[¶0] SN 22.22 · The Burden of Responsibility

> Pali: SN 22.22 · Bhārasutta

[¶1] At Sāvatthī.

> Pali: Sāvatthiyaṁ … tatra kho …

[¶2] “Mendicants, I will teach you the burden, the bearer of the burden, the taking up of the burden, and the putting down of the burden. Listen …

> Pali: “bhārañca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi bhārahārañca bhārādānañca bhāranikkhepanañca. Taṁ suṇātha.

[¶3] And what is the burden? The five grasping aggregates, it should be said. What five? The grasping aggregates of form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness. This is called the burden.

> Pali: Katamo ca, bhikkhave, bhāro? Pañcupādānakkhandhā tissa vacanīyaṁ. Katame pañca? Rūpupādānakkhandho, vedanupādānakkhandho, saññupādānakkhandho, saṅkhārupādānakkhandho, viññāṇupādānakkhandho; ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhāro.

[¶4] And who is the bearer of the burden? The individual, it should be said; the venerable of such name and such clan. This is called the bearer of the burden.

> Pali: Katamo ca, bhikkhave, bhārahāro? Puggalo tissa vacanīyaṁ. Yvāyaṁ āyasmā evaṁnāmo evaṅgotto; ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhārahāro.

[¶5] And what is the taking up of the burden? It’s the craving that leads to future lives, mixed up with relishing and greed, taking pleasure there wherever it alights. That is, craving for sensual pleasures, craving for continued existence, and craving for nonexistence. This is called the taking up of the burden.

> Pali: Katamañca, bhikkhave, bhārādānaṁ? Yāyaṁ taṇhā ponobhavikā nandīrāgasahagatā tatratatrābhinandinī, seyyathidaṁ— kāmataṇhā, bhavataṇhā, vibhavataṇhā. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhārādānaṁ.

[¶6] And what is the putting down of the burden? It’s the fading away and cessation of that very same craving no residue left behind; giving it away, letting it go, releasing it, and not clinging to it. This is called the putting down of the burden.”

> Pali: Katamañca, bhikkhave, bhāranikkhepanaṁ? Yo tassāyeva taṇhāya asesavirāganirodho cāgo paṭinissaggo mutti anālayo. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhāranikkhepanan”ti.

[¶7] That is what the Buddha said. Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:

> Pali: Idamavoca bhagavā. Idaṁ vatvāna sugato athāparaṁ etadavoca satthā:

[¶8] “The five aggregates are indeed burdens,
and the individual is the bearer of the burden.
Taking up the burden is suffering in the world,
and putting the burden down is happiness.

> Pali: “Bhārā have pañcakkhandhā,
bhārahāro ca puggalo;
Bhārādānaṁ dukhaṁ loke,
bhāranikkhepanaṁ sukhaṁ.

[¶9] When the heavy burden is put down
without taking up another,
one who has plucked out craving, root and all,
is hungerless, quenched.”

> Pali: Nikkhipitvā garuṁ bhāraṁ,
aññaṁ bhāraṁ anādiya;
Samūlaṁ taṇhamabbuyha,
nicchāto parinibbuto”ti.

[¶10] > Pali: Paṭhamaṁ.

> Pali: SN 22.23 · Pariññasutta

[¶12] At Sāvatthī.

[¶13] “Mendicants, I will teach you the things that should be completely understood, and complete understanding. Listen …

> Pali: “Pariññeyye ca, bhikkhave, dhamme desessāmi pariññañca. Taṁ suṇātha.

[¶14] And what things should be completely understood? Form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness. These are called the things that should be completely understood.

> Pali: Katame ca, bhikkhave, pariññeyyā dhammā? Rūpaṁ, bhikkhave, pariññeyyo dhammo, vedanā pariññeyyo dhammo, saññā pariññeyyo dhammo, saṅkhārā pariññeyyo dhammo, viññāṇaṁ pariññeyyo dhammo. Ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, pariññeyyā dhammā.

[¶15] And what is complete understanding? The ending of greed, hate, and delusion. This is called complete understanding.”

> Pali: Katamā ca, bhikkhave, pariññā? Yo, bhikkhave, rāgakkhayo dosakkhayo mohakkhayo. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, pariññā”ti.

[¶16] > Pali: Dutiyaṁ.

[¶17] SN 22.24 · Directly Knowing

> Pali: SN 22.24 · Abhijānasutta

[¶18] At Sāvatthī.

[¶19] “Mendicants, without directly knowing and completely understanding form, without dispassion for it and giving it up, you can’t end suffering.

> Pali: “Rūpaṁ, bhikkhave, anabhijānaṁ aparijānaṁ avirājayaṁ appajahaṁ abhabbo dukkhakkhayāya;

[¶20] Without directly knowing and completely understanding feeling … perception … choices … consciousness, without dispassion for it and giving it up, you can’t end suffering.

> Pali: SN 22.25 · Chandarāgasutta

[¶25] At Sāvatthī.

> Pali: Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

[¶26] “Mendicants, give up desire and greed for form. Thus that form will be given up, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, and unable to arise in the future.

> Pali: “Yo, bhikkhave, rūpasmiṁ chandarāgo taṁ pajahatha. Evaṁ taṁ rūpaṁ pahīnaṁ bhavissati ucchinnamūlaṁ tālāvatthukataṁ anabhāvaṅkataṁ āyatiṁ anuppādadhammaṁ.

[¶31] “Mendicants, before my awakening—when I was still unawakened but intent on awakening—I thought: ‘What’s the gratification, the drawback, and the escape when it comes to form … feeling … perception … choices … and consciousness?’

> Pali: “Pubbeva me, bhikkhave, sambodhā anabhisambuddhassa bodhisattasseva sato etadahosi: ‘ko nu kho rūpassa assādo, ko ādīnavo, kiṁ nissaraṇaṁ? Ko vedanāya assādo, ko ādīnavo, kiṁ nissaraṇaṁ? Ko saññāya assādo, ko ādīnavo, kiṁ nissaraṇaṁ? Ko saṅkhārānaṁ assādo, ko ādīnavo, kiṁ nissaraṇaṁ? Ko viññāṇassa assādo, ko ādīnavo, kiṁ nissaraṇan’ti?

[¶32] Then it occurred to me: ‘The pleasure and happiness that arise from form: this is its gratification. That form is impermanent, suffering, and perishable: this is its drawback. Removing and giving up desire and greed for form: this is its escape. The pleasure and happiness that arise from feeling … perception … choices … consciousness: this is its gratification. That consciousness is impermanent, suffering, and perishable: this is its drawback. Removing and giving up desire and greed for consciousness: this is its escape.’

> Pali: Tassa mayhaṁ, bhikkhave, etadahosi: ‘yaṁ kho rūpaṁ paṭicca uppajjati sukhaṁ somanassaṁ, ayaṁ rūpassa assādo. Yaṁ rūpaṁ aniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vipariṇāmadhammaṁ, ayaṁ rūpassa ādīnavo. [¶33] As long as I didn’t truly understand these five grasping aggregates’ gratification, drawback, and escape in this way for what they are, I didn’t announce my supreme perfect awakening in this world with its gods, Māras, and divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans.

> Pali: Yāvakīvañcāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ pañcannaṁ upādānakkhandhānaṁ evaṁ assādañca assādato ādīnavañca ādīnavato nissaraṇañca nissaraṇato yathābhūtaṁ nābbhaññāsiṁ, neva tāvāhaṁ, bhikkhave, ‘sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya anuttaraṁ sammāsambodhiṁ abhisambuddho’ti paccaññāsiṁ.
