In a world invisible to mortal eyes,
In a world without laughter or tears,
There, goddess, I first came to know you
On a misty night.
I was a strange child then.
I dreamt strange dreams.
You appeared in a wondrous form,
Your voice sounded indistinctly,
As the vague consciousness of a childhood dream
I long regarded you.
Now you appear to me again
With the tenderness of unexpected love;
I see you now no longer in a dream,
Your words are clear to me.
To me, deafened in an alien world
By the clamour of unintelligible speech,
There suddenly sounded in your greeting
A word from my homeland.
The voice of my homeland in your magical words,
In the light of azure eyes,
A gleam of my homeland in ethereal rays,
In the gold of wondrous curls.
All that sustains my heart and mind,
All that trembles in my breast,
All the powers of feeling, desire and thought
I have given into your hands.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
I am altar, sacrifice and priest;
With the anguish of bliss I stand before you.
What “goddess” is meant here, and what “homeland”? Perhaps the poems about the “queen” (also from the 1870s) will shed some further light. In the first, shorter poem, we hear a recollection of the meeting in Egypt.
All in azure today appeared
Before me my queen;
My heart beat with sweet rapture,
And in the rays of the dawning day
My soul shone with a quiet light,
While in the distance, burning out, there smouldered
The evil flame of earthly fire.
And this is what this “queen” is like:
My queen has a lofty palace,
It stands upon seven golden pillars;
My queen has a seven-sided crown,
In it are countless precious stones.
Is it not clear that this is a direct paraphrase of the biblical text concerning the Wisdom of God: “Wisdom has built herself a house and established seven pillars” (Proverbs 9:1)? This symbolism is also adopted in iconography, specifically in the Kiev Sophia. The continuation, and especially the conclusion, of this poem therefore becomes all the more instructive:
And in my queen’s green garden
