35:1
Ten miracles were performed for our ancestors in the Holy Temple: [The sanctified meat never spoiled;] no woman ever miscarried after smelling the sanctified meat; [(Ten miracles were performed for our ancestors in Jerusalem:) no one was ever injured in Jerusalem;] no one stumbled and fell in Jerusalem; the fires of the altar were never extinguished in Jerusalem; no building ever collapsed in Jerusalem; no one in Jerusalem ever said: I cannot find an oven to cook the Passover offering; no one in Jerusalem ever said: I cannot find [an affordable] bed to sleep in; no one in Jerusalem ever said: This place is too cramped for me to stay in.
35:2
[A house in] Jerusalem cannot contract ritual impurity of leprous marks. Nor can it be judged as a condemned city. Nor can one build ledges, balconies, or water channels in public spaces, because they create an enclosure for (death and) impurity. Nor may a corpse be left there overnight. Nor may human bones be carried through the city. Nor may a stranger be given permanent residence there. Nor may graves be placed there, except for the graves of members of the House of David or the prophetess Hulda, which have been there from the days of the first prophets. (And when they removed all the graves from the city, why were these not removed?) They say there was a grotto there that would take all the impurities out into the Kedron River. One may not plant any plants there. Nor may one make a garden or an orchard there, aside from the rose gardens which have been there since the days of the first prophets. Nor may one raise (geese or) chickens there, let alone pigs. Nor may garbage heaps be established there, because of impurity. A stubborn and rebellious son cannot be judged there, said Rabbi Natan, for it says (Deuteronomy 21:19), “His father and mother shall grab him and take him to the elders of the city, to the gate of his place”; but this is not his city, nor his place. Houses sold there cannot include the land they are on. [Houses cannot be sold as a permanent possession] in the city after twelve months. Rent may not be collected there, except for [the use of] beds and mattresses. Rabbi Yehudah said: even rent for beds and mattresses [was not collected]. What would they do with the skins of the sacrificed animals? They would give them to the owners of guest houses. Rabbi Shimon ben Gamliel said: innkeepers were inside the city, and the owners of guest houses were outside. The innkeepers would buy sheepskins with fine wool for four or five sela and then sell them to the people of Jerusalem, and that is how these homeowners got rich.

One verse says, “In one of your tribes” (Deuteronomy 12:13). Another verse says, “In all of your tribes.” (Deuteronomy 12:14). “In one of your tribes” refers to Judah and Benjamin. “In all of your tribes” refers (to Jerusalem), which belongs to all of Israel. And what was in the territory of Judah? The Temple Mount, the Chambers of Stone, and the outer courts. And what was in the territory of Benjamin? The Temple itself, the Hallway, and the Holy of Holies, and a triangular extension that went around [the space where the altar was built]. Benjamin merited to host God’s Might, as it says, (Deuteronomy 33:12), “And He rests upon his shoulders.”
35:4
Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi said: When I know that the Temple is going to be built again between the territories of Judah and Benjamin, I will go and prepare the fields of Jericho. And who ate the produce of those fields during all those years? The Kenites, the descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, as says (Judges 1:16), “And the Kenites, the descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, went up from the City of Palms.” He also said: When the Holy Blessed One removed His Presence, He promised to give a great reward in the future to Jethro and his descendants. [How do we know] that the descendants of Jethro were supported from charity in the meantime? Because of what it says (I Chronicles 2:55), “The families of the tribes that dwelled at Jabez,” and then (I Chronicles 4:23), “They were the potters, who dwelled in the plantations.” (They were great men, owners of houses, fields, and vineyards. And because of the work of the King of all kings, the Holy Blessed One, they dwelled there) in the king’s service. So then where did they go? They went to Jabez to study Torah, and there they became a people of God. (At that time) Jabez was a good and righteous man, a man of truth and piety, and he would sit and teach Torah, as it says (I Chronicles 4:10), “And Jabez called out to the God of Israel, saying [if You bless me…and God granted his request].”

35:5
Ten miracles were performed for our ancestors in the Holy Temple: 1. Flies were never seen in the slaughterhouse. 2. No high priest ever had an emission on Yom Kippur – except for Rabbi Yishmael ben Kimkhit, who went out to speak with a certain official, and some saliva came out of [the official’s] mouth and fell on the clothes [of Rabbi Yishmael], and so his brother went in to serve as the high priest in his place. So his mother was able to see two of her sons serve as the high priest on the same day. The sages saw her and asked her, “How did you merit this honor?” She replied, “Because the walls of my house never saw my hair uncovered.” (3. No one in Jerusalem was ever hurt, and no one was ever injured, or stumbled and fell, in the Holy Temple.) 4. No woman ever miscarried after smelling the sanctified meat. 5. The priests never disqualified the holy offerings. And when they ate the holy meat, they would drink from the waters of the Shiloach and it would digest in their stomachs like regular food.
35:6
6. There was never a defect in the omer offering, or in the two loaves, or in the showbread.
35:7
7. A clay vessel that shattered would be immediately absorbed back into the ground. 8. The wind never disturbed the pillar of cloud (of incense). 9. When [the pillar of cloud] came out of the altar, [the smoke from the offering would] shoot straight up like a staff until it reached the sky [and when the smoke from the incense would come out of the golden altar, it would wind its way into the Holy of Holies].
35:8
10. Though people would stand tightly packed together, when they bowed there was plenty of space. For when Israel went up to worship their Father in heaven, when they sat down, they would be so crowded together that no one could fit a finger between them. [But when they would bow, there was plenty of space.]) But the greatest miracle of them all was that if even a hundred people bowed at the same time, the sexton of the congregation would never have to make an announcement telling people to make space for one another. (Miracles were also performed in the courtyard, for even if all of Israel entered into the courtyard, it could contain them all.) But an even greater miracle was that when all of Israel would stand so packed together during prayer that no one could fit a finger between them, when they would bow down, a space was created between each of them as wide as the height of a person.
35:9
Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel would say: In the future, all the nations and all the kingdoms will gather together in Jerusalem, as it says (Jeremiah 3:17), “And all the nations will assemble there in the name of the Eternal,” and it says (Genesis 1:9), “Let the waters be assembled.” Just as [there the assembly of] all the waters in Creation were in one place, so too, the assembly here is a gathering of all the nations and kingdoms into Jerusalem, as it says, “And all the nations will assemble there.”
