Let us begin with the first thesis, concerning humanity’s religious significance. In Feuerbach’s language it is formulated not in the sense that man is divine only in his potential capacities and ultimate destiny, but in the completely opposite sense: there is no God, and therefore man is god to man. It is formulated, that is, as a conclusion from atheism, as its synonym or as the concave side of a relief.
But anthropotheism as a conclusion from atheism contains an internal contradiction, since it asserts in particulars what it denies in general and as a whole: namely, in abolishing God it seeks to preserve the divine, the sacred. The internal and necessary dialectic of atheism therefore leads from anthropotheism to religious nihilism, to the denial of everything sacred, of every value, or, what is the same thing, to the elevation of fact, simply because it is fact, to the rank of supreme value, to the attribution of religious significance to fact as such. Atheism passed through this dialectic during Feuerbach’s lifetime in the teaching of Stirner, preacher of nihilism, amoralism and “egoism,” the “desecrator” (Entheiliger). We have already become acquainted with this significant episode in intellectual history and know that the victor in the clash between these two thinkers must be reckoned not Feuerbach but Stirner. For the consistent and sincere atheist, who does not retain old religious beliefs for practical use, there is no deliverance from deadening nihilism, from the lethal emptiness of complete solitude, and not solitude in a desert or imprisonment, but solitude among people, separation from them.
Indeed, if the supreme, absolute value, the source of all derivative values, has been rejected and declared nonexistent, what logical or even moral possibility is there of taking one’s stand on a relative, derivative value, which like the moon reflects light from the sun and goes dark along with it? For humanity, considered in the natural rather than the religious order, is still only a fact of the external world, a fact of biology, history, sociology, and so forth, in this capacity not fundamentally different from other facts or objects of the external world, such as a stone, a mountain, or this table. There is, of course, an immense quantitative difference between these facts, but no difference of principle, no difference in value or rank. To deify a fact, that is, to ascribe the significance of absolute value, the predicate of divinity, to a derivative and relative fact, is to worship an idol: in ordinary language, idolatry. And if our ancestors and present-day savages worship as deities objects of the physical world, a stone, an animal, the heavenly bodies, then Feuerbach similarly proposes worshipping humanity, the totality of individuals of homo sapiens. And if a modern man entering an idol temple finds nothing there but ugly dolls and figures, then in Feuerbach’s temple too a genuine atheist will find only idols, though of an abstract kind, and will laugh at them. Once you have cut off your head, you do not mourn your hair, Stirner might tell the pious atheist Feuerbach: having rejected the absolute, you must also abandon piety, rather than try to preserve all its attributes by ascribing them to a being known not to be absolute. The contradiction is inescapable; there is no need even to insist on this particularly. Stirner is right: atheism and nihilism, whatever form they may assume, are synonyms. Either there is a Higher One above me, before Whom I fall prostrate, or I know nothing higher than myself and above myself, and ego (not homo) deus sum [I, not man, am god].
Idolatry is understandable and natural in the eras of humanity’s unenlightened and naive consciousness, all the more so since at that time idolatry was not atheism at all and idols had the significance of genuinely sacred images. But difficult indeed is the position of a nineteenth-century thinker who has come from Hegel, and thus lost all naivety and immediacy, yet is compelled by an inner spiritual necessity to fashion for himself what he knows to be an idol, preach its divinity and pray to it; and this idol is no inaccessible heavenly body or unknown being, but we ourselves, we and our friends, wives and children, their acquaintances, the acquaintances of their acquaintances, our ancestors and our descendants: humanity, that is. Such a man must live through a continual tragedy, be tormented by a searing contradiction, languish in inner unrest; and here is one reason why Feuerbach could never settle upon a final formulation of his teaching. All his life he reworked it, often merely repeating old thoughts in different words, as though striving to drown his inner doubts in the sound of new words. In this unrest is the whole of Feuerbach, his best and noblest essence, and it is astonishing when people overlook this struggle and unrest behind the mask of dogmatic, militant atheism.
Man is sacred, and humanity is holy; it has an absolute religious destiny. Feuerbach felt this deeply. It must be reckoned a particular merit, not of his logic but of his human instinct, that he spoke precisely of a religion of humanity, that despite all his atheism he did not deny religion, but preached it. In this he stands ten heads above those who seek to abolish not only one or another form of religion, but religious deification in general, and yet turn away with an arrogant grimace from the genuine desecrator Stirner. Wherever there are absolute values, an object of veneration, something sacred, whatever it may consist in, whether the abstract idea of humanity or the letter of the Erfurt Programme, there is religion; and it does little credit to Engels’s and Marx’s perspicacity that, while retaining Feuerbach’s philosophy, in their atheistic and materialistic fanaticism they diligently eliminate his religion. And, of course, the sole conceivable form of atheistic religion remains the religion of humanity, the deification of man as Feuerbach preached it.
Either God or man: such is Feuerbach’s alternative. Yet in reality there is not only no opposition here, no either–or, but these two concepts are inseparably connected, actually uniting in the concept of God-manhood. Faith in God is also faith in man, and without this faith man becomes a strange, bipedal creature full of incomprehensible contradictions. But it is impossible to separate these faiths from one another, and every attempt to provide a religion of humanity without God is one more argument a contrario [from the contrary] in favor of this truth; just such an attempt is found in Feuerbach.
Man and humanity are the highest revelation of the Godhead, for the sake of which this world was created, which mediates between Creator and creation, the soul of the world. Only man has the capacity freely and consciously to assimilate the divine content; only in him does the absolute find its other, its image and likeness. By virtue of this humanity possesses the potential for infinite development, the capacity for true progress leading to an actual outgrowing of itself, rather than mere empty and pompous pretensions to over-humanity. Humanity’s growth from the dark element of creaturely existence to luminous communion with God and knowledge of God, from beast-manhood to God-manhood, fills the historical process. Equally necessary to this process are the free human element, actively assimilating the divine content being revealed, and this revelation of the Godhead, in its many parts and diverse forms. The Godhead, unchanging and absolute, has in humanity its image, its other, assimilating this absolute content in the historical process; in this sense humanity is the absolute in becoming. It is obvious that the possibility of the revelation of the absolute, the possibility of the divine-human process, presupposes certain capacities in man, a certain spiritual affinity, the “image and likeness” of the absolute. If we eliminate this presupposition and adopt the standpoint of deism, which reduces the Godhead, in Feuerbach’s excellent expression, to the role of a Titularursache [cause in name only], we deny all possibility of knowledge of God and divine revelation. Of such a God one cannot even say: He is, for the Godhead’s being means revealing itself, giving life. A God who does not give life is a contradictio in adjecto [a contradiction in terms]. Thus deism, the acknowledgment of God an und für sich [in and for Himself], outside all relation to man, is merely a polite form of atheism. As human beings we are capable only of human knowledge; in human language, to be means to manifest one’s existence, and the proposition that God exists in general but does not exist for man is an absurd contradiction. Through an inevitable dialectic, therefore, deism passes into atheism both theoretically and historically (in the Enlightenment).
The usual objection is to point to the allegedly unworthy and crude anthropomorphism of such conceptions of the Godhead. But the reproaches of anthropomorphism rest on a pure misunderstanding (unless, of course, they concern genuinely crude conceptions of God in which our shortcomings, weaknesses, earthly properties, and so forth are ascribed to the Godhead). What is called anthropomorphism here is in fact the only knowledge of God possible and accessible to man: human knowledge. In affirming His existence we thereby affirm at least some knowability of Him for ourselves, and consequently ascribe to ourselves an organ of this knowledge, the capacity for such knowledge. But knowledge is a profoundly intimate act, founded solely on inner affinity. We therefore acknowledge the divinity of our own nature too, that is, the image and likeness of God within us. It was pointed out long ago by a great poet, here echoing a no less great philosopher, that we would not know the sun if our eye did not contain something sunlike.
Were the eye not sunlike,
It could never behold the sun;
Did the power of God not live within us,
How could the divine delight us?
War’ nicht das Auge sonnenhaft
Die Sonne könnt’ es nie erblicken,
Lebt’ nicht in uns die Gotteskraft
Wie könnt’ uns Göttliches entzücken?
Thus accusations of anthropomorphism are perfectly justified insofar as they register the truth that God’s being is necessarily also God’s revelation, and therefore Absolute Being presupposes Absolute Becoming as well. If there is God, then man too is divine; his spiritual powers too have a divine origin and a divine destiny. Thus what is usually called religious anthropomorphism, that is, the acknowledgment of divine dignity and image in man too, does not in the least serve as an argument for atheism, as which it is used by Feuerbach, among others. Feuerbach endeavors to prove that man creates god in his own image and likeness, as the objectivated, objectified desires of his heart, as a dream. He reverses the assertion that man has God’s image and likeness to mean that God has man’s image and likeness. But this does not in the least decide the question whether man created God as a product of his imagination, or man was created by God and continually knows and feels his likeness to God. The metaphysical-religious question is not only left unresolved by this observation of Feuerbach’s, which he takes for the strongest argument for atheism, even considers the unveiling of religion’s secret and the turning point of history; in essence it is not even posed. Feuerbach in The Essence of Christianity and Vladimir Solovyov in Lectures on God-manhood (and before him Schelling) come very close to one another insofar as they are establishing man’s likeness to God, but then diverge from this common point in diametrically opposite directions. In general these works have a strange similarity and affinity amid the greatest contrast, since both, despite the entire abyss separating them, are essentially characterized by their answer to one fundamental and eternal question: what do you think of the Son of Man? And their answer to it contains the answer to another question: what do you think of man and of yourselves? It was not for nothing that Feuerbach initially planned to place a summons to self-knowledge in his work’s title: Γνῶθι σαυτόν [Know thyself].
Thus we do not at all regard Feuerbach’s anthropology as the most triumphant and irresistible weapon in atheism’s arsenal, as he regarded it; nor does it in any way warrant the religious-metaphysical conclusions in favor of atheism that he himself drew from it. The data of religious psychology noted by Feuerbach also fit into the opposite worldview; this, indeed, has already been pointed out more than once. Having rejected God, Absolute Being, Feuerbach had to acknowledge as god the absolute in becoming, humanity undergoing deification. Becoming was equated with completed being, the capacity to be deified with the state of having been deified. The absolute in process, consisting of a mixture of the absolute and the conditioned, the eternal and the transient, was declared the sole and final absolute. From this come all the subsequent difficulties, the entire tragedy of Feuerbach’s position. Henceforth he is condemned to gather the rays penetrating from above into the dark element and, with the help of those rays, illuminate what remains unilluminated.
The fundamental fact of man’s spiritual nature is its contradictoriness. Man is a living contradiction, and as such a living enigma. Heaven and hell dwell in the human soul: this has been said a thousand times. Man reaches upward and downward simultaneously, torn by the struggle of different and opposing principles, which drives human history. These irreconcilable contradictions in man prevent us from accepting him as the absolute, as Feuerbach does. To do so one must adopt a standpoint of complete moral anarchy, a philistine reconciliation with everything and everyone; but in such a frame of mind no need to find absolutes is felt at all. In this case humanity is deified not for what it is, but simply because it exists. True, profound democratic conviction is replaced by its opposite, demagogy, which excludes any higher criteria above the crowd and its judgment; and this deceptive appearance gives the view a special popularity. “The crowd is a deity, the crowd a titan!” Thus Nadson exclaims in one of his most cerebral and false poems. This aspect of Feuerbach’s views was especially readily adopted by the contemporary world, and idolatry of the crowd, demagogy, the opposite of a true, conscious democratic conviction, is the most popular form of contemporary atheism; only Nietzsche has lately assailed this idol.
In democracy, as in all human affairs, two aspects, two paths, two directions are possible: upward and downward. Upward leads the consciousness of solidarity, of the higher unity of universal humanity and of the common divine-human task, in which, although “star differs from star in glory,” there are both privates and officers, laborers and heroes, yet all are needed and equally irreplaceable for the universal, all-human and divine-human task of creating the kingdom of God, of serving the highest ideal together. Opposed to this is the tendency toward leveling, reducing everyone to a single rank, recognizing as legitimate only what is equally accessible to and shared by all, the unconscious striving to bring everything to the lowest rather than the highest level. This attitude to the masses, an uncritical veneration of the majority that does not even admit criticism, not only in matters in which the majority is wholly competent, that is, its material needs and interests, but also in matters of the spirit, is now very widespread and is ordinarily taken for democratic conviction. The absence of higher standards, a consequence of atheism, has led to the replacement of the standard of quality by the standard of quantity; Feuerbach too was guilty of this philosophical fall. This tendency is an ulcer of contemporary culture and a direct result not of its democracy, with which the deification of the crowd is by no means bound up, but of its atheism. The contemporary world continually puts Feuerbach’s formula, humanity is god and the absolute, into practice through blind worship of the crowd, the deification of the masses; and the greatest offender is Feuerbach’s direct heir, German Social Democracy.
Having extinguished the beacon and lowered the point of the dividing sword, Feuerbach is compelled to preach, instead of the religion of humanity, a cult of mediocrity, both moral and intellectual. You will recall his monstrous, absurd teaching about how the moral perfection of the species, which belongs to it in comparison with the individual, is established: different individuals are virtuous and vicious in different ways, and if we take the algebraic sum, the pluses will cancel out the minuses and the image of perfect virtue will result: the species, which in this capacity also constitutes the individual’s “objectified conscience.” We consider this conception an entirely manifest absurdity, equally outrageous to reason and conscience. One need not criticize it, but only explain it. Most instructive here is that Feuerbach descended to this shameful doctrine not through some particular mistake or accidental clouding of his mind, but involuntarily, perhaps against his will, in struggle with himself: otherwise he would have had nowhere to turn. With the honest consistency and intellectual courage that distinguish him, he forces his way ahead toward absurdity, gives away the secrets, the “mystery,” of his atheism, which it might have been more prudent not to advance but to leave in the shadows. Let someone, in agonizing, fateful moments of spiritual decline, despondency and despair, when one’s hands fall helplessly and faith in man, in human achievement, in the beauty of the human soul grows dim; let Chekhov, poisoned by “gray people,” be reminded of this remarkable consideration: “gray people,” taken separately, are of course not first-rate, but they are “gray” in different ways, and if all their shades are added together, crimson and bright violet will result, a hero will result. Will this conviction provide a source of vigor and faith, will it clear the clouded gaze? Or would the recollection or account of a single genuinely good act by one particular person be more likely to refresh the despondent, perhaps a child’s pure smile, to say nothing of the thought of that Righteous One, the “One Sinless,” Who also bore human flesh and sorrowed with human sorrows? Be that as it may, one can guarantee that such Feuerbachism will at such a moment be simply repulsive.
Feuerbach felt the same lack of a way out when he posed the question of the nature of truth. It is indisputable that the one truth is revealed only to humanity as a whole in its historical development; here too different roles are allotted to different individuals: some are given to be pioneers, to go far ahead and remain incomprehensible to their contemporaries, while others are destined to find an immediate response and understanding; some are given to be creators, others to be more or less passive assimilators and custodians of what they have not themselves acquired. In any case it is true that truth is known jointly by the human species; here a natural and ineradicable communism exists.
But this obvious and indisputable truth was not enough for Feuerbach. He needed to acknowledge that truth is not only known jointly but also created jointly. To acknowledge truth as something that exists prior to all human knowledge, is already to acknowledge God, for truth is one of the necessary determinations of the deity; it is to acknowledge that knowing is in its essence revelation, although conditioned by humanity’s active, self-directed activity. Faithful to his atheism, Feuerbach could of course acknowledge none of this and once again found himself compelled to maintain a manifest absurdity (even if today it is shared by minds as acute, but as excessively fond of paradox, as Simmel’s), that “truth is the consciousness of the species.” Yet applying the criterion of numerical majority, the cult of mediocrity, involves obvious difficulties in this case, still greater than in the previous one; so Feuerbach immediately makes a decisive retreat from his principle, declaring that an individual human being may represent the entire species and in that capacity also disagree with the species. Clearly this qualification completely destroys the rule itself, and Feuerbach’s attempt to establish it was simply in vain.
Here, then, is what became of the great and important truth concerning humanity’s religious dignity and vocation after Feuerbach turned it into an abstract principle and, unwilling to acknowledge the Higher Content, deified the external form in which It reveals Itself: not the source of light and life, but the dark and dead elements. Feuerbach presented a typical image of the philosophical idolater.
The second truth of the greatest importance laid at the foundation of Feuerbach’s humanism, or anthropotheism, is the idea that humanity is one, and that the species, the whole, exists prior to the individual and is a real being. This idea is the leitmotif of Feuerbach’s entire philosophy, as of that of his like-minded contemporary Auguste Comte. He establishes the connection of the individual with the species, of man with humanity, not merely in the sense of causal dependence, which also binds us to external nature, but by giving this fact fundamental, religious significance. The species is the deity by which every member of it, every individual, is sanctified. Here too Feuerbach comes remarkably close to the essence of Christianity and its greatest truths. Humanity recognizes its solidarity and feels itself to be one: here is the marvelous and enigmatic fact lying at the very bottom of human consciousness. We are speaking, let us repeat, not of external causal dependence, but of far more. Of course the causal connection of one generation with another lies on the surface and cannot fail to strike the eye. One generation stands in precisely the same objective dependence on another as a type of agriculture on climate and soil, skin color on the sun, and so forth. But the all-human solidarity of which we speak cannot possibly be squeezed out of this fact of causal dependence, for it contains something much more than a causal connection. In it are affirmed the moral solidarity and unity of the human species, a common conscience, common dignity, common tasks and ideals. We live and act not as individuals A, B, C, nor as a mechanical aggregate or sum A + B + C, but as members or elements of a whole ABC, which exists prior to and independently of A, B, and C, and gives them a particular quality. We say: homo sum et nihil humani a me alienum esse puto [I am human, and I consider nothing human alien to me], and this declaration is equally comprehensible in all languages and all countries. We possess the capacity to feel pride and shame for man, that is, to feel on humanity’s behalf. We feel satisfaction for man when we observe the creative flight of human genius and the beauty of human achievement; and we feel shame and pain, again for man, when we dwell in thought on humanity’s falls. “Der Menschheit ganzer Jammer fasst mich an” [Humanity’s whole misery grips me], says Faust as he enters the prison where Margarete languishes, again perceiving the suffering of the girl he abandoned as the sorrow of all humanity. And the loftier the spirit and the subtler the consciousness, the more acutely this human solidarity is felt, the deeper the suffering and sorrow for people, the more distinctly speaks the voice of a conscience that is not merely individual but all-human. Humanity’s vices and sin belong to it as a whole; one person cannot free himself from sin on his own account while all humanity remains mired in evil and injustice, nor can one individual fall without drawing his fellows after him into the abyss. Thus the teaching concerning the original sin of all humanity, by which all humanity could sin in one man, becomes increasingly intelligible.
Мы говорим: homo sum et nihil humani a me alienum esse puto, и это заявление одинаково понятно на всех языках и во всех странах. «Der Menschheit ganzer Jammer fasst mich an»,
This consciousness, this primary and elementary fact of conscience, admits of no rational, or more precisely rationalistic, explanation. It is rationalistically intelligible, if indeed it is intelligible even then, why I feel guilty for my own acts and their immediate results. But when I feel guilty in cases where this connection does not exist to the visible eye (for example, as in Chekhov’s story “On Official Business,” for the death of an unknown suicide), or where guilt immeasurably exceeds individual responsibility in general, for some reason I feel guilty both for the Russo-Japanese War and for the disaster at Tsushima, then one is compelled to acknowledge that besides the individual’s personal responsibility for his individual acts, there is also a conscience of the species, a sensorium of the species, an all-human consciousness that is real rather than invented and lives in every individual. Its voice may be more or less distinct, sometimes, even often, entirely stifled, but it exists, this enigmatic, mysterious voice, and it says: all are guilty for all and in everything; humanity is one and solidary, and within this single living whole there is no possibility of drawing a boundary where one person’s guilt or another’s ends. In modern Russian literature this greatest and most profound truth of Christianity has been understood above all by Dostoevsky, who became its true preacher (it is also strongly emphasized in the contemporary theosophical movement and the doctrine of karma). It is easy even to give this feeling some rationalistic corroboration by pointing to the causal connection of everything that exists and to the significance of every smallest individual act for the entire universe. But this theoretical proposition by itself cannot engender such a living, real feeling of all-human solidarity, of living pride and living shame and repentance for humanity. This living feeling cannot be rooted solely in an abstraction, in an abstract thought; it is evidently bound up with our life, with our genuine being, though not with the aspect of it laid bare on the surface of consciousness, where separation, the feeling of individuality, of being apart from everything, reigns. It is bound up with the aspect turned toward the subterranean, mystical roots of being, where the individual is really united with the one humanity, with the world soul; and the enigmatic, mystical experience of all-human solidarity is a voice that reaches the surface from the depths.
The real mystical unity of humanity necessarily presupposes a living, real, individual, rather than abstract center of this unity, which reunites it and transforms humanity into a living spiritual organism. This center is Christ, Who has inseparably bound Himself to humanity, the God-man Who reunites humanity with the Godhead. As such a living and real center of humanity, He could take upon Himself its guilt and sins, and His purifying sacrifice, his feat, had and could have real significance for all humanity, inseparably bound to Him. And so long as the sinful life of humanity, not yet transfigured although already redeemed, continues, we, even without believing in Christ but nevertheless standing in a real connection with Him, feel the pain caused to Him in His humanity, and this feeling is the all-human conscience. Even without believing in Christ, but feeling within ourselves real all-human unity, we still endeavor to preserve this feeling in ourselves, recognizing it within us as something higher, something sacred. This also explains the sorrowful paradox that Feuerbach, an opponent of Christianity, preaches its fundamental truth: humanity’s unity and solidarity, but a unity without a unifying center, a holiness without a sanctifying foundation.
Yet here too, as in other cases, he is condemned to struggle against himself, to pursue a receding phantom. He wants to base humanity’s unity, not abstract but real, essential unity, exclusively on empirical reality; but this ground continually slips away beneath his feet, for in its empirical existence humanity is not one. Unity exists here for it only as a task, or more precisely as a norm or ideal, never passing wholly into reality or being realized in it. There is no one humanity, and therefore no history of humanity, civilization of humanity, progress of humanity, and so forth: these are all abstractions and conventions. In reality there are only separate epochs, separate generations, separate estates and classes, and finally persons, while humanity as a whole slips like a phantom from our hands as soon as we try to grasp it. Of the entire spherical surface to which the human species may here be likened, only a few points are illuminated for us and lie within our field of vision, while the whole vast sphere above and below is shrouded in darkness. Past generations, with their agonizing and thankless labor, which, standing on their shoulders, we nevertheless generally regard with arrogant and condescending contempt, have left us only cemeteries full of corpses, and neither grateful memory nor a living sense of heartfelt connection can bind us to them. The idea of honoring the dead, directly bound up with the idea of the soul’s immortality and the coming resurrection, finds no place in positivistic consciousness. They existed, and now they do not; nothing remains of their sufferings, their heartaches, their struggles and despairs. These people manured the future harmony with themselves, did their work for us, and let their bones rot in peace. I am neither slandering nor caricaturing: for positivism there truly is and can be no other attitude toward past humanity. One cannot love an abstraction and a phantom of what once was; and the growing scholarly interest in history, which, moreover, concerns institutions more than people, largely has the character of curiosity and a fondness for various rarities, a purely intellectual inquisitiveness rather than heartfelt concern. Indeed, a contemporary economist can now demonstrate in a single work, in one breath, so to speak, that modern capitalist civilization rests on the extermination of entire tribes and the plundering of entire cultures, that it is drowning in blood, and in that same breath begin boastfully and complacently to enumerate all its pleasures and charms with the heedlessness of... cynicism. No, there is no need to dissemble: present-day humanity is regarded as an end, and all previous generations are merely means to it.
But future generations too are a nebula in which the eye distinguishes nothing definite. We may suppose that they will regard past humanity with the same indifferent contempt as we do, and will regard us as historical manure just as we regard our ancestors. It will safely “leap” (if the modern prophets are to be believed) from the kingdom of necessity into the kingdom of freedom and, looking back, will recall it with the same contemptuous horror with which we recall the age of the Inquisition. And then too there will be only a single illuminated point, shifted to another place but still surrounded by darkness above and darkness below.
The greatest falsehood of positivism in general and Feuerbach’s in particular therefore consists in its assertion that man is mortal, finite and limited, whereas humanity is immortal and capable of unlimited improvement. Under a positivistic understanding of human life, that is, one that limits human existence to the given empirical conditions alone, humanity does not exist: it is merely an abstraction, merely an algebraic formula. Stirner, likewise an empiricist and positivist but a more consistent one, was a thousand times right against Feuerbach when he told him that he splits man into an actual and an abstract being and that the species is an abstraction. In reply Feuerbach pointed out that even the “unique one” needs a wife and children, contemporaries in general. Granted; but contemporaries do not constitute humanity, the species as a whole. They are only an illuminated point on the sphere, while the whole does not and cannot exist. Humanity does not exist; its phantom falls helplessly before the great equalizer, death, and breaks up into separate generations, succeeding one another like waves and, like waves, mutually estranged. Thus the real content of Feuerbach’s formula homo homini deus can only be this: god for me is my contemporaries, my friends, enemies, acquaintances and strangers. Congratulations on such a deity and such a religion.
Nor will it help to invoke the fact that all humanity stands in an objective historical connection that unites it into a single whole. Granted. Let it be demonstrated, for example, that through the Bible I stand in an immediate connection with the ideas of ancient Babylon. But first, I stand in a similar causal connection with the entire physical world around me; my well-being is inseparably bound up, for example, with the proper operation of the law of gravitation. Physically, direct continuity binds me to the entire organic world, to pterodactyls, gorillas and frogs, perhaps still more firmly than to the Babylonians. Second, and most importantly, this appeal says nothing, since the issue is not the objective causal connection established by science, but the living feeling of awareness of this connection, the heartfelt acknowledgment needed for religion, or even simply for the feeling of solidarity, through which alone the unity of humanity is alive.
We should therefore reject as a euphemism, as a counterfeit coin, the notion of all-human progress, all-human civilization. It is more accurate to speak of the civilization of future generations, of their well-being and happiness, without substituting the part for the whole and calling these generations, of whom we know neither how many there will be nor what they will be like, humanity. Modern positivism borrowed its entire vocabulary, and in part even its circle of ideas, from Christianity, without noticing that all this, severed from the living table [sic], dies and withers, turns into an empty sound. The concept of a single humanity contains an irreconcilable antinomy: on the one hand, awareness of this unity is given to us in immediate feeling and is a natural and inevitable postulate, the norm of our actions, thoughts and feelings; on the other, this unity is mercilessly destroyed by death, which transforms inner unity into the external succession of generations, and awareness of connection and solidarity into the inherited traditions of history, into the historical process. The only way out of the contradiction, the resolution of the antinomy, is possible only if one acknowledges that history is not the final form of humanity’s life and that the results of the combined activity and labors of all humanity truly have significance for all humanity. But this view is possible only with the acceptance of the Christian faith in the “age to come” and universal resurrection, with which alone faith in progress, in the historical creativity of humanity rather than of separate successive generations, can be connected. Otherwise it turns into meaninglessness, into embodied irony: were the centuries-long sufferings of all humanity really needed to provide well-being for unknown chosen ones for the short span of their lives? Only one victor triumphs: death.
Feuerbach felt these contradictions. It was not for nothing that he criticized the idea of personal immortality so lengthily and verbosely and praised death; not for nothing was he prepared to escape them even at the cost of manifest absurdity. Having rejected the God-man, the mystical center that unites humanity, he began to seek it in the empirical world and, as we know, found it... in the state. The reader will recall that in the end the head of state appears in the role of god’s deputy. This absurdity shows that all is not well within the doctrine itself and constitutes a stern warning to Feuerbach’s followers.
Religious anthropology, the doctrine of anthropotheism, is the key with which Feuerbach attempts to unlock all the secret recesses of religion and Christianity. This critical work of his has a secondary and derivative significance; though there is much ingenuity and brilliance in it, its fundamental grounds are given in anthropology... And if this universal key proves to be covered on all sides with rust and breaks in one’s hands, we consider ourselves entitled to dispense here with examining the particulars of Feuerbach’s criticism of Christianity, since a judgment on its principles has already been pronounced, while investigation of its details can only be a specialized task.
If we put aside the individual peculiarities every writer possesses, we must say of Feuerbach together with Auguste Comte that it was given to them to become spokesmen for the spirit of the modern age in its most fundamental, essential and profound characteristic. This characteristic is exhausted by one word: humanism, considered not in the narrow sense of the primarily literary movement in which it first appeared in modern history (though medieval and modern humanism do have a direct intellectual affinity and continuity), but understood as the greatest fact of life in the modern age, beginning approximately with the great French Revolution or even earlier, in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Humanism and the modern age are synonyms. Modern humanism knows no Luther, Zwingli or Calvin of its own. Leveling and democratic humanism has no need of, and does not even admit, individual leaders who embody or create the movement. Humanism’s “heroes,” in the Carlylean sense of the word, its “führende Geister” [leading spirits], are certainly not giants such as Muhammad or the aforementioned heroes of the Reformation; but if this age too has its heroes, Feuerbach must certainly be named among them. The spirit of the modern age, its moods and feelings, is reflected in his works perhaps more vividly than in those of his more celebrated contemporaries. In this lies Feuerbach’s historical significance, far greater than the purely theoretical and philosophical value of his writings.
Perfect God-manhood, which according to Christianity is the Creator’s ultimate thought concerning His creation, the ideal task being resolved in the cosmic and historical process, presupposes the free assimilation of the divine content of life, and consequently rules out the possibility of the human element being suppressed by divine power. Although man assimilates the divine content given to him, he receives it in free creativity, in the historical process, as a result of the development of his own powers, as a real realization of God’s image in his own being. This assimilation therefore cannot in any way be merely the passive reception of alien content; it presupposes a movement from oneself toward it, an independent, human movement. For this purpose the human element must temporarily separate itself from the divine and be consciously grasped in its depths as such; man must stand on his own feet in order freely to receive and assimilate the divine content of life.
Thus perfect God-manhood is equally impossible without God and without man. In the historical unfolding of divine-human unity, which proceeds in general dialectically through contradictions, both extremes have been tried, both possibilities of a one-sided understanding of the universal idea of God-manhood: whereas in the Middle Ages the dominant worldview was one of God-manhood without man, or, more precisely, apart from man, in the modern age the prevailing idea is humanity without God or apart from God. At the basis of the medieval worldview and the practice of life founded on it lay distrust of man and his powers, of his earthly interests and affairs. Monasticism was regarded as the most perfect and adequate embodiment of the divine-human idea. I am less inclined than anyone to belittle the one-sided truth of this idea: intense idealism, acute experience of the transcendent, mighty faith. Through all these features the Middle Ages accumulated in humanity’s soul a wealth we have not yet exhausted, a reserve of lofty feelings, prayerful dispositions, an idealistic contempt for the transient goods of this world. In the Russian soul, perhaps even more than in the European, these feelings remain alive, bound up with European humanity’s common spiritual homeland, the Middle Ages (understanding this term as a cultural-historical rather than chronological epoch). To this day medieval architecture represents an unsurpassed and even unequaled peak of intensity in idealistic-religious art, just as the beauty of ancient art remains unsurpassed and unequaled for us in a completely different sphere. And beside these majestic monuments to medieval humanity’s spiritual life, the contemporary age with its railway stations and hotels seems so petty, prosaic, philistine. One must know how to revere this past.
Nevertheless, the medieval worldview now undoubtedly belongs for us to the historical past, and an irretrievable past at that. It has been lived through and outlived; its one-sidedness and untruth have been recognized with complete clarity; and if this untruth still attempts to try its rotten power on the contemporary world, then what naked, deadening violence, without the former enchantment of holiness, without the old radiance around the darkened countenance.
The medieval understanding of the idea of God-manhood was historically defeated by a worldview that is its complete opposite and negation: humanism, the religion of humanity either without God or against God. In this either–or lie two possibilities or two different shades, as it were two registers in which what seems the same music can sound. But we shall not touch on this difference just now; let us dwell for the moment on the content of the melody itself.
Humanism brought the earthly, human side of the historical process to the fore with extraordinary force, rising to defend humanity against the inhumanity of the Middle Ages. It put forward as the first commandment what will be required of us all, regardless of faith: to feed the hungry and give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, visit the imprisoned; for what other content does the social movement it created have than the fulfillment of this commandment of Christ? Humanism extinguished the fires of the Inquisition, broke the chains of slavery, with which an extra-human, exclusively otherworldly Christianity easily reconciled itself; it freed speech, thought and conscience from tyrannical oppression, created the free person; it now wages the last great struggle against the social slavery of capitalism, completing the work of personal emancipation. May these deeds of humanism always be blessed!
Humanism’s achievements are great in Russia too. Here in Russia the same clash occurred as in the West between extra-human God-manhood and godless humanism, between the medieval and modern worldviews. Here too humanism’s ideas inspired and inspire the liberation movement. Almost the entire revolutionary struggle was conducted under humanism’s banner. Our various social movements, beginning with Belinsky’s Westernism, populism, the People’s Will movement and Marxism alike, despite all their differences share a common religious-philosophical ground in the ideas of humanism. And Russia’s liberation has been unfolding before our eyes through the blood, illnesses, torments and labors of those whose saints stand not in the Christian temple but in the humanistic pantheon.
Thus one might apparently say that humanism, having taken the place of the medieval worldview, is a step forward in the overall historical movement of the divine-human process and, moreover, in a certain sense in Christian consciousness too. By emphasizing the independent significance of the human element, it contributes to a fuller unfolding of the great truth of God-manhood, revealing a new aspect of it.
Yet we have already seen and know that this humanism has another essence too, contains a twofold possibility. The human principle expressed one-sidedly in it, illegitimately suppressed in the medieval worldview, first appeared, though without God, essentially in God’s name. In this case its apparent godlessness is merely a protest against the medieval worldview; admittedly a protest that fails to distinguish form from content, historical abuse from the essence of the matter, but one whose starting point is not rebellion against God but the defense of human rights. Yet a far more conscious and profound atheistic humanism is also possible, fundamentally hostile to everything that exceeds man. This possibility follows from the very nature of the case: if God-manhood requires man’s free participation for its existence, then man must be at liberty to turn that freedom against such participation too, must be equally free to follow Christ and go toward Christ or to go against Him. There unquestionably exists in humanism, and increasingly distinctly, a consciously anti-Christian current in which humanism itself becomes, strictly speaking, a means of struggle against Christ. The great world tragedy, the struggle of Christ with the antichrist, inevitably had to manifest itself under this guise, more acutely and consciously than anywhere else; for once the common humanistic credo is accepted and understood as the necessary practical application of Christianity, the distinction between the ultimate, highest values on which the credo itself and its register depend naturally comes to the fore. Anti-Christian humanism wants to limit humanity’s spiritual flight in exchange for earthly well-being; like the spirit in the wilderness of old, it proposes to turn stones into bread, and does turn them by the miracles of technology, but on condition that it receive divine worship. It wants finally to extinguish the fire of Prometheus with which the Middle Ages, after all, blazed, and, by blunting the tragic discord within the individual soul, create a kingdom of spiritual bourgeoisness, of cultural philistinism. It brings with it the subtlest spiritual poison, which devalues its gifts and turns them into diabolical temptations. And the concepts of humanity, humaneness, the religion of humanity, in this usage prove, strange to say, merely the antichrist’s mask, his pseudonym...
At its emergence, when humanism was only beginning to oppose Christianity, mistakenly taking it to be the definitive and complete expression of the medieval worldview, it was still difficult to distinguish precisely what the hostility concerned. But as ideas become further differentiated and humanism achieves practical successes and gains, especially as the concept of true God-manhood, which entirely includes all the truth of humanism, all its concern for man and for what is genuinely human, begins to unfold increasingly in people’s minds, two currents must become more and more distinct: humanism with Christ and in His name, or against Christ and in its own name. “I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive” (John VI, 43). Here is the divided abyss, here are above and below, right and left: in whose name? And it will be given to future historical development definitively to disclose in religious consciousness two principles, two utterly irreconcilable opposites, still hidden beneath the common label of humanism. These opposites, which lay bare the human soul down to its genuine metaphysical essence, are of course rooted not so much in the folds of a flexible mind as in the secret depths of the heart, in its free self-determination toward good and evil. Thus the whole of humanistic civilization also has an antinomic, dualistic character: its value lies in its ultimate goal, and this goal may differ and even be opposite.
This dualism is neither accidental nor contrived, but fundamental, metaphysical, lying at the foundation both of the entire universe and of the human soul. The source of this dualism is freedom, in which lies our highest dignity, the image of God. Where there is freedom, there are choice and division, there is struggle; and we have been sent into this world not for idle vegetating but for irreconcilable and unceasing struggle, to build the kingdom of God through free struggle.
Nevertheless, the necessary foundation of this kingdom of God is in any case free humanity, and man’s liberation in history, external human emancipation, which is humanism’s principal task and principal work, is a necessary condition for it. Thus those who labored in the field of humanism, contributing to this divine-human goal, the liberation of the person, brought their stone for the construction of the new Jerusalem. And among these masons and workers L. Feuerbach too will take his place, the inspired preacher of humanism, the “pious atheist,” who despite his atheism discerned the divine element in man and expressed his insights in the multivalent and enigmatic formula: homo homini deus est.
