[¶0] Kant

> Russian: Кант

[¶1] Kant encountered all sorts of difficulties whenever he touched on religion. The powers that be forbade him to unsettle the peacefully believing Germans. Today, however, Kant has indisputably become the principal support of religious consciousness, at least in educated and thinking circles. The latest pragmatism is unquestionably a renewal of Kant. Every religious modernism, unless it gambles on mystical madness (and that is a poor gamble), but instead wishes to reconcile ‘faith with science,’ will return again and again to the great bourgeois of Königsberg.

[¶2] Kant can be properly understood only in connection with the history of the bourgeoisie. At the end of the eighteenth century, the bourgeois came to define himself: he began thoroughly demolishing the foundations of the old feudal society[9](#note-9) and proclaiming the rights of the free individual, for the freely producing and freely competing individual is, after all, the free essence of the bourgeois. In buoyant periods, when the future opens before him, the bourgeois is always a critic of every obscurity and prejudice, a nihilist who will acknowledge nothing but the individual and his advantage; the bourgeois is a nihilist and an anarchist. When he is cheerful and confident, it seems to him that individuals, once granted freedom, will be able to arrange their lives harmoniously, following the laws of reason and the laws of economics: egoism, in his opinion, is an entirely sufficient guide. In practice, however, the bourgeois very soon notices that this is not so. The petty bourgeois notices it before the others. While his successful competitor, riding on his back, continues to praise the principles of free competition, he himself, squeezed out, ruined, and exploited, begins to cry out against unbridled individualism and demand a universally binding morality, protective laws, a religion that restrains the individual’s appetites, and so forth. Later, the upper strata join this tendency of the lower bourgeois strata, partly because they themselves experience the dangers of competition, and partly because they fear the proletariat, which draws the most unpleasant conclusions from the bourgeoisie’s youthful amoralism.

[¶3] Kant embodied the transition from the Enlightenment, with its faith in freedom and humanity’s natural inclinations, and its hostility to decrepit dogmatism, to ‘moralism,’ to a renewed elevation of the principle of ‘virtue’ above everything else. Kant’s critical doctrine places him alongside Diderot; Kant’s categorical imperative and God coincide with Robespierre’s inviolable law of the state and Supreme Being. We must confine our general characterization of Kant to these lines, hoping to devote a separate study to him.[10](#note-10) What matters for us is to examine two sets of Kant’s ideas, which are of course closely interconnected: his doctrine of humanity and his doctrine of God.

[¶4] The doctrine of humanity. In the first period of his activity, Kant was close to optimism concerning humanity, to the hopeful ideas of Helvétius or Condorcet. In 1764 he published ‘Observations on the Feeling of the Beautiful and the Sublime.’[11](#note-11) Here he bases all his hopes for humanity’s moral renewal on the feeling for beauty and human dignity inherent in people (aesthetic morality). He is not, in this connection, afraid of the actual diversity of human feelings: morality for him is a psychological phenomenon, and its forms and development depend, in his opinion, on ‘sex, age, education, form of government, climate, and race.’

[¶5] But time passed. The course of events in France, and indeed in Europe generally, destroyed faith in the bourgeois individual’s inherently good feelings, in the complete ‘purposiveness’ of freedom; and since Kant naturally identified the bourgeois individual with the human being, he became disillusioned with people.

[¶6] The proletariat is bound into a certain unity insofar as it already represents combined labor, socialized production. The bourgeois, by contrast, represents either fragmented labor (handicraft) or individual appropriation that has grown parasitically upon socialized labor. Thus, when bourgeois individuals wish to create their own society, they need an external bond of an extrasocial kind: law and morality, the state and God.

[¶7] In the last decades of the eighteenth century, Kant developed his supra-empirical morality. Humanity now turns out to be a lazy and fainthearted race; the human character is ‘stupidity with an admixture of malice’! Human beings are ‘an accursed race.’ But Kant’s great mind, analyzing the struggle among people, discerned that this very struggle, without their knowing it, creates an unquestionably better future. He came close to certain propositions of scientific socialism, which likewise derives humanity’s economic growth in part from the destructive internecine struggle of individuals and classes. Kant now considers the individual’s situation hopeless, but he hopes for the progress of the species.

[¶8] In ‘Ideas toward a Universal History,’ he develops this thought in a highly interesting way. The human being takes shape, grows, and attains fullness of existence only gradually, in the life of the species. One generation begins where another leaves off. For the individual, however, this progress brings much suffering and little consolation. This is very similar to certain ideas of Marx (for example, in his famous remarks on Malthus and Ricardo[12](#note-12)).

[¶9] But there is a difference, too: Marx the socialist considers it entirely possible for the individual to identify with the species and live its life; Kant, however, does not point to this psychological way out. Kant does not say: the development of the species is naturally the individual’s goal. No, he says: happiness therefore cannot be the individual’s goal; he must merely try to become worthy of happiness! Personal moralism in place of social aestheticism! Yet Kant does not count very much on morality either, but rather on the mechanical result of struggle:

[¶10] > ‘Living together, people wage an unceasing struggle with one another. They need one another, but their ambition and greed give rise to struggle: a struggle among individual persons and among states. This struggle is necessary, for otherwise the race would perish through inactivity and its capacities would not develop. Trees in a forest try to deprive one another of light and air, but in doing so they compel one another to seek light and air in higher regions, and thus acquire their beautiful, tall, and slender growth. All culture and art, every social order, is a product of antisocial tendencies whose mutual struggle compels people to submit to order and develop nature’s gifts to their full perfection.’

[¶11] This worldview, so ‘bleak’ for the bourgeois individual, cannot long be maintained by the bourgeoisie. The proletariat, however, modifies it in the sense that, as a conscious class whose interests coincide with those of the development of the species, it distinguishes itself from the social forces that serve progress only unconsciously. For the past, however, Kant’s construction is on the whole acceptable.[13](#note-13)

[¶12] But Kant himself, occupied with the individual’s fate and with the present, nevertheless had to find some other way out besides the historical one. Apart from the future, however, there is only one way out of reality: into the supernatural. And Kant entered upon Calvin’s path, as was to be expected. The consideration that the goals of the species must somehow be imposed on the individual served as the transition to pure moralism, to the elaboration of inflexible rules of conduct that would direct the bourgeois individual’s predatory and vicious soul onto the true path, and to the enormous labor of justifying, exalting, and strengthening these rules. What for the proletarian, for the human being of the new social cooperation, is a free aesthetics, the natural result of his social feelings, is for the bourgeois individual something incomprehensible and mysterious, imposed on him from outside and in no way connected with his living personality. Høffding, who gave an excellent analysis of the evolution of Kant’s moral views in his work ‘The Development of Kantian Ethics,’[14](#note-14) says of this:

[¶13] > ‘The sublime, absolute, unconditional character that the moral law acquires in Kant’s eyes, in contrast to the individual’s sensuous nature and limited capacity, is naturally explained by the fact that this law is the goal of the species manifesting itself in the consciousness of the separate individual. This is the wondrous aspect of the moral law, as of all other instincts of the species.[15](#note-15) The great contrast that, in Kant’s opinion, exists in history between the individual’s goal and the goal of the species prompted him to recognize an equally sharp distinction between the moral law and all the empirically given elements of human nature.’

[¶14] The bourgeois individual’s lack of social feeling thus had to be compensated for by morality.

[¶15] Without dwelling here on a detailed analysis of Kantian morality, now built upon complete distrust of the natural human being, let us note that, in order to exalt the categorical imperative, that excellent assistant to the police and the law, Kant took pains to secure its autonomy. The bourgeois individual, gripped in the iron vise of the social interest, had to feel himself a ‘free’ person. This is one of the amusing antinomies of the bourgeoisie. But once again this position is untenable. Despite all the assurances that the autonomous individual invariably ‘autonomously submits’ to morality, there was little hope of this in the empirical world; in serious cases Kant did not, of course, disdain harsh measures of a police character either. Thus he teaches:

[¶16] > ‘Punishment must be imposed not as a means of promoting the good of society or of the criminal himself, but solely because the criminal willed his act. We would be regarding a human being as a means, as a thing, if we wished to base punishment on anything other than retribution (!). Retribution is a categorical imperative (!). Punishment should not be carried out in order to produce a benefit; rather, it must be carried out however great the harm that may follow. If a people were preparing to migrate elsewhere, they would first have to execute their murderers.’

[¶17] But all these ingenious interweavings of the autonomous categorical imperative with corporal punishment and the death penalty yielded nothing new. Morality supplements the police; it performs police duty there, in the recesses of the soul, in the details of everyday life, in short, in those regions that the authority enforcing the law cannot penetrate. This is why autonomous morality in Kant, as in Calvin and even Robespierre, needed one further support: God. For God knows and perceives everything, judges everything, punishes and rewards. The bourgeoisie needs a strong authority in the sphere of hidden things as well, in the moral sphere; and here God is indispensable.

[¶18] Empirical reality, it is true, contradicts at every turn the tales of the justice of the world’s ruler; but surely we can postulate a ‘correction’ beyond the grave, or in the world beyond generally, to the absurdity of our actual existence! Little by little, autonomous morality proved to be connected, in Kant too, with divine sanction and reward beyond the grave.

[¶19] It was very important, in this connection, to defend complete freedom of the will, the sense of responsibility. In the bourgeois world, where man is a wolf to man, restrained only by law and morality, the denial of freedom of the will can lead to a sense of irresponsibility and the notorious ‘Smerdyakovism.’

[¶20] Thus, from the youthful faith in the feeling for beauty and human dignity, supposedly guiding people free of empirical bondage, from this idea in which the revolutionary bourgeoisie outgrew itself, we pass with Kant first to the desperate opposition between humanity, unconsciously perfecting itself, and the lazy and wicked individual, and then to religious morality, that traditional element of disintegrating bourgeois society.
