I said to her: your face has appeared,

But I wish to see the whole of you.

What you freely gave to a child

You surely cannot refuse a young man.

The answer was a summons to Egypt, where the third meeting took place in the desert, described in these terms: having arrived in Egypt,

Meanwhile I awaited the cherished meeting,

And once, in the quiet hour of night,

Like the cool breath of a breeze:

“I am in the desert; follow me there.”

There follows a humorous description of the journey into the desert, at which “you must have laughed”, as did the author with her:

I laugh with you: gods and men alike

Laugh at troubles once they are past.

Night in the desert. Cold and stars, in a struggle against sleep.

And long I lay in eerie drowsiness,

And then a breath stirred: “Sleep, my poor friend!”

And I fell asleep; when I awoke alert,

The earth and vault of heaven breathed of roses.

And in the purple of heavenly radiance,

With eyes filled with azure fire,

You gazed, like the first shining

Of the day of universal creation.

What is, what was, what shall ever come:

One motionless gaze embraced it all...

Seas and rivers gleam blue beneath me,

And a distant forest, and the heights of snowy mountains.

I saw everything, and everything was but one thing,

One image alone of feminine beauty...

The immeasurable was contained within its measure:

Before me, within me, you alone.

Oh, radiant one! You have not deceived me:

I saw the whole of you in the desert...

Those roses will not fade in my soul,

Wherever the surge of life may carry me.

A single moment! The vision vanished,

And the orb of the sun rose into the sky.

Silence in the desert. My soul prayed,

And within it the peal of good tidings never ceased.

The poem ends with another address to her:

Eternal companion, I shall not name you,

And forgive my faltering melody.

It is fitting to ask what further naming of the “eternal companion” can be at issue once all her distinguishing features have been given, her complete mystical passport revealed. If this name is Sophia, the Wisdom of God, Solovyov names her dozens of times in his works; besides, is this even a name? Or, alongside it, is there also a proper, personal name of the female figure described, which can either be named or left unnamed? The perplexed question remains unanswered; Schmidt, however, answers it in her own way: this name is “Anna Margarita”.

“Three Encounters” gives the most explicit account, admitting of no reinterpretation, of the special, personal character of Vladimir Solovyov’s relationship with Eternal Femininity, which for him took on the features of a hypostatic woman. We find repeated testimony to this in a number of his poems. In view of the importance of the question, we shall quote the most important of them in full or in extracts.

One of the foremost places here belongs to a poem recently published (in the sixth edition of the poems), evidently an early one (from the late 1870s?).

Near, far, neither here nor there,

In the kingdom of mystical dreams,
