[¶0] While the centenary of the ‘great revolution’ was being celebrated in Paris with much noise and splendour, an event took place at the other end of the Old World that attracted little notice, yet was no less important in its consequences than Louis XVI’s convocation of the Estates-General. The Chinese government took a firm decision to equip its country with the material instruments of European civilisation. On 27 August of last year, 1889, the Emperor issued a decree in which, recognising that railways make an essential contribution to the prosperity of the state and to its great power, he ordered construction to begin on a railway between Peking and Hankou (1,500 versts). Reading this news brought to mind a meeting of the Paris Geographical Society at which I happened to be present about a year and a half ago. The speakers were a most varied company: French geographers and Egyptologists, Dutch and Portuguese travellers, a central African Black man in a snow-white clergyman’s cravat, and a learned Italian monk in secular dress. The French paid compliments both to themselves and to their guests. The Dutchman and the Portuguese argued bitterly over which of their two nations was the greatest in the world; the ‘reverend’ Black man, declaring that the black race represented the poetic and feminine element in humanity, modestly conceded first place in historical progress to the whites. But the true hero of the evening was neither a white man nor a black man, but a yellow man: China’s military attaché in Paris and a contributor to the Revue des deux mondes, the well-known General Chen Ki-tong. In this whole crowd, whose faces were of different colours but whose European clothes were all of one colour, he alone had kept his national costume. All the more striking, then, was his speech, delivered in the purest Parisian idiom, without the slightest trace of a foreign accent. The speech seemed to contain nothing but witty empty talk; it was accompanied by general, approving laughter and called forth a loud ovation. Like everyone else, I laughed at the yellow general’s witticisms and marvelled at the purity and fluency of his French. Yet at the same time I was deeply struck by the weighty meaning concealed beneath this apparently frivolous chatter. Before me stood a representative of an alien, hostile world that was advancing upon us more and more. Unintentionally, and perhaps without his own awareness, his words expressed an entire creed that he shared with a mass of four hundred million people.

[¶1] ‘We are willing and able to take from you everything we need, all the techniques of your intellectual and material culture; but we shall adopt none of your beliefs, none of your ideas, not even any of your tastes. We love only ourselves and respect only strength. We have no doubts about our strength: it is more enduring than yours. You exhaust yourselves in ceaseless experiments, while we shall use the fruits of those experiments to strengthen ourselves. We rejoice in your progress, but we have neither the need nor the inclination to take an active part in it: you yourselves are preparing the means that we shall use to subjugate you.’ Such was the meaning of what this Chinese man was saying, and the Europeans greeted him with the same frivolous enthusiasm with which the Jews of the Maccabean age first greeted the Romans. Yet there are intelligent and knowledgeable people in Europe too who watch, attentively and apprehensively, the menacing cloud advancing from the Far East.

[¶2] ‘It may be said without exaggeration,’ writes the well-known Albert Réville, the gifted author of many works on the history of religions, in the first chapter of his latest book, La Religion Chinoise, ‘it may be said without exaggeration that at present there are only two civilisations in the world: ours and the Chinese. Ours is the development, in new forms, of ancient Graeco-Roman culture. From the standpoint of civilisation, present-day America and Australia are merely extensions of Europe. Muslim civilisation, once so brilliant, has been struck by incurable sterility and is gradually surrendering all its possessions to the Europeans. As for India, she sleeps, numbed by her oppressive and voluptuous dream, and is destined to awaken only through the stimulus of her distant western kinsmen. Japan, which owes its civilisation to China, has decisively gone over to ours. There remains Chinese civilisation, with its three or four hundred million representatives, extraordinarily vital, fully alert, and capable through its expansion of arousing our apprehensions.’

[¶3] ‘Certainly, our western Aryan race at present surpasses China in its power of expansion and assimilation. The inferior races that it conquers must submit or disappear. Its spread, especially over the last three centuries, seems something of a miracle; its superior science, the boldness of its genius and its irresistible weapons appear to assure it exclusive possession of the globe in the fairly near future. And so it would be, were it not for China.’

[¶4] ‘Already in British Malacca, in the Dutch Indies and in Australia the number of Chinese settlers increases each year … The movement has spread to California, and in all these regions the Chinese man takes root with all his Chinese ways, his industrious habits, his sobriety, thrift, tenacity in acquiring possessions, his family spirit, his desperate indifference to everything that interests and stirs us, and above all his impermeability to the ideas, customs and way of life of the surrounding population. We are still only at the beginning of this movement, yet in the United States the question is already arising whether the white and yellow races can exist on the same soil …’

[¶5] ‘The Chinese man feels, thinks and reasons differently from us. He has a very high opinion of himself and of his civilisation. In this he resembles us. But although usually courteous and polite, and far more submissive to force than we are, he deeply despises us, and in his eyes we are no more than coarse barbarians.’ Réville then points to the well-known fact that European workers cannot withstand competition from Chinese workers, who have fewer demands and greater endurance; and also to the fact that, owing to the extreme uncleanliness of the Chinese and their peculiar notions of hygiene and medicine, Chinese settlements inevitably become centres of epidemics of every kind.

[¶6] But all these dangers of the yellow race’s private and peaceful invasion are negligible in comparison with the impending growth of the Middle Empire’s state and military power as the Chinese adopt all the latest advances in European technology. This adoption, long held back by the nation’s conservative spirit, is now becoming obligatory under the imperial decree mentioned above, which declared not only railways, but by implication all other acquisitions of European culture of a similar kind, useful and necessary for strengthening and developing Chinese power. In the military administration, certain reforms on European lines began several years ago, and Réville is quite wrong to treat the present Chinese army with contempt. There is no doubt that the gunpowder invented by the Chinese themselves is no good; but alas, they are beginning to use European gunpowder. The memory of how a few Anglo-French battalions brought a campaign to an end at a stroke by taking the imperial residence belongs to a past that is gone for ever. In the latest Tonkin war it was no longer battalions but entire French divisions that could not get the better of the Chinese forces, which consisted to a considerable extent of irregular troops. The French consoled themselves by bringing down Mr Ferry and his ministry, while the Chinese, as though frightened by their unfamiliar and unexpected success, hastened to conclude a peace favourable to the defeated. Nevertheless, the fact remains that, with the first, still very incomplete and imperfect introduction of European weaponry into the Chinese army, it is already becoming capable of holding its own against the Europeans. And although this fact again speaks in favour of western culture, which supplies the Chinese too with the means of fighting, it does nothing to diminish the practical danger. Since 1884, moreover, besides reforming its land forces, China has already managed to create for itself a fairly substantial fleet, comprising four squadrons with eighty-six ships (nine of them ironclads), carrying about five hundred guns and more than seven thousand crewmen, as Mr Venyukov reports on the basis of reliable English sources. In any case, Réville himself, although he has no faith in China’s military success, expects nothing good from the future collision of the two cultures.

[¶7] From a Christian standpoint, we are not permitted to see in any people whatsoever, and therefore not in the Chinese either, enemies against whom only violent means should be employed. What may arouse our antipathies and apprehensions is not the Chinese people themselves, with their distinctive character, but only that which separates this people from the rest of humanity, makes their way of life exclusive and, in that exclusiveness, false. European culture’s external victory over China can be lasting and desirable only on condition of an inward overcoming of Chinese ways, that is, of the historical principle on which the restricted and exclusive structure of Chinese life rests. For such an inward overcoming, we must first know China not merely in the details of its historical past and its present everyday life, but in that age-old moral and social foundation which constitutes both its strength and its limitation. We find a very interesting and timely attempt to study China from precisely this most essential standpoint in a recently published work by the Russian sinologist Mr Georgievsky, The Principles of China’s Life.

[¶8] Enthusiasm for an ideal, even a Chinese one, is a beautiful and rare quality in a scholar today. And Mr Georgievsky’s enthusiasm could be dangerous to readers only if this respected scholar were the sole European who knew the Chinese language and writing and had lived in China. But with so many specialists who disagree with one another, we have ample opportunity to establish the objective truth. At present, Russian sinologists and their more numerous western European counterparts are divided into two approximately equal camps: admirers and opponents of Chinese ways. Thus the non-specialist is obliged to rely more on the factual findings of sinology than on sinologists’ conclusions and judgements. The material for the present essay has been supplied by the Chinese sources accessible to me in translations into European languages, together with several recent authoritative works on China. My task is not to describe how the Chinese have lived and now live, but to explain what they live by and what they live for: in a word, to explain the Chinese ideal.

### Section I

[¶10] The principle of paternal authority. – The probable origin of the Chinese nation. – The cult of ancestors. – Ancestors as disposers of marriages.

[¶11] Both private life and the structure of the state, and religion, and the moral world-view of the Chinese – all this has grown and developed out of one common root, out of the family principle, or more precisely out of the absolutism of paternal authority. Thanks to an unshakeable fidelity to this principle, the "hundred-family" clan of the "black-heads", which came down in prehistoric times out of Mongolia along the Yellow River, was able, growing into a nation four hundred million strong, not to lose the character of a single, closely knit and homogeneous family. The whole complex political organisation of present-day China is regarded by the Chinese themselves merely as a concentric extension of paternal authority: the village elder is the father of his village, the district chief the father of his district, the governor the father of his province, and finally the Bogdikhan the father of the whole middle kingdom, of the whole innumerable posterity of the "hundred families".

[¶12] It may be supposed with full probability that the very principle which down to this day determines the whole Chinese order of life was also the primary cause of the emergence of China itself as a distinct nation. In all probability the progenitors of the Chinese people were those Mongols who, first among their fellow tribesmen, passed from the disorderly promiscuity of the sexes and the matriarchy connected with it to permanent marriage and definite family groups, in which the naturally dominant significance belongs to the father. Such an essential change in the order of life must inevitably have produced a hostile separation of the "hundred families" from the rest of the Mongol population, and then their forced emigration. And the easiest way for them to move was along the valley of the Hoang-ho to the south-east, where the Chinese state was founded. Be that as it may, from the most ancient times of which historical reports have reached us down to the present, the unchanging foundation of the Chinese order of life is unconditional patriarchy.

[¶13] "In spite of polygamy," says Réville, "in spite of many causes of dissolution, the Chinese family remains cohesive and solid. Consequently this solidity does not rest here, as in other countries, upon the exclusive and approximately equal union of father and mother. It is founded above all upon the sacred character of paternal authority." The mother enjoys only a reflection of that authority and borrows from the husband her rights over the children. "The generally acknowledged duty of filial obedience, in so far as it relates to the father, attains in China, one may say, an absolute significance".

[¶14] The personality of the son is, as it were, abolished by the personality of the parent throughout the whole time of the latter's life. But even after his death the relation in principle does not change. The father of the family, who possesses full authority over his children, himself acknowledges over himself the plenary authority of the deceased parent, and through him of the whole ascending series of ancestors. The foundation of every virtue and of every order is filial piety, and true filial piety is that which relates not to the living fathers only but to the dead as well. Thus the true Chinaman, at no age and in no position, enjoys personal independence and individual initiative, and can never act of himself, – he only fulfils the will of his ancestors; he always and in everything depends upon his ancestral past. By this past, in the Chinese conception, there is wholly determined also the most important event of human life, the very condition of its future. "Marriage," it is said in the Li-chi, "is contracted in order that a man may be able rightly to serve the departed ancestors and continue his race". If the aim of marriage generally relates to the ancestors, then in each individual case of marriage the chief role must belong to the ancestors of bridegroom and bride. And so it still is, as may be seen from the ordinary wedding ritual of the Chinese.

[¶15] The ceremony of contracting marriage consists of two main parts: match-making (na-tsai) and the sending of gifts (na-pi); and both relate properly to the ancestors. Na-tsai is performed in this manner. The father of the bridegroom, accompanied by his whole household, betakes himself to the domestic temple of the ancestors, carrying on a platter a letter to the father of the bride, which is laid upon the sacrificial table; he then brings sacrifices to the ancestors with the observance of various ceremonies, brings down the spirits upon these sacrifices by means of incantations and prayers with many genuflexions and bows, and then makes the following report: "On such-and-such a year, month and day, I, a respectful descendant, name stated, venture to bring to the knowledge of my venerable departed great-great-grandsire, name stated (the nearer ancestors up to and including the parents are likewise named), the following: my son, so-and-so, having reached the age of majority and not yet having entered into marriage, is to take to wife the daughter of such-and-such a one; reverently offering you wine and fruits, I respectfully inform you that today the na-tsai and the inquiry concerning the name of the bride are being performed." After the concluding prayer the letter is taken from the sacrificial table and, as approved by the ancestors, is sent with a messenger to the father of the bride, who with similar ceremonies reports it to his own ancestors and sends a reply, which is again reported to the ancestors of the bridegroom, of whom there is then inquired by means of divination the auspicious day for the celebration of the marriage. In the second ceremony, na-pi, the gifts sent by the father of the bridegroom to the father of the bride are presented to the ancestors of the former before dispatch and to the ancestors of the latter on receipt, with special reports and prayers. With the same reports and prayers there is accompanied also the final consent of the father of the bride to the conclusion of the marriage on the appointed day.

[¶16] "As regards na-tsai," says Mr Georgievsky, "its meaning is perfectly clear: since it is the ancestors of the bridegroom who are interested in the marriage, it is they who conduct the business negotiations with the ancestors of the bride, while the parents of the contracting parties play the role only of intermediaries, and the future spouses play no role at all – their business is to carry out holily what shall be commanded by the ancestors. But what then does na-pi mean? Why is the sending of gifts clothed in such solemnity and announced in the domestic temples? And why, indeed, are gifts sent at all? The answer to these questions will follow of itself if we take into consideration both the aim of marriage and the attitude towards it of the two families. The ancestors of the bridegroom, with a view to securing their own posthumous well-being, desire that their race should not die out and that their descendants living upon the earth should have children; for the ancestors, consequently, it is very important to obtain for the bridegroom a bride from another clan. The ancestors of the bride reason differently; what profit is it to them if their great-granddaughter becomes the wife of a man of another family-name? For they will lose in her a servant, and that is all; having suffered a certain loss in offerings, they will have to diminish their contentment beyond the grave. The chances, then, are unequal: one set of ancestors gains, and gains a great deal, the other loses. In order that the advantage of one side should not entail losses for the other, it is necessary to compensate that other side with such a quantity of useful objects as it loses in letting the maiden out of its house. It is clear that in the most ancient times brides were acquired in no other way than by purchase, and since the owners of every kind of property were considered to be first of all the ancestors of the families, it was they who carried on the bargaining among themselves: the ancestors of the bridegroom acquired the maiden, the ancestors of the bride received useful objects as her price. In this consists the original meaning of the sending of gifts".

[¶17] This view is confirmed, among other things, by the ceremony by which the newly wedded woman, on the third day after the marriage, is personally handed over to the charge of her new ancestors, that is, the ancestors of her husband. The whole family assembles in the domestic temple of the ancestors before the tablets bearing their names, and after the customary ceremonies and sacrifices all kneel down, and the master of the house pronounces the following prayerful report: "My own son, name stated, has on such-and-such a day entered into lawful marriage, – and his young wife, name stated, I venture hereby to present to the view of the ancestors. I reverently beseech you to turn upon her a gracious attention and to bless her with happiness and length of days, to preserve her (new) home and kinsfolk and to gladden her with the sight of a most numerous offspring. Whereof I humbly make report".

[¶19] Sacrifices to ancestors. – Cannibalism and human sacrifices in China.

[¶20] The unconditional power of the past over the present and the future, the dominion of the dead over the living, is expressed most manifestly in those sacrifices by which posterity buys from the ancestors the right to exist. The cult of ancestors, which was once a fundamental element in the religion and life of all peoples, has in China alone preserved down to this day its predominant religious and social significance. Naturally, for modern educated Chinese, with all their respect for this cult, it has become, generally speaking, merely a pious fiction, a symbolic expression of general ideas concerning the dependence of the present upon the past, the unconditional obligatoriness of filial piety, which is not abolished even by death, and the sanctity of tradition and of things ancient. On such a view the sacrifices to ancestors themselves are a courteous remembrance of them and at the same time the performance of an ancient rite which sanctifies and spiritualises the family union. Such was not the original character of this cult. In China, as everywhere, the primeval sacrifices were predominantly human sacrifices: the dead devoured the living. "It is necessary to take into consideration," says Mr Georgievsky, "that in China cannibalism is still not infrequently practised: when a man kills his enemy, on the field of battle or in a private quarrel, he opens up the corpse, takes out the heart and the liver and devours them; this is done, on the one hand, for the acquisition of greater courage, and on the other, for the satisfaction of the feeling of hostility. (In the famous Chinese novels San-kochzhi and Shchui-khu-Chzhuan, as also in the drama Chzhao-li-zhan-fei, there are not a few indications that in China there have been lovers of feasting on human flesh not only in time of war but in time of peace as well.) If living men behave thus towards their slain enemies, the departed behave no differently in regard to the latter, – they too are not averse to regaling themselves upon heart and liver. To sacrifice to the departed at the grave the heart of his slain enemy is considered proper not only by common folk but sometimes even by the government itself: under the emperor Chia-ch'ing, in the eighteenth year of the present century already, it happened that an official was poisoned by three of his servants; when the crime came to light, the emperor ordered the murderers to be brought to the grave of the deceased and hewn in pieces, and the heart to be taken out and offered to the dead man as a special sacrifice".

[¶21] But the offering to the dead man of his enemy or his murderer in sacrifice is an exceptional case. There is no doubt that in China, as everywhere, there were human sacrifices of a more general and constant character. Above all, the true head of the family who survived the death of his parent could in no better way express his pious devotion to the representative of the ancestral past than by sacrificing to him the representative of the ancestral future – his eldest son, provided only there was another son to whom the succession in the family's service of the ancestors could pass. Direct historical testimonies to the existence in China of the custom of sacrificing first-born children have not reached us, but apart from the correspondence with the religions of other peoples there are in the field of sinology indirect indications of such a custom; thus, for example, the eldest son has been given by the Chinese the name chzhun-tszy, which means "son of the grave". Mr Georgievsky adduces yet another highly curious indirect testimony concerning the offering in sacrifice, if not of the first-born, then generally of someone of the younger generation of the family, of the grandchildren of the deceased, although in this case the worthy sinologist does not point out and apparently does not notice the original meaning of the data he reports. "The conviction, still widely prevalent in China," says Mr Georgievsky, "that the soul of a dead man can enter into the body of a living one, fully explains to us that form of the cult of ancestors which is considered the most ancient for positive Chinese history. Whenever in the mho it was proper to bring sacrifices and to worship the spirit of a departed ancestor, one of his kinsmen (usually a grandson, or, failing him, another member of the family) arrayed himself in the ceremonial garments of the deceased, appeared as his representative and acted in his name. This representative of the dead man was called [——], which means properly corpse, dead man." – "It must not be thought in this connection," adds Mr Georgievsky, "that the shi, having clothed himself in the garments of the deceased, served only to remind the living members of the family of their dead parent, grandfather, great-grandfather and so on. – No: when he ate, drank, delighted himself with the sounds of music or with dances, everyone was convinced that all this was done not by the shi but by the spirit of the departed which had entered into him, – here there was no place for any allegorism; on the contrary, there was the most complete reality". Subsequently, instead of a living man, wooden statues, silk dolls, and finally straw effigies and paper images came to serve for the ritual embodiment of the ancestor. But why should these substitutions have been needed if the embodiment of the ancestor in the descendant was, as Mr Georgievsky supposes, merely temporary and for the shi himself entirely harmless? Why did so conservative and pious a people as the Chinese renounce this innocent but expressive form of the cult and replace it with others less serious? But if we recall the corresponding facts in other religious countries, for example in Mexico, it will become clear that the identification of a higher being with one of its worshippers is by no means a harmless spiritualistic phenomenon. Evidently the ancestor entered into the descendant he favoured not in order to abandon him, but in order to take him with him into the other world, that is, in other words, he was a victim doomed to the spirit he represented, and that is why he was called beforehand "corpse" or "dead man". And afterwards, when, with the development of civilisation and thanks to the action of a whole series of moral philosophers, manners had been so far softened that human sacrifices as a constant form of the cult became impossible, the Chinese necessarily had recourse to various substitutions, and instead of living men began to place soulless objects at the disposal of the ancestors.

[¶22] Nevertheless, the offering in sacrifice to the dead of such human beings as have no independent significance in family and social life, such as widows and servants, persisted in China until a very late time, for which there are direct and positive historical indications. The custom of burying wives alive with their dead husbands undoubtedly existed in China at an epoch not very remote. With the emperor of the 4th dynasty, Ch'in-shih-huang-ti (209 B.C.), all his wives who had no children were buried. He built himself an enormous vault in Mount Li, 720,000 workmen labouring for 37 years; this vault was lit by inextinguishable lamps, in which the burning was maintained by human fat. If the emperors of the 5th (the first Han) dynasty (which came to an end at the beginning of our era) did not follow the example of Ch'in-shih-huang-ti, nevertheless, in satisfying the immemorial requirements, albeit softened in form, they established the rule by which the childless wives of the head of the empire were, upon his death, to move out of the harem to live within the bounds of the enclosure surrounding the tomb of their sovereign. As for the wives of commoners, in China they very often, without any outside prompting, agree voluntarily to end their lives and to be buried with their departed husbands. The biographies of such wives, who bear the name li-fu, that is, the valiant, are numerous in Chinese literature. Only in the last century, in 1729, was an imperial decree issued declaring that to such voluntary martyrs no special honours would henceforth be rendered.

[¶23] If the departed had had servants in his lifetime, then they too, according to the sense of the most ancient views, must follow their master into the grave … With the Ch'in prince Wu-kung (660 B.C.) 66 persons were buried, and with Mu-kung (620 B.C.), a prince of the same domain, 177 persons. When the coffin of the (above-mentioned) emperor Ch'in-shih-huang-ti was placed in the burial chamber, all the craftsmen who were finishing the construction of the tomb were driven into it and walled up. When the T'ang emperor Li-shih-min died (in 650 A.D.), 14 Tatar princes who were at the court expressed the wish to be buried with their departed sovereign … When the beloved wife of the emperor Shun-chih (1644–1672 A.D.) died, he ordered 30 persons to be killed at her grave. This last piece of information shows that compulsory human sacrifices, though unconditionally abolished for the whole of China in 972 A.D., nevertheless continued to exist down to the seventeenth century; and in the opinion of some they survive to the present day. Thus de Groot, the author of one of the most authoritative recent works on China, asserts that the dynasty now reigning continues to adhere to the custom, upon the death of each of its members, of putting to death a certain number of people so that they may serve the deceased. He likewise reports the curious fact that during the Anglo-French expedition of 1860 a Manchu military commander, dangerously wounded at Palikao, ordered the captured French missionary and English officer to be beheaded, so as to enjoy their company in the next world.

[¶0] Ancestors and "Heaven". – The "hundred spirits". – The meaning and composition of the Chinese "Heaven". – Spirits conferred.

[¶1] The custom, not wholly extinct even now, of sacrificing one physically alive on behalf of the dead is merely the strongest and most concrete expression of that universal worship of the past upon which the whole Chinese order rests. This cult of the past conditions above all the unity and the solidity of the Chinese family. The sole authority of the living father could not preserve its absolute significance if it had not a point of support independent of the given person and inaccessible to death. As the temporary viceregent of the ancestors who have passed into eternity, as their priest and mediator between them and the living members of the family, the father is the bearer of a higher religious principle which imparts to his actual power a sacred authority. Transferring the centre of its gravity into the past, into the region of absolute fact, unchanging and immovable, the Chinese family itself acquired the solidity of an unshakeable fact, over which time has no power.

[¶2] Possessing in China an extraordinary intensity, the religious and familial principle has displayed here also a great power of extensiveness, having seized upon and determined the entire political order of the most populous and the most long-lived state in the world. That the Chinese power, with all its complex bureaucratic administration, invariably preserves the patriarchal character which belongs to other states only in certain historical epochs – this is a universally known fact. But at first sight it may seem that the religious foundation of this state patriarchy is quite other than that of the private family. The head of the family is a priest in the cult of the ancestors; as the son of his dead fathers he is the mediator between them and his household. The emperor is a priest in the cult of Heaven; as the Son of Heaven upon earth he is the mediator of Heaven and earth. But what is Heaven according to Chinese notions? First of all one must distinguish the idea of Heaven in the systems of the Chinese philosophers from the representation of Heaven in the positive religion of China. According to the teaching of Chinese philosophy in both its principal schools (the Taoist and the Confucian), Heaven and earth are the first correlative realisations of the two fundamental forces into which the single unconditional potentiality of nature – the tao – divides itself; of these forces one, as is well known, is the active or male – yang, and the other the passive or female – yin; Heaven is the primeval realisation or embodiment of yang, and earth the same realisation of yin. If the concept of the pure potentiality of being, dividing itself polarically in its cosmic manifestation, belongs to the domain of philosophical speculation and not of popular belief, then, naturally, the definition of Heaven as the first realisation of one of these metaphysical poles of all that exists can likewise say nothing to the positive religious consciousness of the people. On the other hand, there is decidedly no ground whatever for identifying the "Heaven" of Chinese religion with the "personal creator" of Western deism, as certain recent sinologists do after the fashion of the old missionaries. The question of the true meaning of this fundamental religious idea of the Chinese would probably be resolved very easily if the sacred books of China had come down to us in their original form, and not in that purified redaction which Confucius gave them, wishing to bring the popular beliefs up to the level of his own moral and political teaching. But since this teaching was, as we shall see further on, a rationalism in form only, being in its essence determined by the aims of a national and state conservatism, it could, though it cloaked the primeval meaning of the popular faith beneath more ideal and more abstract representations, by no means abolish that meaning without trace. And indeed we find indications of this primeval meaning not only in the sacred or canonical Pentateuch, which preserves in a renovated form the most ancient monuments of Chinese letters, but also in the classical Four Books, which contain the teaching of Confucius himself and of his principal follower Mencius. These latter indications are more important for us than the former, as having significance for contemporary China as well. In the conversations of Mencius (the last of the four classical books) there is one passage which in my view is of decisive significance. For greater clarity I shall cite it in connection with the preceding context.

[¶3] "Wên-chang said: Is it true that the sovereign Yao gave the sovereignty to Shun?

[¶4] Mencius said: By no means. The Son of Heaven cannot give the sovereignty to anyone.

[¶5] Wên-chang said: Good. But since Shun possessed the sovereignty, who gave it to him?

[¶6] Mencius said: Heaven gave it.

[¶7] Wên-chang continued: If Heaven gave it, was it not through clear words?

[¶8] Mencius objected: By no means. Heaven does not talk; it announces its will by events and by deeds – that is all.

[¶9] Wên-chang added: How does it announce its will by events and by deeds?

[¶10] Mencius said: The Son of Heaven can only propose a man to Heaven, he cannot command that Heaven should give that man the sovereignty. The imperial vassals can propose a man to the Son of Heaven, they cannot command that the Son of Heaven should give him the rank of a vassal prince. The governor of a city can propose a man to a vassal prince, he cannot command that the vassal prince should give him the dignity of governor.

[¶11] Formerly Yao proposed Shun to Heaven, and Heaven received him; he showed him to the people covered with glory, and the people received him. That is why I said: Heaven does not talk; it announces its will in the events and in the deeds of man – that is all.

[¶12] Wên-chang said: Allow me one more question. What do you understand by the words: he proposed him to Heaven, and Heaven received him; he showed him to the people covered with glory, and the people received him?

[¶13] Mencius said: He commanded him to minister at the sovereign sacrifice, and the hundred spirits approved his sacrifice: that is the consent of Heaven. He commanded him to administer the affairs of state, and since he administered them well, the "hundred families" became calm and contented; that is the consent of the people".

[¶14] Thus the approval of someone by Heaven means that the hundred spirits approve him by accepting his public sacrifice. In the text adduced these two notions – Heaven and the hundred spirits – are acknowledged to be unconditionally equipollent, they are directly identified. Just as the term "hundred families" (pê-sing) is merely another name for the Chinese people, so likewise the term "hundred spirits" (pê-shin) is merely another name for Heaven. But whence came this term, and what exactly is one to understand by it?

[¶15] It is known that peoples in their infancy, like small children, cannot have a distinct notion of large numbers. Some stop in their counting at three, others at five, at ten, and so on. The particular significance attached to the word hundred (pê) in the Chinese language can be explained only by the fact that, when the progenitors of the present Chinese separated from the Mongol tribe as a distinct nation, they could count only up to a hundred. A hundred was for them the extreme, final and perfect number; it was equipollent to the notion all, that is, the complete totality of objects of a given kind. Thus, instead of saying the people, they said the hundred families, that is, all the families of which the people consists; and here, naturally, regarding themselves as the people par excellence, they applied this name only to themselves and made of it their own proper national name. As "the hundred families" means all the families, or the whole people, so likewise "the hundred spirits" means all the spirits taken together, the whole spiritual world. And if it is evident from the text quoted above that Heaven and the hundred spirits are one and the same, then, consequently, by the Heaven of Chinese religion one must understand nothing other than the totality or fullness of all spiritual superhuman beings.

[¶16] In the same classical Chinese book (not in it alone, of course) we find a direct indication also of how the Chinese people conceived of its actual relation to Heaven. "When Heaven brought forth this people, it wished that those who first knew the rules of action, or moral duties, should teach this to the others".

[¶17] The Chinese people is an offspring, a son of Heaven. The hundred families stand to the hundred spirits as each individual family stands to the ancestors who begot it. The spirits are universal ancestors, just as the ancestors are familial spirits. And as each family is linked to its invisible principle through one visible centre – in the person of the father-householder, who is par excellence the son of his departed fathers, the representative of the family unity, the priest and servant of the ancestors – so likewise "the hundred families", the whole Chinese nation, for its constant and visible link (as a single whole) with the cause of its being and the source of right life, concentrates itself in the person of one supreme sovereign and common father; he it is who is the son of Heaven, par excellence the priest and servant of the "hundred spirits". He unites with Heaven the whole national and state whole just as the private householder unites his family with the ancestors.

[¶18] The correspondence between the family cult of the ancestors and the sovereign's cult of Heaven is complete. But it is only a correspondence. It remains still to learn: what are these "hundred spirits", or all the spirits constituting Heaven, in themselves? Do they stand in some real relation, and if they do, in what exactly, to the progenitors of private families, to the souls of deceased ancestors?

[¶19] First of all it would be mistaken to draw from the identity of the notions of Heaven and the "hundred spirits" the conclusion that the cult of Heaven embraces only those spirits which have some relation to the phenomena of the visible heaven, for example the spirits of the planets, of the constellations and the like. If Heaven and earth are sharply distinguished from each other in sense-perception and directly opposed to each other in the Chinese philosopheme of yang and yin, this can by no means be extended to the domain of the positive religion of the Chinese. Here Heaven includes within itself all the spirits, and consequently not the sidereal and atmospheric ones alone, but also the spirits of the terrestrial elements, of waters, mountains, forests, as well as the spirits who are patrons of provinces, cities, professions and virtues. The Chinese pantheon, in the abundance and the universality of its members, is hardly inferior to the Greco-Roman. Whence, then, is the actual composition of this whole host recruited?

[¶20] The well-known theory, put forward in antiquity by Euhemerus and developed in modern times by Herbert Spencer in his sociology, asserts that all gods are dead men. In so unconditional a form this theory does not withstand criticism, but the share of truth contained in it is applicable to Chinese religion far more than to any other. At first sight it may even seem that the Chinese Heaven cannot be anything other than the sum of the Chinese ancestors. Indeed, as the whole people in its real composition is merely an assemblage of individual families, so, one would think, the father of this people – Heaven – must really be made up of all the individual ancestors. But such a conclusion would be too hasty. The cult of Heaven has a wholly national and state character. It is to Heaven, publicly, in the person of the emperor, that the Chinese people worships as a single cultural and political whole; only in this latter sense is Heaven the father of the Chinese people. Therefore there is no ground whatever for including in the object of this cult such ancestors as had only a private significance for their families, but did nothing special and distinguished themselves in no way in the sphere of the common national and state life. And in fact, although by means of a governmental act called fyn-shen (the conferring of a spirit) the Chinese pantheon is constantly being replenished with deceased Chinese, it is not with all of them but only with chosen ones. It is usually for exemplary services in some domain of national life, and especially in the domain of the state, that the dead are deemed worthy of admission to the composition of the heavenly father of the fatherland, or to the assembly of the spirits; while in certain rarer cases canonisation takes place in consequence of posthumous apparitions and signs which have attracted public attention and have revealed in the deceased an extraordinary dignity.

[¶21] The spirits or gods who have been conferred with this rank out of simple mortals are a great multitude, and they belong to the most various epochs. The reader who has noticed the above-quoted conversation between Mencius and Wên-chang will probably be very surprised to learn that the modest interlocutor of the famous philosopher, who lived about 400 B.C. and spent his life in discussions, is none other than the god of all learning, Wên-chang-ti, the patron of scholars and students, greatly revered by all Chinese and possessing in Canton one of the most remarkable temples of the whole Middle Kingdom.

[¶22] General Kuan-goy, who lived in the third century B.C., was conferred as the god of war Kuan-ti in 1594 A.D. The generals Ch'in-Tsiung and Yü-Gzhi-Kung, who lived in the seventh century A.D., were conferred as gods for successfully guarding the palace against devils. The minister Kai-Lushen (who lived in the tenth century A.D.), for the promptitude displayed at the funeral of an empress, was raised after death to be the "spirit who opens the way", or the "spirit who destroys the dangers of the way". Finally, one Chinese woman went straight into the ranks of the queens of heaven – T'ien-hou. She was a native of the province of Fu-chien and in her lifetime was distinguished by nothing. When she died, her kinsmen declared that her spirit visited their house; concluding from this that the deceased had become a goddess, they erected a temple to her. The new goddess very soon became popular, and in the Fu-chien annals many cases are recounted in which she appeared as the saviour of those drowning at sea during a storm. The title of queen of heaven was formally confirmed to the goddess by the emperor Dvo-Guan.

[¶23] To such subjects as positive popular religion, the requirements of strict consistency, systematicity and definiteness are least of all applicable. With this reservation it may be boldly asserted that in general the Heaven of Chinese religion, in its real composition, is the assembly of deceased Chinese who by their particular qualities or services contributed to the formation and development of China as a national and political whole, who begot it in that sense, wherefore Heaven is also the father of the Chinese people.

[¶0] The identity of spiritual and temporal authority in China. – Theocracy of primordial indistinction. – Officials as priests, rulers and teachers.

[¶1] Being merely an extension and generalisation of the family's paternal authority, the supreme state authority in China has in its essence a priestly or sacerdotal character. As the private father of a family is first of all a priest in the cult of the ancestors, so the lord of the all-Chinese family is chiefly the supreme priest and high priest in the cult of Heaven or of the "hundred spirits". As paternal authority is regarded in popular belief as the authority of the ancestors, communion with whom is maintained by sacrifices and divinations, so likewise the supreme state authority is merely a consequence and an appurtenance of the high-priestly function of the emperor, who acts by the same means – sacrifices and divinations – as the instrument of Heaven and, most immediately, of his own deified ancestors, that is, of famous ancient and modern emperors deemed worthy of admission to the assembly of the "hundred spirits" – the representatives of the all-state past of China. "That China has always been governed, and is still governed, by the supposed will of departed sovereigns, admits not the slightest doubt". It is intelligible that such significance belonged to the departed sovereigns not as individual persons, but as those who enter into the composition of "Heaven", as pre-eminent members in the assembly of the "hundred spirits".

[¶2] If the social and political order of the Chinese, wholly determined by a religious principle, is undoubtedly a theocracy, it would nevertheless be inexact to call it, as Réville did, a secular theocracy or a theocratic laicism. It would be unjust to reproach the Chinese monarchy with so-called caesaropapism. Such terms as secular theocracy and caesaropapism express an abnormal union of two distinct authorities with a more or less complete subordination or absorption of one of them by the other. But to China the very notion of two distinct spheres of authority, spiritual and temporal, has always been and still remains alien. Here there can be neither a normal nor an abnormal relation between these two authorities, because they do not exist as distinct ones in any sense or in any degree. The high-priestly authority, according to Chinese notions, is the proper and sole foundation of state authority. Confucius, describing how the ancient sovereigns Wu-wang and Cheu-kung assiduously served and brought sacrifices to Heaven and the ancestors, concludes his account with the following general proposition: "He who shall be perfectly instructed in the rites of sacrifice to Heaven and earth, and who shall fully understand the meaning of the great five-yearly sacrifice called Ti and of the great autumn sacrifice called Chang, will govern the kingdom as easily as if he were looking upon the palm of his hand".

[¶3] The sovereign is rex only by virtue of being rex sacrorum. We meet here with pure, original sole authority, the theocracy of primordial indistinction. The sovereign is the sole mediator between Heaven and men, the sole ruler and viceregent of Heaven upon earth. "The sovereign," it is said in the sacred book the Shu-king, "takes the place of Heaven, in order to govern men and teach them and be for them an example."

[¶4] As high priest and king are unconditionally identical in the person of the son of Heaven, so in all the subordinate organs of his authority the functions of spiritual and temporal government coincide without any distinction whatever. Official China has never known and does not know any other clergy than the officialdom. Every superior, high or low, is eo ipso also the religious head of the people within the limits of his jurisdiction. And as the son of Heaven, combining in himself the whole fullness of authority, is not only the supreme priest and ruler but also the teacher of the people, – so all officials besides their priestly and judicial-administrative duties are further ex officio popular teachers and preachers. Already from ancient times the heads of communities (Tso, consisting of 100 families), the heads of cantons (Tang – of 500 families) and the heads of districts (Cheu – of 2,500 families) were obliged on appointed days to assemble the people under their charge, in order, after the prescribed sacrifices, to deliver to them moral instruction and rebuke, and also to inquire of them concerning their needs and in every way to display their fatherly solicitude for them. Higher dignitaries instruct in a similar manner the officials subordinate to them and transmit to them the precepts received from the supreme government.

[¶5] Thanks to the absolutely patriarchal principle of the Chinese order, every superior, from the son of Heaven down to the last village elder, possesses within his borders the undivided fullness of paternal authority and, consequently, being in the full sense a father to those under him, is for them thereby at once priest, ruler and teacher.

[¶1] We have seen that the religious principle of family life and of the state order in China is one and the same: the cult of the past, the deification of the dead. Just as the private family worships its own past in the person of its domestic ancestors, so the all-Chinese family of the Middle Kingdom deifies its national and state past in the cult of Heaven or of the "hundred spirits". The natural mediator between this deified past and present life is, in the family, the father – as the person nearest to the dead, as the first among the living to be a candidate for the ancestors; and just such a mediator between the national and state past and the present is naturally the sovereign – as the common father of the all-Chinese family, as the only person standing in a direct and immediate relation to Heaven – the Son of Heaven par excellence.

[¶2] "Just as the master of a house reports to the ancestors on the affairs of his household, so likewise do sovereigns report to their ancestors not only on family occurrences, but also on the circumstances of the government of the empire. In ancient times the emperors undertook absolutely nothing of any importance without previously informing the ancestors: whether they set out to survey the empire, whether they held a diet of appanage princes, whether they went hunting, and so forth, they always notified their departed ancestors of it".

[¶3] "If a sovereign," says Wu-tzu, "has to undertake an important matter, he must first betake himself to the temple of his ancestors in order to notify them of what he intends to do, he must have recourse to divinations and see whether the heavenly signs are favourable; if everything portends a prosperous outcome of the matter, the sovereign may boldly undertake it".

[¶4] "Reports to the ancestors are not an empty formality, and not all of them are founded upon some sort of allegorism: living men, in bringing this or that circumstance to the knowledge of the departed, desire to know their will, desire to receive from them counsel and a guiding instruction". This they attain by means of divinations and various magical methods. Thus, receiving in good time reports of all that happens in the family and revealing their binding will, the departed ancestors are the true rulers of their descendants living upon the earth and of the whole people.

[¶5] But if the past, in the person of the deceased ancestors and through their representatives – the fathers of families and the father of the state – really governs the actual life of men; if the ancestors by individual acts of their will decide particular questions of family and state life, then the general order and direction of this life likewise receive their norms and ideals from that same past, from those same ancestors, as bearers of ancient wisdom, as the founders of tradition. The father of the state with his learned officials, and the fathers of families, are not only priests and rulers but also teachers; and their teaching is not their own personal invention, but the primordial traditional wisdom coming from the ancestors, from the sages of antiquity. The ideals of the Chinaman belong wholly to the past, he looks backwards and not forwards, and if, like Confucius, he busies himself about reforms, those reforms present themselves to him merely as the removal of pernicious innovations, as the most complete return to the olden time.

[¶6] But this very conservatism, this exclusive predilection for the traditional foundations of life, served China as the starting-point for the development of a speculative thought wholly Chinese in its essential character, yet at the same time representing such a self-absorption of the national spirit that in it all practical motives of life are finally lost, and all human relations merge in a primordial indistinction. Chineseness, like every limited principle, if absolute significance be given it, leads to absurdity and destroys itself. This reduction to absurdity was accomplished for the Chinese principle in the doctrine of the greatest and perhaps the only speculative philosopher of the yellow race – Lao-tzu.

[¶7] As a speculative philosopher, Lao-tzu seeks an absolute principle; as a true Chinaman, he seeks it exclusively in the past – he seeks, consequently, an unconditional past, such a one as precedes all that exists. Neither the object of the private cult – the deceased ancestors of the family – nor the object of the state cult – Heaven, or the hundred spirits – can satisfy such an absolute requirement: both the ancestors and Heaven represent only a relative past, they themselves have originated, they have something preceding them behind them. But what is required is that which precedes everything, itself having nothing preceding it. Such an absolute presupposition of every actual and determinate being is pure possibility, or the indeterminate potentiality of being, which in itself is equal to non-being.

[¶8] "All things in the world," says Lao-tzu, "were born of being, but being itself was born of non-being".

[¶9] This negative force of all that exists Lao-tzu calls the tao, which in its most immediate sense means way. Since everything proceeds from non-being and everything returns into it again, it is the common way of all that exists. "Resolution into non-being – that is the movement of the tao, impotence – that is the action of the tao", the tao is emptiness. You look at it and do not see it: it is called colourless. You listen to it and do not hear it: it is called soundless. You touch it and do not reach it: it is called bodiless. The first unconditional principle of all that exists has in itself no positive determination or name whatsoever, it is the unsaid or the unutterable. With a name, as the pure potentiality of being, or the way which all that exists traverses, the tao is the common mother of all things and beings and the "mysterious female" (in the translation of Stanislas Julien – la femelle mysterieuse ).

[¶10] Whatever the absolute principle of all that exists is, such likewise is the final practical ideal for man. Understanding the tao as the absence of actual being, Lao-tzu consistently asserts that for us too non-being is truly preferable to being. "He," says he, "who does not concern himself with living is wiser than he who prizes life". If the tao is empty and inactive, if it, in Lao-tzu's expression, "constantly exercises itself in inaction", then in this same consists the ideal of the sage. "The only thing I fear," says Lao-tzu, "is to be active". "The man who knows the tao does not speak; he who speaks does not know the tao. The man who knows the tao shuts his lips, he closes his ears and eyes, he suppresses his activity, he renounces all ties, he tempers his light, he likens himself to idiots: then one may say that he resembles the tao; he is inaccessible to favour and to disfavour, to gain and to loss, to honour and to dishonour, and that is why he is the most honoured man in the whole universe". "He who has attained to the summit of emptiness firmly preserves his peace". As the tao "constantly exercises itself in inaction, so the holy man makes inaction his occupation, his instructions consist in silence". "For the silent man attains to inaction". And inaction is the true goal of the sage, who knows that "the absence of desires procures peace", while every quality and every action cause suffering and harm.

[¶11] "The tao is something indeterminate and confused", and therefore the holy man too, who likens himself to the tao, can have no constant and unchanging convictions – he holds to the wavering opinions of the crowd. He enters into no struggle whatever. And indeed, why should he struggle against anyone or anything, when he ought to have no determinate opinions and not even feelings. "Heaven and earth have no particular predilection or liking for anything whatsoever; they look upon all creatures as upon a straw dummy, the holy man relates himself to everything in no other way".

[¶12] But if for the true sage, according to Lao-tzu, both the life of the heart and practical activity, towards which he can have no impulses whatsoever, are closed, then the theoretical domain is taken from him in exactly the same way – the activity of the mind. The Chinese philosopher is wholly consistent in this. If the true principle of everything is absolute indistinction, then for uniting or conforming oneself with such a principle the path of thought and knowledge is least of all suitable; for these activities consist precisely in emerging from primordial indistinction, in affirming certain determinations and distinctions. The state of the thinking and knowing mind is the direct opposite of the state of the tao. "He who knows the tao," says Lao-tzu, "cannot be a scholar, and he who is a scholar does not know the tao. – If a man rids himself of the light of the mind, he can become free from all impotence. – Renounce learning, and you will be rid of sorrow".

[¶13] Enmity against reason and science is characteristic of many mystical thinkers. But with Lao-tzu, as a true Chinaman, this principled obscurantism has a peculiar character and a special significance. Giving himself up to the most extreme abstractions, he nevertheless feels himself a member of the "hundred families" and does not cease to think of the practical interest of his people. In denying reason and science he has in view not only the plunging of the personal spirit into the absolute indistinction of the tao – no, he recommends simple ignorance to the whole people as the true social ideal. He asserts in the most decided manner that enlightenment brings men nothing but harm, and that the good government of a kingdom must be founded exclusively upon the ignorance of the people. "The wise and holy man constantly and in every way concerns himself with making the people wholly ignorant and devoid of desires. He takes care that knowing men shall not dare to act, he applies inaction to everything, and then everything is governed in the best possible manner".

[¶14] "If you," Lao-tzu addresses himself to statesmen, "if you renounce wisdom and cast away prudence, the people will become a hundred times happier; if you renounce humaneness and cast away justice, the people will return to filial piety and to parental love; if you renounce skill and cast away acquisition, thieves and robbers will disappear from among the people. If I governed the people, I would make it return to the use of knotted cords. If my people lived so close to another people that the crowing of cocks and the barking of dogs could be heard between them, even then not one man of my people would wish to cross the border and visit the neighbours".

[¶15] This striving after primordial simplicity is bound up with the all-Chinese cult of the past, and this cult itself is founded, for Lao-tzu, upon the thought of primordial indistinction. "The realm of the tao," says he, "is in the past. Only by observing the tao of ancient times can one govern the existences of the present".

[¶16] Every emergence from primordial simplicity and emptiness, every complication of forms and determination of relations, is a falling away from the tao and can lead only to the worse. Thought and knowledge are evil, for by them desires and sorrows are multiplied. Evil are the laws, for the more laws there are, the more thieves. Evil, finally, is morality itself, for it is merely a transition from blessed indistinction to violence and offence. "When men lost the tao, they acquired virtue; having lost virtue, they acquired humaneness; having lost humaneness, they acquired justice; having lost justice, they acquired politeness; losing politeness, they acquire violence".

[¶17] Thus, having theoretically deepened the Chinese cult of the past, having dug down, so to speak, by the great power of his personal mind to the ultimate foundations of the national world-view, and having laid bare these foundations from various extraneous and accidental accretions, Lao-tzu thereby discovered the radical and essential untenability of this Chinese conservatism and traditionalism. Absolute emptiness, or indistinction, as a speculative principle, and the negation of life, knowledge and progress, as the necessary practical conclusion – such is the essence of Chineseness raised to an exclusive and consistent system. Giving all rights to the past alone, it contains a principled negation of the present and the future in humanity.

[¶18] The teaching of Lao-tzu, who attempted to raise Chineseness to the level of an absolute principle, does not require refutation: it destroys itself by the obvious impossibility of fulfilling its demands. First of all, Lao-tzu himself could not fulfil them. He denied the "light of the mind", being himself a profound and subtle thinker. He considered learning to be the root of evil, and he had disciples, he founded a whole philosophical school. He dreamed of the return of the "knotted cords" and nevertheless took care to perpetuate his thoughts in a book by means of more perfect methods of writing. This contradiction between word and deed in the teacher would not, of course, as yet constitute a decisive argument against the teaching. But the demands of the Tao-te-king, unfulfilled by Lao-tzu himself, were unfulfillable in general. In the first place, if the people has already emerged from the state of primordial simplicity, that happened from certain natural causes which cannot be removed by the preaching of obscurantism alone: to demand of a people that it renounce civilisation and return to barbarism is the same as to demand of an oak that it become an acorn again. And in the second place, apart from its real impracticability, such a demand is also logically unsound; let us grant that a people which has attained a certain degree of civilisation is further removed from the tao (that is, from absolute indistinction) than a barbarous people; but this difference is only relative. And not only men who use knotted cords, but even perfect savages are still in a state not corresponding to the tao: they have feelings and desires, they think, act and struggle. The ideal of absolute indistinction consistently requires not only the negation of civilised life, but the abolition of all life. On such an absurd and fantastic demand the prudent people of the Middle Kingdom could not come to rest. A rectilinear and unconditionally consistent carrying through of any principle whatsoever, even of its own Chinese one, is not at all in the spirit

[¶19] of the Chinese. But it would likewise not be in their spirit to renounce their fundamental principle – the cult of the past – for the sake of its inner untruth. When in the philosophy of Lao-tzu the pernicious extreme of Chineseness was laid bare, the genius of this tenacious people demanded a compromise between its own principle and the practical conditions of life. The compromise sought for appeared in the teaching of Confucius, the true representative of Chinese wisdom and Chinese ideals.

[¶1] Uniting in himself the virtues of the sages and saints who preceded him, Confucius, in the words of Mencius, was more capable than any of them of adapting himself to every circumstance. It was precisely such a man that was called to accomplish the necessary compromise between the abstract principle of Chineseness and the practical needs of the national life. His task consisted in restoring the national antiquity in a new, broader, more harmonious and more enlightened form. Ancient religion and the new social and political life he brought into one system of moral and practical order, traditional and conservative in essence, rational in form. To the Chinese cult of the past he imparted a more moral and more reasoned character, establishing it upon the fundamental virtue of filial piety, and this same moral principle he made the cornerstone of the whole social and political structure of the Chinese empire.

[¶2] Although Confucius was a thoroughly typical Chinaman and acted in a purely Chinese spirit, his work could not but meet with resistance. It came from three sides. In the first place, against the Confucian compromise stood the strict "ideologists" of Chineseness, and above all the great Lao-tzu himself. Confucius was his younger contemporary and once journeyed to him to pay him homage. The old mystic treated the practical philosopher rather contemptuously and declared his whole activity to be completely barren, while Confucius modestly confessed that for him the preacher of absolute indistinction was like a dragon which it is impossible to overtake. Of another kind were the opponents Confucius was bound to encounter in the person of simple folk, supporters of the unconditional status quo, adherents of every particular and accidental tradition and superstition. For them Confucius, for all his conservatism and old-faith devotion, was nevertheless a reformer and an innovator, for in bringing the ancient tradition into order and making of it a rational system, he thereby modified it. Finally, against Confucius there rose up the representatives of state despotism, who were unwilling to subject their arbitrary will to the requirements of the moral order. During his lifetime Confucius wandered without success from one appanage court to another, finding sympathy nowhere, and 250 years after his death the emperor Ch'in-shih-huang-ti ordered the chief Confucian books to be burnt and put to death as many as 400 learned followers of Confucius. After this trial, with the accession of a new dynasty, Confucianism became the state religion and philosophy of China, and this significance remains with it to the present day.

[¶3] As a typical Chinese man, Confucius is first of all an admirer of antiquity. "The sage said: I interpret, I explain the ancient books, and do not compose new ones. I believe the ancients and love them". "I was not born a scholar, but I loved the ancients and employed every effort to acquire their knowledge". "My way of teaching is very simple: I adduce examples of the conduct of the ancients, I recommend the reading of the chings (the sacred books) and I require that my disciples should accustom themselves to reflect upon the instructions read out of the chings." – "I require," says Confucius in another place, "only that which ought to be required of men. My teaching is nothing other than the teaching which the ancients delivered and left to us; to this teaching I add nothing and take nothing away from it, but transmit it in its original purity. This teaching is unchanging, – Heaven itself is its author." – One day Confucius was walking along the bank of a river and from time to time stopped to look at how the water flows. When he was asked what he found curious in the flow of the river, he answered: "The flow of water in a channel natural or dug by the hands of man is a very simple thing, and everyone knows its grounds; but what no one knows is the analogies between flowing water and the ancient scholar. The waters of the river flow without stopping, flow day and night, until they reach the spacious sea, – and the holy teaching of Yao and Shun (the ancient sovereigns) flowed without stopping down to us; let us then further its flow and hand it on to our descendants, who in their turn will hand it on to their descendants, and so to the end of the ages."

[¶4] In the ancient teaching Confucius did not find that idea of absolute indistinction to which Lao-tzu had thought his way and in which he had immersed himself. The starting point of the Confucian world-view is the "division of the way", – that dualism of the active and the passive forces, Yang and Yin, which lies at the foundation of the sacred divinatory book the I-ching (or I-king). These two forces, represented in their concrete division by heaven and earth, attain their concrete union in man. Man can enjoy being and well-being only as a social being. The fundamental form of social life is the family, and the family is founded upon the virtue of filial piety. Faithful to the behests of antiquity, Confucius requires that this piety should not be limited to living parents, but should extend to the dead as well. For him, however, this side of the matter does not retain its former significance. The primeval belief in the full reality of the life beyond the grave, though not directly denied by him, has in itself no power whatever over his mind and interests him only through its moral and practical consequences. To the question of his disciples whether the souls of the dead really exist, he answered: "... if one says that they exist, then good sons will perhaps ruin themselves over the cult of ancestors; but if one says that they do not exist, then bad sons will perhaps leave their fathers altogether without burial." Hence this conclusion: "One must bring sacrifices to the ancestors as though they were actually present; one should worship the spirits and the genii as though they were before us".

[¶5] In any case, remote ancestors occupy no significant place in Confucian morality; the force of filial piety is concentrated here chiefly upon the relation to one's immediate parents. Kun-tszy (Confucius) said: "During thy father's lifetime carefully observe his will; after his death ever direct thy gaze upon his actions; that son who for three years after the death of his father does not deviate in his conduct from the manner of acting of the departed, may be called one having filial piety".

[¶6] In order to give a livelier idea of the Chinese view of this fundamental principle of their religion and morality, let us quote from Mr Georgievsky's book the conversation between son and father in the drama Pi-pa-chi, The Story of the Flute (the father proposes to his son that he set out for the capital in order to obtain the highest academic degree; the son is afraid to leave his aged parents and his young wife).

[¶7] Father (addressing his son).

[¶8] – Thou thinkest only of the pleasures of married life and fearest not to contradict thy father.

[¶9] Son (falling on his knees and addressing Heaven).

[¶10] – Heaven! I contradict my father?! (Rising.) O my parents! can your son oppose you? O! I repeat: nothing keeps me here except your advanced age. Dear father! suppose – and it is possible – that a flood should occur: what will be said then? First they will say that your son was not imbued with filial piety, that he abandoned his aged father, his aged mother, in pursuit of heaven knows what office; then they will accuse you yourselves of want of forethought and point out that you, having an only son, made him undertake a distant journey exposed to mischances. The more I reflect, the more difficult does it become for me to fulfil your command.

[¶11] Father.

> Russian:

[¶12] – Whether to fulfil my command or not, – that depends on thee; but tell me briefly: what dost thou understand by filial piety?

[¶13] Mother (in an irritated voice).

[¶14] – O heaven! thou hast lived to be more than eighty years old and dost not know in what filial piety consists: it requires that a son should lead his aged father on leading-strings, like a child.

[¶15] Father (in a meek voice).

[¶16] – Wife! what dost thou mean by this?

[¶17] Son.

> Russian:

[¶18] – Dear father! I will answer your question. The duties of a son towards his parents consist in the following: a son must take care that in summer and in winter his parents enjoy every comfort of life; he must himself every evening make ready the bed for his parents; he must every morning, at the first crowing of the cock, address his parents with the most respectful inquiries after their health; he must in the course of the day repeatedly ask his parents whether cold or heat troubles them; a son is obliged to support his parents when they walk; he is obliged to respect what they respect and to love what they love, down to horses and dogs inclusive; a son during their lifetime must not remove himself from the house in which they live. So thought the ancients about filial piety, so did they practise it.

[¶19] Father.

> Russian:

[¶20] – My son! the duties thou hast enumerated are the most elementary. There exist many degrees of filial piety, and thou hast not spoken of its higher requirements, of filial piety par excellence.

[¶21] Mother (in an irritated voice).

[¶22] – Unhappy man! thou art not dead yet; wait, – it is only after death that one can require of a son the fulfilment of those last duties of which the book the Siao-ching speaks. For the present the question is only of the journey to the capital.

[¶23] Father.

> Russian:

[¶24] – My son, hear me! The first degree of filial piety requires the service of one's parents, the second – the service of the sovereign, the third – the attainment of high rank. To preserve the body received from one's parents and carefully to avoid everything that may injure it – this is the beginning of filial piety; to attain high rank, to act in accordance with the requirements of true morality, to leave behind one a good memory for ages to come, to the glory of one's parents – this is the end, the summit of filial piety. He who, having poor and aged parents, does not strive after high rank, is not imbued with filial piety. If by thy merits thou shalt raise thyself to the rank of a mandarin and turn the wretched dwelling of thy parents into a magnificent villa, then thou wilt thereby have fulfilled all thy duties, – such is my extreme opinion.

[¶0] The predominance of ritualism in Confucian morality. – The absence of "the extremes of altruism". – The saying about the man who fell into a well.

[¶1] Spreading in concentric circles from the domestic hearth to the throne of the father of the fatherland, filial piety constitutes the essential content of Confucian, that is, of all-Chinese morality. And the necessary form of this morality is given in the system of rites or ceremonies (in Chinese – li). If Confucius said: "I reduce all things to one principle", meaning by this filial piety, he also said: "Oh, how great is the law of duty for the virtuous man! It is a boundless ocean! … Oh, how abundant and vast it is! It comprises three hundred rites of the first category and three thousand rites of the second category". A stranger to every mystical element, to every inspiration, Confucianism demands of man not a spiritual rebirth, not an inward change of his whole disposition, but the observance of a definite system of rules, established once and for all, determining his visible relations to all the social circles among which he lives, beginning with the family. The sage said: "If you do not know the rites or laws regulating social relations, then you have nothing by which your conduct might be determined and established". And what he meant by this, rites or ceremonies in the proper sense, is evident from the following passage in the book the Li-chi edited by him (or Li-king – the book of rites): "If one does not observe the rites established from of old, or the more so abolish them, then everything will be thrown into confusion and disorders will arise. Abolish the marriage rites – there will be no spouses, and debauchery with all its crimes will develop; abolish the rite of drinking wine (at the sacrificial offerings), the distinction between elders and juniors will be lost, disputes and fights will occur; abolish the rites of burial and of the (grave-side) sacrifices, – children will not care for their deceased parents, and will cease to serve the living as well; abolish the rite of pin-tsing – the distinction between the sovereign and the officials will disappear, the appanage princes will act wilfully, oppressions and violences will arise". And therefore: "Look at nothing contrary to the rites; listen to nothing contrary to the rites; speak nothing contrary to the rites; do nothing contrary to the rites".

[¶2] The immoderate predominance of ritual imparts to the moral constitution of the Chinese a mechanical character and at the same time leaves the chief national vices untouched. In the teachings of Confucius, with all the repeated, exaggerated display of the entire importance of rites and ceremonies, we shall not find a single word in condemnation of mendacity and cruelty. The prevailing ritualism, which accustoms men to replace the substance by the semblance, even promotes the development of hypocrisy and mendacity. As for cruelty, there are against it no motives of principle whatever in Chinese (Confucian) morality, which recognises only definite duties in relation to this or that kind of people, and by no means in relation to people in general. Mr Georgievsky himself admits as much, despite all his enthusiasm for Chineseness. Here is how he characterises the moral world-view of the people he loves best: "Man must place the final goal of his being in his own personal well-being (the highest, theoretical egoism); but the attainment of the goal is possible only in the case when in practice man proves to be least of all an egoist in relation to those around him, beginning with his own parents. Man must be imbued with love first of all towards his own parents; having established himself in love towards his parents, man will find it necessary and will be able to love people who are strangers to him as well. These are the general foundations of morality that are indicated by Confucian philosophy. According to this philosophy man must not be a narrowly one-sided practical egoist, and must not fall into the extremes of altruism either, – man must bear in mind that he can attain the fullness of the highest, principled egoism only by way of altruistic self-limitation. To the Confucian the Christian requirement is alien, according to which we must, believing in God, love Him, and loving Him, love all men as ourselves, – the morality of Confucianism is in its foundation utilitarian-philosophical (the best preservation of man's subjectivity is possible only with the best relations of his to all that is objective); this morality, originally indicated by theory, gradually penetrated the spirit of the Chinese people, became practically realisable, and in a long series of centuries, establishing itself more and more, turned from a theoretical morality into, so to speak, an instinctively cultural one. Confucianism brings man's relations to men under five categories: the relations of man to his father, to his brothers (and other kinsmen), to his wife, to his friends (by whom are understood first of all the members of one society, company, guild, etc.), to his sovereign (as the representative of the state). At the foundation of these relations, positively utilitarian in the essence of Confucian philosophy, lies man's striving after his personal well-being: pietas erga parentes makes man establish himself in primary love, primary justice and primary activity, and thus secures for him social well-being in life; in his brothers and other kinsmen man has, on the one hand, a touchstone for his social qualities, and on the other a support in case of various kinds of life's adversities and vicissitudes; by conjugal love and fidelity is guaranteed the best satisfaction of man's sexual instinct; the sincerity and firmness of friendship with those persons with whom a man has occasion to be in business relations impart to the latter solidity and stability; devotion and service to the sovereign, as the representative of the state, are necessary for man (as a citizen and, in particular, as an official) because by them he promotes the well-being of that fatherland in which he himself lives with his parents, wife, children and kinsmen. As regards the relative importance of the categories indicated, the Chinaman knows no transition from the general to the particular, – he looks upon the first category as the most important of all, takes it as the primary foundation, and from it, in concentric order, develops the remaining categories, holding that a man who does not love his parents cannot love his brothers, and that one who does not love his parents and brothers cannot love his wife, his friends and his fatherland. For the Chinaman who enters upon social life and establishes his relations to people of the circle outside the family, there is no occasion to waver in the choice of guiding foundations, since they are given ready-made: on the one hand, to the members of society man must, for positively utilitarian ends, for his personal well-being, relate in the best possible manner, displaying his love, justice and activity; on the other – man must bear in mind that his kinsmen, and first of all his parents, have a preferential right to his goodwill and to its all-round manifestations, – the interests of friends, in case of a choice, should be sacrificed to the interests of kinsmen in general and of parents in particular … The Chinese are strangers to universal love for humanity, – they (with rare exceptions) are unacquainted with Christianity, do not follow Buddhism, which preaches universal altruism in the name of contempt for life, and attach no value to the doctrine of Mo-tzu, understanding that this doctrine hangs in mid-air. Having no foundations for universal love, the Chinese consider it theoretically untenable, and practically, in the sense of the concentric sequence of relations (parents, clan, society, fatherland, humanity), unattainable for man; they think that a separate individual can be a universal altruist only in the case when he has neglected the preliminary duties in relation to his parents (clan, society, fatherland) and has made a leap into the void. Not being imbued with universal love, and placing the goal of his life in personal well-being, the Chinaman feels an inner contentment, since he bears in mind that the attainment of this well-being is conditioned by the correlatively conjoined well-being of the objects (parents, kinsmen, wife, friends, fellow-citizens). To the Chinaman it is incomprehensible that one could count all men as one's brothers and love them as oneself; incomprehensible also is that one could recognise human dignity in all men; by man he understands only the cultural, social man, and he regards individuals who have lost their human qualities (?) and have left the social order (criminals, beggars, etc.) as nothing other than animals, and noxious ones at that".

[¶3] "What is each individual Chinaman? – Mr Georgievsky asks further. – He is a Confucian in theory (most often), and in practice (almost always) he is a man who places the goal of his life in personal earthly well-being and makes use, for the attainment of the goal, of filial piety as the fundamental means, conditioning all other means. Confucian philosophy holds sway over the minds of the Chinese, and the latter are perfectly at one among themselves in their fundamental views on life and its content. Units homogeneous in their moral essence are the organic ingredients of groups formed upon three different foundations; every Chinaman is closely bound, first, with those persons who constitute the circle of his kinship (determined by the degrees of mourning), secondly, with the members of that corporation (artel, company, society, etc.) to which he belongs by his occupations, thirdly, with the inhabitants of his village, small town, city, township, etc.".

[¶4] "If a Chinaman, through insufficiency of self-determination or through inability to be a law unto himself, begins to display anti-social qualities and to direct his will to activity that might disturb the harmony of the life of the group, then the members of the latter immediately take measures so that the evil be destroyed or at least not spread beyond the limits of what is possible for them to control. In China both the government and society treat criminals very strictly; no special care is bestowed on the preservation of the life and health of the latter, – the Chinese remove the anti-social members of society, not ennobled by humaneness (!) and culture, with the same zeal with which they root out weeds in the cornfields".

[¶5] Treating criminals and beggars as weeds, the Chinese, brought up by Confucius, are strangers to "the extremes of altruism" (in Mr Georgievsky's excellent expression) also in relation to people who have not left the social order but have only fallen into accidental misfortune. Repugnant to them is not only the idea of universal love but also the idea of self-sacrifice in general; their morality is limited not only in the extent of its object but also in the degree of its demands. To risk one's life for the salvation of one's neighbour is, according to the teaching of Confucius, madness.

[¶6] "Tsai-ngo put this question: "If a man filled with the virtue of humaneness hears that someone has fallen into a well, will he display the virtue of humaneness if he rushes to save the drowning man?" The sage answered: "Why should he act thus? In such a case the superior man must withdraw; he must not rush after the drowning man; he must not be mistaken as to the extent of the moral duty, which by no means obliges him to lose his life (for the salvation of another), which would be contrary to the principles of reason".

[¶7] Egoism tempered by prudence, limited (partly instinctively, partly by force) by solidarity with those social groups on which the fate of the individual person really and obviously depends – such is the moral world-view of the Chinese. In this they remain true to their general principle. Recognising absolute truth only in the past, in that which is given, they must reject the demands of universal love and solidarity, which constitute the ideal of the future.

### Section VIII

[¶9] An assessment of the Chinese ideal. – Its fundamental truth. – The narrowness of Chinese culture. – The insufficiency of the official religion for the Chinese themselves. – Taoism and Chinese Buddhism.

[¶10] The Chinese not only dreamed, like all other peoples, of the golden age of a far-off past; they strove in every way to continue this golden age without interruption, giving over themselves all authority to the past alone, renouncing creative thought, renouncing independent initiative, suppressing in themselves every dream of a new and better future. To preserve unchangingly the order of life received from the ancestors and to hand it on to the generations to come, adding nothing and taking nothing away – such is the essence of Chinese wisdom, unconditionally conservative and traditional, or, to put it in Russian, Old-Belief. The Chinese acknowledge perfection only in that which has already come to pass; religion and morality merge for them into a single cult of an order once for all given and established. The dead – from a deceased father or grandfather up to and including the hundred heavenly spirits – these are the true object of private and public religion; the veneration of elders, the living representatives of the traditional order – from the father of a family up to and including the Bogdikhan – this is the foundation of personal and social morality. On this unshakeable foundation there was established from of old a harmonious hierarchical order, embracing all the relations of life and secured by a complex system of rites (Li). To acknowledge this order in deed, to observe these rites with exactness – this is all that the Chinese require of themselves for their personal and national well-being. To be just, one must add that although the Confucian philosophy (at least its most recent interpretations) does, as we have seen, reduce the conservative Chinese ideal to the principle of theoretical egoism, yet in the popular mass the realisation of this ideal presupposes the presence of social and moral (altruistic) instincts and feelings, independently of any utilitarian considerations. Service to ancestors and elders cannot be performed by all as a duty if there is no attachment to these ancestors and elders. In China there is a whole extensive literature which extols filial devotion and perpetuates the historical examples of this devotion, reaching to a completely disinterested self-sacrifice. And the service of departed ancestors was for the model Chinaman not merely the performance of an obligatory rite, but was joined with corresponding feelings of the soul, the intensity of which reached to visible communion with the object of the cult or, if you will, to hallucinations. This is what we read about this in the book the Li-Ki: "The pious son (before the sacrifice to the departed ancestors) exercises himself in abstinence, outward and inward. On the days of the fast he recalls the whole life of his departed ones, calls to mind their countenances and smiles, the expressions of their faces and their speech, thinks of their intentions and plans, brings to his memory all that gladdened them and pleased them. Having thus spent three days of the fast, he sees with his own eyes those for whose sake he fasted. On the day of the sacrifice itself, when he enters the domestic temple of the ancestors, he sees his departed parents sitting in their places. Turning round and coming up to the door, he reverently hearkens to their familiar voice; going out through the door and hearing sighs, he recognises the sound of their sighs. Therefore the piety of the ancient sovereigns was expressed in this, that they always kept before their eyes the image of their departed parents, listened to their voice, never forgot their heart's desires and intentions. With such supreme love the ancestors manifest their presence; with such supreme reverence they appear as standing before him … When Wên-wang offered sacrifices, he served the dead as the living, he thought of the departed as though he himself would no longer wish to live".

[¶11] If, on the one hand, the Chinese ideal, wholly turned back to the past, presupposes in the Chinese people a special feeling of heartfelt attachment to the ancestors, then, on the other hand, this feeling itself developed and strengthened thanks to the conscious affirmation and legal establishment of the Old-Belief ideal: it educated the Chinese in their peculiar altruism. The success of this education should not, of course, be exaggerated. The emperor Wên-wang, and likewise those exemplary sons of whom we are told in the edifying little books specially devoted to filial piety, constituted and still constitute a rare exception (otherwise they would not have found their way into the Chinese calendar of saints). In most cases the patriarchal order is maintained not so much by tender feelings as by cruel criminal punishments. Mr Georgievsky himself conscientiously enumerates the abundant strokes of the bamboo and the various kinds of capital punishment to which, by law, Chinese men and Chinese women who have violated their family duties are liable. But we shall not linger, in assessing the Chinese ideal, over the particular reality that does not correspond to it; let us turn to the essence of this ideal itself and to the general results which the Chinese nation has attained under its age-long influence.

[¶12] The Old-Belief Chinese ideal, taken in itself, contains the foundation of all truth and of all morality. The past has, first of all, rights over us. We do not ourselves begin our life, we receive it from that which was before us; we owe it to the past, to the ancestors. Without the recognition of this dependence and without the payment of our debt to the past, we have in conscience no right to live. To preserve the link with the departed ancestors and to serve them is, without doubt, the first duty of the living. The only question is: how best to fulfil this duty? Is it enough for this to preserve unchangingly that which obtained in the time of the ancestors, is it enough by means of sacrifices to enter with the departed into a more or less fictitious communion of the senses and by means of divinations to inform oneself of their more or less fictitious will? And, first of all, is it possible, and is it worth while, to preserve without change that which has necessarily undergone the terrible change called death? But, without prejudging the question of principle, let us first assess the Chinese faith historically, by its fruits.

[¶13] The historical fruits of the Chinese world-view we have outlined come down, mainly, to three general facts. The first of these facts speaks in favour of the Chinese ideal, the second against it, and the third, though still less favourable to the Chinese ideal, at the same time gives a good opinion of the Chinese themselves, not allowing one to see in them men finally petrified in traditional ritualism. The first fact is the strength and solidity, unparalleled in history, of the Chinese national and state body. Whereas other nations that lived apart like China have either long since lost their independence, becoming an easy prey of foreigners, like India, or have vanished altogether even in the ethnographic sense, like the ancient Mexicans and Peruvians, – China not only preserved without any detriment, in the course of three or four thousand years, her national and political distinctness, but also extended her influence over neighbouring tribes, absorbed them into her state organism, and at the present time people who are least of all well-disposed towards the Middle Empire are compelled to set the Chinese and European cultures side by side as equal in strength, if not in value. The admirers of China rightly point to her longevity as an important advantage; they are right too in this, that the advantage is not accidental but genuinely earned by the Chinese. Having laid at the foundation of their national life the commandment: honour thy father, they rightly received the reward promised for this: that it shall be well with thee, and thou shalt be long-lived upon the earth. In honouring the dead above all, the Chinese proved to be the most tenacious of peoples; by the fulfilment of the first fundamental duty China secured for herself the first fundamental good – long life; in acknowledging her dependence on the past, she consolidated her present national independence.

[¶14] The gift of earthly well-being and long life undoubtedly testifies in fact in favour of the Chinese principle of life. But alongside this there remains another equally undoubted fact, namely that Chinese culture, with all its solidity and material fullness, has proved spiritually barren and useless to the rest of humanity. It is good for the Chinese themselves, but it has given the world not a single great idea and not a single enduring and unconditionally valuable creation in any domain. The Chinese are a big people, but not a great one. In this people there have been no great men either. The sole exception is Lao-tzu. But while marvelling at the bold and original turns of his thought, one should not forget that everything essential in that thought was expressed with no less boldness, but with greater clarity and fullness, by the Indian mystics, the authors of the Upanishads and the Bhagavadgita. – Chinese literature is enormous, but of its character and worth one may judge by the specimens that have been translated into European languages: with the exception of a few truly poetic songs and tales, such as are found among all peoples, even quite uncultured ones, everything else is devoid of any aesthetic significance and can have only a historical and ethnographic interest. The Chinese drama belongs to that "natural-conversational genre" which was introduced into Russian literature by Kuzma Prutkov and into Western European literature by Ibsen. Just as little artistic creation has manifested itself in the Chinese novel; the presumed unsatisfactoriness of translations as regards belles-lettres can only soften, but not essentially alter, our assessment. But even this softening circumstance does not exist for those domains of spiritual activity where the question of language plays no role at all. Thus it is indisputable that in music, in painting, and also in positive science the Chinese have stopped at the lowest, elementary stages, although in certain cases they have displayed a great capacity for minute work. As for the properly Chinese, Confucian philosophy, it contains only practical worldly wisdom ad usum Sinensium, that is, in essence a preaching of moderation and punctiliousness, not infrequently reaching to the truths of M. de la Palisse.

[¶15] However, there is no need for us to denounce, from the Christian and European point of view, the narrowness of Chinese life and thought, and to point out the impossibility for the human spirit of being finally satisfied with those limits of moderation and prudence within which the Chinese ideal is confined. The unsoundness of these limits is best exposed by the Chinese themselves, who in whole masses strain to break out, at least in their personal existence, beyond the bounds of the rational-moral order and equilibrium of Chinese life. Some do this physically, stupefying themselves with opium, which gives them a fantastically boundless life instead of that moderate reality to which they are condemned in a sober state. Others turn to more spiritual means, which are offered them by the ministers of two mystical religions – Taoism and Buddhism – alien to the properly Chinese, that is, Confucian ideal. This search by the Chinese for other paths of life away from their official, national and state religion is that third general fact which testifies against the Chinese ideal and at the same time in favour of the Chinese themselves.

[¶16] The followers of the Taoist religion link themselves with Lao-tzu and with his teaching concerning the tao (dao is another pronunciation of the same word). And indeed this religion issued from the school of the disciples of the old mystic, who materialised the ideas of their teacher. Lao-tzu, as we know, understood by the tao the absolute indistinction of all things, or the universal principle of being in a state of pure potentiality, unmanifested and not acting. The Taoists seek in the dao the secret of eternal and blessed life, unchanging and all-embracing – something in the nature of the philosopher's stone or the elixir of life. But, probably because it is impossible to attain the complete possession of this great secret, the Taoist monks have changed it into small coin and live by sorcery, quack-healing and the trade in various magic nostrums. At the same time they are the servants of a great multitude of gods, of whom, of course, the author of the Tao-te-king thought least of all. In essence present-day Taoism is merely a renewal, in more complex forms, of that primordial religion of uncultured peoples (chiefly of the Mongol race) which is known under the general name of shamanism. The Chinese, like their other fellow-tribesmen, were originally shamanists, and after their separation into a distinct nation and state shamanism survived as the religious subsoil in the life and consciousness of the simple people. The cult of familial ancestors, to say nothing of state ancestors, could by no means have been originally the religion of the Chinese. In the primordial state of sexual anarchy and promiscuity, when no one could know his living father, no one could serve departed ancestors either; their cult evidently presupposes an organised patriarchal family. The true object of the sorcerous shamanist cult was likewise spirits, but not the spirits of ancestors, rather spirits of indeterminate rank, in which the character of deceased men was mixed and fused with the character of the elemental forces of nature, which moreover not infrequently appeared in the form of animals (zoomorphism). This is only natural; for in the life of the savage the half-conscious instincts of soul and body so far predominate over rational cerebral activity, his existence is so fused with the phenomena of surrounding nature, on which he wholly depends, and personal self-consciousness is so weakly developed in him, that he is altogether incapable of drawing a definite line between the human spirit and the elemental spirit, and he finds the most intense expression of natural life not in man but in the animal.

[¶17] The Taoist gods are the same indefinitely elemental spirits of shamanism, only more fixed in the human image. The character of the cult likewise remains essentially shamanist, that is, sorcerous or magical. Sinologists sometimes express their surprise that the subtle abstract speculations of Lao-tzu degenerated among his followers into crude sorcery. But there is here a certain inward justice, though not without irony. We know that Lao-tzu preached a turning back and was a determined enemy of cultural progress, on the principled ground that the true path of life, the tao, is absolute emptiness and indistinction, whereas all cultural progress is conditioned by the differentiation and complication of life. He preached this more in words, being himself an enlightened thinker and a cultured man. But ideas have their own real logic, and by virtue of that logic the Taoists carry out in deed the words of the old teacher, having returned to the simplest elemental religion of uncultured peoples, where the human spirit is not distinguished from the material forces of nature, and conscious activity is replaced by passive magical communion with beings of a lower order.

[¶18] The masses of the Chinese, who have recourse from time to time to Taoism, seek in it that which the state-established ritual religion cannot give them – miraculous help in the calamities of life and free communion with powers not of this world. The Taoist monks, despised by the learned officialdom as superstitious folk and charlatans, possessing no official position in the state, are dear to the people precisely for this unofficial character of theirs, as men who have by vocation given themselves to the religious work, and do not perform it as one of the appurtenances of state service. But the religious need of the Chinese people was not satisfied by Taoism either, which helps by its sorcery in the calamities of the present life, but knows as little as the official religion of the life to come. With an answer to the higher religious questions, left aside both by Confucianism and by Taoism, Buddhism came from India to China in the middle of the first century of our era and took there a firm, though not a dominant, position. Of course, Chinese Buddhism is not that which Shâkya-muni preached and which has been preserved in the Tripitaka; between them there exists approximately the same relation as we have seen between present-day Taoism and the proper teaching of Lao-tzu, set forth in the Tao-te-king.

[¶19] Original Indian Buddhism may be reduced to three main ideas: over the measureless host of the Indian gods it exalted the man Buddha, a god by his own act, who by his own exploit wins for himself the significance of an absolute supreme being; to the infinite series of wanderings beyond the grave it set a limit by the ideal of unconditional rest – nirvana; finally, having pointed out to all men a common path of salvation in the extinction of the will and in a gentle attitude towards all that lives, Buddhism at one stroke dealt a blow both at the ritualism of the Brahmin religion with its complex system of sacrifices and prayers, and at the external physical asceticism of the Indian saints and ascetics, and at the principled denial of rights to the lower castes. – But while rising above the national religion of India, Buddhism did not, however, deny its positive foundations. In placing Buddha above all the gods, it thereby acknowledged their existence, confirmed the reality of polytheism, assigning it only a secondary place; in seeking ways for the cessation of the wanderings beyond the grave, Buddhism testified to its belief in the world beyond the grave with all its distinctions; finally, in attaching particular importance to the fulfilment of the moral law, the religion of Buddha did not deny material worship of God either; it even presented the Asian East with a new cult of various relics – on a scale hitherto unprecedented. It is known that the profession of faith of the orthodox Buddhist came to be expressed already from early times in a brief formula: I believe in Buddha, I believe in the religious law (dharma), I believe in the church (sangha). Thus the new religion was by no means limited to moral teaching alone, but contained within itself the seeds of positive religious beliefs, which were not slow to develop. The Chinese found in Buddhism a positive religion, richer in mystical content and at the same time more ideal and more moral than Confucianism and Taoism. In present-day Chinese Buddhism there is especially developed the belief in several personal divine beings of both sexes (modifications of Buddha with forgetfulness of the original idea) and in a world beyond the grave with a hell, a purgatory and a heaven in countless subdivisions. Buddhist monks enjoy greater respect than Taoist ones. The principle preached by them (though but little realised in practice) of moral asceticism and a gentle attitude towards all creatures has perhaps softened to some degree the chief defects of the Chinese national character: practical materialism and cruelty.

[¶0] The "sinicisation" of Taoism and Buddhism. – The internal contradiction in the Chinese ideal: it is unable to fulfil its own truth. – The true mission of Europe in the Far East.

[¶1] The Chinese who have recourse to the magical aid of Taoism and to the spiritual consolations of Buddhism do so exclusively as private persons, for the satisfaction of their personal religious needs. But as a member of the Chinese nation, as a part of this religious and political whole, every Chinaman professes the official state religion and unfailingly performs its ritual duties. The Taoist and Buddhist clergy are merely private corporations recognised by the state, but having no authority whatever over the laity. Taoist and Buddhist communities or churches do not exist in China; every Chinaman, whatever his personal beliefs, belongs to one great society and acknowledges over himself only one supreme authority – the Son of Heaven, who unites indivisibly in himself both spiritual and temporal autocracy.

[¶2] The Chinese government has proved wise enough, conscious as it was of the inadequacy of a single state religion in relation to the subjective religious needs of its subjects, not only to permit the unobstructed existence of Taoism and Buddhism in China, but also to give them its supreme sanction: the Son of Heaven, being the supreme priest of the "hundred spirits", professes by public sacrifices in Taoist and Buddhist temples his adherence to these two religions as well. In view of this, the governmental regulation of the Taoist and Buddhist cults presents nothing offensive even to their most zealous adherents. Thanks to this constant state regulation, and also to a centuries-long coexistence among one people of so definite a national character, the three Chinese religions have come very close together and in many points have become intermixed. It has passed into a proverb among the Chinese: san-kyao-i-en, that is, the three doctrines are one; the essential difference between them is clear only to learned Confucians, who continue in their books to polemicise sharply against Taoism and Buddhism as against alien and unnecessary superstitions that violate the sober simplicity and uniformity of the official cult.

[¶3] Be that as it may, the development of Taoism and Buddhism in China, though it testifies to the existence among the Chinese of a religious feeling not satisfied by official ritualism, constitutes nevertheless no progress in relation to the general Chinese order of life, which is ready to include within itself all manner of private beliefs, provided only they do not touch its fundamental principle, provided only they do not encroach upon the general Chinese traditional ideal of a patriarchal national and state theocracy, motionless and unchanging as that past in which alone the whole Chinese people believes.

[¶4] Assessing this Chinese ideal on its merits, we find it true in its starting point, namely in the recognition of the rights of the past (or, to speak concretely, of the ancestors) over the present (over us), – in the recognition of our duty to serve the ancestors, to affirm and strengthen in ourselves our attachment to them. But love for the ancestors is subject to the same law as every other love. The law of love requires of us that we do good to the object beloved. What good, then, can we do to the ancestors, by what can we really serve them? In the state of spiritual infancy men answer this question very simply: they feed the dead ancestors, they strive to afford them the possibility of continuing beyond the grave their former material life. But with the development of religious consciousness such a simple relation becomes impossible. There arises a doubt whether material existence is a good in itself; there arises the question of true life. That the ancestors did not possess true life is clear already from the fact that they died; for true life must be eternal, must contain within itself the power of its own infinite continuation, and not the fatal necessity of its cessation. Why, then, should we strive to restore to the shades of the ancestors artificially the shadow of earthly life, when even the real fullness of this earthly life has no truth in it and cannot be acknowledged as a worthy being? Even if the assurance were preserved that one can really sustain the posthumous existence of the ancestors by sacrificial feeding, it would still have to be admitted that this is insufficient for a true service of the ancestors, for imparting to them the true good of life. In the same way, although the natural attachment to the ancestors impels us to preserve unchangingly that order of life which obtained in their time, yet obviously this too is insufficient for the true performance of our duty. What profit is it to our ancestors that we live and die as they lived and died? That order of life, that constitution of society which could not save them while they lived – how will it save them after death? And the point precisely is to save them, to bestow upon them that true life which they did not have, and which we do not have either, if only we repeat without change their untrue and therefore perished life.

[¶5] Not being in the past nor in the present, true life stands before us as the future, as a task upon which we must work. For this future cannot come of itself, apart from us – in that case there would be no reason why it should not have arrived long ago – it must be won by the active efforts of humanity itself. If attachment to the past, the service of the ancestors, constitutes the truth of the Chinese world-view, then this truth attains its fulfilment only in the Christian, European idea of universal progress, as the path towards the achievement of true life. If we are really attached to the past, if we deeply love the ancestors, then we must strive not to preserve unchangingly those old forms of life under which perished what is dear to us, but on the contrary to change our life constantly for the better, to perfect it, until we attain that fullness of being which will combine all things in itself and will resurrect the past for an eternal and truly unchanging life.

[¶6] We Europeans must offer China not the negation but the fulfilment of its vital principle. Unceasing progress as the means of a real service of the ancestors, a continuous striving towards an ideal future as the true path for the resurrection of the past – that is the true, inward reconciliation of the two extreme cultures. But in order that we may turn to the paganism of the Far East with the good tidings of the fulfilment of its cherished dreams, as the first Christian preachers once turned to the Greco-Roman paganism, it is necessary that we ourselves should be faithful to that full truth which Christianity has revealed to us. Otherwise China will be for us not an acquisition but a menacing danger – the same kind of danger as the Muslim world was for medieval Europe.

### Section X

[¶8] The idea of false progress and false Chineseness in Europe. – Conclusion.

[¶9] The opposition of the two cultures – the Chinese and the European – reduces in essence to the opposition of two general ideas: of order, on the one hand, and of progress, on the other. From the point of view of order the most important thing is the solidity of social relations; the idea of progress demands their ideal perfection. A solid order is a state which is maintained by the force of the past; progressive perfecting is an activity determined by the ideal of the future. That China has attained a solid order – this is beyond doubt; how far European progress leads to social perfection – that is the question.

[¶10] True progress cannot have an exclusively critical, destructive character, cannot be merely the opposite of order; true progress is the progress of order.

[¶11] Since the last century there has gained currency in Europe a representation of progress as founded upon an unconditionally negative relation to the past, to the traditional order. Such a representation is not only far from the truth, but in it the essential marks of the very idea of progressive development, or progress, are directly abolished. This idea presupposes an essential and conscious unity of that which develops or progresses, that is, first of all a real inward solidarity of the old and the new generations of progressing humanity. If the new truth has no deep roots in the past, if we must begin today's work with the simple destruction of what is given, then, of course, our new truth will soon be cast aside as old, and today's work will tomorrow be destroyed as good for nothing. In breaking the link with the past, in renouncing our true solidarity with the ancestors, we give our posterity the right to break the link with our work, to renounce solidarity with us. And in that case the supposed progress of humanity will not only lose its essential support in real life, but will also completely lose any definite ideal of the future. If the starting point of the historical process is falsehood and nullity, then its goal turns out to be unconditionally unknown, – perhaps also falsehood and nullity; and in that case by what ideal motive can our activity be determined? It is not I who refute the false idea of progress by reducing it to absurdity; no, this absurdity is directly affirmed by the representatives of that idea themselves, who loudly proclaim the relativity of truth, by virtue of which what today is acknowledged as truth will tomorrow be falsehood and will be replaced by a new supposed truth, which in its turn will prove to be falsehood, and so on to infinity. But why should such a succession of deceptions, of which each is in essence neither worse nor better than another – why should such a "bad infinity" be called development or progress?

[¶12] The theoretical unsoundness of this false idea of progress is clear to philosophical thought. Its practical consequences, which came to light in the French Revolution and in the rectilinear radicalism bequeathed by it, alarmed a certain part of European society. But the reactionary tendency in Europe, instead of opposing to the false idea of a disorderly and senseless progress the idea of true Christian progress, which contains within itself also the positive principles of order – the idea of such an order of life as possesses both deep real roots in the historical soil and an ideal summit reaching to heaven – in a word, instead of turning to the fullness of Christian truth, the reactionary tendency, itself not noticing it, began to seek salvation for Europe in the principles of Chineseness, in the unconditional cult of the past, in exclusive cares for the maintenance of a traditional order undermined from every side, with its accidental forms that have lost all inward power. A conscious or unconscious Chinesing of Europe cannot succeed, but it can be pernicious. Its pernicious consequences are already beginning to appear. In the name of a purely Chinese assertion that one must love only one's own and prize only one's own, the ideal of universal Christianity is already being denied as an idle utopia. In the name of a purely Chinese practical materialism and cult of actual force, the Christian ideas of justice and universal love are directly rejected. Both extremes are worthy of each other, both in their theoretical untruth and in their practical danger. And both alike deprive us of inward strength in the impending collision of the two cultural worlds – of Europe and of China.

[¶13] If in the European world the principle of a false, self-destroying progress gains the upper hand, then to the harmoniously united and self-assured Chinese force we shall oppose only a chaos of subjective strivings and fragmented egoistic interests, without faith and without an ideal. Nor will it be better in the case where the Chinese ideal gains the upper hand among ourselves. In the first place, it cannot have complete success; Chinamen in spirit we shall not become in any case, and to the discords that already exist a new division will merely be added. And in the second place, even if this were possible, the result would be still worse. The Chinese ideal is for the Chinese a principle of strength; for Europeans it would be a principle of weakness and destruction. The adoption of this ideal would be for us a self-negation in the bad sense of that word, that is, a renunciation of our own good – a renunciation of Christianity. But such a renunciation would be equivalent to the complete loss of the very cause of our historical existence. For in Christianity there is not only the ideal of our future but also the spiritual roots of our past, – in it is the faith of our ancestors. In adopting for ourselves the pagan ideal, in renouncing universal Christianity, we shall prove first of all impious in regard to our own ancestors, that is, in betraying the full Christian truth we shall not retain even that share of truth by which Chinese paganism is strong. Our false conservatism will fall apart from internal contradiction just as false progressism will. And before both the one and the other the Chinese will prove not only stronger but also more in the right than we. They are faithful to themselves. If we, the European Christian world, are also faithful to ourselves, that is, faithful to universal Christianity, then China will not be terrible to us, and we shall conquer the Far East as well – not by force of arms, but by that force of spiritual attraction which is inherent in the profession of the full truth, and which acts upon human souls, to whatever tribe they may belong.

[¶3] It must not be thought that the decree of the Bogdikhan was merely an act of his personal arbitrariness, which might be revoked by one of his successors. In reality the decision of the Chinese government is the fruit of a conviction, thoroughly considered and verified, of the necessity of borrowing external culture from the Europeans in order the more successfully to defend themselves against them and in the future to subjugate them.Return to A000070

[¶6] Of the canonical Pentateuch of the Chinese we shall have to make use only of the sacred history, the Shu-king (or, in Western form, the Shu-kun). The classical Four Books I have used in the French translation of Pauthier (Confucius et Mencius, les quatre livres de philosophie morale et politique de la Chine, Paris, 1841), and the first two books of it also in the German translation of Plänckner with its extensive but partly fanciful commentaries (Confucius, Ta-Hio, Erhabene Wissenschaft, aus dem Chinesischen übersetzt und erklärt von Reinhold von Plänckner, Leipzig, 1875, and Confucius, Tchong-Yong, der unwandelbare Seelengrund, Leipz., 1878). For Lao-tzu I had the translation by Stanislas Julien, which still remains exemplary (Lao-Tseu, Tao-te-King, Livre de la voie et de la vertu, Paris, 1842). Among aids I may mention Plath, Die Religion der alten Chinesen, München, 1862, and his Der Cultus der alten Chinesen, 1863; then Annales du musée Guimet, vols. I, XI, XII; and chiefly the above-mentioned work of Mr Georgievsky, in which much material is collected not only for confirming but also for limiting his view. In any case, our sinologist has penetrated more deeply than most of his confrères into the very essence of the Chinese faith and life.Return to A000090

Confucius, Tchong-Yong, der unwandelbare Seelengrund, Leipz., 1878). [¶37] The sovereign's personal ancestors are obviously not identical with the ancestors of the state, that is, with the "hundred spirits", or "Heaven". There is, however, ground for thinking that deceased sovereigns worthy of that title entered into the composition of Heaven as its indispensable and eminent members, so that the reigning sovereign's veneration of his deceased ancestors and predecessors likewise entered into the imperial cult of the "hundred spirits". [¶0] In order not to display anti-social qualities and not to disturb the "harmony of the life of the group", there is no need of fullness of self-determination and of the "ability to be a law unto oneself": it is enough to be an ant in an ant-hill. And when such instinctive solidarity does not operate, then to its aid, as Mr Georgievsky himself points out, come criminal punishments, among which a prominent place is occupied by the slow death penalty by means of cutting the whole body into small pieces.Return to A070050

[¶4] Japan too has managed to preserve her national and political independence; but, in the first place, Japanese culture is younger than the Chinese and developed under its external influence, and, in the second place, the geographical position of the island kingdom served it as an external safeguard. However, to judge by the haste with which the Japanese adopt not only the technical side of European civilisation but also its vital principles, the Japanese themselves apparently do not greatly value the peculiarities of their culture.Return to A080050

[¶5] It is said that one cannot judge by translations. Yet the essential merits of Homer and Shakespeare are preserved in translations too. There is no need to know Hebrew in order to feel the beauty of the Bible, or Sanskrit in order to understand the profundity of the Indian philosophers and the charm of Indian poetry.Return to A080060

[¶6] The Tripitaka – three collections (literally, three baskets) of sacred books. The first collection – the sutras – is the Buddhist gospel, containing legends from the life of Shâkya-muni and his edifying sermons; the second collection – the vinaya – contains the statutes of the primitive Buddhist church; the third – the abidharma – comprises Buddhist metaphysics.Return to A080100

[¶7] The reincarnation of souls in earthly bodies is by no means the only kind of immortality in the Indian world-view, whether in Brahmanism or in Buddhism.Return to A080110

[¶8] The head of Tibetan Buddhism, the so-called Dalai Lama, has no officially recognised authority over the Buddhist clergy of China proper; while the unofficial moral influence of the Tibetan hierarchy is subject to a double control by the Chinese government, which regulates Buddhist affairs at home and at the same time keeps supervision over the high priest himself in Tibet, who stands under the temporal protectorate of the Bogdikhan.Return to A090020

[¶9] Plath, Der Cultus der alten Chinesen, 125, 126. As regards the object of the cult, it is indeed not always possible to draw a definite boundary between the "hundred spirits" of the general Chinese religion, on the one hand, and the gods of Taoism and of degenerate Buddhism, on the other.Return to A090030

> Russian: Plath, Der Cultus der alten Chinesen, 125, 126.

[¶10] The idea of true life is not alien to Buddhism (the later Buddhism), nor even to Taoism. But true life is represented to the followers of Buddha and Lao-tzu as the state of individual enlightened souls, and not as the collective task of all humanity; the idea of world progress and of the kingdom of God we find only on Jewish-Christian ground.Return to A090060
