## 6. Ludwig Feuerbach

[¶0] Ludwig Feuerbach does not, of course, belong among the Social Democrats. He was a forerunner of Marx and Engels, or even only a transitional link to them from philosophical idealism, their helper in purifying philosophy of its fundamental error. The enormous majority of Social Democrats confine themselves to paying tribute of respect to this man's negative services. Engels's criticism contributed strongly to this. Wishing to point to the gigantic strides which Marx's philosophical thought made further and away from Feuerbach's still immature position, he lays bare with great acuteness all the defects of the author of The Essence of Christianity, and leaves him one historical service — that he gave, so to speak, the impulse towards the final formation of dialectical materialism.

[¶1] And so a philosopher spitefully passed over in silence by German bourgeois scholarship, enraged by his boldness, met in the Social-Democratic world too with nothing but a purely formal recognition of the service of a transitional link. Yet in his special field, in the critical philosophy of religion, this man was incomparably greater than those suppose who know him only from Fr. Engels's brilliant monograph. If many particulars of his criticism were long ago surpassed by science — not so much in the sense of being refuted as in the sense of being reinforced — the general spirit of his criticism astonishes by its depth. Economic materialism can add much to his criticism, but only add: the most essential has already been done by him; and the usual attitude of Social-Democratic writers to religious questions represents a step backwards — from Feuerbach's criticalism to the often very superficial enlightenmentalism of the materialists of the eighteenth century.[E11]

[¶2] Whatever Engels may say about the depth and brilliance of the materialists' thoughts, however enormous their historical services — even in the very field of the religious development of humanity — their position in relation to religion was nonetheless superficial; and this superficiality strikes one in Voltaire too, and in Diderot with his friends.

[¶3] I therefore consider the reference to Feuerbach more than justified. I think that no materialist dealt religion — positive religion, and every faith in God, the other world and the supersensible — such a shattering blow as Ludwig Feuerbach. After Feuerbach, philosophically, the religion of God is killed. And that is because he struck it not with a battering-ram, not with cold mockery, not by criticising its out-of-date parts and ridiculous absurdities — he blew it up from within, penetrating to its very essence. This man truly understood the essence of religion. I cannot warmly enough recommend to all who take an interest in our question a deepened reading of The Essence of Christianity, which has now appeared in Russian translation too. 7

[¶4] On the very first pages of the book we meet with a categorical assertion: "My book has a negative character, but please note: it denies only the inhuman essence of religion, while the human essence it acknowledges and affirms."

[¶5] And several pages later: "The reproach that according to my work religion is absurdity and illusion would be well founded only if that to which I reduce religion — that which is held to be its true object and content, namely man, anthropology — were also nothing, absurdity and illusion. But I am far from attributing to anthropology an insignificant, or even a secondary, significance, as happens when theology is counterposed to it as something higher; on the contrary: I bring theology down to anthropology, and thereby raise anthropology to the rank of theology." 8

[¶6] I think that from the religious-philosophical standpoint Marx brilliantly continued this work of raising anthropology to the rank of theology — that is, definitively helped human self-consciousness to become the human religion.

[¶7] Let us listen again to Feuerbach: "The new philosophy contains the essence of religion within itself; it is, in its own self, as philosophy, a religion." Feuerbach's own definition of religion is nowhere formulated quite satisfactorily, but the reader will at once feel the enormous difference between Feuerbach and the Social-Democratic rationalists and enlighteners when he reads such lines as these: "religion is the solemn revelation of the treasures hidden in man, the acknowledgement of his inner thoughts, the open confession of the secrets of his love."

[¶8] Here Feuerbach seized religion by the heart, and not by its clothes, as comrade Plekhanov did. Feuerbach develops his definition of religion further in the following way:

[¶9] "The historical progress in religion consists precisely in this, that the objective of preceding religions afterwards becomes subjective — that is, that which was formerly looked upon as God, and worshipped at first as God, is now acknowledged as human. In all religions man worships his own essence. He objectified himself, but did not consider the object to be his essence; a later religion takes precisely this step, and the whole progress in religion therefore comes down to a deepening of self-knowledge." 9

[¶10] If this definition of the religious development of humanity is not complete, on the whole it is nonetheless correct.

[¶11] The quotations given suffice for counterposing Feuerbach's philosophical depth to, say, the learned superficiality of Tylor, from whom comrade Plekhanov borrowed his definition — a definition, incidentally, current among bourgeois and Social-Democratic freethinking publicists.
