Fichte

The tragic contradictions that Kant vainly tried to overcome are the contradictions of the egalitarian bourgeoisie, the contradictions of bourgeois freedom. Fichte’s tragedy is of a higher order, perhaps approaching that experienced by Babeuf. Fichte is an extreme revolutionary and individualist, the far-left type of bourgeois who is already dialectically ceasing to be one. Fichte’s entire worldview bears the stamp of duality, for it is an internally contradictory amalgam of revolutionary individualism (the left pole of the bourgeoisie) and socialist supra-individualism (collectivism). But the insufficient development of the social life of Fichte’s time prevented him from bringing his mind’s socialist inclinations to full clarity. Instead, the consciousness of individualism’s inadequacy drove him toward romantic mysticism.

Johann Gottlieb Fichte was, by his very origins, a true democrat, a man of the people. He was the son of a Saxon peasant (born in 1762) and spent his childhood spinning or tending the village geese.

His first literary works flow into the great current of revolutionary literature generated by the great events in France. He subjected all theories of revelation to devastating criticism and championed freedom of thought and speech. When most German publicists, and even Schiller himself, recoiled from the French Revolution, frightened by the Terror, Fichte fearlessly continued to defend revolutionary ideals.

Fichte’s life was turbulent, filled with constant clashes with students, colleagues, and the authorities. Goethe himself considered him a troublesome man and took part in the rather shameful expulsion of the revolutionary philosopher from the University of Jena. Nevertheless, in the difficult years for Germany (1806 and 1806), the nation recognized him as its teacher in life; in 1807 his addresses to the German nation resounded, a model of political writing at its highest. Throughout 1806 the philosopher worked in the army as a preacher. He aspired to do the same in the subsequent years of the war of liberation and died after contracting the disease that was raging among the German volunteers, in the military hospital where his wife worked.

Fichte considered spiritual laziness the most terrible sin and the father of all sins. To work, to struggle, tirelessly to advance and lead others toward the ideal of the spirit’s freedom and its victory over every form of bondage: this was both the chief principle and the chief character trait of this peasant’s son. He approached philosophy, too, from this active, practical standpoint.

Fichte is the greatest representative of voluntarism in philosophy. First, it is beyond doubt for him that our ‘I’ is will, that cognition plays a subordinate role, and that a person’s outlook is conditioned by the direction of his will. Fichte saw clearly the two main channels of philosophy: one can study things and subject them to objective law, and one can grasp the laws of one’s own human spirit, struggle with things, and overcome them. Fichte held that every active nature must take a further step toward voluntarism: recognize not only that will determines a person’s worldview, but also that, through labor and struggle, it can determine reality itself. This resembles Russian subjectivism, but, with certain additions, of course, it is also not far from Marxism. Marx, too, thinks that will (interest) determines consciousness, rather than the reverse, and that practice underlies ideology; but whereas Fichte stopped at ‘will,’ Marx analyzed the socioeconomic causes of this or that direction taken by the interests guiding it. Likewise, in treating will as something capable of rising above things, Fichte is closer to Marx than even the bourgeois materialists are. Later, however, it became clear to Fichte that the ‘I’ does not itself determine its character, and that our empirical personality, the life of each individual, is by no means exhausted by its concrete consciousness, that small, wavering circle of light on the summit of the dark mountain whose base descends into the depths of the abysses of eternity, and which we call our organism. In his ‘Guidance toward the Blessed Life,’ Fichte sets aside the personal will of which he spoke earlier and comes closer to Schopenhauer’s will, to the elemental, impersonal life that quivers within us and acts through us. But Fichte could not develop this idea. First of all, it was necessary to comprehend the individual as an element of society, as a particular moment expressing the life and consciousness of the human species under given historical, class, and group conditions. Society lives; classes live; the individual is a mode of their development, a particular expression of them, incomprehensible outside the collective. Fichte, however, steps over society directly to the concept of life in general. And even here he did not grasp the individual as a reflection of actual life as investigated by science, that is, as a link in the chain of organic nature’s development. If the time had not yet come for scientific socialism, neither had it come for philosophical-biological analysis. Darwin and Marx open the era of studying the individual in his connection with society, the universe, and their past. Fichte could only divine, as the brilliant Schelling divined after him, as the ponderously brilliant Hegel divined.

And precisely because the forces of the human collective, on the one hand, and the forces of the organic development of life, on the other (that is, environment and history), which acted through the individual and made him their instrument and sometimes their plaything, were unclear to Fichte, his new awareness of the ocean of will and life behind individuals took on a mythical coloring.

Nevertheless, Fichte did manage to understand the synthesis of the subjective and the social; glimmering before him was a conception of the universe as a stream of forces organizing themselves, yet still unorganized and continually obstructing one another. He, the pinnacle of the revolutionary bourgeoisie, who fearlessly began to speak of socialism, the philosophical Babeuf, spoke a blessing ‘yes’ to this stream of will, which later evoked a feeling of vexation, bitterness, and weariness in the reactionary bourgeois Schopenhauer.

Fichte’s idealism was the ultimate conclusion of his voluntarism.

It seemed to Fichte that the soulless environment, nature, could be acknowledged as conquerable by reason only if things were declared to be a peculiar product of spirit. In realizing their freedom, the human being and humanity encounter obstacles in the world of things. How is this to be understood? Fichte explains: the struggle for freedom is the essence of spirit; therefore spirit has evidently created an obstacle for itself in order to overcome it, and matter has no other meaning.

In Fichte’s account, only the good, useful, purposive actions of spirit truly exist; everything else, whatever is hostile or indifferent to them, is merely a peculiar mirage, an apparent being from which the world is progressively purified.

Fichte himself acknowledged that his idealism was dictated to him by a practical consideration. He supposes that an active soul will not wish to submit to things, and will therefore develop a view of them as inessential forces, fragile in the face of spirit.

This was a profoundly mistaken conclusion. Its inevitability for Fichte can be understood only if we recall how humiliatingly weak the barely awakened, genuinely human, freedom-loving spirit must have felt itself to be in his time. Fichte was terribly alone in the Germany of those days. It was precisely the sorrowful awareness of the appalling weakness of the spirit seeking freedom in a wretched Germany of philistinism and police rule that compelled him to embark on an almost maniacal exaltation of the powers of spirit.

The poor man suffers from both drought and flood, from injustice in the courts, the rich man’s greed, and the marauder’s raid.

Where is justice? And some Amos consoles himself and the poor man, saying: endure, for God is stronger than nature, than the foreigner, than the nobleman; behind you stands God, almighty and all-good, preparing his vengeance.

Powerlessness everywhere leads to dreams. Fichte’s idealism repeated the same thing in other words: nature and its elemental forces are nothing before the breath of God’s lips; only his God is different, still more refined by philosophical thought than that of Amos or Jeremiah.

Scientific socialism is a force, and therefore has no inclination to dream. It recognizes the existence of things as possessing just as much power as the existence of our will. If the human being is a force, then resisting nature, too, is an aggregate of forces. This is particularly clear in social struggle. The reactionary classes are a force opposing the struggling and growing force of the proletariat. The hope of victory rests not on regarding the proletariat, for example, as reality and everything resisting it as a bad dream, but on reckoning with the greater organization of the proletariat’s forces, the tendency toward an increase in its numbers and a rise in its degree of organization, inseparably connected with the growth of society’s productive forces. For Fichte, spirit alone is a force; everything else is its tormenting fantasy, necessary for its self-purification. For us, spirit is the same ‘matter’; human forces are a part, and moreover a constantly changing part, of nature. There is a profound fundamental unity, a dynamic monism, where Fichte has dualism (spirit–representation). At the same time, however, there is a resemblance to Fichte here too: while recognizing ‘spirit,’ and especially its highest bearer, the socialist proletariat, as fundamentally ‘of one substance’ with the rest of human, animal, and inorganic nature, scientific socialism also recognizes the primary importance of the struggle of nature’s highest organisms against the rest of their environment, which is less highly organized and dangerous to the delicate flowers of a genius conscious of itself and striving toward freedom.

Despite his peculiar terminology, in which consciousness, reason, and spirit are called the ‘I,’ and the environment the ‘not-I,’ the great Fichte was far from solipsism; he had outgrown bourgeois individualism altogether and already saw the new world, the world of collectivism, although it was still shrouded in the mist of distance. He felt that the ‘I’ was not the creator of the world, not the bearer of the whole of spirit. But who, then, was?

Høffding says on this subject:

> ‘Fichte advances the proposition that everything we find in consciousness must be a consequence of the “I,” but at the same time he shows that our consciousness contains much that we are aware of as not produced by ourselves. The “I” that we know from experience is always limited, included within a system of limits, and has objects outside itself (various kinds of “not-I”) that it has not itself produced. Consequently, a principle broader than the finite (empirical) “I” must be active in consciousness; only in the “I” that Fichte calls pure or infinite should we seek the foundation of the world of objects or limitations within which our finite “I” is included.’

What, then, is this great ‘I’ that embraces all individuals: an all-powerful and clearly conscious spirit, or a nature that creates madly, prodigally, abundantly, and without a soul? How are consciousness and elemental power combined? In empirical reality we know this, but in transcendent ‘reality’? This was Fichte’s fatal step. Yet even here his strength made itself felt. He landed in the dark corner of metaphysical idealism precisely because he sensed the reality of nature, which he had initially declared a dream, and the accursed narrowness and inadequacy of the empirical ‘I.’ Fichte’s mysticism is a premonition of the social and realistic worldview that the proletariat will bring with it, together with socialism.

Fichte’s morality is also permeated by duality. Its starting point was the Kantianism of Kant’s best period:

> ‘At the highest point of development, the feeling of self-respect generates the capacity to set oneself models for one’s conduct in complete freedom and independence. Only such freely and independently created models are capable of arousing a living feeling.’

This individualism is more apparent than real and does not contradict collectivism, for the new collectivism is a voluntary fusion of individuals, a synthesis, rather than the pre-individualist, amorphous community of persons who have not yet become conscious of themselves. ‘Each separate act of mine must belong to a single series leading me toward perfect spiritual freedom.’ Individualism is already imbued with a consciously accepted goal of the species, for in place of the infinite ‘I’ we must put the human race (or, more broadly, life), as Kant himself had already done for a time. But to Kant it seemed immeasurably difficult to connect the egoistic individual with the goal of the species; to Fichte it seems easy. One has the ordinary bourgeois in mind, the other almost a hero.

Let us now present, following Høffding’s lucid summary, Fichte’s ideas of a now definitively supra-individualist character.

> ‘The fact that a human being lives in association with other people has important and decisive significance. Only among human beings is he human. In essence, the entire multiplicity of individuals pursues a single goal: the realization of the idea of the “I.” From an ethical standpoint, my personality does not represent the highest value for me. But it is the sole means by which I can act in the name of what is higher. What in religious language is called the community of saints signifies the manifestation of the pure “I” in the totality of rational beings. In relation to this infinite goal, the individual person is merely a means or instrument of transitory significance. For the individual person, the task is to abolish his individuality, not through mystical renunciation but through active work in the name of the eternal goal. In his later writings, Fichte speaks still more sternly of the transitory significance of the separate person, in strange contradiction to the weight he places on individuality on other occasions. Ultimately, individuality proves for him to be what ought not to exist, a limitation that must be removed, a negation that is abolished. The pure “I”[16](#note-16) utterly annihilates the empirical “I.”’

Høffding himself sees in this a strange contradiction with Fichte’s individualism. In fact, it is logic itself: the logic of social development leading from the summit of heroic individualism to collectivism. The hero is the most vivid individuality. Yet heroism amounts to the need to live and die for great common goals. Fichte arrived at socialist wisdom in life through a theory of moral heroism. With what enthusiasm he would have joined the ranks of the revolutionary proletariat, had he lived to see it enter the struggle!

Schmoller considers Fichte Germany’s first socialist writer. In Fichte, scientific socialism has a great precursor. As in a mirror, dimly, he foresees the truth.

There is no place in his religion for a personal God: it is merely the law of human activity.

> ‘The essence of religion consists in a person’s belief in a moral world order, in that divine principle which stands above all that is transitory, and in his regarding each of his duties as proceeding from this order and contributing its share to its development. It could not be called an order if it were finished once and for all; on the contrary, it is in a process of constant development.’

At first glance, the expression ‘moral world order’ may be jarring; in fact, this concept raises Fichte above pantheism. The pantheist, the cosmist, calls on us to believe in a universal order imposed on the human being from outside and to conform our lives to it. With the word ‘moral,’ Fichte rejects the sanctity, in human eyes, of any nonhuman order. Thus what is higher, standing above the individual, ultimately proves to be humanity’s historical task, the development of the species toward ever greater power.

Marx, of course, never used the word religion to designate the emotional side of socialism; but both theoretically and practically he recognized the essence of Fichtean religion, which binds the individual to the destinies of the collective, as the basis of proletarian morality, although naturally without a trace of metaphysical coloring.

Every socialist, however ‘scientific,’ ‘objective,’ and ‘sober’ his principles may be, will approve the words with which Fichte greeted the French Revolution:

> ‘No, do not abandon us, sacred palladium of humanity, consoling thought that from each of our labors and each of our sufferings there flows new perfection and new joy for our brothers; that we work for them, and do not work in vain; that in the place where we now toil and are trampled underfoot, and, worse still, fall into gross delusions and errors, a generation will one day blossom that will always dare to do what it wishes, because it will wish for nothing but the good!’ > > ‘Inspire us, hope of that time, for the sake of our sense of dignity, and show it to us at least in our potentialities, even if our present generation contradicts it. Pour courage and lofty enthusiasm upon our undertakings.’
