[¶69] Outside the walls they stand and wait,
at the junctions and the crossroads.
Returning to their former homes
they wait beside the door posts.

> Pali: Tirokuṭṭesu tiṭṭhanti,
sandhisiṅghāṭakesu ca;
Dvārabāhāsu tiṭṭhanti,
āgantvāna sakaṁ gharaṁ.

[¶70] But when lavish food and drink
of many kinds is set out,
no one remembers them at all,
because of those beings’s deeds.

> Pali: Pahūte annapānamhi,
khajjabhojje upaṭṭhite;
Na tesaṁ koci sarati,
sattānaṁ kammapaccayā.

[¶71] That’s why those who have compassion
give to their relatives
food and drink at the right time,
that’s clean, delicious, and suitable.

> Pali: Evaṁ dadanti ñātīnaṁ,
ye honti anukampakā;
Suciṁ paṇītaṁ kālena,
kappiyaṁ pānabhojanaṁ.

[¶72] “May this be for our relatives!
May our relatives be happy!”
Those ghosts who have gathered there,
the departed relatives who have come

> Pali: Idaṁ vo ñātīnaṁ hotu,
sukhitā hontu ñātayo;
Te ca tattha samāgantvā,
ñātipetā samāgatā.

[¶73] for the lavish food and drink
gratefully express appreciation:
“May our relatives live long!
For those to whom we owe this gain,

> Pali: Pahūte annapānamhi,
sakkaccaṁ anumodare;
Ciraṁ jīvantu no ñātī,
yesaṁ hetu labhāmase.

[¶74] who have given honor to us,
it will not be fruitless for the donor.”
There is no farming there,
no cow pasture can be found;

> Pali: Amhākañca katā pūjā,
dāyakā ca anipphalā;
Na hi tattha kasī atthi,
gorakkhettha na vijjati.

[¶75] likewise there’s no trading,
and no commerce in gold coin.
The departed, the dead in that place
live on what is given here.

> Pali: Vaṇijjā tādisī natthi,
hiraññena kayākayaṁ;
Ito dinnena yāpenti,
petā kālagatā tahiṁ.

[¶76] Just as water that rains on high
flows down to the plains,
so too what is given here
aids the departed ghosts.

> Pali: Unname udakaṁ vuṭṭhaṁ,
yathā ninnaṁ pavattati;

swell the ocean seas
so too what is given here
aids the departed ghosts.

give offerings to departed kin,
remembering past deeds.

pubbe katamanussaraṁ.

[¶79] For neither tears nor grief
or other lamentations
are of any use to the departed,
so long as their relatives stay like this.

> Pali: Na hi ruṇṇaṁ vā soko vā,
yā caññā paridevanā;
Na taṁ petānamatthāya,
evaṁ tiṭṭhanti ñātayo.

[¶80] This offering that has been given,
well placed in the Saṅgha,
is for their lasting welfare,
and aids them right away.

> Pali: Ayañca kho dakkhiṇā dinnā,
saṅghamhi suppatiṭṭhitā;
Dīgharattaṁ hitāyassa,
ṭhānaso upakappati.

[¶81] The relative’s duty has now been shown:
how high honor to departed is performed,
how the mendicants can be kept strong,
and how no little merit is produced by you.

> Pali: So ñātidhammo ca ayaṁ nidassito,
Petāna pūjā ca katā uḷārā;
Balañca bhikkhūnamanuppadinnaṁ,
Tumhehi puññaṁ pasutaṁ anappakanti.

[¶82] > Pali: Tirokuṭṭasuttaṁ.

[¶83] Kp 8 · A Treasure Trove

> Pali: Kp 8 · Nidhikaṇḍasutta

[¶84] A person stores away their savings
in a deep trove by the water’s edge:
“When need arises
it will be there to help

> Pali: Nidhiṁ nidheti puriso,
gambhīre odakantike;
Atthe kicce samuppanne,
atthāya me bhavissati.

[¶85] free me from rulers if I am slandered,
or from bandits if harassed,
or to release me from debt,
or in case of famine or losses.”
What the world calls savings
get stored away for such reasons.

> Pali: Rājato vā duruttassa,
corato pīḷitassa vā;
Iṇassa vā pamokkhāya,
dubbhikkhe āpadāsu vā;
Etadatthāya lokasmiṁ,
nidhi nāma nidhīyati.

[¶86] But no matter how well stored away they are
in a deep pit by the water’s edge,
all their savings will fail
to aid them all the time.

> Pali: Tāvassunihito santo,
gambhīre odakantike;
Na sabbo sabbadā eva,
tassa taṁ upakappati.

[¶87] For perhaps those savings shift from there,
or they forget what marks the site,
or dragons make off with them,
or spirits carry them away,

> Pali: Nidhi vā ṭhānā cavati,
saññā vāssa vimuyhati;
Nāgā vā apanāmenti,
yakkhā vāpi haranti naṁ.

[¶88] or unloved heirs
secretly unearth them.
When their merit is used up,
all of that will vanish.

> Pali: Appiyā vāpi dāyādā,
uddharanti apassato;
Yadā puññakkhayo hoti,
sabbametaṁ vinassati.

[¶89] But by giving and morality,
restraint and self-control,
a woman or man
keeps their savings safe.

> Pali: Yassa dānena sīlena,
saṁyamena damena ca;
Nidhī sunihito hoti,
itthiyā purisassa vā.

[¶90] At a shrine or with the Saṅgha,
with mother or father,
or else an elder sibling,

> Pali: Cetiyamhi ca saṅghe vā,
puggale atithīsu vā;
Mātari pitari cāpi,
atho jeṭṭhamhi bhātari.

[¶91] those savings are kept safe,
they stay with you, undecaying.
We must go on leaving all behind,
only this you take when you go.

> Pali: Eso nidhi sunihito,
ajeyyo anugāmiko;
Pahāya gamanīyesu,
etaṁ ādāya gacchati.

[¶92] You don’t have to share it with others,
no thief makes off with your savings.
An attentive one would make merit,
the savings that stay with you.

> Pali: Asādhāraṇamaññesaṁ,
acorāharaṇo nidhi;
Kayirātha dhīro puññāni,
yo nidhi anugāmiko.

[¶93] Such savings grant every desire
of gods and humans too.
Whatever it is that they wish for
through this they have it all.

> Pali: Esa devamanussānaṁ,
sabbakāmadado nidhi;
Yaṁ yadevābhipatthenti,
sabbametena labbhati.

[¶94] Good looks, a sweet voice,
a good shape, and good appearance,
leadership and followers:
through this they have it all.

> Pali: Suvaṇṇatā susaratā,
susaṇṭhānā surūpatā;
Ādhipaccaparivāro,
sabbametena labbhati.

[¶95] Sovereignty of a local kingdom,
the happiness of a Wheel-Turning Monarch,
even kingship in the heavens:
through this they have it all.

> Pali: Padesarajjaṁ issariyaṁ,
