G. Socialism and the theological judgment of Marx

Let us touch in conclusion on the peculiar imprint that socialism received from Marx. And here we must state that the most profound, defining influence of Marx on the socialist movement in Germany, and later in other countries, manifested itself not so much in his political and economic program as in the general religious-philosophical character. The Social-Democratic Party, or, more generally, the political form of the workers' movement in Germany, was created not by Marx—who, properly speaking, was responsible for the unsuccessful attempt to divert it onto the false path of international organization (which the Communist Manifesto also advocates)—but by Lassalle, who founded the workers' party and firmly set it on the rails. Its further development and fate were determined by the specific conditions of the Prusso-German regime and subsequent historical events, but by no means by the influence of Marx. True, through his economic works Marx determined the worldview of Social-Democratic theoreticians and through them the official credo of the party. However, this theoretical credo is by no means so inseparably bound to the actual program, which is not theoretical Marxism but the so-called minimum program, more or less common to all democratic parties regardless of their relation to Marx. The tangible influence of Marxism makes itself felt here only in that its dogma still binds the party's feet in the agrarian question, and even here the urgent demands of life compel it finally to disregard this dogma, as the Russian Social-Democrats have already done and as the Germans are doing. Moreover, for any economist it must be obvious how far the purely economic doctrine of Marx has already fallen behind developments in life and social science simply through the passage of time; revealing ever new defects and simply becoming outdated, it increasingly becomes a matter of purely historical interest, retreating to the icon-shelf of the history of political economy, where Marx's name, of course, must be numbered among the honored names of Quesnay, Smith, Ricardo, List, Rodbertus, and other creators of political economy.

Thus, however risky such an assertion may be and however much it contradicts the prevailing opinion, we nevertheless consider it highly probable that even without Marx the workers' movement would have been cast into its present political form, and a Social-Democratic workers' party would have been created with approximately the same program and tactics as the existing one. But Marx impressed upon it the indelible seal of his spirit (and consequently of that spirit of which he himself was the instrument) in the philosophical-religious sphere, and through Marx, Feuerbach did so as well. The general conception of socialism worked out by Marx is, of course, permeated with this spirit and responds to the needs of militant atheism; he gave it that tone which, as the saying goes, makes the music, turning socialism into a means of struggle against religion. However clear the general historical tasks of socialism may appear, the concrete forms of the socialist movement, we know, can differ greatly in their spiritual content and ethical value. It can be animated by a high, purely religious enthusiasm, insofar as socialism seeks the realization of truth, justice, and love in social relations, but it can be distinguished by the predominance of feelings of another, not so high an order: class hatred, egoism, the very same bourgeois spirit—only inside out—in a word, those feelings which in the form of the class standpoint and class interests play so dominant a role in the preaching of Marxism. Indignation against evil is, of course, a high and even holy feeling, which no living person or social activist can do without, yet there is a fine, almost imperceptible, and nevertheless supremely real boundary, beyond which this holy feeling turns into something not at all holy; we understand all the ease, naturalness, even imperceptibility of such a transformation, but the predominance of feelings of one order or another determines the spiritual physiognomy of both the person and the movement, although in our practical age it is not customary to take interest in the inner side unless it has immediate practical significance.

Marx's entire doctrine flowed from his fundamental religious motif, his militant atheism: economic materialism, the preaching of class hostility à outrance, the denial of universal human values and universally binding norms beyond the limits of class interest, and, finally, the teaching about the unbridgeable abyss separating two worlds—the proletariat invested with a higher mission and the "general reactionary mass" of its oppressors. All these teachings could, of course, only coarsen the socialist movement, make it more earthbound, give it a more prosaic and economic character, and make the notes of class hatred louder in it than the notes of love for all humanity. We by no means attribute the introduction of this coloring into the movement to the influence of Marx alone; on the contrary, this spiritual temptation for the socialist movement is too great even without him and, of course, has found many paths in the past and continues to find them now (including here in Russia), but Marx was its mighty instrument. The personal influence of Marx in the socialist movement was reflected above all precisely in the strengthening of that anti-religious, God-defying element which rages in it, as in all our culture, and which will not say its last word without receiving its adequate, though final, embodiment.

With great wisdom and deep understanding of the true character of the anti-religious element striving to seize the socialist movement and seduce it, Vladimir Solovyov in his tale of the Antichrist depicts him, among other things, as a social reformer, a socialist.

And in socialism, as throughout our culture, the struggle between Christ and Antichrist goes on...

"Thy Kingdom come! Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven!" Such is our prayer.

Such too is the ultimate goal of the cosmic and historical process. Such must be the highest and sole criterion for evaluating human deeds, assigning them a plus or a minus in creation, giving them an absolute and final, that is, religious coefficient. Have we employed the powers granted us by God for the building of the Kingdom of God, which it is given to us not only to await but also, to the extent of our strength, to prepare, even if only as the lowliest and most insignificant masons—in this work there is nothing insignificant—or have we squandered these powers in vain, in shameful idleness and sloth, or, finally, have we employed them for work "in one's own name," alien and hostile to the purposes of the Kingdom of God? In the life and activity of each person, in various combinations, there are elements of all these three categories, and no one will dare to strike an overall balance and pronounce the final verdict upon his neighbor: he is an enemy of God's work! But this impossibility of making a final evaluation—an evaluation that belongs only to the righteous judgment of God—in no way frees us from the duty to peer into life with a searching gaze, where evil wages, as we know, an irreconcilable struggle with good and, what is most dangerous, in this struggle sometimes appears even under the mask of good, distinguished from it not by external but only by internal signs. And, faithful to this demand, though by no means daring to draw an overall conclusion, we must distinguish in Marx too, alongside the work of the Lord, energy of an entirely different order, ominous and dangerous—he presents a mysterious and terrible duality. The socialist activity of Marx as one of the leaders of a movement directed toward the defense of the dispossessed in capitalist society and toward the transformation of the social order on the principles of justice, equality, and freedom, in terms of its objective aims, it would seem, must be recognized as work for the building of the Kingdom of God. But the fact that he wanted to make this movement a means for destroying what is sacred in man and setting himself in its place, and was guided by this aim in his activity, must from a religious point of view receive a negative evaluation; here we have precisely that subtle and most dangerous temptation, when good and evil differ not outwardly but inwardly. Which weighs more here—the plus or the minus—we shall learn only when our own balance too has been struck, and we ourselves must leave the question open. However, to state here what, after many years of intense scrutiny of Marx’s spiritual countenance, we saw in him and what many others do not see, we considered our moral duty, a matter of conscience, however it may be received by those to whom precisely this dark, shadowy side of Marx's spirit is congenial.
