[¶0] Not long ago, in reply to a questionnaire on the future of religion conducted by the journal Mercure de France, comrade G. V. Plekhanov gave a very clear and precise definition of religion in the rationalist sense — that is, considering religion from the side of form (in what it expressed itself), and chiefly as a form of world-cognition. Here is the respected comrade's reply in full to the questionnaire, which was formulated as follows: "is religion undergoing an evolution, or is it dying?"

[¶1] "You will permit me, in answering your question, to take the standpoint of social evolution and to formulate it as follows: is not the disappearance of religion the natural end of its evolution? In order to answer this question, let us give an account to ourselves of what this evolution has been up to now."

[¶2] "But first of all, what is religion? If we make use of that definition which Edward B. Tylor calls the 'minimal' one, we shall say that religion is the belief in spiritual beings living alongside the bodies and processes of nature. This belief is a necessary element of every religion and serves at the same time to explain all the phenomena of nature. At a higher stage of social evolution a new element joins itself to this primitive one: the moral element. The connection between the two elements becomes ever closer in the course of time. Finally we arrive at what I might call the 'maximal' definition of religion: the belief in spiritual beings, bound up with morality and serving as its sanction. That is why many hold that the essence of religion consists in morality. But we are still far from the end of this evolution. The connection between morality and religion, which seemed indissoluble, must disappear thanks to the progress of the human mind."

[¶3] "The scientific explanation of phenomena can only be materialistic. The intervention of spiritual beings, which in the eyes of the savage explains everything, explains nothing in the eyes of a Berthelot; the value of such an explanation falls for every civilised man in proportion as he assimilates the results of the work of science."

[¶4] "If many still believe in the existence of spirits and supernatural beings, that is because for various reasons they have not been able to overcome the obstacles on the road to the scientific point of view."

[¶5] "When these obstacles are removed — and everything suggests that this will be the work of social evolution — every trace of the supranaturalist conception will disappear, and morality will be compelled to take its independent place."

[¶6] "Religion in the maximal sense is dying out. As for the religious feeling, it is obvious that it will disappear following upon the religious idea. But there is of course more conservatism in feelings than in ideas. There will be various survivals, hybrid conceptions of the world will be born, half-materialist, half-spiritualist; but these survivals too are condemned to disappear in their turn, especially with the disappearance of certain institutions supposedly sanctioned by religion. The progress of humanity carries with it a death sentence both for the religious idea and for the religious feeling. Only the timid or the interested express alarm for the fate of morality. Morality is capable of leading an independent existence. Belief in spiritual beings is even now far from being a support of morality; on the contrary, the religious beliefs of the civilised nations of our time have lagged behind their moral development."

[¶7] "Clifford justly remarks: 'If men were not better than their religions — the world would be a hell.'"

[¶8] So according to Plekhanov, religion is above all a definite, namely an animistic, explanation of phenomena. Later the "spirits" were called upon to keep the laws of morality; the source of the laws was seen in their will. Now phenomena have received another explanation, the spirits have not turned up, and "this hypothesis is no longer needed for the purposes of cognition", as Laplace said of God; and therefore morality too must renounce supernatural sanction and seek a natural one. The supernatural is expelled by scientific realism, and for religion there is no longer any place.

[¶9] Engels stood on the same standpoint as Plekhanov, as is clear from the following statement of his, for example: "Of the enormous majority of German Social Democrats it may be said that atheism is for them an already surpassed stage; this word, which has a purely negative meaning, is not applicable to them, since they come forward no longer as theoretical but only as practical opponents of religion: they have done with the idea of God, they live and think in the world of actuality, and are therefore materialists." 1[E8]

[¶10] Here religion is identified with the last form of animism — monotheism — and Social Democracy is declared a "practical opponent of religion". In a recent pamphlet Anton Pannekoek, with the definiteness characteristic of him, explained what is to be understood by this practical struggle with religion. At the same time he energetically insists on the same narrow definition of religion: religion is belief in the supernatural.

[¶11] "By religion we understand that which has always been its essential mark — belief in a supernatural being which supposedly governs the world and directs the destinies of men."

And further:

> Russian: …

[¶12] "A profound opposition reveals itself between our views and the religious outlook, since we consider natural, and explain by natural causes, those phenomena which the religious man regards as supernatural."

[¶13] Finally:

> Russian:

[¶14] "If we wished to apply the name 'religion' to everything that is otherwise called virtue, morality and idealism, we should introduce confusion into concepts instead of clarity."

[¶15] "In our investigation what is at issue is not the future of morality or of the various virtues — for on that account there is no difference of views among socialists — but the future of belief in God." 2

2

[¶16] To declare without reasoning that "virtue, morality and idealism" are the same as "religion" would indeed introduce confusion; but clarity and simplicity are not always a victorious argument in favour of this or that definition. What could be simpler, for instance, than a strict distinction between money and commodities? And suddenly Marx introduces "confusion" by declaring that money too is a commodity — a definition which forces him to embark on reasonings which he himself admitted to be "extremely difficult". Of course, since in common speech religion means belief in God, it is practically most convenient to use the term in precisely that way. But generally accepted definitions are almost always superficial.[E9]

[¶17] We shall return to the criticism of the rationalist definition of religion, most fully expressed by comrade Plekhanov. For now let us pass to the other types of definition.
