I assume here that the external facts of Marx's biography are known; my concern is psychological rather than biographical.
On the first page of Volume I of Capital, see Marx's attack on his collaborator and friend, who had moreover long been dead: instead of giving Lassalle his due, Marx merely accuses him, albeit in convoluted terms, of plagiarizing Marx's work.
Here are some examples by way of illustration: "One of the virtuosos of this pretentious cretinism, McCulloch... speaks with the affected naivety of an eight-year-old child" (Capital, Vol. I, p. 363, note 216). In the notes to Capital, epithets such as "vulgar," "absurd," and the like occur at every turn. This bad tone has unfortunately been adopted by Marx's followers as well and, in particular, has taken root in our literature.
The first edition of Volume I of Capital contained a crude and tasteless attack on Herzen, which the author himself subsequently removed from later editions.
In his book Die Grundlagen der Karl Marx'schen Kritik der bestehenden Volkswirtschaft (Tübingen, 1887), Georg Adler quotes an interesting passage from a letter by the democrat Trekhov, who visited Marx in London. Among other things, Trekhov sets out his personal impressions of him: "Marx impressed me not only with his rare intellectual superiority but also with his remarkable personality. If he had as much heart as intellect, as much love as hatred, I would be ready to go through fire for him, even though he not only made me feel his utter contempt for me in various ways but eventually expressed it openly. He is the first and only one among us to whom I would entrust the right to govern without losing himself in trifles amid momentous events. It is only for the sake of our common goal that I regret that this man, alongside his outstanding intellect, does not possess a noble heart. He laughs at the fools who piously repeat the proletarian catechism after him, as he does at communists à la Willich and at the bourgeois. The only people he respects are aristocrats, true aristocrats who are fully conscious of being so. To remove them from power, he needs a force that he finds only in the proletarians, and so he has tailored his system to them. Despite all his assurances to the contrary, perhaps precisely because of them, I gained the impression that his personal domination is the goal of all his actions" (p. 283, note). Of course, we do not mean to take what is said here à la lettre, but its general tone accords with what both Annenkov and Herzen report.

Among other things, Professor Masaryk deserves credit for drawing attention to this connection in chapter XI of his well-known book on Marxism.
XI.
For example, even a scholar such as Professor Masaryk, who has studied the literature on the subject so carefully and extensively, also affirms in his book (Die philosophischen und soziologischen Grundlagen des Marxismus. Wien, 1899) that "Marx's socialism grew chiefly out of German philosophy," that "Marx's philosophical basis, his philosophical skeleton, so to speak, is Hegel's philosophy; Hegel formed Marx's mind," and, finally, that "Marx made his literary debut as a Hegelian, an adherent of Feuerbach" (p. 22 and passim). Yet if we consider that although Feuerbach himself was once an adherent of Hegel, he subsequently became his bitter and irreconcilable philosophical opposite, we shall understand the regrettable philosophical confusion contained in these words: a Hegelian, an adherent of Feuerbach. This is almost the same as saying: a Marxist, a follower of Tolstoy, or something of the kind.
22 и passim).
Aus dem litterarischen Nachlass von Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels und Ferdinand Lassalle. Edited by Franz Mehring. Volume One: Collected Writings of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels from March 1841 to March 1844. Volume Two: Collected Writings of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels from July 1844 to November 1847. Mehring supplies commentaries on these articles, into which, despite their inevitable tendentiousness, he has put a great deal of work and learning.
Aus dem litterarischen Nachlass von Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels und Ferdinand Lassalle. Herausgeber von Franz Mehring. Erster Band. Gesammelte Schriften von Karl Marx und Friedrich Engels von März 1841 bis März 1844. Zweiter Band. Gesammelte Schriften von Karl Marx und Friedrich Engels von Juli 1844 bis November 1847.
Those wishing to check the accuracy of these words can easily do so using the bibliographical index appended to the translation of Volume I of Capital edited by Struve. It makes clear how superficially and incidentally Marx quotes Hegel, seemingly more for the sake of mentioning his name than for the substance of the matter.
Marx attended lectures on the Pandects with Savigny; on criminal law and Prussian local law with Gans; on canon law with Heffter; on criminal procedure together with ordinary German civil procedure with Rudolf Erbrecht; and, in addition, lectures in philosophy, theology, philology, logic with Gabler, Isaiah with Bruno Bauer, Euripides with Gennert, general geography with Ritter, and, finally, anthropology with Steffens.
Even Mehring, who tries to take every word of this letter literally, doubts that the manuscript ran to 300 sheets and supposes that there is a slip of the pen or an error here.

In the same journal, Engels, too, appears as a follower of Feuerbach in his article "Die Lage Englands" (written in response to Carlyle's Past and Present). Here we read: "Until now, the question has always been: what is God? German philosophy (that is, once again, only Feuerbach. — Author) has answered it in this sense: God is man. Man need only know himself, measure all the circumstances of his life by himself, judge them in accordance with his essence, and give the world a truly human order in accordance with the requirements of his nature; then he solves the problem of the age. Truth is to be sought not in otherworldly, nonexistent realms, not outside space and time, not in a 'God' who lives within or stands opposed to the world, but much closer, in man's own breast. Man's own essence is more exalted and more majestic than the essence of all possible 'gods,' who are themselves merely the more or less obscure and distorted essence of man."
Marx's article "On the Jewish Question" from the Deutsch-Französische Jahrbücher, as well as the chapter on the Jewish question from Die heilige Familie, have been translated into Russian, unfortunately not entirely satisfactorily: Karl Marx, On the Jewish Question. St. Petersburg, 1906. Molot Publishing House. Translated by G. Radomysl'sky, edited by A. Lunacharsky.
It is curious that F. Lassalle, too, who in his adolescence dreamed of fighting for the rights of his people (in his diary), reveals in his later letters to Solntseva an extremely negative attitude toward his own people, despite all his nationalism where Germany was concerned. We merely note this psychological enigma without examining it more closely here.

I believe that the last word on it is still far from having been said, for it poses a problem of enormous importance for religious and philosophical thought.
It is noteworthy that even in the polemical work against Dühring, which is certainly not a philosophical work of the first rank, Marx wrote only the chapter on economics; all the philosophical chapters were written by Engels.
Capital, Vol. I, translation edited by Struve, p. 41.

Ibid. In Volume I of Capital, the possibility is admitted not only of explaining existing religious conceptions in terms of life, but also of constructing them deductively, a priori, from the facts of reality. Here is the passage: "Technology reveals man's active relation to nature, the immediate process by which he produces his life, and with it his social relations and the ideas arising from them. Even a history of religion that does not take this material basis into account lacks a critical foundation. Of course, it is much easier, by analysis, to discover the earthly essence of religious conceptions than to do the reverse, that is, to derive their religious forms from the given real relations. The latter method is the only materialist method, and therefore the only scientific one" (p. 300, note 89). It would have been better if Marx had demonstrated this "materialist" method, which in our view is simply fantastical, in practice, instead of merely discussing it in a footnote, the most suitable place for such scientific "discoveries"!
