# Religion and Socialism, Volume I

*Anatoly Lunacharsky, tr. S. Alexander Laurent*

The Bolshevik "God-builder" reads the religions of the world as dreams of a just humanity.

## 36. Individualist Idealism

[¶0] Without dwelling on the pure but extraordinarily dry, religiously speaking, monotheism of the founder of scholasticism (an involuntary one, incidentally), let us pass to the later forms of Greek religious philosophy. It is approaching the fatal limit, where it must be swallowed up by democratic Christianity.

[¶1] On it the traces of a complete despair of any success in political life are clearly visible. The discord of the Greek states, the formation of great monarchies, the loss of independence, and finally the centralisation of the empire that kills all initiative — destroyed the political side of the human soul, of man who is according to Aristotle pre-eminently a political, that is, a social animal.[E199] Man was crippled: he was condemned to individualism. But an individualist solution of the religious question is utterly impossible outside a riot of mystical dreaming. Epicureanism was a refusal of religion in cultural forms, adapted to the manners and needs of well-to-do people. Cynicism was the same refusal in crude forms, adapted to the manners of the poor. Many Cynics, incidentally, mixed elements of Orphism into their doctrine, and even dared to call themselves Pythagoreans — though between those proud and highly cultured political aristocrats and the "barefoot monks", those "Capuchins" of the ancient world, lay a whole abyss. Aristophon 41 amusingly relates of these last descendants of Pythagoreanism who save themselves from the evils of the world, in the comedy The Pythagorean: "In the name of heaven, do you really think that those who call themselves Pythagoreans starve and wear rags of their own free choice? Do not believe it. Necessity compels them: they have nothing, and so they have found a way to invent rules of life exactly to the measure of any beggar. But give them good fish and tender meat — they will gobble it so that they bite their own fingers." (Aristophon, fr. 9; Athenaeus 4.161e–f)[E200]

[¶2] We see here Orphism and Pythagoreanism finally sunk into the lower strata of society. It was here that Christianity had to find its adherents. The most noble and genuinely religious form of philosophy was Stoicism. The Stoics could lay claim to the tradition of the great Samian far more than the "Pythagoreans" described above. They perfected his cosmology; following him, they bound it inseparably and strongly to theology: the deity expresses itself in the world, nature is divine. The cosmos is for them still the point of departure. But they no longer dream of organising the social cosmos after the likeness of the heavenly one: only their own soul, by way of a proud and calm self-renunciation and steadfastness in suffering, do they wish to bring into agreement with divine nature. The rule once so bright and joyful — of imitating and submitting to nature — acquired among the Stoics a tragic character, the character of that wisdom, tempered in sufferings, so to speak defensive, which down to our own day is known by the name of stoical.

[¶3] But the pride of the ancient man before the face of suffering is still evident here. Bowing before nature and taking its blows upon his breast, the Stoic strives only to bear the burden of life with dignity, in order afterwards to plunge into the waves of the world-soul and vanish in it. Such a religion was beyond the average man. Hence it is not far to a Judaised Orphism or an Orphicised Judaism, which we call Christianity.

[¶4] The philosophy of pure mysticism — Neopythagoreanism and Neoplatonism — definitively declares the cosmos, visible nature and our body to be the products of decline, degeneration, the debasement of the deity. The circle of self-contained and self-sufficient nature is broken — it is all more or less a passionate impulse, a more or less loud entreaty towards something lying beyond its limits. The self-satisfaction of the soul is broken too: it is a poor captive, dreaming of another world, of another life.

[¶5] All this was the product of bitter conditions of life. The remnants of vitality and realism that had hidden in Platonism are burned out. Sociality acquires an above-earthly character — of union in God. (Certain currents of Christianity will give it back, in comparison with pagan mysticism, a shadow of earthly significance — but not in the sense of cooperation, as in the religion of labour, nor in the sense of a well-ordered state structure, as with Plato, but only in the sense of a blessed symbiosis of the righteous.) Cognition is replaced by mystical enthusiasm, by divine inspiration; we are already approaching the proclamation of folly in God as something higher than the summits of philosophy.[E201] Even the shadow of the instinct of conquest (not to speak of the fanaticism of the later Christians), which was still alive in Plato, as also economics, as concern for earthly well-being, are declared unworthy even of the lowliest of men.

[¶6] An obvious regression. But in all respects? No — for there is being prepared the ideal of the "kingdom of God on earth"[E202] with its two postulates: the dominion of the shining human church over the elements (by the power of the god Logos), and the triumph of justice in the sense of brotherhood and equality within the bosom of the church of the righteous. Despite the mystical colours, the dwindling human energy, the tendency to theologise the whole of life — the ideal in its inner human essence became higher than the ideal of pure antiquity, higher than Plato's ideal. Inwardly it has more in common with the positive ideal of the kingdom of humanity. The romantic impulse of the democracy of the ancient decadence is close in spirit to the romantic longing of modern man for beauty, power, perfection and justice. Later thought will only have to give the ideal back to the earth, lend it the features of manliness, and make it the programme of a purely human struggle and purely human labour.

[¶7] But for this it had to and will have to draw from the treasury of the life of the joyful epoch of antiquity, with its love of the earth, the body, real life; for this it will be necessary to further the rebirth of the social instinct, again in its realistic form. Classical joy of life plus the eternal striving towards conquest, towards growth. The insatiable idealism of romanticism, clothed in the beautiful forms of self-confident humanity. Such an ideal Goethe draws for us in the closing speeches of Faust — Faust the builder, Faust the public man.[E203] To make every man such a Faust, in all the wealth of his mental constitution — that is the task of man's philosophical and artistic self-education. But this task will not be solved before the suitable conditions are created: triumphant socialism will create them.

[¶8] Looking back over the path traversed and preparing for the further exposition of the religious development of the spirit, we may repeat the strong lines of James Darmesteter: "Religion is not a heavenly revelation, but neither is it the invention of deceivers. It is the resolution of a host of terrible riddles posed by the environment. Man solves them, following calls from without and from within. It is dreaming upon the theme of the phantasmagorias of nature and the mysteries of the fate of the human race."

[¶9] But is the new religion only a dream? No, it is hope — hope better grounded than that proper to any other religion whatsoever. Hope may of course still deceive us. But let humanity not conquer; let it be destined one day to die: the religion of labour will help it to live a beautiful life, and will wash from the concept of religion in general the just accusation that it has hitherto given its caresses to humanity at too dear a price. Religion is being rationalised, purified, but loses nothing of its depth, its solemn force, its ravishing beauty: in it man sees the purest reflection of his great species, recognises himself as a great element — Man — and acquires with it a heroic resolve, rejecting himself, overcoming his own I, to struggle in the thousand-year struggle for Man, despite the fact that the outcome of the struggle is hidden from our eyes by the thick fog of the future. Religion is enthusiasm, and "without enthusiasm it is not given to men to create anything great."[E204]
