath of the Almighty Truth; and good conduct cannot but be rewarded.
