An original position on this question is occupied by the revisionist Stampfer. For him the essential mark of religion is dogmatism:
"The essence of philosophy is freedom, the essence of religion is the absence of freedom. Religion rests on dogmas, and philosophy on conclusions. Whoever wishes to prove the truth of religion by philosophical investigation acts in essence against the spirit of religion, which supposes itself to be above all human investigation." 3
"In the struggle for a world-view the two poles, the two extreme points, are not 'religiosity' on the one side and 'atheism' or even 'materialism' on the other, but positive religion and the critical activity of the human mind."
Developing this thought further, our author arrives at such propositions as these: "nobody, and least of all a Social Democrat, (?) will deny such concepts as: reason, totality, laws, cause, end, perfection, justice and the like; and whether we call these concepts God, or something else — that is a question of terminology." 4 According to Stampfer, the theological systems of antiquity — evidently those of Pythagoras, Plato and others — have nothing in common with religion, just as Spinoza, Kant, Fichte and Schiller are for him not at all religious. For none of them taught dogmatically. But materialism and atheism turn out to be... almost a religion. Indeed, here is what we read in Stampfer about materialism:
"Social Democracy is in no respect bound up with the materialist world-view. This world-view denies not only the religion of revelation but philosophy too, all whose efforts it considers barren — while quite forgetting that its own fundamental concepts, 'force' and 'matter', are also philosophical abstractions. The fact that we think does not free us from the labour of investigating the laws of that thinking. In so far as materialism rejects this investigation and tries in its own way to board up the world, it stands in close contact with the religions of revelation."
Thus Stampfer stands all the concepts on their head. Carried away by his external mark — dogmatism — he is ready to consider related to the scientific-socialist world-view all manner of philosophical systems that introduce into the explanation of phenomena the concepts of a God-end, a God-justice, while excommunicating the materialists. Yet Engels says of those same materialists:
"Care should be taken that among the workers there be circulated in enormous quantity the brilliant French materialist literature of the eighteenth century — that literature which, in form and content alike, remains to this day the greatest creation of the French genius, which in its content, given the then state of science, still stands at an unsurpassed height, and in form still has nothing equal to it."[E10]
Vandervelde too occupies a peculiar standpoint, and one friendly to metaphysical idealism. True, he does not commit Stampfer's crudest errors; on the contrary, for him the essence of religion consists precisely in that in which Stampfer is inclined to see the negation of religion — namely, in the free investigation of the "secret".
"Only he," says Vandervelde, "who does not understand the relative character of science and its impotence to make clear to us the essence of things, can cherish the illusion that the successes of scientific knowledge will put an end to philosophical ignorance." 5
This invasion of the region of the unknown is what Vandervelde calls religion, or religious philosophy — which thus turn out to be eternal.
"Doubtless many people, wholly alien to mysticism and convinced of the barrenness of reflections on the supersensible world, will be satisfied with the very happiness of existence and will await death without fear, but also without hope; others, on the contrary, will be unable to overcome the need to construct hypotheses and, according to the inclination of their minds, will join this or that one of those doctrines which have divided humanity between them since religious and philosophical systems have existed."
"But all will unanimously acknowledge the impossibility of giving their beliefs a scientific or historical foundation; all will be conscious of the essentially subjective character of these hypotheses, and will consequently renounce the claim to impose them on others as certain, absolute truths." 6
Such is Vandervelde's opinion in its essentials. "Some will believe in the existence of God and of a life beyond the grave, others will not," he says.
His definition is deeper than Plekhanov's, less narrow, less rationalistic, but in it truth is mixed with error. Vandervelde feels that religion in its essence is by no means a "way of explaining phenomena", but the solution of the question of man's position in the world — and a solution not theoretical but practical. But instead of showing that even with the most brilliant victories of science and a perfectly clear understanding of the world there remains a place for religion, he refers to the incapacity of science to show the essence of things — that is, he simply starts out a priori from a metaphysical representation of essences hidden behind phenomena, and out of religion he makes a hypothesis about such essences. This is the purest Kantianism. Kant teaches: the essence of things is unknowable, inaccessible to pure reason, but for practical reason it is extremely desirable, and even necessary, that this essence should be consolatory and should morally explain away the wild amorality of phenomena; and we have the right to postulate various grace in that place behind phenomena which is empty for cognition, where there are no facts that would resist our "postulates".
Yes, the demands of "practical reason" — that is, man's longing for happiness — can neither be declared non-existent or unimportant, nor be resolved by science as such. But to draw from this the conclusion that they will always be satisfied by fables, irrefutable only because they nest beyond the bounds of sensible nature, means to hand humanity a certificate of spiritual poverty. In the present case we find ourselves closer to comrade Plekhanov. What divides us from him is a question of terminology. Having accepted his definition, we shall have to accept all its conclusions — and we accept them "with both hands". But even if we accepted Vandervelde's terminology, which in our view is muddled and inexact, we should still decidedly not agree with his conclusions. He has quite failed to discern that great liberation from the supersensible which is accomplished in defiance of the efforts of bourgeois reactionaries, both refined and crude, and which comrade Plekhanov sees so clearly. Vandervelde's great compatriot, the poet Verhaeren, says: "The gods were the humanisation of nature, and that was needed: if the gods are departing now, are dying — a sign that they have ceased to be needed." Comrade Plekhanov tells us: "yes, the gods are no longer needed, for Berthelot does not need them in his laboratory." "Excellent," Vandervelde might reply: "but are they just as superfluous for the man who has lost a beloved being? For the grieving, the dying, for him who hears the dead cold of the world's spaces in which our planetary system slowly grows chill?" He who can rise above these questions, conquer them — has a religion. He who ignores them and therefore has no need of religion is a narrow egoist, a nihilist in the worst sense of the word. But he who can rise above these questions without the help of the idea of God? — I think he has a religion without God. To prove that this is possible for present-day man means to finish God off. And the word religion itself matters less here. Although it seems to me that, despite its having been, as Dietzgen says, "vulgarised by the priests", it should not be fetishistically feared; and to replace it with another word, as we shall see, is not so easy.
