[¶0] Marx

> Russian:

[¶1] The scientific character of Marx’s socialism consists precisely in his having not only introduced the objective element into socialism, but made it, so to speak, the cornerstone of socialist thought. Hegel undoubtedly gave Marx considerable help in this. It was Hegel who rose well above every kind of subjectivism and condemned all revolutionary criticism and all dreams, when detached from the actual movement of ‘objective spirit’, society, as something insignificant and almost comical in its presumption. Objective development is equally inexorable toward people who are excessively impatient or stray far from the main road, and toward conservatives who wish to keep what is dying alive.

[¶2] To the subjectivist socialists, the most important thing seemed to be to define the ideal social order, demonstrate its superiority by logical and artistic means, and perhaps also its conformity with a rather fantastic, a priori construction of the nature of things and of human nature.

[¶3] For the objectivist socialist, the question was posed differently: what relation does the socialist ideal bear to the objective course of things, which depends on no individual’s will? The task of impartially investigating phenomena in their necessary interconnection: this is the socialist’s scientific, purely cognitive task. The more objective and incorruptible such an investigation, the smaller the part played in it by feeling, desire, hopes, pity, and hatred, the more solid its results will be, and the more scientific will be the socialism that emerges before the investigator’s eyes from the depths of the present as the necessary future.

[¶4] Insofar as Marx, through his brilliant analysis of capital in its origin, development, internal contradictions, and inevitable destruction, demonstrated our society’s irresistible tendencies toward socialism, insofar as he discerned in the proletariat the natural fighter against the capitalist order and its anarchy, and the natural organizer of a new, systematically planned cooperation, he fulfilled his task as an objective scientific investigator and established socialism as a science. This was the first achievement of his great life, the most urgently needed achievement.

[¶5] Insofar as Marx, relying on his scientific socialism, devoted himself, with all the passion of his ardent nature and all his genius as an organizer and tactician, to the struggle for the swiftest and least painful collapse of the old society and the birth of the new, insofar as he played the midwife at the birth of the future, to use his terminology, he became the founder of scientific-socialist practice. This was his second great achievement.

[¶6] Very many Social Democrats, indeed their overwhelming majority, see only these two aspects of Marx’s work: for them he is a great scientist and a great leader. And this is understandable: Marx devoted an enormous amount of energy to his science and his cause, and both stand before us in a more or less finished form; whereas Marx’s philosophy is set out on only a few pages of his early works, shines through only here and there in his scientific treatises and polemical pamphlets, and, finally, is known to us in Engels’s interpretation. Certainly Marx’s thought and Engels’s thought were very close; certainly Marx officially approved Engels’s philosophy insofar as it was expressed in Anti-Dühring. Nevertheless, Engels did not express the full depth of Marx’s philosophical thought: he omitted certain features of his worldview that were of enormous interest from a philosophical standpoint.

[¶7] Why, then, did Marx not point out his philosophical differences with Engels? For the same reason that he himself did not manage to set out his worldview as he had intended. He made the creation of socialist science and appropriate tactics his life’s work. In profound accordance with his philosophy, he devoted himself wholly to reality and its demands, to remaking the world, setting its interpretation aside. A combative nature, sensitive to the pressing issues of the day, he understood where he was needed most. Marx the philosopher, perhaps the greatest who ever lived, was sacrificed to Marx the economist and Marx the fighter. The great friends exchanged roles: Marx took from Engels’s hands the work he had begun so brilliantly of elucidating the position and role of the new class, the proletariat, and continued it with a breadth and depth of which Engels, for all his outstanding gifts, would not have been capable. And Marx placed his mighty philosophical thought in Engels’s hands to be popularized: Engels performed this work with great power and clarity of thought, but Engels’s popularizations will never replace Marx’s philosophy for us.

[¶8] Yet Marx’s philosophical thought has by no means vanished without a trace. Its elements are embedded in all Marx’s works and in the very substance of his teaching, sparkling there like priceless diamonds in a mass of pure gold.

[¶9] Philosophical thought went its own way, and if certain ‘disciples’ failed to understand the philosophical essence of Marxism, this did not prevent its growth within Social Democracy, a growth long concealed, yet producing Dietzgen from its very first steps. The development of the natural sciences and of natural-scientific methodology, those necessary and necessarily honest foundations of capitalist technology, helped deepen the philosophical thought of Marxists. The interruption in its development brought on by exceptional strain is, of course, not its end.

[¶10] Let us try to expound Marx’s philosophy as it appears from its surviving elements, making those additions which, according to our understanding, follow naturally from those elements.

[¶11] We have before us the fact of humanity’s social development, the fact of the succession of forms of social being. This fact dominates theories: thinkers, dreamers, and organizers merely reflect external necessity in their thought and serve it well or badly. Thought is determined by social being.

[¶12] But what is this self-developing being? According to Hegel, it is the Idea, objective Spirit, akin to our thought and governed in its movement, from affirmation through contradiction to a new, higher affirmation, by the laws of the highest form of logic, dialectics. According to Hegel, the thought of an individual, a group, a nation, or an epoch is subordinate to the movement of objective Universal Thought and reflects it in a particular form. Thought as the foundation of being, driven out through the narrow door of Hegelian anti-Romanticism, returned, disguised as objective dialectics, through the boundless window of Hegelian metaphysical idealism.

[¶13] Marx was not inclined to substitute a monstrously inflated reflection of human thought for social being and the laws of its development. He eagerly welcomed Feuerbach’s teaching that all divine ‘Spirits’, down to Hegel’s ‘Idea’, are reflections of man. But he remembered what Feuerbach had to some extent forgotten. Religion and metaphysics are reflections of man, but of social man, for man himself is a reflection of social being.

[¶14] Thus the primary foundation of all thought must be neither Hegel’s abstract being nor Feuerbach’s abstract man, and least of all Stirner’s concrete individual, but social being. The individual and individual thought arise from it, but we shall leave them aside for now. Social thought also proceeds from it, that is, religion, philosophy, law, morality, art, and science. From this standpoint, science, that is, our entire scientific worldview, is evidently a reflection of social being at a particular stage of its development.

[¶15] But what is the concrete content of this being, its essence? The content and basic form of social being is the act of labor. In labor, that is, in life’s contact with an environment that is still obscure and unknown, consciousness arises as the foundation of purposive reactions, and the formation of organs begins. At the human stage of life’s development, instinctive consciousness takes on the character of more or less active cognition; the further development of organs is replaced by the development of instruments of production, blindly discovered procedures by the development of methods of labor; labor itself becomes thoroughly conscious and purposive, while remaining the same basic form of social being, that is, its essence. The category of consciousness, like the very organs of perception and movement, is a product of labor, one of its secondary forms, its consolidated conquests, its hardened crust, beneficial for as long as these help labor develop further in the sense of increasing its power.

[¶16] If, at the zoological stage, the activity of labor still distinguishes itself only vaguely from passive experience, it becomes perfectly clear at the human stage, where the subject sharply distinguishes itself from its environment and reality from its goal, with the instruments of production and acts of labor serving as the connecting link between them.

[¶17] We reproduce in full the philosophical analysis of labor given by Marx in Chapter V of Capital:

[¶18] > ‘Labor is above all a process taking place between man and nature, a process in which man, through his activity, promotes, regulates, and controls the exchange of matter between himself and nature. In relation to the given matter of nature (Naturstoff), he himself acts as a force of nature. He sets in motion the natural powers belonging to his organism, his arms, legs, and head, in order to appropriate matter in a form suitable for himself. By acting on external nature and changing it in this process, he also changes his own nature. He develops the powers slumbering within him and brings the operation of those powers under his control. We are not considering here the primitive, animal, instinctive forms of labor. Compared with the state of society in which the worker appears on the commodity market as the seller of his own labor-power, the period in which labor had not yet cast off its primitive, instinctive form appears prehistoric. In our discussion we presuppose a state of labor in which it is characteristic of man alone. A spider performs operations resembling the actions of a weaver, and a bee, by constructing its wax cells, can put any architect to shame. But there is something that distinguishes the worst architect from the best bee from the very outset: before molding a cell out of wax, man has already built it in his head. At the end of the labor process, a result is obtained which already existed in the worker’s conception at the beginning of that process, which existed, so to speak, ideally. Man does not merely alter the forms of the substance given by nature; he also embodies in that substance his conscious purpose, which determines his manner of acting like a law, and to which he must subordinate his will. Nor is this subordination a single act. Besides the exertion of the organs that perform the physical work, purposeful will, manifested in attention, is necessary throughout the whole duration of labor; and it is all the more necessary the less the labor, in its content and manner of performance, engages the worker, the less he enjoys it as the free play of his organic powers.’ > > ‘The labor process contains the following simple factors: purposive activity, or labor itself, the object of labor, and the means of labor.’

[¶19] Thus labor is a manifestation of human activity; nevertheless, both labor and all the adaptations it creates are conditioned by the passive resistance of the environment: in changing the environment, the laboring subject changes itself. Its changes, however, must develop within the limits of the fundamental laws of life, for otherwise death ensues. Insofar as an organism changes in the course of its struggle with nature yet continues to exist as a living thing, it has evidently succeeded in organizing the environment, in impressing the stamp of its own organization upon it, both in the sense of coming to know it and in that of adapting itself to it or adapting it to its own needs. The subject and its environment, insofar as it is conscious of that environment, are entirely products of primordial activity; in this respect we are close to Fichte. But at none of its stages is this activity arbitrary: amounting to a striving to live, it assumes definite forms only by encountering definite resistance from the environment.

[¶20] In man, labor has a social character, whether it involves several individuals working together or a single individual working in connection with others through a natural exchange of services or the later exchange of commodities.

[¶21] The forms of cooperation, which constitute the basic forms of social life, depend on the procedures of labor and the instruments of production, and change as these change.

[¶22] The various organizations of cooperation (clan communism, the patriarchal clan, the family; the tribe, the federation of tribes, the nation; the workshop, the guild, the manufactory, the factory, the trust, and so forth) constitute adaptations for maximizing the effectiveness of labor, just as individual organs and the division of functions do in the organism. Here, as there, a form has its raison d’être as long as it contributes to the growing power of labor, and hence of life. In both cases, a point is readily reached at which forms that are fully perfected, that have attained complete development and the highest degree of definiteness, while corresponding more or less ideally to the given conditions, at the same time hold back all further development and, if conditions change, prove harmful or even fatal. The organism or society must then either break the old forms or perish.[22](#note-22)

[¶23] Leaving aside the laws of the organism’s development and concentrating our attention on society, we must note the following phenomena: the driving force of progress proves to be, first, population growth, which, by threatening famine and extinction, drives people from hunting to stockbreeding, and then to agriculture and industry; second, such a driving force is the development of technique, its procedures and tools, which represents the accumulation and elaboration of the experience of labor.

[¶24] Needs and the purposive organization of labor are the foundation on which a given social order is erected, an order intended to ensure the greatest power of life attainable under the given conditions. But whereas in speaking of an organism we can use the expression ‘the struggle between new reactions and rigidified forms’ only figuratively, in society we have an actual struggle. The original division into organizers of labor and those who carry it out becomes increasingly complicated and assumes ever more sharply the character of society’s division into privileged and dispossessed classes. The interests of these classes are bound up in the most direct way with the given social forms; every alteration in these forms threatens some with destruction and opens up hopes for others. The development of human society therefore takes on the characteristic features of class struggle. And since large societies gradually coalesce out of separate clans and constitute, as it were, separate organisms, each pursuing its own ends and caring for its own power, intertribal or international war naturally proves to be a phenomenon accompanying society’s development.

[¶25] Labor’s original dependence on the environment does not, strictly speaking, limit its freedom as such, but merely places external obstacles in its way. The thirst for life is the free principle in the organism, and to the best of its ability it works upon the environment in its own fashion. In society, however, the results of labor prove, in the overwhelming majority of cases, not to correspond to the immediate purposes of the laboring individual. His labor enters as a part into an entire system, intersects and intertwines with the tendencies of others, produces a whole network of remote and unforeseen results, and returns to the individual in the unrecognizable form of a purely social phenomenon, as the result of labor that is collective but unorganized, with no objective conscious will at its source. The principal result of this interference of labor, this accumulation of separate acts and their transformation into an elemental force of a special kind, is man’s enslavement to the ‘economy’ that he himself has unconsciously created.

[¶26] Human labor is collective; it cannot be encompassed by the consciousness of an individual worker. For man to be free, for the results to correspond fully to his purposes, collective consciousness and collective will must be organized.

[¶27] The primitive clan met this need to some extent, but only because labor was extremely elementary and life uniform. At higher stages of development, organizers, aristocrats of various kinds, became the representatives of such a collective will. Quite apart from the fact that they almost never managed to regulate the entire stream of social labor, we must also remember that their freedom was founded on the enslavement of the majority, that their purposes were determined far more by the interests of their group than by those of society as a whole, and that all this made the aristocratic order both unstable and infinitely remote from the ideal of complete power and complete freedom for the human race as a whole, an ideal that adequately expresses social being as Marx understood it.

[¶28] The thirst for life underlying labor has its natural expression in the ideal of man’s economic power. The inseparable thirst for life and thirst for freedom, which essentially coincide, can find their complete expression only in the ideal of the perfect wholeness and inner unity of the true subject of social being, the collective.

[¶29] Hence the growth of humanity’s productive forces is the first task, with which a person whose thought and feeling have embraced life in its entire development cannot fail to sympathize under all circumstances. Collectivism is the second task, and only with its realization does the accumulation of power acquire its true meaning.

[¶30] In the remarkable article ‘On Malthus and Ricardo’, Marx declares that the only ideal of an honest and cultivated thinker, his only criterion, can be the development of society’s productive forces, which, according to Marx, coincides with the development of the richness of human nature. From the quotations we have given from Marx’s criticism of Feuerbach, the reader will readily see what a central role the transition to collectivism plays in Marx’s worldview. We shall, however, illuminate this aspect of the matter in far greater detail.

[¶31] Not only social forms but consciousness itself are determined by social being, that is, by labor in its development. Consciousness is thus also a social form, and an exceptionally important one. Marx might be suspected of crude materialism of the Büchner type when he says: ‘The ideal is the material that has passed through the brain.’ But with a correct understanding of the entire structure of Marx’s ideas, such a suspicion vanishes like smoke. The ideal, that is, conscious acts of every possible kind, consists of phenomena most closely connected with unconscious acts occurring both within the organism itself and outside it. Marx sees no essential difference between these two kinds of phenomena, conscious and unconscious: both are acts taking place in the same space and the same time, interconnected in one way or another. External impulses and internal stimuli apparently pass through the brain in the literal sense before becoming reactions, if those reactions are conscious. Thus, according to Marx, an ideal force is one transformed by its passage through the brain, in other words, plastically organized by this highest organ of life. Marx’s formula is reversible; with equal justification we may say: what we call material, when organized in the brain, acquires in our eyes the character of the ideal; and conversely, what we call ideal is, in its disorganized form, material. Marx contrasts the material and the ideal not as passive and active, necessary and free, measurable and immeasurable, earthly and heavenly, and so forth, but as different stages in the organization of the same elements.

[¶32] In making consciousness dependent on social being, Marx by no means intended to say that it follows the latter slavishly, as it were, adding nothing to it and exercising no reciprocal influence. Consciousness is the organized experience of labor, increasingly transformed, as labor grows, into a mighty force organizing it. Consciousness arose from labor and has no meaning outside it; it is a form of the organization of labor, essentially necessary to its progress. If Marx also asserts that being is not determined by consciousness, this expression has two meanings. First, not only Hegel but even the Left Hegelians believed that the determinations of being could be logically deduced from the laws of consciousness, and also, in Bruno Bauer’s case, that overcoming particular categories of objective being in thought, in abstraction, was already equivalent to overcoming them in practice. Marx, differing sharply from them here, points out, on the contrary, that the consciousness of a given nation, epoch, and so forth can be deduced from the economic being of that nation or epoch, that consciousness in general is unintelligible outside being and, moreover, powerless without a connection to practice. Second, revolutionary subjectivists believed that the conscious will of a certain group, whether heroes, critically thinking individuals, or even an enlightened sovereign or millionaire, could abruptly change the course of events and authoritatively impose particular forms upon social being. Recognizing the enormous fragmentation of human society and the dominion over it of elemental forces both natural and social, Marx acknowledged the powerlessness of an individual or group that opposed its will to the spontaneously unfolding movement of the still unorganized labor of all humanity.

[¶33] Such is the rich meaning contained in Marx’s famous formula. Anyone who reads into it materialism of the Le Dantec type, the idea of the eternal impotence of conscious will in the face of elemental forces, is profoundly mistaken. On the contrary, the growth of this will’s organization and, with it, its power, its transformation from the disconnected tendencies of isolated and powerless individuals into a harmonious stream of collective energy, rational and victorious through and through: this is the soul of Marx’s philosophy.

[¶34] Marx by no means set himself the task of justifying the world. For him, the point was not to give the world a consoling interpretation, but actively to adapt it to human needs. Without yet entering into an evaluation of human subjectivism, that is, the human ideal, we can, following Marx, say one thing: nature does not correspond to this ideal and approaches such correspondence, relatively and piecemeal, only through labor. Marx encompassed humanity’s history in this formula: man’s struggle with nature, the practical remaking of the world. This process cannot be conceived as the struggle of a being already fully formed from the outset; on the contrary, in the very course of the struggle and together with its successes, man organizes and purifies himself and his ideal. At the same time, he gains an increasingly clear conception of the properties of the principle hostile to him, the elemental environment.

[¶35] But if a person remains at the individual standpoint, confined within the limits of individual existence, then, on losing his illusions about the rationality and benevolence of someone who stands behind the environment and commands it, or about those qualities in the environment itself, on losing his faith in the fable of a world beyond in which the moral absurdities of this world are corrected, he is left utterly inconsolable. For history proceeds, and will long continue to proceed, amid blood and tears. No one is able to alter this state of things: one must either accept the struggle in all its cruelty, advance toward man’s victory over the bones of individuals and oneself leave one’s bones in the wilderness that still separates us from the promised land, or else stand aside in noble-minded detachment, wash one’s hands, hysterically implore that the struggle cease, and in general adopt some position that remains ‘idle chatter’ even when it is the exact opposite of ‘jubilation’.

[¶36] In the article on Malthus and Ricardo which I have already quoted, Marx teaches us that the struggle constituting the essence of history is waged by the Species, while the individual must accept this struggle willingly or unwillingly… We may say: ‘Genus volentem ducit, nolentem trahit. The species leads those who go willingly, and drags those who resist.’ The conscious individual identifies his purposes with those of the species. Marx himself was such an individual.

[¶37] Let us remind the reader here of the quotation from his letter.

[¶38] Like the awareness of being part of a developing collective, the feeling of being so is the disposition that, as an emotion, displaces every religious feeling and takes its place. An individual forced to choose between nihilism and the consolations of faith will readily incline toward the latter even at a high stage of development. The ground for the old form of religion will be destroyed only when the individual returns to the bosom of the collective. Here is what Marx writes about this in his early but remarkable work, ‘A Contribution to the Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right’:

[¶39] > ‘The members of the political state are religious because of the dualism between individual life and the life of the species, between the life of civil society and political life; religious insofar as man regards the life of the state, which lies beyond his actual individuality, as his true life; religious insofar as religion is the spirit of bourgeois society, the expression of man’s separation and estrangement from man. Political democracy is Christian insofar as man, not man in general but every man, is regarded in it as the sovereign, the supreme being; moreover, this is man in his uncultivated, unsocial form, in his contingent form of existence, man as he is in life, man as he has been corrupted by the whole organization of our society, lost, estranged from himself, surrendered to the rule of inhuman forces and elements; in short, man who is not yet truly a species-being.’ ‘Only when the actual individual man takes back into himself (in sich zurucknimmt) the abstract citizen of the state and, as an individual man, becomes a species-being in his individual position, his individual labor, and his empirical life; only when man has recognized and organized his forces propres[23](#note-23) as social forces and therefore no longer separates social forces from himself in the form of political power; only then will human emancipation be accomplished.’

[¶40] Human emancipation thus has, in its outward aspect, the character of a revolution in man’s self-consciousness. The philistine mentality knows only two forms of such self-knowledge: first, the center of gravity lies in God, and man, so to speak, revolves around him, the old religious self-knowledge, geocentrism; second, the ‘I’ is the center, and the whole world revolves around it, egocentrism. The proletariat brings with it an entirely new form of self-knowledge: the Species, the collective, is the center; the individual revolves around it but feels his fundamental unity with it. This is anthropocentrism, equally distant from both the preceding standpoints.

[¶41] If, in its outward aspect, man’s emancipation is a revolution in his self-knowledge, its inner driving force, the foundation that makes such a revolution and the very possibility of fully realized collectivism possible, is the growth of labor. Marx gives a picture of the gradual liberation from religion on the following famous page of Capital:

[¶42] > ‘For a society of commodity producers whose social relation of production consists in their treating their products as commodities, that is, as values, and in this material form relating their private labors to one another as equal human labor, Christianity, with its cult of abstract man, is the most suitable religion, especially Christianity in its bourgeois forms, Protestantism, deism, and so forth. In the ancient Asiatic, classical, and similar systems of production, the transformation of the product into a commodity, and consequently man’s existence as a commodity producer, plays a subordinate role, which, however, becomes more significant the closer the given society approaches its decline. Genuine trading peoples exist only in the cracks of the ancient world, like the gods of Epicurus or like the Jews in the pores of the Polish people. Ancient social organizations of production are much simpler and more transparent than the bourgeois one, but they rest either on the immaturity of the human individual, who has not yet severed the umbilical cord connecting him to his blood relations, or on relations of direct domination on the one side and slavery on the other. The existence of such organizations is determined by the low stage of development of the productive forces of labor and the corresponding limitation and narrowness of people’s relations in the sphere of material life, and therefore of their relations with one another and with nature. This real narrowness is reflected in the realm of ideas in the ancient religions of nature and of peoples. The religious reflection of the real world can disappear altogether only when the conditions of people’s practical everyday life daily present them with entirely clear and rational relations between one person and another and between people and nature. The social process of life, that is, the material process of production, will cast off its mystical veil only when, as the product of freely associated people, it comes under their conscious and planned control. But this requires a material foundation of society, or a set of material conditions of its existence, which are themselves only the natural product of a long and painful historical development.’

[¶43] If we ask ourselves what fundamental motive drives the conscious Marxist socialist in his often arduous and self-sacrificing activity, we shall receive a perfectly definite answer.

[¶44] It is not immediate need. Immediate need may lead to a striving to escape an oppressed condition by any means whatever, and, when success is recognized as utterly impossible, to purely anarchic protest, destruction, and so forth. The planned struggle of the working class is precisely a class struggle, full of personal sacrifices for the sake of common success, unfolding through successive generations. Consequently, it is not personal need but the consciousness of the oppressed condition of an entire class, not personal advantages but class objectives, that constitutes the soul of the conscious workers’ movement. Destructive anarchism and reformism are diseases of the workers’ movement, its deviations toward individualism and shallow realism, away from practical class idealism; for we are far more entitled to speak of class idealism than of class egoism, an internally contradictory expression.

[¶45] Nor can hatred be the fundamental driving force. Together with need, it forms the basis of semiconscious protest: of course, it does not disappear or lose all significance with the growth of socialist consciousness, but it becomes greatly restricted, for scientific socialism mitigates the guilt of the guilty by revealing the true roots of social calamities, and blunts hatred’s agonizing sharpness by pointing with a confident gesture toward the bright future and opening paths to it.

[¶46] Pity and the thirst for justice may also play their part, but Marx takes the field most resolutely against the knights of pity and justice when, in the name of their feelings and principles, they stand in the way of economic progress. Fiat justitia – pereat progressus! Such is the cry of the noble-minded moralists. Marx would sooner say: fiat progressus – pereat justitia. This is because of his unconditional certainty that justice unsupported by enormously increased economic power is both chimerical and, if realized, pitiful. Economic progress, on the contrary, as demonstrated by the brilliant analysis and prognosis of Capital, bears within itself the most splendid form of justice and is the only road to it. Scientific socialism demands of its adherents firmness, tragic courage, and the ability to rise from the spectacle of the transitional epoch’s sufferings to the overall picture of humanity’s growth, more than tenderheartedness and pity[24](#note-24).

Fiat justitia – pereat progressus!

[¶47] Thus the conscious socialist’s fundamental motive is the idealism of the Species, closely connected with the class idealism mentioned above. Here it is appropriate to recall once more Lassalle’s words that the workers must

[¶48] > ‘raise the principle of their class to the height of the principle of their age, make their idea the guiding idea of the whole of society, and thereby transform that society in their own image and likeness.’ ‘Workers!’ Lassalle exclaims, ‘the lofty, world-historical honor of your calling must fill all your thoughts.’

[¶49] * * *

> Russian: * * *

[¶50] As for the very material upon which social consciousness begins to work, that is, the picture that sociology receives from the hands of zoology, this too is the given organism’s perception of the world. All its organs, including its sense organs, are, to use Marx’s expression, ‘crystallized labor’, reactions materialized, so to speak. From the very beginning to the very end, the world for a living being, insofar as that being is conscious of it, is the product of its activity.

[¶51] Yes, we are told, but this is not the real world; it is a world of hieroglyphs, a reflection of the world in the head. Such was not Marx’s thought: he demands that ‘reality, the objective world’ be considered in the form of practice. He distinguishes it completely from the ‘inner’ world, and praises Feuerbach’s approach to the truth in these words:

[¶52] > ‘Feuerbach wishes to deal with concrete objects of reality, distinct from objects that exist only in our thoughts.’

[¶53] Thus the world as practice is the objective world, is reality.

[¶54] But here accusations of social illusionism arise. Arturo Labriola reproaches Marx for this in his book Marx as Economist and Socialist.

[¶55] The picture of the world in each given epoch is a distinctive reflection of the state of society itself. Does that mean a social illusion? If no other reality exists apart from this illusion, then Marx is evidently a social idealist. Plekhanov avoids this dilemma through two assertions:

[¶56] 1) Beyond the world we know there is a world of things-in-themselves. These things-in-themselves, reflected in us in a distinctive fashion, constitute our world, which is thus in a certain relation to genuine reality; in knowing the world of reflections and acting upon them, we indirectly know the thing-in-itself and act upon it. To prove this proposition, Plekhanov manufactured a quotation for himself. In the second thesis on Feuerbach, Marx wrote:

[¶58] In translation: ‘Through practice, man must prove the truth, that is, the genuineness and power, of his thought, its this-worldliness.’ But in Plekhanov’s version (Engels, Ludwig Feuerbach, translated by G. V. Plekhanov, Lvovich edition, 1906, pp. 90–91), this became:

[¶59] > ‘Through practice, man must prove the truth of his thought, that is, prove that it has real force and does not stop on this side of phenomena.’

[¶60] Thus, in order to confirm Plekhanov’s otherworldly ideas, Marx is forced to say in Russian the opposite of what he said in German.

[¶61] 2) Plekhanov’s second proposition, intended to save Marx from idealism, is formulated quite distinctly in the following words:

[¶62] > ‘His contradiction with the mercantilists led Hume to a mistaken view of money. But the movement of social life, and consequently of human thought, did not stop at the point it had reached in Hume’s time. It placed us in “contradiction” with Hume, and this contradiction resulted in a correct view of money. And this correct view, the result of an all-sided consideration of reality, is already an objective truth that no further contradictions will eliminate. Even the author of the notes on Mill said with enthusiasm: > > What life has once made ours, > Fate has no power to take away. > > Applied to knowledge, this is unconditionally true. No fate can now take from us either Copernicus’s discoveries, the discovery of the transformation of energy, the discovery of the mutability of species, or Marx’s brilliant discoveries. > > But surely human thought will not stop at what you call Marx’s discovery or discoveries? Of course not! It will make new discoveries that will supplement and confirm this theory of Marx’s, just as new discoveries in astronomy supplemented and confirmed Copernicus’s discovery.’

[¶63] Neither of Plekhanov’s propositions accords with Marx’s views. Both Marx and Engels fought most resolutely against dogmatism and against all truths established once and for all. In the face of modern science, developing in so revolutionary a fashion, Plekhanov’s attempts to cling to something given once and for all seem simply pitiful, unworthy of a proletarian thinker.

[¶64] As is already apparent from the lines of the first thesis that we have quoted, for Marx ‘reality’ and the world ‘perceived by the external senses’ coincide. There is not a word about things-in-themselves. The reality (Wirklichkeit) of cognition and its this-worldliness (Diesseitigkeit) likewise coincide. The human picture of the world will forever grow and change, and yet Marx is by no means a social illusionist, as Labriola thinks.

[¶65] Marx by no means thinks that labor creates the world out of nothing, or that it is absolutely free in its creative act. On the contrary, the subject exists in a resistant and formidable environment. We are entitled to suppose that this environment, of which the subject of consciousness and labor itself forms a wholly distinctive part, is infinitely varied; but the subject singles out from it only those elements that affect its vital interests in one way or another. To the rest it is necessarily indifferent; the rest it necessarily ignores, and for it this is equivalent to nonbeing. Only at very late stages of development, with the rapid growth of the sphere of consciousness, does the unknown and even that of which we are unaware cease to be equivalent to nonbeing: in our eyes it is now potential being. When it becomes connected, even by the slenderest thread, with what already exists for us, we shall discover paths to it, and it will enter the world of reality.

[¶66] The ‘world’ of one epoch does not resemble that of another, but each time it is considered real, for it constitutes an organization of experience that more or less answers the needs of the given time. If labor grows, the organization of experience also proves richer and more coherent. There are no limits to this movement!

[¶67] Practice thus limits man; the fundamental activity of his nature makes it absolutely impossible for him to go beyond certain limits circumscribed by his vital instinct. But his world is no illusion. First, he is himself part of the world; second, the elements of his experience must be essentially homogeneous with the elements of the world of which he is unaware, since the world he has come to know is like a lighted circle in the dark; third, the organization he gives these elements for his practical purposes, his truths, theories, laws, and hypotheses, although they reflect no objective reality, since a subsequent epoch will inevitably destroy them and replace them with others, are nevertheless not illusory, for their practical applicability and their undeniable usefulness, palpable in practice, show that they are the most perfect adaptations or instruments of labor available at the given time.

[¶68] If practice, as it were, limits man, concentrating all his attention on particular aspects of the infinitely rich world and compelling him to construct practically useful worldviews, theories as instruments rather than theories as reflections, it is also practice that attests to the truth or falsity of these theories, with the true one proving to be that which, under the given conditions, yields the greatest results per unit of energy expended.

[¶69] > ‘The dispute over the reality or unreality of thought that isolates itself from practice is a purely scholastic question,’ says Marx himself.

[¶70] Thus practice 1) generates cognition, 2) concentrates and limits it, and 3) tests it.

[¶71] This, however, is not all: ‘The philosophers have merely explained the world in one way or another; the point, however, is to change it.’ Indeed, practice plays a fourth and most genuine role: it completes the edifice of the world, it creates, gradually bringing an ever wider range of phenomena into harmony, subjecting them to the sovereign center of the world, the human collective.

[¶72] Reality is creation; cognition is always its servant, whether it wishes to be or not. It always does its master’s will; it never escapes its power, even when it rebels.

[¶73] Thus we have:

[¶74] 1) An unknown environment, which moreover cannot be known exhaustively and in an adequate form, not because it is an inaccessible thing-in-itself, but because it constitutes an inexhaustible infinity of relations;[25](#note-25)

[¶75] 2) A living subject, as the pure striving to live, maintaining itself in the environment through labor and coming to know that environment in practice. At the present stage of development, the real subject of life, labor, and cognition is the disorganized collective; hence the torment of this stage and the yearning now for complete individualism, now for fully realized collectivism.

[¶76] 3) Experience as the result of the subject’s contact with the environment through labor; the organization of this experience, first physiological, then social-psychological; and, as the result of this organization, the human picture of the world, gradually expanding, growing more complex, and becoming clearer.

[¶77] 4) The organization of cooperation, relying ever more consciously on organized experience, and, as the result of this organization, the creative reorganization of the world, the expansion of the bright island of life, consciousness, and happiness amid a chaos of phenomena immeasurable in breadth and depth.

[¶78] Marx is irreligious in the highest degree: not only does he have absolutely no need of extra-human guarantees for the victory of good, but he seeks no support whatever outside man. Marx cannot be a cosmist, for to him the world of reality is only human practice, as we have already seen; beyond human reality lies the bottomless unknown, about which we can say absolutely nothing, either good or bad, without falling into unstable metaphysics.

[¶79] The only thing known with certainty is the human species with its possibilities, the stream of life whose hot surge and energetic tension we feel within ourselves. For us this is the all-creating, all-encouraging power; it is living truth, beauty, and good, and their source.

[¶80] And the more resolutely Marx refuted everything extra-human that stood above the species, the more sharply he emphasized the primacy of the human collective, of the species, over the human individual. For him the idea of victory is bound up with the species, and only in it, speaking metaphorically, does he see the infant god whose cradle is surrounded by the dull, black serpents of the elemental forces. The beautiful hope for the flowering of this infant’s power, for his growing triumph as he harnesses the dragons, enslaved by the light of consciousness, to his victorious chariot, for the solemn and impetuous flight of this bright son of life through the myriad multitudes of worlds, of being and half-being: this is Marx’s idealism. The ardent feeling of kinship, of belonging to the species, the understanding of the value of personal life only in connection with the grand sweep of collective life: this is Marx’s fundamental feeling, which warms his teaching.

[¶81] The beauty of Marxism and its healing power will always elude individualists, for whom its sense of the world is as incomprehensible, mystical, or absurd as their own religious or antireligious contrivances are shallow, pitiful, and cowardly to us Marxists.
