II. THE PHILOSOPHY OF PRINCE S. N. TRUBETSKOY AND THE SPIRITUAL STRUGGLE OF OUR TIME
II. Н.
(On the Collected Works of Prince Sergei Nikolaevich Trubetskoy)
The appearance of the Complete Collected Works of Prince S. N. Trubetskoy constitutes an important event in the history of philosophical enlightenment in Russia. In it our society receives, in concentrated and even excessively compressed form, a whole wealth of philosophical ideas and motifs, deeply thought through and inwardly experienced, not only capable of providing material for a philosophical education, but also, and far more importantly, containing the most fruitful beginnings for further development. In his outline of Prince S. N. Trubetskoy’s philosophical worldview, Professor L. M. Lopatin bitterly remarks upon the sad fate of Russian philosophers, a fate connected with the peculiarities of our life and partly with those of our national genius: namely, that, profoundly absorbed in the search for truth, they do not manage to give their ideas a finished, systematic elaboration, as the average German professor of philosophy does; and this has to be said of the most original Russian thinkers, equally of Khomyakov, Kireyevsky and the other Slavophiles and of Vl. Solovyov and his friend and philosophical ally Prince S. N. Trubetskoy; although of them all the latter possessed to the greatest degree the qualities of a scholarly researcher and systematiser, and was generally the most thoroughly a “professor” in the good sense of the word, and although two finished philosophical “dissertations” belong to his pen, Prince S. N. Trubetskoy’s philosophical and theological teaching, and he undoubtedly had an original system of his own, which might have been expounded in a long series of volumes, “von Buch zu Buch”, has the character of a sketch, and this makes even its understanding difficult, especially for the ill-prepared reader. Certain trains of thought have rather to be divined, although it is clear that they have been followed to the end in the author’s mind; reconstructions, commentaries or popular exposition are needed.
Of the entire Collected Works, the philosophical articles in the second volume, published at various times in Questions of Philosophy and Psychology, possess the greatest, fundamental importance, above all the extensive articles “On the Nature of Human Consciousness” (1890) and “The Foundations of Idealism” (1896). These articles provide the key to understanding all S. N.’s scholarly and philosophical activity and reveal its central nerve. Taking them as our point of departure, it is easy to understand why he had to write both The Metaphysics of Ancient Greece and The Doctrine of the Logos, a series of articles of a general philosophical character (“Ethics and Dogmatics” and “Faith in Immortality” are especially important), studies in the history of religion and ancient philosophy, and studies of Pythagoras and Hegel, and what unifying worldview directed this scholarly inquisitiveness. And it is interesting to note, in the writings of Prince S. N. Trubetskoy, who devoted himself mainly to publicistic writing in his last years, that revaluation of values which history effects even over a few years: the political and publicistic articles in the first volume have already lost a considerable part of their interest, although, bearing witness to their author’s lively responsiveness to current life, they attracted attention when they appeared and were the only writings of his known to the general public; whereas his philosophical and theological works, devoted to the concerns of eternity and gilded by its dawn, seem to become more valuable, fresher, more significant and more necessary than at the time of the author’s relative youth, when they were written.
We consider an attempt to set out Prince S. N. Trubetskoy’s philosophical worldview in a short note entirely impracticable. Its task can consist only in encouraging direct acquaintance with it, arousing interest in it, indicating some of its fundamental motifs and connecting them with those values and problems over which an especially heated spiritual struggle is taking place in our time. The description “scholastic”, that is, abstract, self-enclosed thought, is the least applicable of all to Prince S. N. Trubetskoy’s philosophy; what is at issue here is not abstract thought but spiritual life and its burning needs: faith, knowledge, action.
The worldview of Prince S. N. Trubetskoy, like that of V. S. Solovyov, whom he approaches while nevertheless retaining complete independence of him in its development and grounding, is distinguished by a broad, synthesising character. The history of philosophy, whose significance he valued so highly and interpreted so profoundly, did not pass over him without leaving its mark. In his worldview we find a wealth of diverse philosophical motifs from the ancient and modern, Eastern and Western worlds, transformed into an organic unity. Able to show the relative and limited truth of manifestly one-sided doctrines which emerged with dialectical necessity in the history of philosophy, the thinker thereby had to rise above them and regard them from a more general and broader point of view. Against positivism and empiricism he defended the rights of speculative thought, but against the universal claims of Hegelian panlogism he defended empirical science, scientific positivism; finally, against both together he upheld the independent significance of faith or immediate, “mystical” intuition as a particular factor in cognition, while nevertheless disputing the legitimacy of replacing thought and knowledge by mystical inward absorption alone. In The Foundations of Idealism three stages of idealism are investigated: being as “that which appears”, that is, an appearance entering into the composition of “experience” (in the Kantian sense of the word), “as idea” and “as object of faith”.
“The source of our knowledge of being lies in the concrete activity of our spiritual consciousness, of our feeling, thinking, willing spirit, and it cannot be sought in any one of its faculties without entering into contradiction with the others, without entering into contradictions with the very facts of cognition... Empiricism, rationalism and mysticism appear to us as conditional, partly artificial points of view... Such abstraction is inevitable and legitimate as the only possible experiment in the realm of ontology and the theory of knowledge... But we must remember the conditional character of this mode of cognition and the inevitable abstractness of its result” (Collected Works, III, 260–262).
Thus the epistemology of Prince S. N. Trubetskoy (like that of Vl. Solovyov) is constructed upon a combination of three principles which in the history of philosophy are frequently recognised as mutually exclusive and hostile.
For all the fruitfulness of this formulation of the epistemological problem, which frees it from one-sidedness, the question of the independent significance of the mystical path of cognition, which Prince S. N. Trubetskoy studies only on the basis of the testimony of Buddhist mysticism and the medieval, pre-Reformation pantheistic mysticism of Meister Eckhart and Sebastian Franck, while altogether unjustifiably ignoring the works of Orthodox patristic literature, remains insufficiently investigated even by him, a task left to those who will continue his work. Orthodox mysticism in general still remains an entirely untouched field for epistemological investigation, which is, of course, inseparably connected with religious philosophy.
Prince S. N. Trubetskoy openly builds his epistemology upon ontological presuppositions; more precisely, his epistemological analysis leads him with an inner necessity to a realist ontology and is bound up with it. He struggles against the latest “illusionism”, that expression of the “Protestant principle of the absolutism of personality”, in which “German idealism has met with English empiricism” (III,. 5–7). Against subjective idealism he sets a realist ontology, from whose standpoint cognition is a real going out of oneself, a sensing of oneself in connection with everything. In this sense “nature too forms part of our sentient organisation” (III, 270), and consequently the criterion of our knowledge also consists “in the correlation of our knowing subject with the entire totality of knowable being”: “consciousness is wholly conditioned by the real metaphysical correlativity of beings” or by “the internal correlation of things, at the foundation of which lies the absolute all-unity of being” (III, 266–267).
At the basis of cognition lies the universal correlativity of all that exists, including subject and object, consciousness and things.
“There is no thought, experience, feeling, perception, representation or concept without relation”, there are no things in themselves, nor is there a relationless sphere of consciousness”. “Consciousness is immanent: it exists in the subject and for the subject; and at the same time it is transcendent, in so far as it contains within itself a relation to objects distinct from it” (364–365).
Following V. S. Solovyov, who here also continues in part the best traditions of German metaphysics, our philosopher strives to tear apart, and in our conviction quite successfully, that epistemological cobweb which present-day neo-Kantian philosophy spins with such industry, veiling with it the world of being, the “things in themselves”, from the subject. The struggle for realism (critical realism, of course) against transcendental “idealism”, which frequently constitutes a mask for scepticism, agnosticism or simply positivism, is increasingly becoming the fundamental content of the philosophy of modern times; it is the epistemological and metaphysical expression of the fundamental religious antithesis between man-godhood, with its meonic emptiness of illusionism and its claim to create a world, if only one of “appearances”, out of subjective content, and God-humanity, with the deified, real, living flesh of the world: a philosophical struggle for the world and for life against the spirit of negation and doubt. Prince S. N. Trubetskoy was filled with the ardour of this struggle.
As early as 1890, in the article “On the Nature of Human Consciousness”, he wrote the following significant lines on neo-Kantianism:
“Kant still has the greatest, an innumerable multitude of followers in the persons of the neo-Kantians, whose doctrine now predominates above all others in the universities and on the book market. This is the metaphysics of empiricism, transcendental scepticism with very distinctive features. In many respects this doctrine differs profoundly from Kant’s philosophy. For whereas Kant’s original teaching contained the germ of all subsequent philosophical constructions, neo-Kantianism is Kantianism without Kant, an emasculated criticism from which all living, fruitful shoots have been removed. Here the return to Kant signifies the rejection of all doctrines proceeding from Kant, and consequently of all the fruitful metaphysical elements with which his system overflowed” (42).
One should not think, however, that he himself remained untouched by criticism. The entire worldview of S. N. himself, however much it differs in its conclusions from patented Kantianism, has nevertheless been passed through the purifying crucible of Kant’s critique: he profoundly revered Kant as having made an epoch in philosophy with his critique of knowledge.
“Kant’s great discovery consisted in his recognising all appearances, just as much as the very ideas and necessary ideals of human reason, as conditioned a priori by transcendental consciousness. His error consisted in confusing this transcendental consciousness with the subjective” (III, 57).
On the basis of the assertion that the forms of everything sensible, space and time, are a priori and transcendent, and that the causal connection of things and certain other forms of objective being are likewise a priori forms or categories of this consciousness, one must conclude that “there is, consequently, a transcendental sensibility and a transcendental consciousness conditioning the world. This is Kant’s positive, immortal discovery, which is slowly but firmly winning general recognition and which was destined to effect a radical reform of philosophy” (III, 56,170).
In his polemic with Chicherin, S. N. speaks more definitely, saying outright that the subject of transcendental sensibility is the World Soul, of which Plato already taught. This doctrine, regrettably altogether underdeveloped, seems to us extraordinarily interesting as an original interpretation of Kant, and significant and fruitful for metaphysics. The transcendental logical consciousness conditioning the world likewise cannot be merely subjective. The logical principle conditioning cognition has force not only within us but also outside us: it is an objective principle. The Logos is a principle of the world. Without this our cognition “would be spectral and imaginary, illogical at its very root. For in order logically to apply this or that concept to things, we must have a positive ground for doing so in the things themselves” (II, 183).
Hegel, towards whom S. N. generally displays particular warmth and sympathetic attention, was right in revealing the ontological significance of the logical principle; he erred only in declaring it the sole and universal principle.
Analysing the contradictory character of Kant’s doctrine of the thing in itself, the author explains its development in post-Kantian philosophy along two channels: “absolute rationalism, which culminated in Hegel, and the philosophy of the unconscious, the irrational (Schelling in his second period, Schopenhauer, Hartmann)”. Neo-Kantianism, having renounced the post-Kantian philosophical inheritance, is slowly and laboriously returning to it: so far they have reached Fichte, and in the very last few days interest in Schelling and Hegel is being revived. Until recently the absolute idealism of “classical” philosophy was regarded as a fall from grace, an aberration of thought. To accept the entire course of development of German idealism and comprehend it as a whole with a view to its creative transformation is the task of Russian philosophy in the persons of Vl. Solovyov, Prince S. N. Trubetskoy and L. M. Lopatin (and on German soil of the solitary figure of Hartmann, that greatest German thinker of the second half of the nineteenth century).
The struggle against illusionism is necessarily bound up with a more general and fundamental struggle against individualism, that truly “Protestant”, isolating, disorganising principle, in the name of the principle of sobornost, “churchliness”, catholicity. S. N. wages this struggle in philosophy, and therefore by means of critical analysis, in his philosophical articles, demonstrating the truly conciliar nature of our consciousness, “metaphysical socialism”, in his characteristic definition.
“Is truth accessible to a human being’s personal cognition, and if so, is cognition itself personal at all?” And in answering this question he says: “I think that human consciousness is not merely my personal activity, but that it is a collective function of the human race, that it is a living and concrete, universal process... In fact, within myself I hold council with everyone concerning everything... We have one common universe, one truth, one beauty. We all know through one common good sense, we believe with one universal, unshakable faith that there is a real world in space and time, entirely independent of us... Truth, goodness and beauty are not products of an external empirical agreement and are unattainable to the individual mind as such; nor are they ideas of some absolute, transcendental ‘I’... Consciousness cannot fail to be neither impersonal nor singular, for it is more than personal, being conciliar” (II, 13, 16, 95).
To recognise the conciliar nature of consciousness by no means signifies that the ideal norm, the measure of what ought to be, is realised in every individual consciousness. It is apprehended only as a formal demand, a postulate with which the wilful, isolated, sinful condition of the person does not harmonise. Humanity’s inner disorder and lack of organisation obstruct the fullness of consciousness’s conciliar unity and the absence of contradictions within it. Our author considers one of the merits of Kant’s critique to be its establishing antinomies which cannot be eliminated logically but which find their explanation in the nature of reason itself in its present condition. This very antinomic character of reason, its present natural condition, is a consequence of humanity’s incompleteness; its roots are not in consciousness but in being. It cannot be overcome by personal, subjective efforts, for “the human spirit can be wholly objective only in a perfect, absolute society. And it may be said that the striving towards such a society is a striving towards the true life of the spirit, immortality and resurrection”.
The ideal stands before human consciousness as a law which judges and convicts it, and as an imperative indicating what ought to be: a living unity of theoretical and practical reason. And the more deeply a person recognises the evil of his nature, the stronger is his need for justification, redemption and reconciliation with the Highest Truth. At the same time he recognises that he cannot attain final reconciliation and justification by himself, for he must seek it in perfect love.
“Only perfect love can justify a human being, the fullness of all-embracing love. But this love, full and perfect, containing within itself more than everything, is not a natural human instinct or a personal feat of the will, but grace, independent of him and at the same time giving to him” (109). “If you truly believe in perfect love, you cannot fail to love in deed. Perfect love is the unity of all in one, the state of all in oneself and of oneself in all. But such perfect divine Love cannot be realised in any natural human association: its kingdom is not of the world; it presupposes a perfect society, a divine-human union or the Church” (109).
Perfect Love, redemption, grace, the Church: these are the successive concepts to which ontological epistemology leads, in which it comes to rest. Being is not determined by consciousness; rather, consciousness with its antinomies is determined by being, specifically by the present sinful, sundered, unorganised condition of the universe and of humanity, let us say, translating Marx’s famous phrase into metaphysical language. Unfortunately, this supremely true and fruitful range of ideas is only sketched, as though by a dotted line, and has remained without due elaboration. One cannot fail to note the striking closeness between the philosophical ideas of Prince S. N. Trubetskoy (as also those of V. S. Solovyov) and the fundamental ideas of Slavophilism in Khomyakov and Kireyevsky, as Lopatin too observed (l. c.). The future historian of Russian philosophical thought will have to establish in all its depth and force this distinctive philosophical tradition, which, in contrast to the “Protestant principle of individualism”, he will designate as the Orthodox ecclesial principle of free sobornost... An enticing task, as yet unfulfilled...
In the religious sphere, positivism and sceptical empiricism correspond to religious indifferentism or atheism, while subjective (transcendental) idealism corresponds to “religion within the bounds of reason alone” (as Kant entitled his principal work of religious philosophy), ranging from the most indeterminate, colourless deism to the latest pietism of Ritschlian theology, with its militant adogmatism (which in essence, however, as always, represents merely one of the varieties of dogmatism, dogmatics turned inside out). Ritschlian theology, now dominant in the Protestant world, which has discarded the fundamental dogma of Christianity, faith in the God-man and His resurrection, as unnecessary and inadmissible both philosophically and historically, represents a consistent and conscious application of neo-Kantianism in the sphere of theology (several years ago, on the occasion of Kant’s anniversary, this connection, evident in itself, was attested in a series of addresses and pamphlets by various philosophers and theologians of Germany). At the same time, Ritschlian theology connects its metaphysical presuppositions with the conclusions of historical research, in which German scholarship has won such well-deserved renown. Of course, for an affirmative Christian outlook the destructive, although supremely conscientious, work of German theology represents an incomparably more serious and dangerous enemy than vulgar atheism or commonplace positivism, and, there is no denying it, the struggle against it is incomparably more difficult: here one must, while acknowledging all the truth and all the rights of historical scholarship and its criticism, defend Christianity simultaneously by the means of both historical scholarship and philosophy. Few would be capable of entering this struggle fully armed. Prince S. N. Trubetskoy belonged to those few. He entered the struggle for the fullness of Christian truth, for faith in the incarnate Word, with his work on the Logos, which, while being a scholarly investigation into the history and philosophy of Christianity, is in essence nothing other than a scholarly, philosophical, religious defence of Christianity’s most fundamental dogma against Ritschlianism: in other words, a modern apology for Christianity. Whereas the ancient apologists had to defend Christianity against the attacks of pagan philosophy and pagan polytheism, sometimes drawing upon that same pagan philosophy and mythology, the modern apologist must serve the same cause in relation to the spiritual condition of the present and defend Christian truth against its deniers among the representatives of science and philosophical criticism, drawing upon the findings of science and of that very criticism. The form changes, but the substance of the matter remains the same.
Apologist for Christianity: this expression, which we have applied to Prince S. N. Trubetskoy, defines, in our conviction, the most inward and fundamental motive of his scholarly and philosophical work. To disclose religious truth and defend it against false interpretations and denial is its ultimate aim. Nor could it have been otherwise, unless one were to question the sincerity and depth of the author’s religious faith. Heart and will, given over to religion, do not permit the soul to be divided into departments and demand wholeness, a unity whose absence can be explained only by weakness, by sin.
But does not such “prejudice” destroy the very value of inquiry, both scholarly and philosophical? This misunderstanding can be answered in the words of Prince S. N. Trubetskoy himself, spoken by him about V. S. Solovyov and applicable to himself:
“Solovyov’s fundamental idea, permeating his metaphysics, ethics, aesthetics and even his publicistic writing, is a religious Christian idea... Is such a philosophy original? Does philosophy not here become the ‘handmaid of theology’? No, and that is precisely the point... Philosophy (as also science. — Author) is not outwardly subordinated to religion; of itself it inwardly coincides with it” (I, 358–360).
The task and significance of apologetics are limited: religion cannot be taught as such; and in so far as it is possible to convey to another the fullness of religious experiences, the richness of religious experience, this instruction must be sought not from Christian apologists, philosophers or scholars, however great they may be in their own field, but in the writings of Christian ascetics, people of experiential rather than theoretical Christianity. Yet the apologist’s task in our time, so difficult for religion and full of every kind of theoretical temptation, is also very important. And those who strive to find a thread through the labyrinth of modern thought and knowledge, or at least to orient themselves more precisely within it, and especially that part of our youth in which a need for religion is beginning to awaken, should, alongside the other apologists for Christianity, give their attention to the philosophical and historical investigations of Prince S. N. Trubetskoy.
(From an Obituary of Prince S. N. Trubetskoy)
Unexpected death overtook him at the heavy plough in the people’s field, and it was not among family or friends that he closed his weary eyes.
He died from that invisible but mighty spiritual poison with which our life is poisoned, and above all the most loving, noble hearts.
Truly, dulce et decorum est pro patria mori, and here a patriotic life ended in a death pro patria. If there can be a beautiful death at all, death as the apotheosis of life, its bright radiance rather than its extinction, then here a beautiful death took place. It is terrible to envy death, but this death may be envied by many in whose hearts civic valour lives.
This death revealed to everyone all the strength, all the intimacy of the bond that existed between the mother and her beautiful son, between the homeland and her citizen. At the same time it became apparent, with bluntly empirical, medical clarity, that this heart, sick with the country’s pain, saddened by her sadness, beat in a single rhythm with the mother’s heart, burned with the same fire and was poisoned by the same poison. And with elemental force and historical necessity the funeral rite turned into a solemn, nationwide festival of freedom; a gigantic tongue of liberating flame darted towards heaven from the funeral pyre, and the singing of the funeral choirs passed irresistibly into a hymn to life in the making... Is it not an enviable lot to die in such profound unity with one’s homeland and one’s people, and moreover when that people is living through the greatest hour of its history, when the historical wave has risen to its highest point and all who possess a living soul, old and young, rich and poor, are aflame with one passion, one yearning, one longing for freedom. And it was at just such a moment that the name of Prince S. N. Trubetskoy was destined to become a watchword of freedom, just as a few months earlier he had come forward as the people’s herald in the Peterhof Palace. Death respectfully lowered its mourning torch, and above him the banner of the whole people rose triumphantly.
Such moments and such a death are not effaced from the memory of posterity. Much of this epoch will soon be forgotten (and is already being forgotten), but this national funeral, this mourning of the people, will remain in history as a symbol, as an artistic image, as a monument to the epoch.
It was no accident, but deeply significant, that such a historical role fell to one of the few, one should say outright, of the mere handful of friends and followers of Vladimir Solovyov. The spirit of the great Russian thinker presides over this funeral; the shade of the disciple meets the shade of the teacher. And involuntarily the modest and obscure funeral at which Vl. Solovyov’s mortal remains were lowered into the grave comes to mind, and it seems that a memorial service is now being held for disciple and teacher together: Prince S. N. Trubetskoy and Vladimir Solovyov.
Let others who encountered Prince S. N. Trubetskoy in the various outward spheres of his activity, in politics, in university affairs and so forth, dissect the living individuality and see in him, on the one hand, a politician, on the other a professor of philosophy, and on a third, perhaps, something else. I, however, can judge Prince S. N. Trubetskoy’s life’s work only as a whole, and although I did not know the deceased personally at all, I believe I can nevertheless affirm with sufficient grounds that the general meaning of this work, complex and manifold as it was, was whole and undivided; and for all the enormous individual differences, this work was the same as Vladimir Solovyov’s: service to the Christian idea, its embodiment in all spheres of life, in scholarly and philosophical creation, in political life, in university autonomy. Solovyov taught a universal understanding of universal Christianity, and in his life gave, as it were, an artistic embodiment of that understanding. As a philosopher he created, in general outline of course, a system of modern Christian philosophy. In it he showed how the age-long development of scientific and philosophical thought leads with an inner necessity to the recognition of the speculative truths of Christianity. He further pointed to the forgotten or undisclosed social side of Christianity, elucidating Christianity’s vocation in this sphere as a force organising and gathering humanity and ordering it on the principles of equality and freedom. Finally, in his aesthetics, as indeed also in his metaphysics, he opened a path for the apocalyptic hopes of Christianity, which were only just beginning to find room within religious consciousness.
Such were the precepts received by the richly gifted disciple from the departed teacher. Among the diverse gifts with which the disciple was endowed, first place must be given to a major and original philosophical talent, one of the foremost in his day not only in Russia but also in Europe. Prince S. N. Trubetskoy did not squander his philosophical gift on the idle speculations, of use to no one, of abstract and impotent study-bound thought, but applied it to the resolution of the most fundamental problems of philosophy connected with the world of Christian ideas.
Prince S. N. Trubetskoy’s philosophical swan song proved to be his profound study “On the Immortality of the Soul”. Of course it was no accident — nothing is accidental! — that his thought dwelt on this eternal riddle; it was already time for him to solve it...
As is known, in recent times the hurricane of liberation had completely drawn Prince S. N. Trubetskoy, who had always possessed a brilliant pen and the temperament of a true publicist, away from philosophy into politics. I confess that I watched with jealous ill will as politics took Prince S. N. Trubetskoy further and further away from philosophy, and was almost ready to thank the censorship when, thanks to it, the Moscow Week which he edited failed to appear and the prince was released from literary self-sacrifice. Here, I thought, he was an ordinary mason, a labourer; there he was a philosophical architect, entrusted in addition with the honourable mission of continuing Solovyov’s philosophical work, and with no equal to replace him in it... In the role of a political figure, through inexperience always exposed to the danger of taking a false step, committing some lapsus which is not forgiven in politics, Prince S. N. Trubetskoy seemed to me something like Plato sold into slavery, Chopin giving music lessons, Antokolsky building a railway station. Many can be found for politics; it does not require philosophical gifts, which here are rather a hindrance. And to the end I did not lose hope that we would live to see both the second volume of the Logos and much else.
But could Prince S. N. Trubetskoy, while remaining himself, have failed to throw himself into the very turmoil, into the mêlée of political struggle, without looking back, without sparing himself, without caring what people would say, without shrinking from the most hazardous stakes...
At the height of practical work, into the heated atmosphere, full of the din and clamour of the social movement, forgotten death quietly entered and, resting its finger upon one of Russia’s finest sons, said: mine! Mine, everything here is mine: this liberation movement, this historical distance which seemed to have opened out into infinity, this historical creation, all of it is for the benefit of the grave-worm. And before the great and quiet mystery of death, colours grow dim, values lose their worth, enmity falls silent; over everything death the leveller breathes a heavy stupor...
A strange bewilderment takes possession of the modern person when he hears the summons from beyond the grave, seemingly always unexpected. In confused speeches, full of conventional rhetoric or false images, modern people try to assure themselves and others that all is well and that they may go on living as before, that there is immortality too... in hearts, and eternity too... in remembrance. And there is so much oppressive falsity and sorrowful helplessness in these words with which people strive to save their values, to wrest them from death, while those values wilt at its mere approach.
In vain they strive to dissolve the individual loss in the life of the whole. For the dearest thing in the human person, what makes a human being human, is his individuality with its absolute unrepeatability. And it is precisely this individuality that death mows down mercilessly and for ever; no considerations concerning the life of the race help here: they sound like childish babble. There is only one hope for the preservation of individuality, for its absolute affirmation. It is the Christian hope of the universal resurrection, preceded by the resurrection of One: “If Christ has not risen, our faith is vain”. The sting of death is blunted only by the feat of faith.
The deceased did not fear death, for it had been overcome for him by the power of Christian conviction. In his aforementioned study “On the Immortality of the Soul” he gave an entirely mature and tranquil confession of this faith. We read there: “The more deeply we know the higher spiritual possibilities of the human being, the more intimately and deeply we love and know the human person, the more we become imbued with a consciousness of that person’s unconditional, divine value, of that intelligible beauty which, as though in a vision, is disclosed to the lover’s gaze and sets its seal upon the human person. Faith in immortality depends upon the depth and intensity of this consciousness. Whoever has seen the ‘image of God’ in the human person does not believe in that person’s annihilation, does not believe in death, and is led by a human being’s very physical death to recognise the immortality of that person’s spiritual personality. When a person who has opened himself to us, whom we have understood, loved and honoured, dies, we experience his death as an unbearable contradiction and wrong, and the question is set before us: which are we to believe more, the material fact of decay, visible annihilation, disappearance, or the testimony of our moral consciousness, for which the person remains incorruptible in his spirituality, perceived, experienced and lived through by us, in his potential or being-realised divinity, which we have come to know?” Answering this question, Prince S. N. Trubetskoy expresses his Christian faith in shyly restrained terms: “We see the final, absolute, internally consistent expression of faith in immortality in Christianity, the religion of the God-man, which recognises the not merely potential but realised, actual unity of the divine and human in the person of Jesus Christ as a living revelation, of which everyone who enters into the communion of faith becomes convinced through personal moral experience, personal consciousness. Here, for the true believer, Christ cannot be a phantom, nor can He express an abstract idea of life, that impersonal life of which certain moralists speak and in which, in essence, no one and nothing lives, while everything personal dies. He is a living and immortal person. The ‘Author’ of that life in which everything is alive, in which death and the decay of full life are abolished, which is resurrection. And whoever ‘knows’ Christ, knows Him not abstractly but intimately, spiritually, as a person, believes in Him, believes not as in a phantom and not as in an idea or dogma, but believes as in a person, and in this faith possesses the norm and ground of faith in a real and personal immortal life”.
Such is the language of living and steadfast faith, and such faith overcomes the fear of death and truly blunts its sting. Much of what so oppresses us here on earth by its tormenting mystery is now clear to the departed; clear too is the riddle of death, which each of us solves in his own way in his inward experience. And as we lower this new victim into the opened maw of the grave, before the great and terrible mystery of death, without conventional rhetoric but in all seriousness, inspired by the fiery hopes and profound illuminations of Christian faith, rather than doing violence to the word “eternity”, let us now say to the departed: Memory eternal!
