Isaiah

The first great prophet of the kingdom of Judah was Isaiah. Unlike the Israelite prophets, he was not wholly opposed to the government. He succeeded in subjecting to his influence the good and pious king Hezekiah. Hence Isaiah's enormous political influence. He watches his neighbours keenly; many of his prophecies are peculiar diplomatic treatises.

But he pays due tribute to domestic politics as well. Politics, morality and religion are woven inseparably in this man, at once gifted with a practical mind, with a lofty idealism, and with a remarkable literary and oratorical talent.

Isaiah's activity ran its course in a stormy epoch. Despite his noble birth, he evidently came forward while still young (in 740 B.C.) as the leader of the democratic-national party in Judah, as a prophet, and played a leading role for forty years.

He was witness to the criminal alliance of the Israelite king with Syria against brother Judah. That was the height of impiety. The fall of the Israelite kingdom, which followed soon after, powerfully strengthened the position of Isaiah, who had all the while preached the justice of his God. Jehovah had visibly punished Israel. Judah zealously set about purification. King Hezekiah and the official priesthood, always hostile to the prophets, fell under his guidance. Everywhere the destruction of idols began, an energetic planting of Yahwism. Isaiah's experienced hand was felt in foreign policy too. He taught that the pride of the Jewish people should by no means consist in a military mania and a ridiculous rivalry with the colossi of the military powers. The people of God must shine by the justice of its laws and the purity of its morals. Thereby it would one day conquer the world. For the present one must be cautious. Isaiah was the first to put forward the policy of alliance with Babylon, which became for a time traditional for the prophetic party. This made it possible to wage successful wars with weak neighbours. At home and abroad Isaiah saw successes. A storm had begun to gather over his head: the Assyrian Sennacherib besieged Jerusalem. But a plague that broke out in the Assyrian camp forced him to retreat. A new, dazzling triumph for Jehovah and his servant Isaiah.[E116] Isaiah's democratism is sufficiently evident from his energetic utterances: "Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth." (Isa. 5:8)[E117]

"Therefore the Lord will cut off from Israel head and tail, palm and rush, in one day. The ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail." (Isa. 9:14–15)[E118]

Yet Isaiah managed to arrive at a practical compromise with the nobility; perhaps that is why he speaks of false-teaching prophets? Were these not the irreconcilables? Isaiah loved and magnified Hezekiah; he spoke of him in expressions which were later considered a characterisation of the Messiah: "The people that walk in darkness shall see a great light: upon them that dwell in the land of the shadow of death a light shall shine. Thou shalt multiply the nation and increase its joy: it shall rejoice before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. For thou shalt break the yoke that burdened him, and the staff that struck him, and the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian. For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor, The mighty lord, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this." (Isa. 9:2–4, 6–7)[E119]

He answered his successes with a whole impulse of almost mad joy and hope. Judah trembled with expectation under fate's first caress. Describing the wars past and to come for Hezekiah and his descendant, "they shall fly upon the shoulders of the Philistines toward the west; they shall spoil them of the east together: they shall lay their hand upon their neighbours, and so on" (Isa. 11:14)[E120] — Isaiah suddenly rises above these prospects of the petty and predatory politics of the Jewish lucky little kings and enthusiastically draws a purely messianic picture. When the king of Judah succeeds in being just — all life will be transfigured:

"And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins. The ox also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid and the calf; and the calf and the young lion and the ox together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of knowledge, as the waters cover the sea." (Isa. 11:5–9)[E121]

Of course these were only metaphors of social peace, but their very grandeur extended Isaiah's promise concerning the pious Hezekiah and his descendants and disclosed before the gaze of an enraptured humanity certain distant, azure, golden prospects. Later the grandiose Persian messianism would find fertile soil among the disciples of the great Isaiah.

The ideal outgrew politics. Rejoicing that the Jews would plunder the sons of the east, Isaiah at the same time glorified the times of peace, rising to internationalism — and all thanks to his two fundamental theses: "there is no God stronger than Jehovah" and "Jehovah is the god of justice". Democratic nationalism was the root on which one of the greatest ideals grew. "Let us beat our swords into plowshares, and our spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more." (Isa. 2:4)[E122]

Isaiah is convinced that the guilt for wars, and for other sufferings too, falls upon the pride of the military aristocracy: "The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day. For the day of the Lord of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low." (Isa. 2:11–12)[E123]

If Isaiah drew close to royal power, that was because it entered his service. The king became the instrument of the Lord in the struggle with the nobility: "The Lord will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses. What mean ye that ye beat my people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor? saith the Lord God of hosts." (Isa. 3:14–15)[E124] In Isaiah, despite the successes of his preaching, another important note of prophecy rings out loudly too: the call of the righteous to patience — they will be rewarded, but society must first be cleansed of the foul: hence the inevitable period of suffering. — Of the righteous man Isaiah says: "Lord, in trouble he sought thee, he poured out quiet prayers when thy chastening was upon him. Like as a woman with child, that draweth near the time of her delivery, is in pain, and crieth out in her pangs; so have we been in thy sight, O Lord. We have been with child, we have been in pain, we have as it were brought forth wind; we have not wrought any deliverance in the earth; and the other inhabitants of the world are above us. Thy dead men shall live, the dead bodies shall arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew shall be as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead." (Isa. 26:16–19)[E125]

All these motifs would be developed by Isaiah's heirs, especially by the great nameless prophet of the times of Cyrus, who modestly and proudly appended his genius poem of consolation to the marvellous, image-glittering legacy of the genius guide of King Hezekiah.[E126]

Jeremiah

Isaiah's hopes for the descendants of Hezekiah were not destined to be fulfilled. His son Manasseh permitted an aristocratic reaction. It evoked a stormy protest from the Yahwists, who had become a great force. It is not excluded that King Josiah, the protégé of the Yahwist party, ascended the throne as the result of a forcible coup. Under this king the prophetic party, with Jeremiah, the prophetess Huldah and the high priest Hilkiah at its head, feverishly hastened to consolidate the democratic social order. Jeremiah was himself a priest. Renan characterises this man as follows in the third volume of his History of the People of Israel:

"The religious character is more sharply expressed in him: the tribune inclines towards the priest. Amos, Hosea, and sometimes Isaiah astonish us by the boldness of their thought, their love of the people, and their indifferent attitude to questions of dogma and cult. We admire their noble wrath. Seeing how unjust the world is, they are ready to smash it. They think somewhat in the spirit of our anarchists: if the world cannot be improved, it must be destroyed. Jeremiah is far less occupied with social questions and with the victory of the democrats. He is a fanatic, full of hatred for his enemies: all who do not believe in his mission are scoundrels in his eyes, and he wishes them death and announces it to them." Darmesteter, however, finds this characterisation unjust, and says:

"In Jeremiah as in Isaiah, the prophet, the reformer of moral, political and social life, dominates everything else. His character is indeed unique of its kind, but the circumstances in which he lived and taught were quite exceptional too. Jeremiah is the natural and lawful heir of Isaiah, but with a tart character, iron conviction, invincible courage, full of contempt for all prejudices, however honourable and glorious they might seem — and this is what makes him a vivid personality in a vivid group of prophets. He does not live in a relatively happy time, as Isaiah did: the terrible hour had come, the hour of irreparable mistakes and final catastrophes."

At first, however, Jeremiah too played the role of Isaiah under the young King Josiah. But his hopes for a solid social reform (of which see below) were not justified. Jeremiah loved the young king, and the king listened to him without contradiction. Alliance with Babylon for the salvation of the land from without, and land reform within, destined to strengthen the kingdom of Jehovah-Justice[E127] — such were the slogans of the prophetic party. When Pharaoh Necho led his troops against Babylon, he did not wish to touch Josiah. But the fiery Jeremiah considered it necessary to cement the alliance with Babylon. He believed in Jehovah's help for the pious Josiah, the hope of the righteous, and he drove him out to meet the Egyptians. In the battle with Necho Josiah was defeated and returned to die in Jerusalem amid the sobbing of the poor people. Jeremiah's grief knew no bounds. [E128]The hopes had collapsed. But the conclusion was not that Jehovah had betrayed his people — no: it was obvious to Jeremiah that it was still too early for the people to be saved, that it was too sinful, had not yet suffered enough to redeem its guilt.

Jehoiakim did not obey the prophets at all. His intimates inclined to Egypt and intended to rise against Babylon. Nor was there any lack of prophets who incited to revolt and promised Jehovah's help. Jeremiah hated these proud secular thoughts; he knew that Judah was going like a blind man into a pit; and when, in spite of his protest, the revolt began, was suppressed, and a new yoke of taxes settled on the people's shoulders, he burst out against the court with frenzied eloquence:

"Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah; They shall not lament for him, saying, Ah my brother! or, Ah sister! they shall not lament for him, saying, Ah lord! or, Ah his glory! He shall be buried with the burial of an ass, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem. As I live, saith the Lord, though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were the signet upon my right hand, yet would I pluck thee thence; and I will give thee into the hand of them that seek thy life, and into the hand of them whose face thou fearest, even into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of the Chaldeans. And I will cast thee out, and thy mother that bare thee, into another country, where ye were not born; and there shall ye die. But to the land whereunto they desire to return, thither shall they not return. Is this man Coniah a despised broken idol? is he a vessel wherein is no pleasure? wherefore are they cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into a land which they know not? Thus saith the Lord, Write ye this man childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah." (Jer. 22:18–19, 24–28, 30)[E129]

The reign of Zedekiah was wavering. At one time, at the insistence of the democrats, he decided to set the slaves free and to legalise henceforth their liberation after a definite term of service. But the nobility was indignant, and Zedekiah withdrew his decree. Jeremiah flung in the new king's face: "You have returned your brothers to slavery: you refused to proclaim freedom, so I in the name of Jehovah proclaim against you the freedom of the sword, of plague and of famine." (cf. Jer. 34:16–17)[E130] The break was complete. But the people too began to be indignant against Jeremiah. He preached nothing but misfortunes; he took away from the people courage and hope.

During the new war with Babylon Jeremiah stubbornly repeated that Jerusalem must be surrendered at once to the mercy of the victor. The war-leaders complained that amid the howling and ominous croaking of this terrible man in funeral garments it was impossible to defend the homeland. He was locked in prison, put into a cistern, sunk up to the throat in mud; he continued to prophesy countless calamities. [E131]He had broken with earthly hopes in the strong and in princes; he trusted in God alone. To suffer, suffer, suffer. That is the only path of purification. Everything into the fire, everyone into the fire… for the sake of rebirth.

Everyone turned away from the frantic man who wished to destroy his own generation, to give the people over to a thousand executions for the sake of a distant and doubtful future. Jeremiah himself suffered inexpressibly from his loneliness. Cries of sorrow burst from his breast: "Woe is me, my mother, that thou hast borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent on usury, nor men have lent to me on usury; yet every one of them doth curse me. Cursed be the day wherein I was born: let not the day wherein my mother bare me be blessed. Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man child is born unto thee; making him very glad." (Jer. 15:10; 20:14–15)[E132]

With anguished reproach he turns to God himself: "O Lord, thou hast drawn me, and I was drawn: thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am in derision daily, every one mocketh me." (Jer. 20:7)[E133]

Jeremiah laid an enormous stone in the building of the religion of redemption through suffering — the religion which was destined to become the faith of the democracy of the whole Roman world and to have a colossal influence on the destiny of humanity for two and a half thousand years and more after the preaching of a passionate patriot-sufferer in the streets of a small, agitated, besieged Jerusalem.
