36:1
The men of Sodom will not be granted eternal life, and will not even be given a trial, as it says (Genesis 13:13), “And the men of Sodom were [very] wicked and sinful [against the Eternal].” “Wicked” – with one another; “and sinful” – through sexual transgression. “Against the Eternal” – by desecrating God’s name; “very” – for they were very intent on sinning. These are the words of Rabbi Akiva. But Rabbi Yehoshua said: They will be given a trial! As it says (Psalms 1:5), “(Therefore the wicked will not survive judgment,) nor will sinners, in the assembly of the righteous.” That is, they will not stand in the assembly of the righteous, but they will stand in the assembly of the wicked. But Rabbi Nehemiah said: They will not make it to the assembly of the wicked. As it says (Psalms 104:35), “May sinners disappear from the earth, and the wicked be no more.” The minor children of the wicked will not be granted eternal life, and will not even be given a trial, as it says (Malachi 3:19), “For behold, the day is coming that will burn like a furnace [and all the arrogant and the doers of evil will be like straw, and when that day comes, says the Eternal, Master of Legions, it will burn them to ashes and leave no root or branch].” These are the words of Rabbi Akiva. But Rabbi Yehoshua said: They will be given a trial! It is about them that the verse says (Daniel 4:11), “He called loudly and said, Cut down the tree, chop off its branches, strip off its foliage, and scatter its fruit.” And then it says (Daniel 4:12), “But leave the stump with its roots in the ground in fetters of iron and bronze.” Both the verses in Malachi and in Daniel mention roots. Just as the roots in the later passage refer to their bodies, so too do the roots in the earlier passage refer to the human body. If so, how do I interpret the words (from Malachi 3:19), “It will…leave no root or branch”? That they will have no merit on which they can depend. Others agree that they will be given a trial, but say that the verse which speaks of them is (Isaiah 44:5), “This one will say, I am for the Eternal! and that one will use the name Jacob; another one will write For the Eternal on his arm, and take on the name Israel. “This one will say, I am for the Eternal!” – those are the totally righteous. “That one will use the name Jacob” – those are the minor children of the wicked. “Another one will write For the Eternal on his arm” – these are the wicked who cease their evil ways and repent and return to the good. “And take on the name Israel” – these are the converts from all the nations of the world.

Korah and his company will not be granted eternal life, and will not even be given a trial, as it says (Numbers 16:33), “The earth closed over them, and they vanished from the midst of the congregation.” These are the words of Rabbi Eliezer. But Rabbi Yehoshua said: They will be given a trial! It is about them that the verses speak (I Samuel 2:6), “The Eternal deals death and gives life, casts down into Sheol and raises up.” The verse there (Numbers 16:33) speaks of Sheol: “They went down alive into Sheol, with all that belonged to them.” And the verse (in I Samuel) speaks of Sheol. So just as later one can be cast down into Sheol or raised up from it, so too, when Sheol is mentioned here, they go down into it, but will one day be raised up from it. Rabbi Eliezer said: Then how do you interpret the verse, “The earth closed over them, and they vanished from the midst of the congregation”? [Rabbi Yehoshua] responded: They vanished from the midst of the congregation, but they did not vanish from the World to Come.

The generation of the desert will not be granted eternal life, and will not even be given a trial, as it says (Numbers 14:35), “In this very desert they will die, there they will perish.” And it also says (Psalms 95:11), “Those who I swore, in My anger, would never come to My resting place.” These are the words of Rabbi Eliezer. But Rabbi Yehoshua said: They will be given a trial! It is about them that the verses speak (Psalms 50:5), “Gather to Me My devotees, who made a covenant with Me over sacrifice.” [Rabbi Eliezer] said to him: Accept my interpretation. For if not, how can you explain the words, “Those who I swore, in my anger”? [Rabbi Yehoshua] replied: These are the spies, and (all) the wicked people of that generation. Then Rabbi Yehoshua asked: So what do you do with the verse, “Gather to Me My devotees”? [Rabbi Eliezer] said to him: That refers to Moses and Aaron, and all the devotees of that generation from the Tribe of Levi. Others responded: [But in Numbers 14:35, above,] how do you know the word “there” is referring only to the wicked, and not to the righteous? Didn’t it already say (Genesis 49:31), “There they buried Abraham, and Sarah his wife”? And it also says (Genesis 50:5), “In my grave, which I prepared for myself in the land of Canaan, there shall you bury me.” And it also says (Numbers 20:1), “And Miriam died there, and was buried there.” [And what’s more (Numbers 33:38), “Aaron the priest went up…and died there.”] And it also says (Deuteronomy 34:5), “And Moses, the servant of the Eternal, died there in the land of Moab, by the word of the Eternal.” Rabbi Yosei HaGalili said: They will not be given a trial! For it says (Numbers 14:35), “In this very desert they will die, there they will perish.” And it also says (Deuteronomy 21:4), “There, by the stream, they shall break the calf’s neck.” Just as we have the word “there” in the case of the calf whose neck is broken, which dies and never leaves that place, so too, the word “there” in the case of those who died in the desert indicates that they will die and never leave that place. (And others say: They will be given a trial! It is about them that the verse speaks (Jeremiah 2:2): “Go and call to the ears of Jerusalem and say…[I will remember as a kindness the devotion of your youth].”)

Ten of the tribes will not be granted eternal life, and will not even be given a trial, for it says (Deuteronomy 29:27), “The Eternal plucked them up from the ground [and cast them into another land, where they remain to this day].” Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai says: Just as “this day” on which they have rebelled passes and will never return, so will they never return. But Rabbi Akiva says: Just as “this day” is dark and then gets lighter, so will their darkness one day become lighter. (Rabbi Gamliel says: See, it says (Deuteronomy 11:21), “In order that you and your children will endure.” And it also says (Deuteronomy 24:16), “Parents shall not be put to death for their children.” So when the parent’s life extends, so does the child’s. [But when the parent’s life does not extent, neither does the child’s.] Rabbi Yosei HaGalili supports the position of Rabbi Eliezer, and Rabbi Gamliel supports the position of Rabbi Yehoshua.

These seven have no share in the World to Come: the scribe, the schoolteacher, the best doctors, the city judge, the magician, the sexton, and the butcher.

Three kings and four commoners have no share in the World to Come. The three kings are: Jeroboam, Ahab, and Menashe. The four commoners are: Bil’am, Doeg, Ahitophel, and Gehazi. Rabbi Yehudah would say: Menashe already repented, as it says (II Chronicles 33:13), “And he prayed to God, and God granted his prayer….” They replied: If that verse had [continued] only with, “…and returned him to Jerusalem,” and stopped, we would have [said] exactly what you said. But because it continues and says, “…and to his kingship,” that means he was returned to his kingdom and not returned to the World to Come. Rabbi Meir would say: Absalom has no share in the World to Come. Rabbi Yohanan ben Guri said: Even one who pronounces God’s name as it is written has no share in the World to Come. He would also say: One who sings Song of Songs with a vibrato has no share in the World to Come. (One who whispers incantations over a wound,) one who spits into a wound, or chants over a wound, “I will no longer afflict you with all the diseases that I put upon you in Egypt,” does not have a share in the World to Come. The sages would say: Any Torah scholar who stops learning has no share in the World to Come, as it says (Numbers 15:31), “Because he has spurned the word of the Eternal.” And it also says (Jeremiah 2:5), “What wrong did your ancestors find in Me that caused them to distance themselves from Me? Rabbi Meir would say: Anyone who has a study hall in his city and never goes there has no share in the World to Come. Rabbi Akiva would say: Even someone who does not serve the scholars has no share in the World to Come.
