And when your body breaks up, after death, you’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. These are the five drawbacks of bad conduct.

> Pali: “Pañcime, bhikkhave, ādīnavā duccarite. Katame pañca? Attāpi attānaṁ upavadati; anuvicca viññū garahanti; pāpako kittisaddo abbhuggacchati; sammūḷho kālaṁ karoti; kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjati. Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca ādīnavā duccarite.

[¶20] AN 5.249 · A Charnel Ground

> Pali: AN 5.249 · Sivathikasutta

[¶21] “Mendicants, there are these five drawbacks to a charnel ground. What five?

> Pali: “Pañcime, bhikkhave, ādīnavā sivathikāya. Katame pañca?

[¶22] It’s filthy, stinking, frightening, a gathering place for savage monsters, and a weeping place for many people. These are the five drawbacks of a charnel ground.

> Pali: Asuci, duggandhā, sappaṭibhayā, vāḷānaṁ amanussānaṁ āvāso, bahuno janassa ārodanā— ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca ādīnavā sivathikāya.

[¶23] In the same way there are five drawbacks of an individual like a charnel ground. What five? To start with, an individual has filthy conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. This is how they’re filthy, I say. That individual is just as filthy as a charnel ground.

> Pali: Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcime ādīnavā sivathikūpame puggale. Katame pañca? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo asucinā kāyakammena samannāgato hoti; asucinā vacīkammena samannāgato hoti; asucinā manokammena samannāgato hoti. Idamassa asucitāya vadāmi. Seyyathāpi sā, bhikkhave, sivathikā asuci; tathūpamāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi.

[¶24] Because of their filthy conduct, they get a bad reputation. This is how they’re stinky, I say. That individual is just as stinky as a charnel ground.

> Pali: Tassa asucinā kāyakammena samannāgatassa, asucinā vacīkammena samannāgatassa, asucinā manokammena samannāgatassa pāpako kittisaddo abbhuggacchati. Idamassa duggandhatāya vadāmi. Seyyathāpi sā, bhikkhave, sivathikā duggandhā; tathūpamāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi.

[¶25] Because of their filthy conduct, good-hearted spiritual companions avoid them from afar. That’s how they’re frightening, I say. That individual is just as frightening as a charnel ground.

> Pali: Tamenaṁ asucinā kāyakammena samannāgataṁ, asucinā vacīkammena samannāgataṁ, asucinā manokammena samannāgataṁ pesalā sabrahmacārī ārakā parivajjanti. Idamassa sappaṭibhayasmiṁ vadāmi. Seyyathāpi sā, bhikkhave, sivathikā sappaṭibhayā; tathūpamāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi.

[¶26] Because of their filthy conduct, they live together with individuals of a similar character. This is how they gather with savage monsters, I say. That individual is just as much a gathering place of savage monsters as a charnel ground.

> Pali: So asucinā kāyakammena samannāgato, asucinā vacīkammena samannāgato, asucinā manokammena samannāgato sabhāgehi puggalehi saddhiṁ saṁvasati. Idamassa vāḷāvāsasmiṁ vadāmi. Seyyathāpi sā, bhikkhave, sivathikā vāḷānaṁ amanussānaṁ āvāso; tathūpamāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi.

[¶27] Because of their filthy conduct, when good-hearted spiritual companions see them they complain: ‘Oh, it’s so painful for us to have to live together with such as these.’ This is how there’s weeping, I say. This person is just as much a weeping place for many people as a charnel ground.

> Pali: Tamenaṁ asucinā kāyakammena samannāgataṁ, asucinā vacīkammena samannāgataṁ, asucinā manokammena samannāgataṁ pesalā sabrahmacārī disvā khīyadhammaṁ āpajjanti: ‘aho vata no dukkhaṁ ye mayaṁ evarūpehi puggalehi saddhiṁ saṁvasāmā’ti. Idamassa ārodanāya vadāmi. Seyyathāpi sā, bhikkhave, sivathikā bahuno janassa ārodanā; tathūpamāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi.

[¶28] These are the five drawbacks of an individual like a charnel ground.”

> Pali: Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca ādīnavā sivathikūpame puggale”ti.

[¶29] > Pali: Navamaṁ.

[¶30] AN 5.250 · Faith in Individuals

> Pali: AN 5.250 · Puggalappasādasutta

[¶31] “Mendicants, there are these five drawbacks of placing faith in an individual. What five?

> Pali: “Pañcime, bhikkhave, ādīnavā puggalappasāde. Katame pañca?

[¶32] The individual to whom an individual is devoted falls into an offense such that the Saṅgha suspends them. It occurs to them: ‘This individual dear and beloved to me has been suspended by the Saṅgha.’ They lose much of their faith in mendicants. So they don’t frequent other mendicants, they don’t hear the true teaching, and they fall away from the true teaching. This is the first drawback in placing faith in an individual.

> Pali: Yasmiṁ, bhikkhave, puggale puggalo abhippasanno hoti, so tathārūpaṁ āpattiṁ āpanno hoti yathārūpāya āpattiyā saṅgho ukkhipati. Tassa evaṁ hoti: ‘yo kho myāyaṁ puggalo piyo manāpo so saṅghena ukkhitto’ti. Bhikkhūsu appasādabahulo hoti. Bhikkhūsu appasādabahulo samāno aññe bhikkhū na bhajati. Aññe bhikkhū abhajanto saddhammaṁ na suṇāti. Saddhammaṁ asuṇanto saddhammā parihāyati. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭhamo ādīnavo puggalappasāde.

[¶33] Furthermore, the individual to whom an individual is devoted falls into an offense such that the Saṅgha makes them sit at the end of the line. … This is the second drawback in placing faith in an individual.

> Pali: Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, yasmiṁ puggale puggalo abhippasanno hoti, so tathārūpaṁ āpattiṁ āpanno hoti yathārūpāya āpattiyā saṅgho ante nisīdāpeti. Tassa evaṁ hoti: ‘yo kho myāyaṁ puggalo piyo manāpo so saṅghena ante nisīdāpito’ti. Bhikkhūsu appasādabahulo hoti. Bhikkhūsu appasādabahulo samāno aññe bhikkhū na bhajati. Aññe bhikkhū abhajanto saddhammaṁ na suṇāti. Saddhammaṁ asuṇanto saddhammā parihāyati. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, dutiyo ādīnavo puggalappasāde.

[¶34] Furthermore, the individual to whom an individual is devoted leaves for another region … disrobes … passes away. It occurs to them: ‘This individual dear and beloved to me has passed away.’ So they don’t frequent other mendicants, they don’t hear the true teaching, and they fall away from the true teaching. This is the fifth drawback in placing faith in an individual.

> Pali: Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, yasmiṁ puggale puggalo abhippasanno hoti, so disāpakkanto hoti …pe… so vibbhanto hoti …pe… so kālaṅkato hoti. Tassa evaṁ hoti: ‘yo kho myāyaṁ puggalo piyo manāpo so kālaṅkato’ti. Aññe bhikkhū na bhajati. Aññe bhikkhū abhajanto saddhammaṁ na suṇāti. Saddhammaṁ asuṇanto saddhammā parihāyati. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, pañcamo ādīnavo puggalappasāde.

[¶35] These are the five drawbacks of placing faith in an individual.”

> Pali: Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca ādīnavā puggalappasāde”ti.

[¶36] > Pali: Dasamaṁ.

[¶37] > Pali: Duccaritavaggo pañcamo.

[¶38] > Pali: Tassuddānaṁ

[¶39] > Pali: Duccaritaṁ kāyaduccaritaṁ,
Vacīduccaritaṁ manoduccaritaṁ;
Catūhi pare dve sivathikā,
Puggalappasādena cāti.

[¶40] > Pali: Pañcamo paṇṇāsako samatto.
