SN 45.34 · Going to the Far Shore

SN 45.34 · Pāraṅgamasutta

At Sāvatthī.

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

“Mendicants, when these eight things are developed and cultivated they lead to going from the near shore to the far shore. What eight? They are right view, right purpose, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion. When these eight things are developed and cultivated they lead to going from the near shore to the far shore.”

“Aṭṭhime, bhikkhave, dhammā bhāvitā bahulīkatā apārā pāraṁ gamanāya saṁvattanti. Katame aṭṭha? Seyyathidaṁ—sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi. Ime kho, bhikkhave, aṭṭha dhammā bhāvitā bahulīkatā apārā pāraṁ gamanāya saṁvattantī”ti.

That is what the Buddha said. Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:

Idamavoca bhagavā. Idaṁ vatvāna sugato athāparaṁ etadavoca satthā:

“Few are those among humanswho cross to the far shore. The rest just runaround on the near shore.

“Appakā te manussesu,ye janā pāragāmino;Athāyaṁ itarā pajā,tīramevānudhāvati.

When the teaching is well explained, the people who practice accordinglywill cross overDeath’s dominion so hard to pass.

Ye ca kho sammadakkhāte,dhamme dhammānuvattino;Te janā pāramessanti, maccudheyyaṁ suduttaraṁ.

Rid of dark qualities,an astute person would develop the bright.Having left home for homelessnessin seclusion, where joy is hard,

Kaṇhaṁ dhammaṁ vippahāya,sukkaṁ bhāvetha paṇḍito;Okā anokamāgamma, viveke yattha dūramaṁ.

they’d long for satisfaction there.Forsaking sensual pleasures, owning nothing,an astute person would cleanse themselvesof mental corruptions.

Tatrābhiratimiccheyya,hitvā kāme akiñcano;Pariyodapeyya attānaṁ,cittaklesehi paṇḍito.

And those whose minds are rightly developedin the awakening factors;who, letting go of attachments, delight in not grasping—with defilements ended, brilliant, they are quenched in this world.”

Yesaṁ sambodhiyaṅgesu,sammā cittaṁ subhāvitaṁ;Ādānapaṭinissagge,anupādāya ye ratā;Khīṇāsavā jutimanto,te loke parinibbutā”ti.
