## 27. The Significance of Dogma

[¶0] If a person today opens the calendar and reads the words designating the approaching Sunday, “Sunday of the 318 Holy Fathers at Nicaea,” in whom will those words arouse any memories, feelings, or thoughts, even such as the names of Kulikovo Field or Poltava usually arouse in us? For the vast majority of educated people, Nicaea and the 318 Fathers are no more than last year's snow. Yet Christianity remains our spiritual homeland, from which we cannot detach ourselves in the depths of our destiny. Indifferently forgetting its history, the great names and periods of its life, can harm only ourselves, the clarity and fullness of our consciousness, making us into a kind of people “who remember no kinship.”

[¶1] There was a time when religious dogmas were the chief, almost the only, spiritual interest. This was an anomaly for which the Byzantine world, especially subject to it in the latter half of its existence, paid dearly. But the trouble lay in no way in a living interest in the truths of faith. On the contrary, it lay in an interest in these truths that was too external and abstract, insufficiently alive. The organic connection between faith and life was being lost, and discussions of dogma became a favorite sport for nobles and people alike, alongside horse racing. Clearly, the object of such interest was not the content of theological truth, not its meaning for life, but only the letter of dogma, the technical details of its expression, taken apart from the inward religious facts and demands that they signify. But can dogma itself be blamed for this misuse, for its being turned into an amateur game by minds with no calling to it? Can the absurd wrangling over words by the later scholastics, immortalized in the satire Letters of Obscure Men, serve as an argument against philosophy itself?

[¶2] When Christian dogmas were defined at the ecumenical councils, they were for the Church's true representatives neither the intellectual game that captivated later Byzantines nor the alien and forgotten word they sound like to present-day ears. True dogma is the Church's word answering God's word when such an answer is required by the course of history and the development of religious consciousness. And if God's word itself can be misused by being taken according to the letter that kills and profits nothing, still more is the Church's word subject to such misuse. The root of evil lies solely in the division between letter and spirit, between form and essence. From here two branches of error grow in opposite directions: idolatrous adoration of the letter or outward form apart from its meaning and spirit, and blind denial of the very spirit of truth because of the form, deadened through human fault, which conceals it and has ceased to be intelligible or interesting.

[¶3] Matters were different by the 320s. Having overcome ignorance through the preaching of the apostles and hostile violence through the heroic deeds of the martyrs, and having become the recognized faith of “the inhabited world,” that is, the Roman Empire, Christianity, thus freed from external struggle, had to concentrate on clarifying its truth in precise and distinct definitions. Why? Such definitions are, of course, unnecessary for apostles and martyrs. The truth for which they gave their whole lives was not separate from their very being; their being was wholly animated and permeated by this truth. Out of the fullness of their hearts their mouths spoke and carried away those who heard and saw them. On the other hand, formal definitions of truth are useless for people consciously hostile to it, who reject it in advance. The task of correct and precise definitions is to remove misunderstandings and obscurities, but what use is that for people who, with full clarity and without any misunderstanding, are embittered against truth solely for its inward worth, because it is an expression of goodness? Yet if precise intellectual definition and clarification of truth are unnecessary for the righteous and useless for the evil, they are necessary and useful for all those people in between whom the evil tempt and for whose sake the righteous labor. Intellectual work on truth is not required for the chosen ones of good and evil, but it is required for the multitude called to goodness and distracted by evil. Therefore there is great historical significance in the fact that the period when dogmatic disputes and definitions predominated in the Church's life began precisely in the time of Constantine the Great, when Christianity's official recognition in the Roman Empire brought into it crowds of middling, passive people, a flocklike multitude easily troubled and led astray by all manner of wolves in sheep's clothing. It was then especially that the pastoral, that is, shepherding, office in the Church had to show itself. And it did indeed acquire particular importance.

[¶4] The period from the fourth to the ninth century was the period in which the hierarchy took its final form. All the fundamental truths of Christianity were clarified by the individual labors of chief pastors and decisively defined at their common assemblies, the so-called ecumenical councils. The first of these stands out above all the others because, in many of its members, the chief pastors' significance as leaders of the Church had not yet become separated from that of apostles and martyrs. Some of the bishops who sat at this council were renowned for converting a pagan people to Christianity; others, mutilated, with hollows where their eyes should have been, vividly recalled the recent persecutions for the faith.

[¶5] The importance of this assembly's task was worthy of its membership. From the beginning, representatives of Christianity experienced the Gospel as the absolute and final revelation of truth, as the message of perfect union with the perfect Godhead. If Christ had been only a prophet, or even a superhuman being but lower than God, then this feeling of complete satisfaction, this awareness that what had been revealed was not relative but absolute truth, the perfect meaning and dignity of life, this feeling and awareness of Christians might have been mistaken. Another prophet might have appeared and given other commandments; another godlike being of a still higher order might have become incarnate and revealed other, entirely new tasks for life. What God's word said of Christ was sufficient for true believers, for those “who have the mind of Christ,” but admitted all kinds of tempting reinterpretations by people lacking Christ's mind. A word had to be spoken that logically excluded an understanding of Christ as one of the prophets or one of the aeons. After long discussion and dispute, the Nicene Fathers spoke precisely such a word. Holy Scripture says: Christ, the Son of God, the firstborn from the dead, the only-begotten of the Father. The Arians reinterpreted all this in their own way and deprived Christ and Christianity of absolute significance. “Of one substance with the Father,” proclaimed the Church through the mouths of the 318 Fathers, and here all other reinterpretations of this first, fundamental question of Christian faith had to end. Here there remains only acceptance or rejection, only yes or no. “Of one substance,” that is, of the same being or nature as the Father Almighty, means God by nature, rather than by election and adoption; it means not one of the prophets or aeons, but precisely what all those reborn through him felt in him from the beginning, and what gave each of them, and can give each of us, absolute significance.

[¶6] These words, “of one substance with the Father,” may seem a small thing compared with the fullness of religious life. But the Fathers of the Council of Nicaea proved faithful in a little, and were therefore set over much. The Godhead that has been revealed to us, that is accessible to us and in which we can participate, is the real and perfect Godhead. Consequently, if we desire deification, we can attain it, not approximately and partially, but truly and wholly. This is what the words “of one substance with the Father” mean.

### Author and translator notes

[¶9] Author note 1

The opening of this work appeared in the first three chapters of my Theoretical Philosophy, in Questions of Philosophy and Psychology, 1897, 1898 and 1899.

[¶10] Author note 2

The expression is not mine.

> Russian:

[¶11] Author note 3 Incidentally, hostile exposés of the late H. P. Blavatsky, founder of neo-Buddhism, continue to be attributed to me. I therefore state that I never met her, never investigated or exposed her personality or the phenomena she produced, and never published anything about them. For the Theosophical Society and its teaching, see my entry in Vengerov’s Dictionary and my review of Blavatsky’s Key to the Secret Doctrine in Russian Review.

[¶12] Author note 4

These words, written in October 1899, were borne out a month later by the German-Turkish convention concerning Asia Minor and the Baghdad railway. — V. S.

The name of a Russian sect.

[¶14] Author note 6

The conversation took place in April.

[¶15] Author note 7 The Politician evidently alludes to the subscription in memory of the “suicide” Henry. One French officer subscribed in the hope of a new St. Bartholomew’s Night; another hoped for the speedy hanging of all Protestants, Freemasons and Jews; and an abbot awaited the bright future when cheap carpets would be made from skin flayed from Huguenots, Masons and Jews, so that, as a good Christian, he could continually tread such a carpet underfoot. These statements, among tens of thousands of others of the same kind, were printed in La Libre Parole.

[¶16] Author note 8

See the remarks about this passage in the preface.
