[¶0] SN 35.13 · Before My Awakening (Interior)

> Pali: SN 35.13 · Paṭhamapubbesambodhasutta

[¶1] At Sāvatthī.

> Pali: Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

[¶2] “Mendicants, before my awakening—when I was still unawakened but intent on awakening—I thought: ‘What’s the gratification, the drawback, and the escape when it comes to the eye … ear … nose … tongue … body … and mind?’

> Pali: “Pubbeva me, bhikkhave, sambodhā anabhisambuddhassa bodhisattasseva sato etadahosi: ‘ko nu kho cakkhussa assādo, ko ādīnavo, kiṁ nissaraṇaṁ? Ko sotassa …pe… ko ghānassa … ko jivhāya … ko kāyassa … ko manassa assādo, ko ādīnavo, kiṁ nissaraṇan’ti?

[¶3] Then it occurred to me: ‘The pleasure and happiness that arise from the eye: this is its gratification. That the eye is impermanent, suffering, and perishable: this is its drawback. Removing and giving up desire and greed for the eye: this is its escape.

> Pali: Tassa mayhaṁ, bhikkhave, etadahosi: ‘yaṁ kho cakkhuṁ paṭicca uppajjati sukhaṁ somanassaṁ, ayaṁ cakkhussa assādo. Yaṁ cakkhuṁ aniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vipariṇāmadhammaṁ, ayaṁ cakkhussa ādīnavo. Yo cakkhusmiṁ chandarāgavinayo chandarāgappahānaṁ, idaṁ cakkhussa nissaraṇaṁ.

[¶4] The pleasure and happiness that arise from the ear … nose … tongue … body … mind: this is its gratification. That the mind is impermanent, suffering, and perishable: this is its drawback. Removing and giving up desire and greed for the mind: this is its escape.’

> Pali: Yaṁ sotaṁ …pe… yaṁ ghānaṁ …pe… yaṁ jivhaṁ paṭicca uppajjati sukhaṁ somanassaṁ, ayaṁ jivhāya assādo. Yaṁ jivhā aniccā dukkhā vipariṇāmadhammā, ayaṁ jivhāya ādīnavo. Yo jivhāya chandarāgavinayo chandarāgappahānaṁ, idaṁ jivhāya nissaraṇaṁ. Yaṁ kāyaṁ …pe… yaṁ manaṁ paṭicca uppajjati sukhaṁ somanassaṁ, ayaṁ manassa assādo. Yaṁ mano anicco dukkho vipariṇāmadhammo, ayaṁ manassa ādīnavo. Yo manasmiṁ chandarāgavinayo chandarāgappahānaṁ, idaṁ manassa nissaraṇan’ti.

[¶5] As long as I didn’t truly understand these six interior sense fields’ gratification, drawback, and escape in this way for what they are, I didn’t announce my supreme perfect awakening in this world with its gods, Māras, and divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans.

> Pali: Yāvakīvañcāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ channaṁ ajjhattikānaṁ āyatanānaṁ evaṁ assādañca assādato, ādīnavañca ādīnavato, nissaraṇañca nissaraṇato yathābhūtaṁ nābbhaññāsiṁ, neva tāvāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya ‘anuttaraṁ sammāsambodhiṁ abhisambuddho’ti paccaññāsiṁ.

[¶6] But when I did truly understand these six interior sense fields’ gratification, drawback, and escape in this way for what they are, I announced my supreme perfect awakening in this world with its gods, Māras, and divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans.

> Pali: Yato ca khvāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ channaṁ ajjhattikānaṁ āyatanānaṁ evaṁ assādañca assādato, ādīnavañca ādīnavato, nissaraṇañca nissaraṇato yathābhūtaṁ abbhaññāsiṁ, athāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya ‘anuttaraṁ sammāsambodhiṁ abhisambuddho’ti paccaññāsiṁ.

[¶7] Knowledge and vision arose in me: ‘My freedom is unshakable; this is my last rebirth; now there’ll be no more future lives.’”

> Pali: Ñāṇañca pana me dassanaṁ udapādi: ‘akuppā me vimutti, ayamantimā jāti, natthi dāni punabbhavo’”ti.

[¶8] > Pali: Paṭhamaṁ.

[¶9] SN 35.15 · In Search of Gratification (Interior)

> Pali: SN 35.15 · Paṭhamaassādapariyesanasutta

[¶10] “Mendicants, I went in search of the eye’s gratification, and I found it. I’ve seen clearly with wisdom the full extent of the eye’s gratification. I went in search of the eye’s drawback, and I found it. I’ve seen clearly with wisdom the full extent of the eye’s drawback. I went in search of escape from the eye, and I found it. I’ve seen clearly with wisdom the full extent of escape from the eye.

> Pali: “Cakkhussāhaṁ, bhikkhave, assādapariyesanaṁ acariṁ. Yo cakkhussa assādo tadajjhagamaṁ. Yāvatā cakkhussa assādo paññāya me so sudiṭṭho. Cakkhussāhaṁ, bhikkhave, ādīnavapariyesanaṁ acariṁ. [¶11] I went in search of the ear’s … nose’s … tongue’s … body’s … mind’s gratification, and I found it. I’ve seen clearly with wisdom the full extent of the mind’s gratification. > Pali: Sotassāhaṁ, bhikkhave … ghānassāhaṁ, bhikkhave … jivhāyāhaṁ bhikkhave, assādapariyesanaṁ acariṁ. Yo jivhāya assādo tadajjhagamaṁ. Yāvatā jivhāya assādo paññāya me so sudiṭṭho. [¶12] As long as I didn’t truly understand these six interior sense fields’ gratification, drawback, and escape for what they are, I didn’t announce my supreme perfect awakening …

[¶13] But when I did truly understand …

[¶17] “Mendicants, if there were no gratification in the eye, sentient beings wouldn’t be aroused by it. But since there is gratification in the eye, sentient beings are aroused by it. If the eye had no drawback, sentient beings wouldn’t grow disillusioned with it. But since the eye has a drawback, sentient beings do grow disillusioned with it. If there were no escape from the eye, sentient beings wouldn’t escape from it. But since there is an escape from the eye, sentient beings do escape from it.

[¶19] As long as sentient beings don’t truly understand these six interior sense fields’ gratification, drawback, and escape for what they are, they haven’t escaped from this world—with its gods, Māras, and divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans—and they don’t live detached, liberated, with mind free of boundaries.
