[¶0] LADY. Why don't you go on?

[¶1] MR. Z. The manuscript stops here. Father Pansophius did not finish his story. Already ill, he told me he intended to complete it ‘as soon as I get better’. But he did not get better. The end of his story is buried with him in the Danilov Monastery cemetery.

[¶2] LADY. But you remember what he told you. Tell us, then.

[¶3] MR. Z. I remember only the main outlines. After Christianity's spiritual leaders and representatives went into the Arabian desert, where crowds of faithful devotees of truth gathered from every country, the new pope's wonders and miracles freely corrupted all the remaining superficial Christians who had not yet lost faith in the Antichrist. He announced that, by the power of his keys, he had opened the gates between the earthly world and the world beyond. Communication between the living and the dead, and between people and demons, became an everyday occurrence. Unheard-of forms of mystical lust and devil-worship spread. The emperor had barely established himself firmly in the religious sphere and, yielding to his ‘father's’ seductive voice, declared himself the sole true incarnation of the supreme deity of the universe, when unexpected trouble arose: the Jews rebelled. This nation, then numbering thirty million, had not been wholly uninvolved in preparing the superman's worldwide success. When he moved his residence to Jerusalem, secretly spreading the rumour that his chief purpose was to establish Israel's dominion over the world, the Jews proclaimed him their Messiah. Their enthusiasm and devotion knew no bounds. Now they suddenly rose in wrath and vengeance. Father Pansophius presented this reversal, unquestionably foretold in Scripture and church tradition, perhaps too simply and realistically. The Jews had considered the emperor a true and perfect Israelite by blood. They unexpectedly learned that he was not even circumcised. That same day all Jerusalem, and the next day all Palestine, rose against him. Boundless, ardent devotion to Israel's saviour, the promised Messiah, turned into equally boundless and ardent hatred of the crafty deceiver and shameless impostor. The whole Jewish people rose as one. Their enemies were astonished to see that Israel's soul lived, deep down, by the power of an all-consuming feeling, the hope and wrath of its eternal messianic faith, rather than calculations and aspirations of Mammon. Surprised by the uprising, the emperor lost his self-control and decreed death for all disobedient Jews and Christians. Thousands and tens of thousands who could not arm themselves in time were mercilessly slaughtered. But a Jewish army of a million soon took Jerusalem and confined the Antichrist in Haram al-Sharif. Only part of his guard supported him, too weak to overpower the enemy's masses. With his pope's magical help, the emperor escaped through the besiegers and soon reappeared in Syria at the head of a countless pagan army. The Jews advanced to meet him with little hope of success. But as soon as the armies' advance parties met, a terrible earthquake struck. The crater of a huge volcano rose from the bottom of the Dead Sea, whose shores held the imperial army's camp. Fiery streams joined into a lake of fire that swallowed the emperor, his countless troops and his constant companion Pope Apollonius, whose magic could not help him. Meanwhile, in fear and terror, the Jews fled towards Jerusalem, praying to Israel's God for deliverance. As the Holy City came into sight, a great flash of lightning opened the sky from east to west. They saw Christ descending to them in royal garments, with nail wounds on his outstretched hands. At the same time, a crowd of Christians led by Peter, John and Paul moved from Sinai to Zion, while other ecstatic crowds gathered from every direction. These were all the Jews and Christians executed by the Antichrist. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

[¶4] Father Pansophius intended to end his story there. Its subject was the conclusion of our historical process, the Antichrist's appearance, triumph and destruction, rather than the final catastrophe of the universe.

[¶5] POLITICIAN. And you think this ending is near?

[¶6] MR. Z. There will still be plenty of chatter and bustle on the stage. But the whole drama was written long ago, and neither audience nor actors are allowed to alter it.

[¶7] LADY. But what, ultimately, does this drama mean? I still don't understand why your Antichrist hates God so much when, essentially, he is kind rather than evil.

[¶8] MR. Z. Precisely: he is not kind in essence. That is the whole meaning. I take back my earlier words about not being able to explain the Antichrist through proverbs. One very simple proverb explains him completely: ‘All that glitters is not gold.’ This counterfeit good has more than enough glitter, but no genuine power.

[¶9] GENERAL. But notice where the curtain falls on this historical drama: on war, on a clash of two armies. So our conversation's ending has returned to its beginning. How do you like that, Prince? Goodness! Where is the Prince?

[¶10] POLITICIAN. Didn't you see? He quietly left at that moving moment when Elder John drove the Antichrist into a corner. I didn't want to interrupt the reading, and then I forgot.

[¶11] GENERAL. He's run away, by God! Run away a second time. And how he struggled to control himself! But he still couldn't stomach that particular brand. Oh Lord!
